A Cast Of Thousands

In the beginning there was the script. Before filmmaker Kevin Smith made his 1994 breakthrough flick Clerks, he had already written Dogma -- the story of two renegade angels (played by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck) who after being exiled to Wisconsin for all eternity, try to find a way back into Heafen. Due in theaters in late November, the film is set to turn heads. Smith, in expanding the Christian canon, has thrown in a 13th apostle (played by Chris Rock) and the boss upstairs is played by none other than Alanis Morissette. Even with Smith's successful track record, most recently Chasing Amy and a star studded cast, distributors have been wary of putting their name beside Dogma. Dogma: Rumor Control, at www.newsaskew.com/dogmarc, the "official unofficial" site of Smith's View Askew projects, is run by Chris Alley and Brad Plevyak. They've been addressing Dogma rumors and keeping trainspotters up-to-date even before it began shooting in March 1998. The site also contains the complete movie script, Quicktime movie clips, and an MP3 version of Morissette's "Still" from the soundtrack. "Any sort of hype like this can only do good things for a film," says Plevyak. "Factor in the incredibly talented, popular, and diverse cast that Kevin's managed to bring together for this film, add in all of the pre-release hype to give the flick greater visibility, and you've got broad audience appeal." And a goldmine for future trivia questions.
