Dogma (Pre-Release Los Angeles Test Screening 5/14/99)

Review By Anonymous

Ok, I got to see Dogma last night in LA.

First Jeff looked horrible, like he aged 10 years in 5. He had maybe 1 or 2 lines in the film, nothing to remember him by. As for the rest of the film minus Jay and Rock, it was the worst Askew film to date. I went in there with low expectations of the film as I usually do. I managed to leave with a strong sense of disappointment, that made me wish I didn't see the film to begin with.

Don't get me wrong, I think some of Kevin's best lines for used in Dogma, but it just didn't hold up for me.

The plot seemed to be to tough to handle in a 2-hour film. Though if it were 3 hours, I would have walked out. Every angelic character was playing a plot point, which wasted Kevin's dialogue. Affleck & Damon, boring and over praised as usual. Linda seemed out of place and at times whiney, though I have been a fan of hers since Gotcha!. This go around she was a disappointment, she seemed lost and confused with her character. Rickman was OK. Alanis just needs to stick to singing, boy was she just a let down. Salma was Salma, not saying much, but she looked good in a Bikini. Silent Bob, what happened? All those close up facial expressions were disturbing. Silent Bob what happened to him? The character just seemed off to me. Jason Lee would have been great as Damon's character. Seems to me Affleck needs Lee to bring out any quality acting. Otherwise it is just Armageddon with Wings!

Where was the character depth? These Angelic beings are supposed to be a million years old, but they all seemed to be what they were, like 28 or younger. No development, what so ever, no real history or feeling. It was like hey there is that guy from Die Hard, with black dyed hair. Why?

I thought the Fat Albert scene was great. Mewes was better then ever and rock shined throughout the film. It looks to me as though Jay is finally comfortable in front of the camera. Let's face it Jay had the best line in the film, "I didn't cum on you Pete". But I will have to put Dogma 4th on my KS list of films.

I rather watch MALLRATS twice.
