• Last week, New Jersey Governor James McGreevey taped 2 segments for the MTV BeachHouse with VJ Hilarie Burton. In one of the segments called “Wannabee”, the Governor played a boardwalk game to compete for one of the videos. He chose J-Lo’s video because she is going to be “Jersey Girl” in Kevin Smith’s next flick (he mentioned it that way on the show, good stuff!). This story was covered in articles in the Thursday, July 11th editions of the Asbury Park Press, the Trentonian and had a pic in the Star Ledger. The segments will run on MTV on July 24th.
• According to the Lion’s Gate website , the Vulgar DVD release has now been pushed back slightly to 9/17/02.
• Rejoice, Region 2′ers – You’re finally getting a Chasing Amy DVD with all the extras intact! Details HERE.
• Both of those CBR clips that ran in the last update originated from the rumour/gossip column “Lying In The Gutters”, formerly known as “All The Rage”, written by Rich Johnston. Just so you’re aware they’re very much rumors at this point, nothing more.
• A favorite of Dante and Randal (as in Clerks: The Cartoon), “The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer” was named #11 out of TV Guides 50 Worst shows ever. Check out the list HERE.
• That flick that we get so many e-mails about, “Chasing Holden”, is out on video this week. Rest assured, there are absolutely no similarities or references to Chasing Amy with the film at all, it’s just a coincidentally similar title.
• Moviepoopshoot.com got a plug in the Online section of the national UK paper The Guardian (long supporters of View Askew). Just one line at the end of this paragraph:

• From now through July 20th, anyone who signs up at the Bikkit.com message board becomes eligible in a drawing for one of three Vulgar movie posters. Visit their forums (which feature a View Askew area).
• Here’s the weird item for the day: Apparently, a pair of women have created a play (starring themselves as Matt Damon and Ben Affleck) in which Matt and Ben find the script to Good Will Hunting after it falls from the sky and launches them to stardom. Matt and Ben’s lawyers have apparently contacted them about stopping this. The play’s website (mattandben.com) has the history of the play, plus all the info on the legal situation, albeit a little biased against Matt and Ben (bitter, bitter)…
• And finally, Something Awful is at it again: This time they feature homemade bumper stickers, and two of them include lyrics from ‘Berserker’. View ‘em for yourself.

• Comic Book Resources reports that the new top secret Glenn Fabry project for Marvel is ALSO the new top secret Kevin Smith project for Marvel — “Daredevil/Bullseye”! Seems logical to us. We’ll keep you posted, take it as just a rumor for now.

• Ming’s posted the latest edition of Kevin guesting on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, with another installment of the always hilarious “Roadside Attractions”! Watch Kevin visit some of the weirdest spots yet, as well as the original Starbuck’s coffee, and work in a Jersy Girl plug to boot! Check out the latest clip (originally aired on Friday, July 12th) and all the rest at the View Askew site.

• Comic Book Resources reports that Kevin wants to bring Mary Jane and Spidey back together in either Black Cat/Spidey or a future Spidey project:

• A piece from a few months back indicates why the author thinks Kevin should be involved in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film project.
• FX is playing the movie “Overnight Delivery”, for which Kevin did some pretty obvious rewrites (the funny stuff) — The flick next airs on Thursday, August 22nd, at 12 AM E/P.
• Meet Daredevil inker Jimmy Palmiotti, Garth Ennis and Amanda Conner signing the advance release of their new book “Pro” at Jim Hanley’s Universe — 4 West 33rd Street in New York City, just opposite the Empire State Building. It all takes place on Wednesday, July 24th from 4 to 7. Afterwards you’re invited to a big Comic Book Legal Defense Fund party at the Josie Woods Pub! Tell them News Askew sent ya.
• Finally today, here’s the full specs on Stolen Summer, coming on September 24th (VHS and DVD). No specs on the actual Project Greenlight piece yet:

• A new column has begun! Kevin has started his new exclusive column for Movie Poop Shoot, and yep, it’s going to cover the production of Jersey Girl! Much like “Developing The Monkey”, Kevin will break some big news in these columns, as well as share with all of us the trials and tribulations that is moviemaking. This week, your eyes will be glued to the screen as Kevin reveals why they’re shooting in Philly, a couple new casting tidbits, budget info, and that the new director of photography is none other than Oscar-winner Vilmos Zsigmond, who shot Close Encounters, The Deer Hunter, and more (Kev’s got a full list.) Here’s a select passage from this week’s entry:

Oddly enough, Jersey itself wasn’t really an option, based on how cost-prohibitive it would’ve been to shoot in Highlands (the shore town our new flick is largely set in). Highlands, unfortunately, falls outside the sixty mile radius of the “Zone” – a nebulous union parameter outside of which the show is forced to put up and pay per diem to every crew member who has to travel to set. Ultimately, this adds to the budget, and we can’t afford to spend the money there, as whatever green isn’t being spent on the de riguer coke and whores has to be allocated for making Philly and the surrounding areas look more like New Jersey.

By basing the production in Philly, we can take advantage of the wonderful crew base that’s been growing here, courtesy of M. Night Multi-Syllabic-Last-Name (the SIXTH SENSE guy), who, apparently, refuses to shoot anywhere but the Philadelphia area, and has made the Powers That Be enough bank to stand by the courage of his convictions. When a brother’s never made a flick that’s broken the thirty-million dollar glass ceiling, he doesn’t get to stomp his feet and say “We’re shooting the whole fucking movie in the real Highlands.” Well, he can, but he’ll wind up basing out of Philly anyway. Money talks, and motherfuckin’ Silent Bob walks.

Another beneficial aspect of Philly over Toronto is that we can simply cross the Ben Franklin bridge and actually shoot in the damn state the flick’s named for. The nearby town of Paulsboro will be playing the role of Highlands for most of the show, when Highlands isn’t able to play itself. For the purists (namely me), however, we’ve scheduled a few days of shooting in the real Highlands, as well as a few days in Manhattan – the city that also plays a crucial role in the flick.

But I’m not gonna lie: the biggest advantage to shooting in Philly is the Cheese Steaks. The whole fucking flick can go straight-to-video for all I care, so long as I get to chow down on Cheese Steaks for the next few months.

• And finally, speaking of DVDs, The following link has the “Michael Allred’s G-Men From Hell” DVD for sale as an “advanced offer before street date” for $22.98. The street date is actually the 23rd July – and to be honest if anyone wants it, and is willing to wait the few weeks for the official release, they can probably get it for a better price elswhere – www.dvdempire.com has the disc for a reasonable $13.99.

The feature movie is “G-Men From Hell” (2000) (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0221197) and was based on the Mike Allred comic-book of the same name. Allred is of course also the creator of Holden McNeil’s favorite comic-book, “Madman”. He also provided a piece of artwork for the Mallrats opening credits, one of the covers to the Jay & Silent Bob mini-series, all of the “Bluntman & Chronic”and “Chasing Amy” artwork used onscreen in Amy… oh, and appeared as himself at the beginning of Amy as well.

The disc also features Allred’s first movie, “Astroesque” (1996) (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0115582), as a bonus feature. This movie was written, directed, produced and composed by Allred. He acted in it too! Might be something cool to check out. Have a good weekend, folks.

• Folks, if you’ve been saving your dollars, waiting for the big stuff, this is THE week to spend them at Auctions Askew! That’s right, this has to be the coolest crop of items ever up in one swoop. This week, you’ve got your chance to wear Ben Affleck’s shoes, that’s right, Bartleby’s screen-used shoes from Dogma! Not only that, but a beautiful, ready for framing rare print of the final page of Holden’s Chasing Amy comic – Way way cool. That missing side of the Mooby boardroom handle has been FOUND! Even if you don’t own the other half, you may want this, if only to even hold it over the head of the guy who bought the first half a couple months back. Hehehe. Stick 2 of 3 from the Stygian Triplets from Dogma is there. And last, but not least, a signed Mallrats poster from the big 3: Smith, Mewes, and Lee! If the bank account wasn’t approaching zero, there’d be some bids coming from right here on that stuff. At any rate, some lucky folks are gonna own them, so bid carefully, good luck!

• We’re sorry to report that Kevin has had to bow out of the Ohio Comic Convention appearance, due to production scheduling goings-on for Jersey Girl. Sorry to report the bad news, but the flicks are the bread and butter and gotta take precedence. Hopefully we’ll have another date for Kevin out in that area to announce in the future.

• TECH TV has been kind enough to post all of Kevin’s interview, even MORE than what aired in tonight’s show, at their website. You can check all that out HERE. The reviewer didn’t seem to be paying too much attention to Kevin’s answers, just moving through the script, still, Kevin always manages to entertain. Not much news here, except for the fact that the World Trade Center will be digitally simulated in the film as it does take place in the 90’s and New York City will be featured.

• For those of you who were fans of his Chasing Amy score (or just fans in general), Dave Pirner has a new solo album, titled Faces & Names, arriving on July 30th. You can also visit his official web site.
• As you might have read, IMDB also reported that Matt Damon may have his choice of roles for the Superman/Batman movie. Apparently some insiders liked Damon in “Bourne Identity” so much that they want him on this project as well. Peterson however said he’s just using him as an example. Read more at Zentertainment.
• Finally today, this is an amusing one — In the newly-released PC game “Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos”, if you have a Death Knight from the Undead race, click on it several times. Eventually it will say “I hate people, but I love gatherings.” Obviously a Clerks/Randal homage from the programmers!
