SMITH: DOGMA IRE MISDIRECTED (September 16, 1999)

by Another Universe)

Kevin Smith's upcoming irreverent look at religion, Dogma, is the target of some Catholic criticism but the real target started off as Disney, he says. At Toronto's recent film festival, Smith told columnist Liz Smith, "When the stuff over Dogma first came up, it wasn't because the Catholic League was mad at me, or the film. They were mad at Disney." Disney's Miramax execs recently sold distribution rights to Lion's Gate.

Disney has come under fire for what some religious groups call overly progressive social policies such as gay days at its amusement parks.

Smith defended Dogma. "I've been working on this movie for five years and I've consistently been careful about not offending the church. This is a just a comic satire, so I thought it was safe. It's not The Last Temptation of Christ… I didn't make the movie for [the Catholic League]. I made it for movie-goers who have been faithful to my films and for people who like to laugh. Of course, all this controversy will benefit us, but I still wish it had not occurred."
