2006 – The Year In Askew!

December 31st @ 9:12 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • And so, here we are again, in what’s become an annual tradition here at News Askew — It’s time to take a look at the year that was 2006, including all the news, surprises, changes, and happenings in the world of View Askew Productions.

2006 started off in an exciting way — We were lucky enough to catch one of the first ever screenings of Clerks II in its final form — The film began 2006 in the can, but with a few tweaks to be made during two very private test screenings in New York and Los Angeles. “No Way It Gets An R!” proclaimed Kevin at the end of January, though eventually we would all find out together this amazing feat would actually take place.

By the start of Februrary, Kevin announced Clerks II was in the can in its final cut, and a month ahead of schedule, no less. This likely due to the fact that he worked all nighters editing the film as it was being produced. USA Today caught an early look at the film and began showering praise on it, which would become a common thread as the year went on – The critics would LOVE Clerks II. As the months rolled on, the awesome “Train Wreck” series continued to present online viewers with scenes from the film’s creative process — Which would continue up to, and beyond, the film’s release. The month also brought us the big annoucement that Vulgarthon would return to the homeland of Red Bank, New Jersey in May of 2006.

The Vulgarthon madness continued into March of 2006, where an unprecedented DAY TWO of the ‘thon was addded, giving fans who missed out on the fast-selling day one a chance to see the program again a second day (or appease those of us die-hard day one’ers who wanted to come back for more). March also was a HUGE internet milestone for View Askew Productions, as Kevin congratulated Ming Chen on his 10th anniversary with the company, along with a posting of the original e-mail that started it all off. Yes, viewaskew.com celebrated 10 years online in 2006! Also, amazingly enough, March also marked the demolition of the Mooby’s store constructed in California — Months before the film would actually be released in theaters. It’s of course common for sets to be destroyed immediately after filming, though it was sad to see such a public icon of View Askew go away so suddenly — It would have made a neat tourist trap, we’re thinking (plus we’d have loved to go get our “Cow Tipper” on out there). Finally, March marked the start of one of the most amazingly detailed and honest stories to ever hit an online blog — His saga of his life with Jason Mewes, “Me and My Shadow”. The multi-part story would become one of the most popular online blogs of all time (even gathering kudos from “Newsweek” magazine. MySpace, in fact, would be a favorite haunt of Kevin’s this year — Pages created for Clerks II invited lucky users to get their own name in the film’s credits simply by adding the page to their friend list in March.

Clerks II excitement was at at all-time high in early April when the official trailer made its online debut. This brilliantly cut together piece showcased just a sampling of what the film had to offer, but wisely kept many of the movie’s profane secrets and surprises under wraps. Commercials and clips would later sadly give a few more of the film’s twists away, but as with previous efforts, there was no possibly way to spoil some of the best stuff in the film in G-rated MPAA trailers and telelvision ads. On April 12, Kevin was honored by UCLA with the 24th Jack Benny Award For Comedy. The award celebrated Kevin’s outstanding contribution to comedy. Kevin wasn’t the only View Askew vet making news in April — It was also announced that Jason Lee would voice “Underdog” in a 2007 theatrical release, as he continued to enjoy huge ratings and critical success for his NBC show “My Name Is Earl”. And last, but certainly not least, we celebrated our own anniversary at the end of April, 9 years of bringing you the news. We’ll celebrate our 10th in 2007. Wow.

The big news of May was the announcement that Clerks II would be making a trip to the Cannes film festival — This prestigious honor was quite poetic as the original Clerks, as well as Dogma, had previously played at the festival. Other Clerks II news affected all of us — For the first time ever, a View Askew release date was pushed UP — Taking Clerks II from it’s previous August release date up to a new date of July 21st. Also, in a trifecta of great Clerks II news, we learned in May that Clerks II made it through the MPAA’s screening process without a single cut — And a surprising “R” rating. After that, we thought more good stuff couldn’t possibly happen in such a short time — It was just too perfect. We were wrong! Kevin claimed that this month marked one of the greatest moments in his career when Clerks II received an amazing 8 MINUTE standing ovation following its midnight screening in Cannes, where critics and audiences alike praised the film with a great deal of excitement. The video of this moment was captured and appeared on the online Train Wreck and in Zak and Joey’s fantastic “Back to the Well” documentary that would appear on the Clerks II DVD later this year. For the rest of May, positive reviews of Clerks II poured in. We ended the month with a coverage marathon at News Askew, live from the Red Bank Vulgarthon. We came armed with cameras, a laptop, and a WiFi connection to bring live updates on all the events at one of the greatest Askewniverse events ever.

Things calmed down a bit in June after the back to back Cannes and Vulgarthon screenings of Clerks II — However, halfway through the month we learned of yet another screening – This time in middle America, Missouri of all places, where the film yet again wow audiences, scoring well over the normal test numbers. Poster designs for the film showed up a week later, and we were in love with the character based teaser sheets. Classy, colorful, and eye-catching. Kevin, Brian and Jeff embarked on the biggest publicity tour for a View Askew Production EVER this month, travelling coast-to-coast in North America for several weeks to spread the good word about the newest member of the View Askew family. We really dug a post made by Kevin in mid-June as well, where he ALMOST detailed the secrets behind “Name”, a picture he famously ALMOST made — And also an amazing story regarding a “Pulp Fiction”-esque superhero flick. See the June 16th archive post for that one. Man, we wish Kevin would have got to write and/or direct that one. Press coverage of the nationwide blitz took up the rest of June, and we ended the month with our very own inside look at the Clerks II set — From our visit of the film’s final day of shooting in Leonardo, New Jersey.

With the Clerks II release looming, Kevin, Jeff and Brian continued to ramp up their nationwide tour promoting the film into July. A rare R-rated “red band” trailer also debuted online. Kevin began bringing Clerks II to several advance screenings at lucky theaters around the country, where audiences could get an early look followed by a Q&A session. In all our years doing this gig, we’ve never seen the man travel so much or work so hard — It was an impressive and, we imagine, tiring few weeks. Clerks II celebrated its official premiere at the Arclight in Los Angeles, on July 13, 2006. Our July marked the busiest in News Askew history, as we covered every article, review, and bit of Clerks II ink and video that we could scour. Check our archives to look back on one of the biggest press blitzes we’ve ever seen. July also proved once again that a View Askew Production couldn’t hit theaters without a bit of protesting — This time, from famous critic Joel Siegel, who very publicly denounced the film in a screening he attended, which THEN led to a very public battle with Kevin. Clerks II was released nationwide on July 21st, 2006. Reviews from critics and fans continued to be very positive, with the film scoring higher on famous review site Rotten Tomatoes than anything else posted at the time — An almost 80% “fresh” approval rating. The internet crowd made the film so popular that our site slowed to a crawl for a few days surrounding the release. The flick beat out the much more expensive, and higher profiled “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” opening weekend, and had the best return on investment of any film released. Kevin rounded out July in his first appearance on “At the Movies”, sitting in for Roger Ebert.

Kevin kicked off August by celebrating hus 36th birthday, and enjoying the financial and critical success of Clerks II. It was this month that we also learned his next intended project would indeed break into a new genre for him. Horror. This was revealed and confirmed at the Netflix Rolling Roadshow, which screened the original Clerks on a large inflatable screen in front of a capacity crowd in Red Bank, New Jersey. Kevin made a historical visit to Australia for the later part of the month, both to promote Clerks II’s release there and take a much-needed vacation. At the Edinburgh Film Festival, the film would celebrate taking the Audience Award to close out the month, with an amazing 78% of the audience’s vote.

DVD excitement was the order of the day in September, when we learned the highly-anticipated “Evening Harder” set would arrive before the year was out, along with the Clerks II Special Edition and Jeff Anderson’s directorial effort “Now You Know”. We’d have to wait until November for that goodness, of course. After a relatively quiet year, Ben Affleck started getting press for his turn as George Reeves in “Hollywoodland”. He was awarded the “Best Actor” trophy at the Venice Film Festival. Some rare but happy news for View Askew Productions in early September as well — Producer Scott Mosier got married. With late November release dates in store for Clerks II and Evening Harder, two west coast “watching parties” were announced for the discs — They were scheduled for early November. The end of September marked another new venture for Kevin — That of the professor. Kevin announced he’d be mentoring a UCLA class of film students who would create “mobisodes”, short-run programs on a weekly basis for the MTVu channel. The show would become known as “Sucks Less with Kevin Smith” and celebrate a successful semester in the closing months of 2006.

October blew in with another milestone for us here at News Askew – Our 20 millionth visit. This came and went quite quickly in early October, especially after we announced Kevin would be giving a signed pair of Vanns to the lucky winner. We also learned that Kevin would appear in Hawaii later in the month to receive another much-deserved honor, the Maverick Award. The relatively quiet October wound down with the web premiere of “Sucks Less” on October the 26th.

Things picked up again with November, off to an excellent start as “Catch and Release” celebrated a positive review (and kudos for Kevin) from the widely-read Hollywood Reporter. The Clerks II and Evening Harder viewing parties were held at a new venue for View Askew, Cinespace, to capacity crowds and rave reviews. More news on Kevin the actor, too — It was announced that Kevin would star in a pilot for the Showtime television network, “Manchild”. The pilot would be filmed in December, though no definite word on the series would appear for the remainder of 2006. With the biggest DVD release date in View Askew history on the way later this month, 3 simultaneous titles, we learned that many versions of Clerks II would appear exclusively in stores — Best Buy retail locations promised the coolest collectible of them all — A Mooby’s happy meal box with extra goodies inside. On November 28th, release day, a huge signing event was held at Stash Westwood with celebs and fans galore. We also rounded out the month learning that Clerks II inaction figures were in the planning stages, though at presstime, no release date or details have been announced.

And finally, there was December — This very month. Kevin began the month for a great cause – The “Hero Initiative”. He hosted an event featuring comic legends Stan Lee and Joe Quesada in Los Angeles, which we hear will arrive on DVD in early 2007. In the second week of this month, the “Manchild” pilot was filmed, with Kevin reporting the show to be hilarious, and a successful shoot at that. Will there ever be a View Askew themed video game? Kevin hinted to the fact he’d love to see one in the middle of this month. Two of our favorite View Askew vets, Affleck and Lee, both took Golden Globe nominations this month, Lee for Earl, and Affleck for Hollywoodland. “Sucks Less With Kevin Smith” closed down its inaugural semester with a successful season of shows on the web. We learned Kevin would appear in TWO MORE theatrical projects — A small role aside Bruce Willis in the new Die Hard flick slated for Summer 07, and a voice in the CGI-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. And finally, we coasted to the end of the month celebrating Christmas, and, of course, writing this wordy wrapup — If you’ve made it this far, congratulations.

So then, what’s ahead for 2007? First up, we’ll see Kevin’s big screen debut in a NON-Askew motion picture: “Catch and Release”. A lucky bunch of us got to take in the flick as part of the awesome 2006 Jersey Vulgarthon, and can all attest to Kevin’s triumphant command of the screen. Practically every laugh in the flick comes from Kevin’s ability to deliver a line with perfect timing — His character is the best in the film, by far. We’ll also see if Kevin can translate this success to the action realm, when he shares the silver screen with Bruce Willis in “Live Free or Die Hard” this July. We’ll also hear his voice as a character in the CGI animated “Teenange Mutant Ninja Turtles” flick. On the small screen, we’re hopeful for a full season order for the new Showtime series “Manchild”, in which Kevin will play a featured comedic AND dramatic role. The uncensored, uncut series would be the first of its kind for him.

View Askew Productions doesn’t have anything official on the books for production or release in 2007 YET — The latest rumors we’ve been hearing have Kevin scripting a new horror film right now, the first of its kind for View Askew. We’re hoping that it might start filming in 2007, with lots of news on casting, plot, and more. As for now, mum’s the word on the project. The “Ranger Danger” project is still in the loop as well, though we hear that one’s likely pushed back until at least 2008. But when you’ve been doing this (and been a fan) as long as we have, you know that all of this can change in a heartbeat. That’s Hollywood!

Kevin will also continue to make regular appearances throughout the country in his famous marathon Q&A gigs — Watch (or ask) a college near you about these. You’ll also have a chance to see him at various ComicCons throughout North America, and of course catch him at one of his awesome Secret Stash comic shops (one on each coast).

With Kevin breaking into more mediums that ever, including big turns in film and TV as an actor this year, along with continuing work as a filmmaker through View Askew Productions, we’re sure that 2007 is going to be the biggest year yet here at News Askew. As we move into celebrating our 10th anniversary as a website this Spring, we’ve got a lot of excitement and surprises in store for you as well. We thank you all once again for a fantastic 2006, and hope to see you back here again next year, and for many, many years to come. Happy New Year, and best wishes for a prosperous and successful 2007!

Kevin. Ohio. March 2nd!

December 28th @ 11:46 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • Kevin’s coming to Akron, Ohio for the FIRST TIME EVER with his hilarious live Q&A show/gig — March 2, 2007. You can already find the official announcement on this show along with ticket prices (A mere $4.00 for students of The U of Akron, and a mere $8.00 for the rest of you), a seating chart, and more. Don’t delay as this is probably the most amazingly low price we’ve ever seen for a Kev Q&A, so these are gonna move out the door. We recommend you buy now, and mark the calendar. Here’s Kevin with the official announcement:
Insert “Cleveland Rocks” Reference Here

I’m a-coming to Akron!

That’s right, Northeastern Ohioans – Friday, March 2nd, I’ll be A-ing your Q’s at E.J. Thomas Hall (located on the corner of University Avenue and Hill Street on The University of Akron’s campus in downtown Akron). Bring a blanket, because these things tend to go long, and you might get bored and wanna take a nap.

You can ORDER TICKETS BY CLICKING HERE!

One Cleveland area blogger predicts of the show “No doubt Smith will call Jay on his cell phone and put him up to the microphone during the ‘lecture.’ No doubt he’ll run through the same jokes, the same waxing philosophical of how he made a low-budget classic… Star Wars vs. Lord of the Rings… maxing his credit cards to buy black and white film…”

No, no, no, no and no. There’s little point in talking about that stuff, as it’s all available on “An Evening with Kevin Smith” and “Evening Harder”. As always, I’ll discuss whatever the audience asks about (it’s never a “lecture”); however if the audience asks about any of the topics mentioned above, I will not respond – just to prove this tool wrong.

The tool in question also wrote “And I’m sure that he will keep the fans there late (our audience at Kent stayed until after 1AM) to give the illusion of value.”

This much is true: I’ll probably stay late. Either it’s because I want to “give the illusion of value” or just because… well, what the fuck else am I gonna do once the show’s over? Chill out with this sanctimonious fucktard, who felt the need to add “But a fact’s a fact: this guy is a blowhard and no Orson Welles… just like “Clerks” is no “Citizen Kane”?

He’s correct on two points: I’m no Orson Welles (not talent-wise, anyway; waist-wise, I’m getting there) and “Clerks” is no “Citizen Kane” (though they’re both shot in Black and White). But then, who (and what) is, really? Given that criteria, I guess homeboy never leaves the house – as Welles hasn’t done a “Citizen Kane” Q&A in quite some time.

A fact’s a fact: Welles ain’t gonna be in Akron talking about “Kane” that night (or any night ever again, for that matter), so why not roll up for the 5,987,543rd best thing instead?

(And in terms of being a “blowhard”: I mean, is it really blowhard-y to answer questions about yourself when people are there for the express purpose of asking you questions about you and your work? If I were to refuse to do so, when a thousand folks or more have paid to see just that, wouldn’t that make me as big an asshole as… well, the blogger in question who doesn’t seem to grasp the simple concept of a Q&A?)

So c’mon, Buckeyes (and any of you east coasters who feel like taking a drive that day): eight bucks’ll getcha a great seat in a big ol’ opry house where you can watch a fat guy sweat for, minimum, four hours, while he blabs!

Speaking from personal experience, and we’ve been seeing these gigs and covering them for 10 years now, Kevin does sometimes repeat a story from time to time, but ALWAYS gives it a different spin and different flair. You never see the same thing told the same way. That’s first. Second, as soon as “Evening With” was released, Kevin completely STOPPED telling all the anecdotes on that disc in live shows. We didn’t see a single story from the disc repeated, rather, Kevin would simply reference questions leading to those stories with a “get the disc” type of comment, or a very brief answer. We can only assume that, with the “Evening Harder” release, those stories as well have now been retired. Remember, though, that stuff’s over a year old, so Kevin’s already got at least a year’s worth of NEW, never before heard stuff to spin. Not only that, Kevin’s unscripted, and these stories just come up onstage. The magic of being at these shows is you’re watching Kevin’s creative process happen there and now. It’s not scripted, staged, or premediated. And to anyone who complains about how late it runs? Come on. It’s the best entertainment value for your ticket dollars, bar none.

We never get bored of Kevin’s live shows, and have gone around the country to see them — And we’ll continue to do that whenever we have the chance. You never know what will happen at these things, and that’s part of the fun — The other is that Kevin so effortlessly commands the room and holds your attention that the night just flies on by. Get your tickets NOW before they’re gone.

  • Aint It Cool today breaks the news that a foreign site Kino-govno have a bunch of high resolution stills from the upcoming 2007 CGI based Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. As we reported earlier, Kevin will voice a minor character in the flick, that of a chef. Here’s a shot of how his character will appear. Click for a bigger, better look!

  • A women’s magazine in Denmark titled “ALT for damerne” (which translates to something like “EVERYTHING for the ladies”) has the “Jersey Girl” DVD as a free gift with the magazine this month. That means that a whoooooole lot of women here in Denmark will see the flick which they for some reason has translated to “Storby Drømme” (Big City Dreams). You gotta love those foreign translations. Check out a photo of the DVD cover, as well as the magazine cover, right here.

  • The “Catch and Release” trailer is up in glorious crystal clear Apple Quicktime at the Apple site along with the January 26th release date. There’s a few minor spoilers in the trailer, but nothing major. As always, Kevin provides all the laughs in the clips! Get ready for a great date night out, this January 26th.

  • Inside the pages of the Entertainment Weekly’s Best of 2006 year-end double issue, Kevin makes his impact in 2 different ways. The first mention comes from the question, “What was the best directorial return to form?” Mr. Smith makes his spot in the top 4 of this reader’s poll, along side Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, and John Lasseter of “Cars” fame. Nice company! The second mention is within the dvd sections side-bar awards, the award is for one of Kevin’s thoughts contained in the “Evening Harder” DVD set. Click the scans for a closer look.
  • Sony Pictures reports that an all-time favorite/inspiration of Kevin’s, “A Man For All Seasons”, will be released on a new Special Edition DVD on February 20th, 2007.

Commentary…

December 22nd @ 9:01 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • You know folks, with another year winding down, looking at today’s update topics, we’re guessing this is going to be looked back at a landmark, breakaway year for Kevin Smith. When the year kicked off, the company that was Miramax was in flux, and the way that View Askew Productions would do business was uncertain. Now, in just a year’s time, not ONLY did we have a brand new View Askew flick written and directed by Kevin (one of the BEST EVER), AND slew of new DVDs…But this has been the breakout year for KEVIN THE ACTOR. After showing such amazing stage presence with the “Evening Harder” series, we’ve not only seen Kevin hit the small screen this year, but, instead, make a transition to BIG SCREEN STARDOM! Today, news on his first feature speaking role, the one sheet for “Catch and Release”. Also, BIG NEWS on a sure to be summer blockbuster that Kevin has just revealed he’ll play a minor role in. And of course, there’s that Manchild pilot as well. Three major projects for a guy that started in the biz by directing one of the most independent flicks of all time just over 10 years ago? Pretty cool stuff — We’re guessing this might all make for a fantastic autobiography someday.

But the story’s really just starting, isn’t it? Let’s take a look at today’s news, pretty much all of which focuses on Kevin’s upcoming efforts IN FRONT of the camera!

Kevin Cast In “Live Free Or Die Hard”!!!!

December 22nd @ 9:01 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • When we first reported on Kevin’s set visit, what we thought MIGHT just be a small cameo has turned into a fantastic surprise — Kevin’s just revealed via his blog that he’s spent 5 days of shooting on the set of the upcoming summer blockbuster, “Live Free or Die Hard”, the 4th in the Die Hard series starring Bruce Willis. The series has been a HUGE favorite of us here at News Askew, especically the initial installment, which we still feel ranks up among the best action flicks ever made. So, to hear news that Kevin himself will be immortalized as a character in John McLane’s world, well, we’re pretty darn giddy about it. Kevin’s got the lead-in teaser to this MAJOR announcement, with more on the way. Let’s hear what he had to say of his love for the man that was Bruno today:
Yipee-Ki-Yay, Pt. 1

My life over the last thirteen years has been a series of wish-fulfillments so consistently mind-blowing (at least to me) as to presuppose that, at some point in my deep, dark past, I sold my soul to Satan (”Angel Heart” style – complete with the caveat that I not recall the diabolical deal until Bob DeNiro drops me in an elevator to Hell). Whether it’s been warranted or not (and whether I’ve deserved it or not), it’s nonetheless true. There are some mornings when I swear I’m living someone else’s life… until I look down, am unable to see my cock beneath my hanging gut, and realize “No – it’s you, alright.” Truly, I’ve been blessed. Hate me if you must (some really do).

But, as if that’s not enough for me to be slobberingly grateful for, check this out: lately, I’ve been having dreams I didn’t even REALIZE I had, come true.

For example: for years, I have been in love with Bruce Willis. Not the “Drop your nuts in my mouth” kinda love, mind you; the “Oh my God – Bruce Willis is the coolest motherfucker on the planet” type of adoration we reserve for the people who set the tone of our early, impressionable years.

Back in the day, I was (and still remain) a massive (in spirit and girth) “Moonlighting” fan. David Addison – like Eric “Otter” Stratton in “Animal House”, Tripper Harrison in “Meatballs”, John Winger in “Stripes” before him – was a smoothie of the highest order: quick with a quip and always in complete control of any situation; even those beyond his ken. Outside of all that delicious rat-a-tat dialogue that comprised nearly every episode of “Moonlighting”, one of my all-time favorite moments in scripted television history (right up there with Cooper’s backwards-talking-midget dream in “Twin Peaks”, Dan, Roseanne and Jackie getting stoned in “Roseanne”, and the Galactica “jumping” into a fast-dropping orbit above New Caprica) is in the Paul Sorvino ep entitled “The Son Also Rises”, at the close of which Addison is dancing with Maddie Hayes at his father’s wedding to Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love”. Check out that scene, if you ever get a chance: the man is a goddamned pimp. And since David Addison is, essentially, just Bruce Willis with a different name, Willis is, by extension, a goddamned pimp too.

What wasn’t there for me to like about Bruce Willis? He was from New Jersey. He did commercials for Seagram’s Golden Wine Coolers (the booze of choice for my burgeoning teenage alcoholic taste buds). He recorded an album that was the soundtrack of my entire junior year (”The Return of Bruno”), when Ernie O’Donnell was the first in our class to get his license, and Ern, Mike Belicose and I spent the semester in his shitty old truck with no heat, hitting the Movies at Middletown and trolling from party-to-party on the weekends. I learned to drive in that ol’ beater with “Respect Yourself” blasting from a “Bruno” cassette in a sound system that cost more than the used car itself. Bruce Willis was, for all intents and purposes, the phantom member of trio: the guy we all wanted to be.

And that was BEFORE “Die Hard”.

My summer of ‘88 was wiled away watching John McClane make fists with his toes, pull glass out of those same feet, curse like a sailor while he desperately kicked the ass of a thug twice his size, and end up stumbling half-dead out of a building by flick’s end – one of the first action movie heroes to actually appear damaged by the adventure he’d just undertaken. What started out as a revenge-date I went on with Shannon Furey (in which I’d hoped to make my ex-girlfriend Kim Loughran jealous enough to reunite with me), ended with my longtime interest in pussy taking a backseat to my newfound interest in the events of Christmas Eve at Nakatomi Plaza. With that viewing, the term “Die Hard” went from being the brand of a car battery Sears made to shorthand for every action movie of the next ten years that aped its formula: “Die Hard” in a bus, “Die Hard” on a train, etc.

“Mortal Thoughts”, “Billy Bathgate”, “Pulp Fiction”, “Nobody’s Fool”, “12 Monkeys”, “Armageddon”, “The Fifth Element”, “The Sixth Sense”, “Unbreakable” – I’d follow Willis’ career anywhere (even to “Hudson Hawk”). Last year, I was beside myself when they released “The New Twilight Zone” on DVD, because it meant I could finally re-watch the Wes Craven directed segment entitled “Shatterday” – in which Bruce Willis, as Peter Jay Novins, accidentally dials his home phone number and hears an alternate version of himself answer. This past summer, while in Cannes with “Clerks II”, I watched the daily festival coverage in French just to see the man arrive on the red carpet for the “Over the Hedge” screening.

Fuck you all: I am an unabashed Bruce Willis fag.

So last week, after I wrapped the “Manchild” pilot (which went phenomenally), the very next morning, I reported to work on a flick that’d reveal a heretofore unrealized dream I’d unwittingly harbored since I first watched David Addison limbo in the Moonlighting Detective Agency offices, twenty years prior…

For five days, I acted opposite Bruce Willis in this summer’s “Live Free or Die Hard”

To Be Continued…

After watching a teaser for the film earlier this week, our interest was piqued — It’ll certainly be interesting to see what the new directorial blood does on this one — But now, even moreso, how Kevin will play off of Bruce himself when he takes the screen! Summer can’t come soon enough. Visit the MySpace blog to comment, and watch for another entry soon (we’re guessing over the long holiday weekend — we’ll be here with all your coverage, of course!) We sure can’t help but wonder if that whole Jersey Girl cameo opportunity (which eventually went to Will Smith and caused a small rewrite) was discussed while on set…

The “Catch And Release” One Sheet!

December 22nd @ 9:01 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Doug Prosser

  • We’re quite fond of the clever one-sheet for “Catch and Release” — Kevin scores some nice face space in one of the photo frames at the bottom. While Garner is definitely the lead, the rest of the cast really should share equal billing, as the picture is such an ensemble job (much more than the first trailer indicated). Kevin steals the show in this flick, so if you like his Tonight Show and Evening With type humor, or are just a fan of his work in general, this one’s a must-see. Best of all, if you’ve got girlfriends (or boyfriends) that just never got into the View Askew thing, this one’s the PERFECT date flick to take your significant other to, to introduce them to just how funny Kevin really is.

Take a peek at the poster, and thanks to IMPAwards for the leakage. Catch and Release is currently scheduled for a January 26, 2007 theatrical release — And the perfect dinner/date night for a cold January eve.

  • Today’s most popular submission, by far — Word leaked today that Kevin will be lending his voice in a small “cameo” role for the 2007 CGI “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” flick. While the turtles themselves will not (wisely, we think) have celebrity voices, many famous folks are lending their vocal talents. Kevin’s will be that of a “greasy-spoon chef” according to a USA Today article :

Sarah Michelle Gellar (The Grudge, and TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has signed on as the voice of April, the human researcher who serves as the Turtles’ tech-services worker and mother figure. Fantastic Four’s Chris Evans is the hockey-stick-swinging Casey Jones, and Clerks filmmaker Kevin Smith also voices a cameo as a greasy-spoon chef.

Lots of other press surrounds the voice casting announcements today. You can find similar articles at the following sites : Dark Horizons, IGN, Moviehole, Cinematical, Superhero Hype.
