  • Well, even with taking the day off yesterday, there’s still not a lot to cover today, but we’ve got a few things worth mentioning, for sure. Hopefully you all caught Exposure on Wednesday, complete with Kevin’s great hosting job. If not, we’ve got details on how to catch a rerun, as well as your area for talkbacks on the program below. Those of you who watched Survivor will be happy to know that Sci-Fi will give you a few more chances to see Exposure before it never airs again. By the way, how about that Sue on Survivor huh? What a horrible person she is. While Rich may not have been everyone’s most popular choice, at least SHE didn’t get the money. Thank goodness for that.

Things have been very quiet around here lately. It’s always nice to get a break, though, especially with the various duties and commitments that summertime brings. Still, we anticipate some excitement around here soon. If Vulgarthon 2000 is happening around Halloween as we’d heard earlier, there should be a big announcement along those lines very soon. Then, starting December, things are gonna go nuts around here when View Askew 5 production starts, along with 2 BIG DVD releases. Until then, we’ll be here, and we’re sure that there’s gonna be some unexpected surprises to keep things interesting.

Exposure – Last Chance To Catch It On Sci-Fi…EVER!

August 25th, 2000 @ 4:15 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Dave Bednar

  • Alright, alright, we hope you listened to us but we KNOW that some of you still tuned into Survivor on Wednesday night instead of Exposure. That’s OK, we forgive you. THIS time. But seriously, SciFi’s been kind enough to keep the show on the schedule a few more times before it never airs again (that’s right, our press release says this show will not be rerun on the channel, at least, that’s the plan). In other words, tune into one of these airings if you’ve yet to watch:
Friday, August 25      — 7:00 PM EST
Saturday, August 26 — 11:00 AM EST
Sunday, August 27    — 11:30 PM EST

Feel free to post your Exposure comments on the show, the clips, and Kev’s hosting duties right here!

Wizard Plugs Upcoming “Clerks TCS” DVD…

August 25th, 2000 @ 4:13 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Nick Lynch & Marty McFly

  • First of all, we’re sorry for everyone who DID scoop this and didn’t get credit. We hedged on posting this item because we were unsure about the date it gives for the DVD’s release…And we STILL are, but we continue to get so much mail on this small item that Wizard ran on the Clerks cartoon series DVD planned for this winter, so we figured we’d best run it:
‘CLERKS’ GET COLLECTED FOR HOME VIDEO

All six episodes, just in time for Christmas

There’s a little naga-nootch under the tree this year. A little swearing, too.

The full run of Kevin Smith’s “Clerks” cartoon will finally be available for public consumption. Buena Vista Home Video has slated a “Clerks” VHS and DVD collection for December.

The ill-fated “Clerks” was scheduled to run as a mid-season replacement show on ABC in early 2000. When the show was pushed back to a May release, a much-publicized feud over scheduling broke out between Smith and the network. Only two “Clerks” episodes aired before the show was canceled.

The VHS and DVD collections will feature all six episodes that were made, along with Smith and Jason Mewes in all-new intros, playing “Clerks” characters Jay and Silent Bob. Smith and “Clerks” stars Brian O’Halloran (Dante) and Jeff Anderson (Randal) are also doing commentary tracks for DVD. Behind-the-scenes stuff, including developmental artwork and aborted scenes, will also be shown.

“This is why I got into TV in the first place-so I could get another DVD into the marketplace,” Smith said, a little on the sarcastic side. “Like all the other View Askew DVD efforts, we’re going to pack this one as well, so there’ll be some bang for the buck. And since it’s not airing on TV, Jay and I will curse like longshoremen in our intros. That’s gotta be worth another five bucks, at least.” -Jim McLauchlin

  • Alright, back stateside with a brand new update, and some fun news at that! By the way, a few fun facts about Canada that you probably wouldn’t know unless you’ve been there, or have Canadian friends:
The Canadians LOVE their donuts, perhaps even more than police officers. There’s a chain called Tim Hortons that I swear has an operation every 50 feet by law. I couldn’t help but wonder if there were places in Canada where you could stand at one Tim Hortons and visibly see another one.

You can swear all you want on the radio; they don’t censor expletives out of anything that gets airplay.

The CN Tower in downtown Toronto is the largest free-standing structure in North America.

Sleeman (beer) tastes as good out of the tap as it does from the bottle.

And finally…it’s not “bathroom”, it’s not “restroom”, it’s “WASHROOM”.

That being said, Canada’s a nice place to visit. And with the Toronto Film Festival coming up, it’s a pretty good time to get up there. Speaking of that (nice segue, huh?) there’s rumblings of yet another Kevin appearance up there next month, a new Rolling Stone interview that Kev helped with, and more in today’s edition of News Askew:

Smith Interviews Stan Lee For Rolling Stone…

August 23rd, 2000 @ 5:24 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Torrey, Kolin Kalmbacher, Andrew Craig & Jason

  • This month’s Rolling Stone has a small one-page piece where Kevin sits down with comics legend Stan Lee to ask questions about his upcoming stint with DC, his thoughts on being a workaholic and yes, superhero sex organs. Here ya go:
JUST A FEW DAYS after the $54 million opening week-end of X-Men – a film based on one of Stan Lee’s countless Marvel Comics creations – the real, live, profoundly influential comic-book hero is in his office looking youthful, sharp and even kind of hot for an old dude.

He’s also busy, having recently agreed to engage in a major act of comics glasnost: He’s going to the other side, DC Comics, and doing a new series in which he will reinvent his lifelong competition’s characters. In the comic world, this represents a stunning, even shocking turn of events, like Magneto joining the X-Men. Not, mind you, that taking the comic medium into the future on StanLee.net, the online home of some of his latest creations, wasn’t time-consuming enough.

Still, Lee is squeezing in a visit from Kevin Smith this afternoon. Smith, the wildly gifted filmmaker (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma) and devoted comic-book enthusiast, is such a fan that he enlisted Lee to play himself in his 1995 movie, Mallrats.

“Holy cow, Kevin,” says Lee, greeting the filmmaker in his San Fernando Valley offices. “How are you? You look terrible.”
********

SMITH: For those with no clue as to how deeply integral you have been to pop culture for the past fifty-plus years, can you take a moment and list some of the major characters that you had a hand in creating?

LEE: The Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Spider-Man, X-Men, the Avengers, Daredevil, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Nick Fury and the Silver Surfer.

SMITH: People who don’t even read comics have heard of those characters.

LEE: Only because I’ve been shout-ing the names around.

SMITH: You really are the ambassador of the comic-book world.

LEE: I’m a huckster. My wife, Joan, says, “I married a goddamn flimflam man.” Don’t put in “goddamn.”

SMITH: When you list all those characters, do you go back to the moment you created them?

LEE: I can’t remember coming up with them. We didn’t know there was anything special. It was a job. I was trying to make a living. I hoped they would sell so they would keep paying me. The funny thing is, I have been creating characters all my life, but they never caught on like the superheroes. For years I did stuff like Tessie the Typist and Hedy of Hollywood.

SMITH: How did you get along with the artists who brought your ideas to life? Because we should say, in all fairness, you are a writer. Some people who don’t know comic books think you just draw comics.

LEE: I work with artists. I had the best artists. I didn’t have to be that good. I had artists who were geniuses. I had artists who – I could give them two words, and they would draw the whole story. All I had to do was put in the dialogue, and I loved doing it that way. Like doing a crossword puzzle.

SMITH: Now you’re going to DC for the first time ever. You’re going to do a reinterpretation of Superman – as if Stan Lee created Superman – Batman, Wonder Woman. We’re kind of taking a little trip back in time, as if you had been on the DC staff versus the Marvel staff.

LEE: Exactly. But it’s not a reinterpretation; it’s basically what I would have done if I had created such characters.

SMITH: How does it feel going over there? Some people wonder, “How could he bear to go work for the competitor?”

LEE: No, we were very friendly. It was nice. We were in the same business. A lot of people think I have defected from Marvel; I haven’t at all. I’m still with Marvel. This is just one offer that was made to me that I don’t think any writer could resist. I am now the chairman emeritus of Marvel. I love Marvel. And I don’t think me doing these books is going to hurt Marvel at all. It’s just such a provocative assignment. If some good will come of it, I’m delighted.

SMITH: Comics being the young man’s game it’s supposed to be these days, is its daunting task to be jumping into the other person’s sandbox and playing with their characters at this point in your life?

LEE: This may sound terrible, but I have never felt daunted by anything. The only thing that worries me – and I’m very worried about this – is getting the time to do it. I finally wrote the outline for the Wonder Woman story, and I want to use the Marvel Method – so after that comes the art. I sent the outline to Jim Lee, and he already sent me about ten pages of art, which I wrote the text for. I wrote it in a couple of hours. The artwork looks beautiful. If I were daunted by doing things, I would be daunted now with StanLee.net, because almost every day I’m doing something new that I haven’t done before. I didn’t know anything about writing for the Internet.

SMITH: In the last year, Stan Lee enjoyed big success. X-Men was just released – big success. StanLee.net – huge. A Spider-Man movie is finally heading into production. And now you’re doing the whole DC crossover thing. How old are you?

LEE: Seventy-seven, but I’m a late model.

SMITH: Most people are retiring at seventy-seven. How do you top it? What do you do next year?

LEE: That’s what’s fun: You just never know.

SMITH: I would imagine the vitality that it all breeds is phenomenal. You don’t look seventy-seven. You don’t behave seventy-seven. You don’t sound seventy-seven.

LEE: I’ve been very lucky. I’ve always worked with people where age didn’t matter. I mean, right now, my staff of artists, they’re all young. But even when I work with old guys, they act young and they think young. In our business, I don’t know how you can get old. You’re telling stories to people and you’re having fun. I think you get old when you don’t enjoy your work. People ask why I don’t retire. I tell them, “Retire from what?” I’m playing, I’m not working.

SMITH: Final question, and this is for all the adults who have been reading comics forever. Is The Thing’s dick made of orange rock like the rest of his body?

LEE: Your guess is as good as mine.

SMITH: Stan, you have to know. You were there. You were the guy.

LEE: Well, let’s assume that it is, because that’s sort of a fun fact to play with.

SMITH: Finally – on the record.

Special thanks to Torrey for providing the actual transcript of the interview for posting!

  • During a press conference held at the Toronto Film Festival’s official web site, an astue News Askew reader overheard the spokesman say that Kevin was going to be involved in their Dialogues series this year, speaking about Spike Lee‘s “Do The Right Thing”. In the series, filmmakers talk about movies that influenced their early careers, so this sounds like it could be right. Could Kev be going back to Toronto for the second year in a row, since Dogma made it’s North American debut there last year [News Askew was there with coverage]? We’ll keep ya posted.
  • Here’s your chance to catch up on a couple of View Askew TV apperances you may have missed: First of all, tomorrow, Thursday, August 24th, Sundance will re-air Conversations in World Cinema: Kevin Smith at 2:00 PM. It should be running more often than that, but that’s the first re-airing.

Also, Friday night marks the rerun of Jay Mewes’ Kilborn appearance that we missed the last time around. Check it out if ya missed it.

  • Jim Mahfood has posted the pic of the one-sheet that will contain his and Kev’s autographs for the limited edition Clerks hardcover. Looks very cool. Click the thumb for a better view.
  • Remeber that Playboy.Com contest for shorts that Kev was helping to judge? We mentioned it a long while back. Well, the winners have been officially announced, and oddly enough, “Tripping The Rift”, debuting on Sci-Fi’s EXPOSURE tomorrow night, took top honors. You can view it, full and uncut, along with the 10 honorable mentions, at the Playboy website HERE. You should probably wait until you get home from work unless you want the boss to black flag you.
  • The latest copy of Toyfair #38 has a small interview with Paul Dini that has some interesting trivia in it:
TF: Mmm…Well.you’ve done some cartoon voice work yourself. Didn’t you play a part in Kevin Smith’s Clerks Cartoon?

PD: For some reason, Kevin thought I could act, so he kept sticking me in to do voices, I did George Lucas’ voice in the trial Episode ”

TF: Where’d you learn that one?

PD: He’s my old boss, I used to write and produce the Ewoks and Droids shows, way back when. It was one of my first jobs I ever had.

  • Well mark this as the first update done from a different COUNTRY…At least in part…This is Brad doing the first leg from Canada…I’m up here visiting my girlfriend and having a blast. Spent the day in Toronto yesterday and went to an AMAZING Paramount movie theater downtown to catch “The Cell” – Is it just me or is that flick a little overrated? I dunno. Anyway, Chris is in Harrisburg doing the second leg of the update, so this marks the first one we’ve done across 2 countries. Pretty cool, eh? Look at that, I’m saying “eh” already. I’d best get home soon.

Anyway, due to the vacation and all things have been a bit slow, but thanks to the magic of a laptop and an ISP that’s got local dialups in Canada, we can keep up with everything. Not that there’s been much to keep up with. Actually, just a couple of minor newsbites today, but we still thought they were worth a mention, and just so ya knew we were still around…

  • Jeff Allen, the creator of Trooper Clerks, has posted his pics from WizardWorld 2000, and there’s some of Kev & Jay in there. You can check them out HERE.
  • The animated Clerks website was named a Ghost Site over at Disobey.Com.
  • Comic Book Resources have posted a story on the Green Arrow comic.

That’s about it, folks…We’ll see ya next time!

State Of The Askew…

August 18th, 2000 @ 9:30 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Chris

  • Hey everyone. Kevin stopped by the WWWBoard today with one of those updates we love to see. Lots of good tidbits included here, so check it out:
Time for an update.

There are a few irons in the fire, some of which are out of left field, but very welcome. Look for two cyber-related announcements in the coming weeks that should delight many and tickle the fancies of a few.

Also, for the ‘Green Arrow’ curious: I’ve turned in issue four of the new series, and I’ve seen the completed pencils of issue one, which Phil and Ande did a bang-up job on. It’s going to be one sweet book. Two more scripts get submitted, and DC starts soliciting for the book.

On the flick front: I’ll be turning in draft five next week. With all the Cons and various stuff, I got side-tracked. The thought now is to start shooting in December. More on that as it develops.

I understand I’ll be seeing some of you at Lincoln Center in a couple of weeks. I’m honored I was asked to be a part of the program, and hopefully, we’ll make it worth the price of admission.

For any of the intrepid heading up to Toronto, the ‘Vulgar’ screening is going to kick much ass. We’re throwing a huge shindig up there after the screening, and I’ll be introducing a screening ‘Jaws’ the day before. Should be very cool.

Coming up in the Rolling Stones ‘Hot’ issue, I’ve got a brief interview with Stan Lee. Worth checking out.

The ‘Dogma’ DVD is going to be HUGE. The menus and animation sounds cool, and the packaging is sweet – ‘Fight Club’ sweet. It’s still slated for January.

The ‘Clerks’ Cartoon DVD is shaping up nicely as well. That’ll be late January.

We’re going to be offering a nifty new item very soon: a box set for your Askew DVD’s. They should be done and ready in a few weeks. We’ll have pics to show you soon.

That short I mentioned once before is now a no-go, but we may be shooting it during VA5. More on that as it develops.

And that’s about it for now.
