A Better Place DVD Update…

October 10th, 2000 @ 11:40 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Vincent Pereira, Ryan Hanssen

  • Folks, we know you’re waiting for this one, so are we. And the fact is that Vincent really would love to have it out by now, the guy wants it out more than anything, but things are just taking long to schedule around. Here’s Vincent with the latest on the disc’s status:
The DVD will be out around Xmas time- it’s been delayed because of the Skywalker re-mix, but I’m flying out to San Francisco later this week and the remix is finally being done. The version of A BETTER PLACE that will be released on DVD (remix and all) will premiere at the Vulgarthon.

The soundtrack will “premiere” at the Vulgarthon too, but will also be sold via other outlets. The Stash will carry them as well, and we’ll probably do some cross-promotions with the DVD when it comes out. The soundtrack CD kicks ass, by the way.

We’re hearing great things about the disc and know it’ll be worth the wait. Vincent wouldn’t allow ANY disc he works with, let alone his first flick, hit shelves anything less than perfect.

Lee In “Black Book”…

October 10th, 2000 @ 11:39 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Jenn Broman

  • Here’s more Jason Lee stuff, mostly focused on the “Almost Famous” type deal, but it does go into his future projects, including that possible Fletch role, so be sure and give it a quick read!
Taking the Lead

From lead vocals to leading man, actor Jason Lee truly arrives in Cameron Crowe’s rock’n’roll odyssey.

by Nikki Toscano

So actor Jason Lee has one vice, and I’ve found it.

“I’ve cut way down,” Lee says. “Literally, over the last week, half a cigarette a day. And I’ll only do it if I feel like I really need nicotine.”Otherwise unscathed, Lee’s honest eagerness to act and learn sets him apart from his chain-smoking Hollywood peers. The professional skateboarder-turned-actor has officially superseded any and all public expectations, captivating audiences in films as varied as Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy, Mallrats, and Dogma, Lawrence Kasdan’s Mumford, and Tony Scott’s Enemy of the State. He chooses challenging roles regardless of pay, and, as a result, his performances consistently make an impact.

With his latest role in Cameron Crowe’s (Say Anything, Jerry Maguire) highly anticipated rock ‘n’ roll project, finally titled Almost Famous, Jason remains an anomaly. But now he’s just moments away from the A-list tag.

“I was going to do [another film] for a lot more money,” Lee reiterates matter-of-factly. “But I was like, ‘No way.’Cameron’s was going to be such an important movie. And so I did it, for much, mcuh less money, and that gave me the best feeling.”

Crowe’s film, which is set for release in September, chronicles the adventures of a young writer on the road with Stillwater, a ’70s rock band on the brink of stardom. Based loosely on elements of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and bands of that ilk, the film casts Lee as lead singer Jeff Bebe, alongside Billy Crudup on lead guitar and appearances by Frances McDormand, Fairuza Balk, Bijou Philips, Kate Hudson, and Philip SeymourHoffman as Lester Bangs.

For Lee, the role took an incredible amount of research and understanding. He soaked in documentaries, consulted with guitarist Peter Frampton, who makes a cameo on screen, and spoke at length with Crowe about the director’s own experience (Crowe modeled the journalist’s character, played by newcomer Patrick Fugit in the film, on himself and his own trip meeting with and writing about Led Zeppelin in 1973). Lee started working with Crowe before rehearsals even began in order to gain the perspective that would be most effective in playing the part–believable to the audience, to Crowe, and to Lee himself.

“I had a lot to work with, and I was forced–by playing that role–to know everything about the character,” he says. “Because if I didn’t know, it wouldn’t be real. And maybe the audience wouldn’t have known it, but I would have, and that probably would have affected my performance.”Obviously, Lee’s concern as an actor is not with celebrity.

More than having his face recognizable enough for easy entry into the Sky Bar, Lee wants to move poeple by playing parts they can identify with. “The good thing for me is that if somebody does recognize me, it’s because of something that they liked or something that they saw me in that they really liked. I’m kind of avoiding the overnight-sensation thing, which is awesome.”Lee’s other upcoming projects include two comedies that he hopes will maintain a balance in his roles. Breakers is first and stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sigourney Weaver. Due out early next year, the film deals with a mother-daughter team of expert con artists. Lee plays a bartender whom Hewitt’s character sets out to swindle but falls in love with instead.

After Breakers, Lee will star in Barry Sonnenfeld’s Big Trouble with Tim Allen, Rene Russo, and Tom Sizemore. The story revolves around a nuclear device inside a suitcase that is rigged to go off in a Miami airport. Lee plays a vagrant who accidentally discovers the suitcase. As he explains it, his attraction to both roles stems from the same pure desire to gain diverse experience in his career. “I like the idea that different directors have different takes on what’s funny,” he says. “I like the idea of being in a comedy and how different that feels compared to something else, and then being able to say that I’ve had that experience.”

Following these particular comedic forays, Lee may take on what will inevitably be another slapstick role in the next project from Kevin Smith, who has secured with Miramax the rights to all eleven of the books on which Chevy Chase’s Fletch films were made. Or Lee may concentrate on his real-life role as a father.

“Life seems a little bit more hectic now, but nothing that I can’t handle,” he says nonchalantly. “I’m still focused on the same things.”

People in high places are taking note of that focus. Lawrence Kasdan had Lee in mind for his role in Mumford. Barry Sonnenfeld met with him early for Big Trouble.

“Getting work from work was always what I set out to achieve,” he says. And he’s done just that with Crowe’s project. “It’s such an important movie. I remember everything about it.”

Lee finishes his half-cigarette and stamps it out, extinguishing his craving and any further talk about his impending auditions for celebrity. We’ll see if Hollywood possesses the same self-control when it comes to the talents of Jason Lee.

  • Could this be the first tidbit revealed from View Askew 5? In issue 110 of Wizard, on page 98, there’s an article about how Clerks 2 is not going to be the next View Askew flick, which we knew. In the article though, Kevin reveals that God’s appearance on Earth was wiped clean from the memories of the characters…EXCEPT for Jay and Silent Bob, but most people think that they’re just high. If this is a continuance of Dogma, it should be pretty fun to watch everyone’s reactions when Jay starts babbling about it. Speaking of View Askew 5, the IMDB’s added it to their database already. Not much there, but it’s a start.
  • The Film-411 site is back with a new design and a cool interview with directory Brian Lynch which you can check out HERE. Be sure and stop by, they’re doing a great job with the site over there.
  • A few more Green Arrow tidbits for ya from Kevin:
I’ve already scripted an Aquaman appearance in the first six issues of ‘Green Arrow’. Certainly not to swing a d*ck and see who writes a better King of the Seas (I defer to those who’ve written upwards of thirty issues on the character), but because it suited the story.

Also appearing in the first six: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Black Canary, Arsenal, and a few others I’ll play a little closer to the chest (or is it vest?), so as not to spoil stuff.

  • A while back we mentioned an old-fashioned homebrew game called TCMGame that was going to feature a Jay & Bob cameo. Check out the first shot of that now by clicking the thumbnail!
  • Tickets for Kevin’s appearance at Emporia in Kansas cannot be purchased over the phone, only at the MU Center at the school, for those interested in attending.
  • Could Affleck take up MORE roles? How he’s gonna do them all, we dunno, but here’s the latest one. We’ll see ya next time.
Notting Hill Director Tackles Angry Drivers

American actors Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Affleck are teaming up to star in a new movie directed by Roger Michell of Notting Hill (1999) fame. The “road rage”-themed film sees Jackson playing a nice guy driving along when he has the bad luck of bumping into the wrong guy. That guy is a mean lawyer – played by Affleck – who spends the rest of the film trying to get his revenge.

Weekend Commentary

October 6th, 2000 @ 6:37 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Well folks, made it through another one…Are the work weeks getting longer and longer or what? Anyway, enjoy your weekend, keep it safe as always. Get out there and enjoy what’s left of the nice summer weather, unless you’re in Michigan or somewhere where it’s probably already snowing.

The anticipation levels are high for Vulgarthon this year, with the event just a bit over 3 weeks away. Don’t expect any major guest announcements for the event as Kevin usually likes to surprise folks, and often has some folks on a last-minute basis and doesn’t wanna disappoint if folks don’t show up. It was great seeing Jason Lee at the last Vulgarthon, and it would be great to see the guy again, but judging by his schedule it’s gonna be a tough call. Great guests like Mewes and O’Halloran are sure to be in attendance, though, and there’s gonna be some great flicks and fans there. We’ve got no doubt that this event will be worth every penny.

We’ve got a couple cool stories today for ya, one from Vincent on a surprise item that sounds like a winner (you’ll have your first chance to purchase it at Vulgarthon) and FINALLY some information on how to phone in ticket orders for the Bloomsburg show. We’re still hedging on attending, but are leaning towards the no right now considering our busy schedules lately and the fact that we’ll hear plenty of Q&A in Red Bank in a couple weeks. Anyway, without further delay, here’s today’s News Askew:

“A Better Place” Soundtrack Mastered & For Sale Soon!

October 6th, 2000 @ 6:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Vincent Pereira

  • Vincent got in touch with us with this way cool news about the official CD soundtrack for “A Better Place”. We know that Vincent carefully puts hundreds of hours of his time into anything he does, so we’re sure this soundtrack is not something to miss. Best of all, he plans to have a heap of them ready for purchase at Vulgarthon later this month. Here’s Vin with the details:
We mastered the A BETTER PLACE soundtrack CD yesterday, and it should bepressed and ready for sale by the Vulgarthon (courtesy of Gig Records,www.gigrecords.com). If you don’t mind me saying, this is going to bethe best View Askew soundtrack album any of you have seen – westructured it like a concept album, with tracks bleeding into eachother, and dialogue clips intersperced in between some of the songs, andwe close it with an intrumental piece that we laid dialogue from thefilm under. I’m really happy with how it all turned out.

With his permission, we’ll try and get some clips from that CD online for you to check out soon as well. Stay tuned!

Kevin To Write For Psycomic (And News On Lots More Stuff!)…

October 5th, 2000 @ 5:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith, Matt Booker, & Jess

  • There’s tons of exciting stuff going on behind the scenes at View Askew Productions, and Kevin’s stopped by the web board to give everyone the exclusive scoop on all the great stuff. In short, read on for the latest on the Dogma and Clerks Cartoon DVD Special Editions, which are shaping up to be the 2 best reasons to ask Santa for a DVD player this Christmas if you don’t already have one, Kevin’s new online column, casting happening for View Askew 5, and lots, lots more. There’s no need for us to say any more when Kevin said it so well himself:
Here’s my big announcement for the week…

As of Friday, October 13th, I become a columnist.

I’ll be doing a weekly column for the folks at Psycomic.com about… well, comics (though I’ll probably wind up talking about much more than that). If you’re a comics fan, check out the site (Joe and Gabe, the guys in charge, are doing a great job with it). If you’re not, then at least pop in to make fun of grown men who’re obsessed with funny books that are neither funny nor books.

I’ve been in Hell-A since Sunday, meeting and greeting potential cast for ‘VA5′ (God, we’ve got to announce the real title soon; I always feel like I’m shilling for Alberto hair-care products when I say ‘VA5′). That’s right – aside from the usual gang of idiots, there will be some new faces in the picture. I’ve met all manner of actors you’re familiar with from other flicks, and a few cats you’ve probably never heard of yet. Don’t ask for names; I’m not saying shit until we lock the whole cast.

Yesterday, we recorded the commentary tracks for the ‘Clerks’ Cartoon DVD. Jeff, Brian, Mewes, Mandel, Bailey, Scooter, and I took our places behind the microphones and cracked jokes, told stories, and basically didn’t bitch as much as I thought we would. It’s all water under the bridge at this point, and we were all more interested in trading inside info on the making of than dishing further on the Alphabet net (though there’s some of that in the mix too). And the Miramax cats putting together the DVD are doing a phenomenal job (props to Shannon and Lydia), packing it with tons of extras and goodies (including Jay and Bob intros to each episode that me and Mewes shoot next week). It’s shaping up to be another View Askew DVD that can’t be missed.

Just like that ‘Dogma’ Special Edition DVD. Fuck, are they making a keeper with that. Mike Stratford, Frank Rodriguez, and Gretchen at Col/Tristar (and our own Vincent Pereira in the home office) have put together an incredible piece of Askeworibilia you can’t live without (alright – you COULD; but why would you want to, really?). Wait’ll you see the sweet-ass packaging and the menus. They’re true Askew.

That’s about it for now. I know it may seem a little slow around here (though with Lee lighting the board on fire, how can it, really? Fuck if my man doesn’t POST his heart out, God bless him), but don’t be deceived. It’s just the calm before the storm. Soon, there’ll be all manner of ‘VA5′ news clogging this site, and other eyebrow-raising revelations (like I’m gay; but then, who didn’t know that already), such as this one…

Because you demanded it!

We broke down and built you a box set. That’s right – now you’ve got something to stick your Jersey Trilogy DVD’s in, regardless of what distributor put out which flick. It should be up in the next few weeks, and I think you’re gonna be impressed when you see it. Sweet-ass art and a well-designed layout of same, all slapped on a sturdy-ass box that’ll look so good on your shelf, you just might finally get laid. I’ll let you know when they’re coming, but it should be just in time for Christmas.

Short of that, there’s not much else to say. Remember – Friday, October 13th. Hit the site often and much (or at least once a week on Friday). I’m signed on for half a year, but who knows? If the feedback’s good, maybe I’ll become a permanent fixture on PsyComic.

Kev’s right, Jason Lee DID post a TON over at the View Askew WWWBoard, too much for us to even summarize here. So, if you want to learn what the guy had to say, we urge you to surf on over there and read. As for PsyComic, it’s a great match and a wonderful medium for Kev to be writing for. We’re eagerly anticipating the results. Damn, there’s a ton going on! Glad to see that View Askew Productions has so much on the plate. It’s going to be a very exciting Fall/Winter season.

Kevin Completes Green Arrow Issue Six, Books Expected Soon…

October 5th, 2000 @ 5:34 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Zeebadaboodee

  • As you probably knew, DC didn’t want to start releasing the new Green Arrow comics until they had issue six’s script from Kevin, and, well, that time has come. Kevin seems very happy with the script and it looks like DC will start soliciting for shops to order their copies. The first of Kevin’s Green Arrow stories should hit shelves sometime this winter. We urge the comic shops around to order a lot of copies, as numbers always skyrocket with Kev on board. Here’s Kevin with the official word:
Today, I finished the script for issue six to the new ‘Green Arrow’ (and I’ve gotta say – it’s pretty darn sweet). This means that DC can now start soliciting for the book.

Depending on how quickly the good folks in marketing can pull together the necessary material to make the Diamond catalogue deadline, it’ll be in either the January or February solicitations.

I’ve also seen all the art to issue one and most of the art to issue two, and it’s great. The boys are doing a fantastic job.

Add to that the beautiful cover sketches I’ve seen thus far (courtesy of Master Wagner), and I can assure you, you won’t be disappointed in this relaunch (well, at least not in the art, anyway).

Huzzah for all of us long-suffering ‘Arrow’ fans (and sorry for causing some of the suffering myself). Our day is now dawning.

Kevin went on to field a question regarding the Daredevil arc (and the death of a couple characters). Folks were wondering if the Green Arrow arc was going to be “sensationalistic” as well:

In all honesty, I don’t think what we’re doing on ‘Green Arrow’ is sensationalistic crap. Ollie is the Ollie most have known for years, and will become even more so as the series progresses. I never wanted to re-create or re-invision the character; I just wanted to tell a good Green Arrow story. Don’t fix what’s not broken, I say (except, of course, that we’re bringing a character that was considered dead back to life; and as mentioned by someone above, I don’t think DC ever really considered the character dead; Ollie was always meant to come back, sooner or later; at least, that’s what I was told by higher-ups at DC, long before I was ever involved with ‘Green Arrow’ as a writer).

And in terms of the ‘Daredevil’ arc…

I think if we’d thrown DD into a new costume, or gave him the ability to fly, or cut off his legs, or gave him a few more limbs – THAT would’ve been sensationalistic crap. As it stands, I don’t think we tried to re-invent the character; just tell another DD story – one that we thought was good. Killing off characters in the process of telling said story is far from sensationalistic crap, as neither was crassly marketed as “BUY THIS ISSUE, BECAUSE WE’RE KILLING SOMEONE!!! HURRY!!!” And there’s a long history of supporting characters and villains getting killed in comics. If I remember correctly, Gwen Stacey (Stacy?) was killed in a comic. Kraven was killed in a comic too. Both are considered great stories, not sensationalistic crap. Having a character die in a book, I think, is bound to happen, sooner or later, and is also healthy for the title. We all love comics, and we all love their episodic nature, but come on – these characters are usually always embroiled in life-or-death battles with their antitheses(is that the plural of ‘antithesis’), and the reader is usually rewarded for their fervent interest in such a story with seeing the villain jailed by story’s end. And nine times out of ten, that’s just fine; it’s something we all accept and justify to ourselves as readers of serial adventures. But every once in awhile, isn’t nice to see something that reflects what the reality of the situation might be? A guy who dresses up like a Goblin and is obsessed with defeating his arch-nemesis (who dresses up like something that doesn’t remotely resemble a spider) – even if he won’t kill him because, for some comic-y bullsh*t reason, it’s more satisfying to humiliate or best him – must eventually cross the line and do SOMETHING to hurt his enemy in some heinous and irreversible fashion, if for no other reason than to feel like he’s getting somewhere in their imagined chess game.

In our ‘DD’ storyline, Bullseye – a long-time bitter foe of DD’s – hurled a club to potentially slay said nemesis. DD’s long-time, on-again/off-again girlfriend (who most long-time readers HATED, as per internet sites and letter columns I’d read and re-read, prior to my story arc) jumps in front of the projectile, in an effort to save her love, and is slain in the process for her trouble. I, and many, many others, felt it was a poignant death – hardly sensationalistic. And the writers that followed me have been able to use Karen’s (the character in question) death in their stories (some unpublished, as of yet) for their benefit, as DD’s loss gives them something new to play with while writing his character.

As for Mysterio – come on. Here was a character nobody but me and JM DeMatteis appeared to give a sh*t about anymore, UNTIL he was dead. Suddenly, because some older and more established writers felt my editorially-approved killing off (and, for the record, the character took his own life, and was dying anyway), I was made the whipping boy. “Who does this newbie think he is, killing of our beloved Mysterio? *F* him!” (and for the record, it was worked out with then-editorial that while Quentin Beck was, indeed, dead, Mysterio didn’t have to be; let’s be honest – Mysterio’s really the suit; how many readers even really knew his name was Quentin Beck?). And the fact that the character’s BACK in the Marvel Universe (albeit, a little too soon, for my tastes) should take the heat off me for that move, as I didn’t actually kill of two characters, ultimately; just one.

But enough of that. If you want to consider the ‘DD’ run as hypocritical nonesuch – and my condemnation of the ‘Aquaman’ revamp as a case of the pot calling the kettle black – that’s okay. At least you read both the ‘DD’ run and that ‘Preacher’ trade paperback (in which that comment was made), as well as, presumably, ‘Aquaman’ – so that means the comics industry, contrary to popular belief, isn’t dead.

And even if you didn’t like what we did on ‘DD’, then maybe you’ll read the ‘Green Arrow’ run – if for no other reason than just to see if I’m a total hacky hypocrite. And that, too, will be good for the comics industry. Because, at the end of the day, isn’t that what we all want – the longevity and vitality of this pocket of the literary arts that we all love and support?

And on a side note: that metagene stuff? I got nothing to do with that, and it’s not addressed in our run at all. So I’m not taking a bullet for that.

Again – I’m not reinventing the wheel on this title (just like I didn’t try to do on ‘DD’); I’m just adding another spoke. I have tons of respect for continuity (just ask Scott McCullar), and I’m not going to disrupt any of it – trust me. Even with bringing Ollie back from what many presumed (and rightly so) was his death, I’m STILL not disrupting continuity. It’ll all come together by the end of the twelve issue arc.

And if you don’t like it then, well jeez – you guys are f*cking tough.

(Please excuse the * stuff; I’m not sure if you can hurl even mild obscenities in this Warner Bros.-financed forum).>>>>>

  • Wow, alright, it’s obvious why you folks stay away from the Talkbacks a lot. Man are they ever SLOW! We PROMISE to work on that soon, it’s been busy for the longest while ’round these parts. Between Chris moving to yet another new place and me working on stuff around the house, neither of us have had a lot of time to take some looks at improvements regarding the general running of the site. It’ll happen though, especially with the colder weather coming around. When ya can’t go outside without freezing your ass off, it’s always easier to justify some time in front of the PC.

The TV season is starting to kick in as well, and that doesn’t help matters. Buffy and Angel both got a lot better this week, and Dark Angel‘s taping at the moment. Anyone seen anything else decent on TV lately? Feel free to use the talkbacks if you can stand the wait! Oh, and has anyone caught the full length Blair Witch 2 trailer yet? Actually looks pretty friggin’ good. If they market that sucker right, and don’t give any more away, Artisan could have a big Halloween hit on their hands.

Moving on to the matters at hand, just a few newsbites that have been hanging around that we thought we’d get out. It’s shaping up to be a fairly quiet month up to Vulgarthon when all hell breaks loose. Stick with us, though, there’s always SOMETHING worth talking about around here, we’ll keep it interesting. Poll topics are getting to a shortage again and, while we can come up with some on our own, suggestions are still always welcome. Now then, let’s just get through this small bit of news for today. Be sure and vote in that new poll topic over to your left, too:
