Big Helium Dog
A DIARY (PART THREE)

When we last left our heroes (Well, us) they were about to make their second appearance in "Big Helium Dog". The scene involved Vincent as the Cigarette Fairy and 2 gorgeous bikini girls. Let's see what happens next...

Saturday, approximately 3:05 PM: We've learned that we'll be walking through the scene in the background (as passersby) while The Cigarette Fairy delivers his lines as he's flanked by two bikini girls. It's a pretty simple task, but we're still careful not to mess up. We're given our line cues telling us when to enter, and, after a few takes, the scene is complete.

3:20 PM: "That is a wrap for The Cigarette Fairy!" This was Vincent's last scene in BHD. His work is finished! From the look of things, he did an outstanding job in his role, and we're looking forward to the final cut. Vincent disappears into the house, to get out of costume and wash up, most likely.

3:30 PM: We realize the time is getting late, since we'd like to also stop at the Stash quickly before our 3 hour trek home. We arrange for a ride back into town with Mike, one of the sound guys. As we leave, the rehearsal for the next scene is beginning. It involves the bikini girls and two other characters (who we haven't seen before) running down the street towards the camera. This will apparently be a slow-motion scene in the final picture.

3:35 PM: Mike is ready to take off, so before we depart we quickly interrupt Brian Lynch to thank him for putting up with us looking over everyone's shoulder for the day and say goodbye. As we leave, there appears to be a discussion as to if the bikini girls could do a brisk walk instead of a run down the street. Brian says no. :)

3:45 PM: We're on our way back to Red Bank! Mike's got all sorts of neat Askew stories to tell us. He'd seen "Clerks" a year before it was even released, and lets us in on some of the extra cut scenes that didn't even make the laserdisc extras. He also talks about shooting that famous diner scene from "Chasing Amy" with Jay & Silent Bob. Apparently, the diner remained operational when they were shooting, and a couple of drunken state troopers were making things difficult for the crew to work. What do you say to drunken state troopers, though? They left soon after, but it was a tough shoot. That scene began filiming at 4:30 PM that day, and they didn't make it out until 8:30 the next morning. Makes you appreciate it even more, doesn't it?

3:55 PM: We're back in Red Bank! Mike drops us off, and we thank him for the ride. We head back towards the car, check it for traffic tickets (Apparently you're not supposed to park on Monmouth Street all day long, we've discovered), and by some miracle the car is clean. On to the Stash!

4:05 PM: Let's just say, it's pretty weird walking into the Stash and seeing Jay Mewes behind the counter. Because, after all, he's Jay. As reported, he's much more subdued in person than he appears in the flicks, but it's a blast chatting with him. He calls Kev for us (I think Jay managed to keep an unlit smoke in his mouth the entire duration of our stay, by the way), but unfortunately he's a little tied up and can't come down to the store. No problem. Jay and I talk about his internet future for a few minutes. He laments about the lack of an extra phone line at the Stash, but then again, maybe that's a good thing, because I've heard rumors that he's hooked on Diablo. If he had regular access to the net, we may never see him again.

Chris spots the imfamous Walt Flanagan in the Stash as well, but he looks busy so we leave him alone. We felt bad enough bothering Jay, actually.

4:13 PM: We leave the Stash, and head to the car. Looks like our day has come to an end.

4:20 PM: We exit the town of Red Bank, but vow to return again to see what other trouble we can get into. We'll spare you the thrilling details of the ride home. After a much-needed pit stop at The Olive Garden in Allentown, PA, we arrive home around 9:30 PM. We crash. HARD. Can't remember the last time I slept that well. Now THAT is what I call a FULL day!

  • All things considered, it was a most outstanding day. We spent quite a bit of our time on set just hanging back and staying out of the way. It's amazing how much preparation goes into a scene, and we wanted to be sure that we weren't an annoyance. We didn't want to inadvertently screw up a scene, either! Also, we were pretty much total strangers amongst a crew where everyone else knew each other.

  • The BHD crew really made us feel welcome and we appreciate that. Special thanks to Vincent for the invite, Brian for letting us invade his set (And his movie!), Kevin for chatting, Neil for all the inside info, and Mike for the ride back into Red Bank! We look forward to seeing you all again soon. And for those of you who'll never get the chance to get to Red Bank, we hope to have another behind the scenes report for our next trip to town. Who knows what it'll be for, but it's gotta happen sometime! 'Til the next adventure...
