Jason Lee Interviewed At DVDFile…

March 13th, 2001 @ 2:59 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Chris Shannon, JD, Mike Runy, Shawn Morris, Wes Harden, Ian Mance, Rob Granger, Reechie, Sam, Reyes & Johnny

  • This one may have set a scooper record, as at presstime the scoops won’t stop coming in on this one…Lots of DVDFile readers out there, and rightfully so, as it’s one of the best on the web.

Anyway, with Almost Famous seeing a release today, DVDFile interviewed Jason Lee and again did a commendable job at putting together a really nice layout and Q&A. These guys are good. Here’s an excerpt from the article, where working with Kevin and some J&SBSB stuff is mentioned:

DF: So if Cameron Crowe makes films for the next 50 years, would you want to be in every one of his films?

JL: Yeah, and Kevin Smith, too. And I’d love to work with Lawrence Kasdan again. And I’d like to start this kind of relationship with the Coen Brothers and possibly Paul Thomas Anderson.

DF: Going back to Kevin Smith, what can you say about your work on Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back?

JL: I play Banky from Chasing Amy and Brodie from Mallrats. All the characters come back, or at least a lot of them do, cause it’s the last of the New Jersey movies as everybody calls them. The Jersey Trilogy, whatever you want to call it. So I come back for a couple scenes as Brodie and a couple scenes as Banky. It was a trip playing Banky at first cause I had to find my groove again, but I’m wearing almost the exact same clothes as I wore in Chasing Amy. Exact hat, which I own, which I’m not selling on Ebay even though I’ve had millions of people ask me if I wanted to sell it.

Yeah, it was a trip going from Vanilla Sky to Banky. Bam, I put the hat on and suddenly it’s Banky, but it’s weird. I don’t know any of the crew and I’m trying to find this groove again and I finally found it and it was awesome. It was just like shooting with Kevin again 5 or 6 years ago on the set of Chasing Amy. I haven’t done my Brodie work yet, that’s going to be at the end of March in New Jersey, but that’s going to be cool. Will Ferrell is in it. He plays this character that is looking for Jay and Silent Bob and he’s just fucking amazing. He’s like a dumb, comic genius. In the movie he’s just this dumb guy but what he does as a person to make that happen is just genius. He’s just awesome.

DF: There were a lot of rumors circulating a while back when Miramax bought the rights to Fletch for Kevin Smith. There was a lot of talk that you were perhaps the first choice to play Fletch. Any truth to that? What’s going on with that?

JL: If Miramax allows me to play Fletch then Kevin will do it. But if not, then we’re going to wait.

DF: So, not only are you the first choice, it sounds like you’re the only choice.

JL: That came from Kevin.

DF: I think you’d be perfect for it.

JL: I’d love to do it. It’s the younger Fletch from Fletch Won. It’d be so much fun, my little tribute to Chevy Chase and redoing the sort of 80s Fletch thing.

DF: I really hope you get to do it, because I would love to see it.

JL: Yeah, me too!

You can read the entire interview, and we definitely recommend that ya do, right HERE.

Dogma SE DVD Set: We Have A Release Date!

March 12th, 2001 @ 6:55 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We have just received confirmation that the Dogma Special Edition DVD DOES have a new release date scheduled…That’s the good news. The bad news is that it’s a little later than you might have expected…JUNE 26, 2001. That’s right, folks, that’s when the sucker’s scheduled. The packaging remains the same, from what we’ve heard. That’s about all we know right now as far as that goes.

We’re also hearing rumors of a July 1st release date in the UK for the disc from a lot of you. We can’t confirm anything about that one yet, but that MAY be a date in relation to the June release here, so it certainly is possible. At any rate, stay tuned and we’ll have more information for you as we can find it.

EXCLUSIVE: More J&SBSB Set Pics From Mosier!

March 12th, 2001 @ 6:00 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • As promised, a few more exclusive shots direct from the camera of Scott Mosier to our readers here at News Askew. When Kevin noticed that most of the shots we’d taken of the set from our visit would be spoiler-ridden and couldn’t be released, he thought it would be a good idea that we share some non-spoiler type stuff from the vast array of photos that Scott’s taken so far. So, above, we’ve got a few more great shots. They of course expand, just click on them for a much larger, nicer shot. Enjoy, and look for more right here next Monday!

Part 2 Of Affleck Interview & More At AICN

March 12th, 2001 @ 5:59 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Mysterio’s done an excellent interview with Ben Affleck, thanks to Ben giving up some of his time as well as some nice questions from AICN’s readers. Part 2 of that interview, straight from the Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back set, is now online along with more of his on-set experiences (including the start of the Bluntcave stuff that we were on set for last month). Here’s an excerpt:
MYSTERIO: What are your feelings about ‘JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK’ being the final film in the Jersey chronicles, and how do you feel the character of Holden McNeil has progressed from the ending of ‘AMY’ to where he’s at now?

BEN: (laughs) If you think this is the last time you’re gonna see Jay and Silent Bob in a Kevin Smith movie, you’re high on crack. Obviously, the dude has a total obsession, fixation with himself and these two characters and he’s been promising this’ll be the last time they’d show up in… forever. He’s endless writing ‘JAY AND SILENT BOB’ comic book. He loves the Jay and Silent Bob racket. It’s been good to him. And with Holden, he’s wised up a little bit he’s having more fun. He kind of fucks with Jay and Silent Bob, which is nice. He’s a little more mature; he’s made a little more money and I think he’s stop taking everything quite so much to heart, in the sense that he’s not as easily kind of wounded and heavy hearted as he was.

Jason Lee Interview & Almost Famous DVD Bit…

March 12th, 2001 @ 5:55 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Mike Runy & Dennis Burger

  • The DVD Angle website has just posted up a brand new interview (conducted last Friday) with Jason Lee. You can read it all right HERE. It’s a quick, nice little interview.

The “Almost Famous” DVD, which arrives in stores tomorrow, also mentions “View Askew 5” as an upcoming film for Jason in the cast bios section.

Dogma SE Trailer Appears On VHS!

March 11th, 2001 @ 7:40 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Haub

  • Okay, so we’ve got no Dogma SE DVD still, and this is just gonna make it worse. Though maybe this is a good sign that the thing’s getting prepped for release finally? Who knows. Anyway, here goes.

A trailer for the Special Edition DVD is showing up on VHS rental casettes this week, two we at least know of for sure are “Cruel Intentions 2” and “The Tao Of Steve”. The trailer starts out quite strangely with an older woman warning the audience about sinful stuff “masquerading as entertainment.” Then we get Loki’s line “Oh, lighten up.” It then just goes on to advertise some of the special features and show some of the menus. You’ll catch a few snippets of the commentary, the documentary, and more. It certainly whets the appetite for what’s to come. Alas, still no release date, but we feel it’s a pretty good sign. Anyone out there from Columbia/Tristar wanna check in and let us know what’s up?

ShoWest Scoops…

March 11th, 2001 @ 7:38 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Michael Dequina

  • As some of you may know, it was ShoWest weekend, the HUGE film convention where a lot of new trailers, movie info, and other coolness happens. This year was a good one for Askew, as two cast members, Shannon Elizabeth and Chris Rock, were given awards. Here’s Michael, our scooper, with the latest from the convention:
Just came home from ShoWest this afternoon, and I wanted to give you the ShoWest scoop. The first attached image is the info on J&SBSB as it appeared in the Miramax 2001 release materials that were given out. The second is the poster for the flick that appeared on various walls for the first couple of days of the convention. I’m assuming this is just a very preliminary poster Miramax just slapped-together specifically for ShoWest; after all, it’s exceptionally plain and has that possessory credit that Kevin’s not too fond of. If you can’t read it, the text on the poster reads:

Someone is making their life story into a movie, and they haven’t been paid. So they’re on their way to Hollywood to get even.

Miramax didn’t screen an official product reel for their year’s releases, let alone any early J&SBSB footage; just two trailers and a nearly completed (some final FX tweaking still pending) cut of Spy Kids (good fun, but that’s another story).

In other Askew-related news at the event, as I’m sure you know, Shannon Elizabeth was NATO’s Female Star of Tomorrow and Chris Rock was Comedy Star of the Year. Shannon was obviously overcome with emotion as she accepted the first award she has ever received, as she put it. She thanked family and friends, but most of all her puppies, and she touched on her animal rescue charity.

The awards presentation order was strange, for Chris received his award last (you’d think Comedy Star of the Year would come before Male and Female Stars of the Year). In his acceptance, he echoed the sentiments of everyone in the crowd–or, rather, everyone who was left, for many had bailed early from the four-hour-plus dinner and show: “Isn’t this the longest fucking awards show ever?” Needless to say, that comment was met with hearty applause.

Shannon was one of the few awards recipients who stuck around until the end, and she very graciously signed autographs for and posed for pictures with attendees until security whisked her away against her will.

Seann William Scott also turned in appearance Wednesday night, showing up on stage with Evolution co-stars David Duchovny and Orlando Jones, director Ivan Reitman, and Jeffrey Katzenberg prior to the unveiling of the new trailer for that film.

We’ve got lots of scans, including the Jay & Bob logo (which is the working title logo they’re using all around the set and production, too) as well as the page from the Miramax promotional package. Enjoy, and thanks to Mike for the excellentreport.

  • TONS of you wrote in to let us know about Ben Affleck’s surprise appearance on SNL last night, reprising his role as a friend of one of the “Boston Teenagers” (Jimmy Fallon and Rachel Dratch). The scoopers are too numerous to mention you all, but thanks for sending the news in!
  • IGN Filmforce continued stirring up the rumor mill with this story on the Green Arrow movie buzz. It would appear that, if it were to happen, Warner Brothers would be the studio to release it.
  • George Carlin (who’s got a hilarious cameo in J&SBSB will recieve a much-deserved lifetime acheivement award at the American Comedy Awards this year.
  • Check out page 28 of the March 2001 issue of Mademoiselle Magazine for a blurb and photo of Jason Lee. Lee is mentioned as “Hollywood’s hot new hyphenate” because of his reputation as a skater-turned-star. The cover features Lee’s co-star in “Heartbreakers”, Jennifer Love Hewitt.
  • Finally today, speaking of “Heartbreakers”, the verdict is in as a couple readers checked out the sneak preview of the film last night. Here’s what they had to say:
I am a huge Jason lee fan and bought tickets to see the preview of his new film Heartbreakers. We declared it guys night out and me and 3 of my friends ventured out to see the film. I was totally surprised. I thought that I dropped $8.25 to see Lee, but was actually shocked that it was a terrific flick. Lee’s dialogues is hilarious and he and Jenifer Love Hewitt complimented each other perfectly. Weaver, Hackman, and Liotta also played killer roles and anyone who is a movie buff should see this one. Hats off to Lee for showing he can play different roles and be considered a legit actor.

I just came back from it, and it was great. It’s a really funny, enjoyable flick, and a nice way to spend a weekend.

Jason Lee has a pretty major role, and it’s a safe bet that if the film hits it big, so will Lee. It’s a great performance, Lee plays the “nice guy” perfectly, and some of his scenes with Hewitt are HOT.

Overall, really funny flick. Everyone involved does a good job. This isn’t really hard news, so I’m not writing a full review, but suffice to say it’s a fun way to spend two hours.

There ya have it, folks. Sounds like one worth checking out.

Commentary…Happy Birthday Chris!!!

  • Hey folks, just wanted to drop you a line and say we’ll be back tomorrow with an update, more Green Arrow IGN news, Jay & Bob stuff from ShoWest, and more! See you sometime on Sunday.

Also, be sure and wish Chris a happy birthday today (especially you ladies out there) as he’s turning the big 28. Catch ya later…

Commentary; More Mosier Pics On Monday…

March 10th, 2001 @ 1:25 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Hey folks…Just wanted to take the time to catch up on some newsbites before the weekend kicks off. We decided that Mondays would be a better day to post new Scott Mosier pics from the J&SBSB set, for better visibility as well as maybe a good reason for some of you to get out of bed and come back to work. So, look for 3 brand new, never before seen pics on Monday.

Something else to think/talk about – Has the site been running slower for you lately, namely, since the new forums went online? The forums are quite active and doing very well, however, we’d hate to think that they were causing the site to load slower as this remains our most important focus. So, what do you folks think? Especially those of you with 56k modems? The server that this site runs on can only take so much, we assume, and we may be pushing the limits of bandwidth with the Forums running so actively.

Finally today, I just wanted to thank some folks that I’ve been meaning to for quite some time now for their help and advice a few weeks ago when I was looking for some PC hardware. Thanks to Ken Rogers, Derrick Van Vechten, Jeff Field, & Jason Glover. Your help is very much appreciated and links on the contributors page will be there as thanks to you for as long as this site runs. Thanks again!

By the way, you know that the both of us are suckers for all the reality shows out there…And there’s two cool flicks out there right now that it would be really cool to see. If anyone’s got screener copies of “Series 7” or “Battle Royale” (which is probably really rare), drop me a line. As always, your tapes are safe, won’t get bootlegged, etc etc etc. Oh, and has anyone seen “Memento” yet? Rumor has it that it’s pretty cool and the trailer was intriguing. You can watch the first 8 minutes of that one over at IFilm.Com as well, I believe.

In case you missed it, be sure and check out our on location report from the Jay & Silent Bob set, part 1 of 2. Part 2 should arrive early next week if all goes well. Alright, now for those newsbites…
