Kevin: “Almost Half Done”…

February 11th @ 3:31 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Will Wilkins & Jess

  • Kevin’s back with another of his week-end reports. This week, Kevin shot mostly stuff with the actresses of the flick, including a great debut performance from his wife, Jennifer. Sounds like he’s incredibly pleased with the film, which builds the anticipation even more. Anyway, here’s Kevin with that report:
At the end of this coming week, we’ll be at the mid-way mark. This movie’s just flying by.

So what went on this week? Let’s see…

I put my wife on film for the first time, and in all honesty (and I’m not just saying this because she makes with the sex)…

She really surprised me. In a great way.

For a person who’d never acted before, she held her own against the likes of Eliza and Ali (Larter, not Cassius). Fine delivery of dialogue (both scripted and written on the spot – featuring a very, very funny line in the latter, provided by her husband), and a dead-sexy look. I was proud as punch and can’t wait until this week when we get to do more with her.

Shannon continues to bring not only a sweetness to her character, but also some humor that wasn’t that evident in the script. Very proud of her too.

Eliza and Ali were both wonderful, spunky, arch, sexy and born to deliver the kind of dialogue I write (I hear some of you out there now: “BAD dialogue, you fat fuck.”). They’ll definitely be popping up in stuff I do after this flick.

Jay continues to dazzle.

Will continues to be the most hysterics-inducing performer I’ve ever worked with. Fuck, he’s funny. We lose him for about three weeks, but he’ll be back at the tail end of the month to wrap-up his stuff.

But the real stars of this picture (at least in my eyes) are the various crew folks who’re bringing it all to life. From Dave Morton, our master of light, to Tim and his A.D. crew of Heather and KC; from the always top-notch production design of Ratface and his team, to Taylor and Missy, our hair goddesses, and Patty and Sue, our makeup queens; from Mosier and Laura, the real brains behind the operation who scheduled a perfect week of shooting, to Isis, our costume maven (who put the girls in some outfits that’ll leave mouths agape, drooling; from Lisa, Scott, and John, the props wizards, to the two Mikes who control the vast animal kingdom on the show; from the catering cats and the genius craft service gents who keep us not only nourished, but sated, to John, our medic on the front lines, and Tracey, our stills maestro… These are the people who’re making the movie. I’m just sitting back and taking the credit.

But in that pantheon of greats, the shining star has to be Jamie, our sage-like D.P. This movie looks amazing. A-MAZING. You folks will not believe I – the lamest visual director this side of a blind man – had a visual hand in this picture, so good, in fact, does it look. He’s a master.

I hate building expectation normally; it’s far easier to sell something short and let people be surprised by the flick. But I have to say that this flick is really, really something special. Every day we shoot, I’m surprised by how cool it’s shaping up.

Trust me, folks – we saved the best for last.

Mysterio’s Latest On-Set J&SBSB Report!

February 8th @ 12:02 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Bradd Parton, Godfrey & BrodieRat,

  • Mysterio is back with another HUGE report from the set of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. The guy’s got all access to everything around, and, while he’s still doing his best to keep the spoilers down (as are we), you can get a feel for at least what’s happening and who’s appearing in certain scenes in his latest report. Remember, you can read these things in their entirety at Scooping The Monkey or at Aint It Cool News, their original home.
  • It’s confirmed that Ethan Suplee is unable to do his cameo because he (like Duchovny) is still tied up shooting ‘Evolution’ for Ivan Reitman.
  • Joey Lauren Adams, as Alyssa Jones, will just appear in a cameo, like a lot of the other Askew characters, outside of the theater where The Bluntman & Chronic feature film starring Biggs & Van Der Beek is being shown.
  • Kev asked Joey to play Serendipity in Dogma when her role as Bethany fell through due to Miramax’s desire for a different actress.
  • Joey hopes to come back and work with Kevin again in larger roles in future films.
  • Other folks listed as just doing “cameos”: O’Halloran, Anderson, Ewell, Humphries, Johnson, Flanagan. We’re not sure if this was their only scene or if these actors will show up elsewhere. Our bet is that most characters from the previous films will show up in just this one scene (referenced above as a spoiler).
  • Jason Lee will be on set for other scenes, so his role or roles are obviously not just a single cameo.

As always, TONS more to be read on this stuff in the full-blown articles. They’re longer than ever though, so have at least a half hour or so to spare. Thanks to Mysterio and AICN!

Mysterio/AICN Set Report #2!

January 30th @ 6:08 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by NYYThurman & Steven Godfrey

  • Mysterio continues his extensive on-set reports from Los Angeles today with a new edition of his column that covers the on-set happenings at “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”. His report rivals our own On Location reports in size, so grab a drink or a sandwich or something and settle in before you start on this one. The most interesting revelations of this week involve the fact that Kevin and Scott are filming alternate takes of scenes to make them TV-friendly, as Miramax feels the film will play well and be easy to sell to a network if there’s a clean version available. Must be very difficult for Kevin to have to write and manage 2 scripts and 2 versions of the film right off the bat, especially considering the amount of colorful dialogue we’ve heard that’s in this one.

Also, it seems that George Carlin spent a whole day filming on the set, and that some celebs continue to stop by to visit. For the full report, visit Aint It Cool News! We’ll soon be making all these available at “Scooping The Monkey” as well for your convenience, with thanks to AICN and Mysterio.

First Pics From “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”!

  • Hey folks…There’s some SPOILERS ahead, minor ones, but still, spoilers all the same. Since as you know, many fans had the opportunity to be extras at the El Rey theater yesterday, naturally, some reports were going to come in. Naturally, we got a ton of them here and Aint It Cool News even posted some pics from the event, which include a certain film that’s playing on the marquee. We’ve got those shots, and a summary of what we learned about the production. Naturally, we don’t want to ruin any of the film for those of you that want to go in cold (as hard as that is these days), so we’re going to hide as much as we can. We’ve blurred the thumbnails above, but click them if you’d like to take a look. Also, swipe the text below if you’d like to read the information learned about the film. Bear in mind these are not major spoilers, just some small tidbits:
  • The film on the marquee is a “Bluntman & Chronic” movie, which is apparently the film within the film. In this film, Jason Biggs plays the “Bluntman” character and James Van Der Beek plays “Chronic”.
  • The AICN scooper saw a scene being filmed with Jason Lee and Dwight Ewell walking out of the theater and fighting. We’re not sure which charaters Lee and Ewell were playing at the time, but it’s likely that we’re seeing Banky & Hooper there.

And finally, this isn’t much of a spoiler, just a confirmation, but we hear that Joey Lauren Adams DOES reprise her role as Alyssa Jones! We’ll have more from the set as it becomes available.

EXCLUSIVE! J&SBSB On-Set Report & Character Info!

January 26th @ 12:17 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Mike Goldberg

  • Well, this scoop may be even bigger than the pics above…Again, no major spoilers here except for details of who was involved in the scene that was shot yesterday and which characters play what…So if you’re curious about where Shannon Elizabeth, Will Ferrel, and others fall into place in the flick, swipe the text below. Mike’s done a great job of summarizing what he saw on set, and it sounds like extras were in for a treat yesterday, as practically every major player was on the scene to appear outside the movie theater (we’re guessing that a lot of the previous characters from the other films appear in this scene and possibly no others). One of the scenes described here is apparently the end of the film, so it could also be considered a SPOILER, but it doesn’t give too much away, at least from our standpoint, having not read the script. As always, our standpoint on this is READ AT YOUR OWN RISK! If you don’t want to know anything about the film, just move on. If you don’t care if some details are spoiled, swoop away:
Basically, the brief plot synopsis given to us was this: “Bluntman and Chronic” – the movie is to be made, starring James Van der Beek as Jay and Jason Biggs as Silent Bob. (You’ve got to see the posters for this, absolutely hysterical!) Meanwhile, the real Jay and Silent Bob find out on the internet that people are dissing them, calling them “chumps”… so they get pissed off, and go to Hollywood to attempt to destroy the movie – hence their revenge.

The shoot today consisted of two scenes. One was inside a small concert hall where Morris Day and the Time were performing (In case you didn’t know, Morris was Prince’s uh, nemesis in Purple Rain), and Jay and Silent Bob are in attendance, along with Will Ferrall who plays an FBI agent, and Shannon Elizabeth who is a captured convict, (her prison uniform number is 3737), also next to them was an orangutan. Jay and Silent Bob jump on the stage to join them, this is the end scene of the movie.

The other scene was in front of the world premiere of Bluntman and Chronic, and all the familiar faces are leaving in pairs discussing the film – Dante and Randall, Will Ferrall and Shannon Elizabeth , Steve-Dave and Walt, Trish (the dish) Jones, and Alyssa Jones (Yes, Joey Lauren Adams reprises this role), and Banky and Hooper. In front of the movie theatre are posters for fictional movies (Good Will Hunting 2 – “How do you like THEM apples?”, Snootchies, Bussing (In Clerks font), See if you can see… THE SAILBOAT…and the hysterical Bluntman and Chronic poster of Van der Beek and Biggs)

I got a chance to share a couple laughs with Jay, nodded and said hi to Kev (He was always busy – surprise – but he took time out to sign autographs for fans.), got to talking to one of the members of “The Time”, Jerome the percussionist, was very cool… and was thrilled to spent about 10 minutes just talking to Brian O’Halloran – he was very cool, and we just shot the shit about everything. Apparently, this was his only scene, he is to go back to Red Bank and shoot Quick Stop, which he described as a “Fucking freezer”. Brian was most friendly, what a super guy. Saw Jason Lee, but he was unapproachable, pretty much, and he got the most applause when he jumped on the stage to say hello to the crowd. Jason was dressed as Banky, and looked perfect. Saw Randall during rehearsal for his scene, but couldn’t talk to him. Also saw Joey as we were leaving, and she looked gorgeous as ever. Caught a glimpse of Hooper but we were too far away to say anything to him.

Surprise Celeb spotting, Ali Larter (The Whipped Cream Bikini chick from Varsity Blues), we spotted her talking to Jay as we were walking in. Can’t make any speculation as to whether she is in the film or not… BUT, upstairs in the balcony area of the theatre was an interview set up, We saw her being interviewed along with Jason Lee, Mewes, Kev, etc… so we can only continue to speculate…

Very interesting stuff there! We’ll continue our extensive coverage of the filming here and over at our Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back site! Stay tuned as more exciting developments take place.

Dogma DVD: Still No Date & Doherty…

January 24th @ 8:02 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Due to the overwhelming amount of e-mail and requests for an update on the Dogma: Special Edition DVD, we felt we’d better do an update about it even though there’s really no new news, just in the hopes that the mails will stop! Although chains like Amazon and Best Buy are all reporting a release date of April 10, this is all just speculation as there still has been no official resolution to the problems and there is NO set release date. As soon as an official announcement is made, we will have it, rest assured. We want the disc as bad as all of you, and are sad that it’s still not on the shelves. We’ve got a lot of contacts that are involved with the disc though, and are doing our best to keep in touch with them and bring any updates we can. It’s just that lately, there hasn’t been much to say.

Another popular e-mail subject of late is Shannen Doherty‘s involvement in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, due to her name being listed on the Internet Movie Database in conjunction with the film. As far as we know, unless this was meant to be some big surprise, Kevin has not admitted to Doherty’s involvement, and, given their past relationship during Mallrats and her current TV schedule, we highly doubt it. Still, with a film full of cameos, anything is possible. If we hear that she is officially on board, we’ll report it, otherwise, chalk it up as IMDB’s error.

AICN J&SBSB On-Set Report / Extras Details!

January 23rd @ 9:28 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Stephen Humphrey, Matthew Stockton & Bod

  • Aint It Cool News’s own Mysterio has been working hard on getting this together, and we congratulate him on his first of what looks to be many on-set reports from Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back! Almost makes us wanna pack up News Askew and move it out to the west coast! Anyway, the first report involves a reading of the script and a meeting with Kevin, and is quite extensive. The best part of this coverage is that it’s SPOILER FREE, which is the way we like to see things kept around here. So, while he has read the script and will be on set, none of the details of the flick, including its plot and surprises, are going to be ruined for us. Here’s a preview of some of the more interesting stuff:
Is the script any good?

Yes, it is.

Does this script indeed end the ‘Jersey-saga’?

Yes, I’m afraid it does.

What else does the script entail that is on par with Smith’s past films?

Well, pretty much everything is thrown in here but the kitchen sink. It is sure to please die-hard Smith fans that’ve waited to Smith to return to his comedy roots of ‘CLERKS’ and ‘MALLRATS’. One thing I can add about this flick is that it is indeed raunchier than anything he’s written or done before, and the comedy and plot much broader. And there’s not one serious note in it. It’s clearly steadfast in funny-country here kids. So if this is what you’re looking for, then fear not, it’s all in here.

Are past character and other trademarks represented in the script?

Um, yes, of course. But while this film is sure to please most fans, there will always be those few that’ll find some beef against it. There always are. And just a note, Kev does and has kept the fans in mind when writing this flick, and it is indeed hopefully going to be a lasting gift to those that have stuck by him since those ‘CLERKS’ days not-so-long ago.

We’re going to be asking AICN’s permission to repost the stuff on our Jay & Bob page in an archive, but in the meantime, you can read the entire piece HERE.

Latest On VA5 Script & More!

August 27th @ 9:50 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • A few things to report from the mouth of the man himself…He’s on draft #5 now, that being, the fifth draft of View Askew 5 (seems the appropriate time to stop, oddly) that’s been passed over to Bob Weinstein at Dimension.
Just finished. Took me some time, and as a result, the film changed quite a bit. Drastically, even. But when all’s said and done, I like it so much more. It gets turned in on Monday, and it looks like we’re on target for a December/January start.

In other news, I’m doing a bit of Godfathering tomorrow for my cousin’s kid, Amanda. What young Catholic wouldn’t want me as their sponsor?

On Monday, Jen and I head over to Vegas for a few days for the Hollywood Video Convention and some big time gambling. After that, it’s back to work on the ‘GA’ scripts and probably further drafts of ‘VA 5′, not to mention the Toronto trip and ‘Vulgar’ unveiling (the special screening of ‘Jaws’ has become a special screening of ‘Do the Right Thing’, by the by – a film I love just as much).

And I promise, when I get back, we’ll get EJay up and running again.

Kev also said that TIFF couldn’t GET the Jaws print, thus the change. Anyway, that’s about it from Askew headquarters, it’s been quiet, but with all this writing and planning going on, we bet there’s some big news on the horizon.

Kevin Talks “View Askew 5”!

August 9th @ 5:11 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • Well it was natural that when the partial cast list was announced that all of us would start speculating on the plot as well as how much of a “sequel” the film would really be. It sounds like Kevin’s given a lot of thought to that, and wisely wrote a movie that stands on its own for newcomers, but still contains enough slight references and in-jokes to make the film enjoyable on a different level for fans of the other ones. Here’s Kevin with the first of what we’re sure will be many posts regarding View Askew 5’s plot:
I wouldn’t call the flick a sequel to anything, unless you think ‘Amy’ was a sequel to ‘Clerks’, because you found out things like Caitlin wound up in an insane asylum, and Jay and Silent Bob stopped going to the mall.

I wouldn’t call it the ‘Ultimate’ Jersey flick, either. I’d call it the last Jersey flick (or more appropriately, the last Jay and Bob flick).

I wouldn’t expect a classy picture, either. But then, I’ve read the script a few times.

When we finally announce it, it’ll make sense as the last one in what became a series. I looked back on the first four, and they all seemed to lead to this one. Yes, cats from the other flicks will be popping up. But the manner in which that happens isn’t meant to sequelize the previous flicks; those scenes chiefly move the plot along (there is a plot this time).

Anyone hoping for a flick in which all the Hicks cousins meet one another, and Rene’ to show up and meet Bartleby and Loki, and tons of Steve-Dave and Walt action are in for serious disappointment. Stuff like that’s reserved for the comics (indeed, I’m hatching an all Steve-Dave and Walt issue as we speak). VA5 won’t be the ultimate in-joke movie, as that would be box office suicide. It’s designed to be enjoyable to both the neophyte and the master of the trivial as well. Will you enjoy it a little more if you’ve seen the other flicks? Absolutely. Will you be clueless if you haven’t?Not at all. Will you laugh either way? Lord, I hope so.

At the end of the day, some will grouse when they find out what the flick is, and others will celebrate. Some will gather here and post their theories on why it’s not a good idea, and others will attack them for their inane opinions.

Just like with everything else we’ve done up to this point.

Hope this helps with the speculations.

Confirmed “View Askew 5” Castings!

August 7th @ 9:27 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Upcoming Movies, Jess, Aaron B, Zeebadaboodee, Taylor Gruenloh & David Emery

  • As usual, Kevin and company wowed the crowd with a 2 hour Q&A session at the Chicago Wizard World convention on Saturday. Most folks who attended the convention and checked in with us said it was by far the highlight of the weekend. We’ll have some individual reports a bit later, but for now, here’s the BIG news, some confirmed castings for “View Askew 5″, spoken by Kevin to the crowd:
I’m sure he’ll [Mewes] be in it. I’ll be in it. That’s all we need, really. [laughter] Jason Lee will be back. [Chris] Rock is coming back. Matty is coming back. And Brian and Jeff [O’Halloran and Anderson; both from Clerks] are coming back.”

In addition to correcting that Matty error (folks misheard Kev as saying “Ivy” for some reason), we can only assume Affleck WILL be back, since Kevin does promise that the open-end from Chasing Amy between Holden & Alyssa will be solved (though we’re not sure we WANT to know what happens) as well as unanswered questions from the other 3 films. And so, as all of us fanboys and fangirls dreamed, it does look like this will be a sequel of sorts to ALL the films rolled into one.

Production on the still untitled “View Askew 5″ project is scheduled to begin this fall, in October or November, with a planned release of Summer 2001. Those of you checking your calendars would be astute to notice that filming may actually run at the same time that Vulgarthon 2000 is happening. Pretty damn cool, huh?
