  • Scott, the webmaster at ICQ Askew, is asking readers for submissions for his brand new site, which he says is, “Basically just a place where there will be stories from his fans about how the movies have affected there lives or funny stories relating to a viewing of the trilogy and things of this nature.” You cand send your submissions totribute2kevin@hotmail.com if you’re interested.
  • From the Globe and Mail (Canada’s business/editorial paper) comes an article on Page C1 – the Arts and Leisure Column. The article is by Johanna Schneller (”THE MOVIEGOER”) and is titled ” Who ya gonna call when major studios retreat?” It’sa somewhat lengthy editorial is about the major studios bailing, editing or renaming movies since Columbine, giving smallerstudios a chance to nab up some of the more interesting flicks. Here’s the bits pertaining to Dogma:
“Lion’s Gate most talked-about acquisition may be Dogma, a very modern take on Catholicism staring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as angels and Alanis Morissette as God. Writer/director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) – who is himself a Catholic – originally made the movie for Miramax, the powerful former indie now owned by Disney. But when the American Catholic League whipped up a storm of protest, Miramax honcho Harvey Weinstein bought the film back from his own company and began looking for a distribution partner. Disney was leery of the pressure the Catholic League had put on an earlier Mirimax film, Priest, about a gay preist. (Lions Gate’s negotiations for Dogma should be settled “any minute now,” according to spokespersons.)

The Question is this: Is Lions Gate’s agenda a genuine crusade for artistic freedom, or just a cynical marketing ploy? “We don’t intentionally ask, ‘What will be controversial’ ” said Jeff Sackman, president of Lions Gate Films. “But we don’t shy away from controversy, either. We’re big, big believers in: Let the viewer decide. People are free to protest our movies; the important thing is, others are free to go see them.”

It doesn’t hurt that the protests whip up media interest either. “Any hook that allows us to break out of the clutter is fine by me,” Sackman said. “You’ve got to get people’s attention.”

  • Finally today, a regular News Askew reader, Nick Lynch, had a piece published about his Wizard World experiences. Hethought you folks might like to read it, too:
MY DAY AT WIZARD WORLD

On July 16, I went to the Rosemont Convention Center in Chicago for the third annual Wizard World Comic Convention. For those of you who don’t know what Wizard World is, it is the “ultimate multimedia entertainment event under one roof.” It is brought to you by Wizard Entertainment which publishes Wizard: The Comics Magazine, Toyfare: The Toy Magazine, and InQuest: The Gaming Magazine. This place brings together the best of sci-fi, celebrities, pro wrestlers (Like WCW star Kevin Nash), rappers like Method Man and Rza of the Wu-Tang Clan, actors like Ray Park and Anthony Daniels from Star Wars, comic book writers and artists, toys, gaming, Japanese animation, and all sorts of other stuff.

What’s cool about Wizard World is the fact that, unlike most sports athletes who are so full of themselves that they don’teven acknowledge that you’re there, the comic creators will talk with you and have fun with you. I had a chance to talk with many comic book writers such as Mark Waid, Devin Grayson, Garth Ennis, and many others. I also had the chance to goof around with Wizard senior staff writer Jim McLauchlin.

When I first got there, I went to look at the exhibitor booths, which included DC Comics, Wizard Entertainment, Todd McFarlane Productions/McFarlane Toys (Todd McFarlane is the guy who bought Mark McGwire’s 70th home run baseball), Oni Press, and View Askew Productions. At these sights, you could get all sorts of free stuff like catalogs, posters, pins, information packets. My favorite booth was the one at View Askew Productions. View Askew Productions is a company run by filmmaker Kevin Smith, whose films include Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and the upcoming Dogma. It was my favorite because of the stuff you could buy there like DVD’s, videos, t-shirts, posters, movie scripts, comic books that Kevin Smith has written, bumper stickers, hats, pins, action figures of Jay and Silent Bob, and hockey jerseys (they have the View Askew Logo on the front which is this weird looking clown, and are all numbered 37). Also, the people working there, Walt Flanagan and Brian Johnson, were somewhat celebrities to fans of Smith’s movies, and were kind enough to take time tohave a picture taken with me.

When I was done checking out the exhibitor’s booths, I went to go get in line for Wizard World’s guest of honor, Kevin Smith. I got there early enough to get his autograph on two comic books, signed with a different message on each one. For example, on a Clerks comic that he autographed, he wrote, “Nick, Clerks is a way of life!” After the autograph session, I went to a Q&A that featured Smith. Smith came out and greeted everyone with a joke, and then let the crowd ask him questions. I was able to ask him one. He talked about how the Superman movie became all screwed up thanks to Jon Peters, the producer, when Smith wrote a draft for the movie. He said this is one reason why independent movies are better than the stuff Hollywood produces, simply because the producers don’t interfere. Smith also took questions abouthis upcoming feature film Dogma saying that it did have a distributor, and he took questions about the comics he has written for Oni Press and Marvel Comics. At about the end of the Q&A, Smith showed the crowd the rough-cut of the Dogma trailer and a scene from the movie.

When the Q&A was finished, I went to have lunch. Here is some advice for anyone who goes to a convention, DO NOT EAT THE FOOD!!! Not only does the food taste worst than Denny’s, but it also had Planet Hollywood prices, which is like four bucks for a hot dog. When I recovered from lunch, I went to something called the McLauchlin group, which featured comics writers Jeph Loeb, Mark Waid, Erik Larsen, and Brian Pulido and also was a spoof of the PBS news show with a somewhat similar name. The way this worked was Jim McLauchlin would ask a question about comics and each creator would give an answer. For example, Jim asked, “What would you rather do? Write an X-Men book, or have a nail driven into your hand?” Waid says “You can drop the space needle on my hand and slam it with a sledge hammer.” Leob responded “How big is the nail?” Pulido stuck his hand out and Larsen said that he’d write an X-Men book. What was the correct answer, you ask? It was “how big is the nail.” Mostly, this was just five guys making smart aleck remarks, but it still was one of my favoriteparts.

Also, although I didn’t do this, there were classes for writers and artists trying to break into the comic business. You can also give your work to major comic book companies like DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Image Comics, etc. If you want to do this, show up with a portfolio with copies of your work so you can give copies of your work to different companies. Also, don’t expect a call about your work right away, because there are a lot of people who do this. Lots of times, you won’t get a call, period.

Another good thing about Wizard World is the fact that you can buy almost anything. They have stuff like older comic books, movie posters, such as The Matrix, action figures, copper busts of superheroes, videos, and drawings from actual comic book artists.

Over all, let me just say this is one of the most fun places I have ever been to. The creators were great. I got to meet a filmmaker. I bought some great comics and a cool looking Mallrats poster. Just remember what I said earlier, DO NOT EAT THE FOOD!!!

Have a great weekend, folks!

  • Yep, we’re somehow managing to throw another update out here before the vacation weekend…Why? Because we care, dammit. There’s a few things going on really that we’ve gotta report on, nothing major, but enough that told us we at least better get SOMETHING for ya to read this weekend…

  • Jim Mahfood checks in again with more stuff on the Clerks animated series. Turns out that his involvement with the show may not be as close as we’d originally though, but he seems pleased with what’s been done so far. It’ll be neat to see what the style they’ve come up with is now, since we’d always pictured that Mahfood look to the whole show. We’re sure it’ll still be good, though. Here’s Jim:
Kool Kieth, Clerks Animated, and other bullshit
by Jim Mahfood

…

Now let’s talk about the Clerks Animated series. The series WILL NOT be based on my drawing style. It was Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier’s (Kev’s kick-ass partner in crime and producer) original idea to have me come in and design the look of the show. However, when the series was brought to Disney my involvement was slowly but surely fazed out. Seems like the art directors and other people involved in production weren’t interested in working with me. The drawings I’ve seen look a little influenced by my work, but they actually have a look all their own. It’s pretty cartoony stuff but I think it looks pretty cool. I would’ve loved to have worked on the show but i guess Disney just didn’t want me involved after all. That’s cool ,though, cause now when it comes to me developing my own animated stuff one day it’ll all be me, ya know? I’ll design the look of the show, do the character and background designs, etc. etc. So life goes on and there’s obviously no hard feeloings between Kevin, Scott and I. These guys are the shit and they continue to hook me up with fat gigs, like the Talk magazine thing. Speaking of that, the first comic appears in the third issue (November). check it out if ya can.

Teen People…

  • Teen People Magazine caught up with a fairly old interview which took places in Cannes. They asked Ben Affleck and Salma Hayek a few questions about Dogma. Surprisingly, things got a little deep when they were asked about the film’s themes! Here’s what they had to say:
Dogma Duo
——————-
At the Cannes Film Festival, Dogma stars Ben Affleck and Salma Hayek gave TEEN PEOPLE the lowdown on their heavenly new flick.

TEEN PEOPLE: Two fallen angels find a loophole in God’s plan. Alanis Morissette plays God, and Clerks sidekicks Jay and Silent Bob play prophets – it’s no surprise there’s some uproar over your flick! What do you think of the charges of blasphemy?

BEN AFFLECK: You’d have to have the sense of humor of the Ayatolah to take this movie all that seriously. It’s clearly farcical, clearly warm-hearted.

TEEN PEOPLE: Salma, were you worried about how your native Mexico – traditionally considered to be a very religious country – might receive the film?

SALMA HAYEK: The new generations are very different, not the stereotype of what people normally think of Mexico. I cannot do or not do a film because of what Mexico might think.

BEN AFFLECK: See, that’s why I love her.

TEEN PEOPLE: So then, why did you decide to make Dogma?

BEN AFFLECK: It’s nice to be in a movie that feels like it has substance, when so many movies are so homogeneous. It raises the issue of personal responsibility and accountability – who’s responsible for our actions? It’s one of those things that there aren’t really answers to, there are only ruminations on the subject.

SALMA HAYEK: We’ve been on this planet for two thousand years. We still can’t figure out what we’re doing here, what is the purpose of this whole adventure and who put us here in the first place. Dogma has so many philosophical ideas, it can make people think. I don’t think this movie is going to change anybody’s perspective of the world – movies shouldn’t do that anyhow!

Mumford Pics…

  • Those “Mumford” pics from the press kit that we talked about a while back are now available…As always, click the thumbs above for some larger, nicer scans. Lee always does a fantastic job, and his characters are quite endearing. We’re sure that “Mumford” will be no exception.
  • It’s a holiday weekend here in the states (Labor Day) so I’ll be heading home for some family stuff — It shouldn’t be too noticeable except for some slow e-mail responses. We hope to be back with another update Sunday evening to catch up on the weekend’s events, unless a major story breaks before I leave town, in which case we’ll post a special update. ‘Til then…

Entertainment Tonight To Show Dogma Trailer!

September 3rd, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Aug

  • Well, we’d heard a rumor on this earlier this morning but were trying to confirm it…Now it looks like Kevin’s done that for us! The new official Dogma trailer will indeed premiere this MONDAY on ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT!!! There was an attempt to rush the trailer out for this weekend, but it looks like now it’ll go wide NEXT weekend. Expect the one sheet about a week after that, too. Here’s Kevin:
Tonight, on ‘Entertainment Tonight’, you’ll be teased (or threatened, depending on your take on View Askew) with an announcement that on MONDAY’S ‘Entertainment Tonight’, they’ll be first-looking the ‘Dogma’ trailer. It will not be in theatres this weekend, sorry to say; but you will be able to see it Monday night. That’s something, right?

So again – Monday night, ‘Entertainment Tonight’, preview of the ‘Dogma’ trailer. All interested should tune in.

Sounds great! Don’t miss Entertainment Tonight this Monday! For those of you that haven’t been to an appearance or a View Askew event, this may be your first look at a trailer for the film. We’ll be tuning in, you can count on that.

  • The Toronto Film Festival’s got a neat little Dogma page up for the flick…It DOES have a pretty detailed plotdescription, no MAJOR spoilers, but enough to upset some folks who want to go in cold…So, surf over and check out their page, but at your own risk!
  • It doesn’t seem that TNT Roughcut’s got that much faith in Dogma’s Oscar potential. Here’s their prognosis:
Dogma (Nov. 12)

Rumors abound that Kevin Smith’s new one is a great religious satire. Rumorsalso abound that Jay and Silent Bob are main characters. These two rumorsdon’t jibe. (Hey Kevin, put those tired, pathetic characters to restalready!) Boasting an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Matt Damon,Chris Rock, Janeane Garofalo and Alanis Morissette as God, this one justmight have enough star power and semi-witty one-liners, which havehistorically been enough to carry this one-trick pony without a clue aboutdirection, to make it worthy. But we think not.

Genre: Good question. Out-there comedy

Prediction: Bleak

Oscar® buzz: A controversial religious comedy. Uh… No.

  • Movies For Men at IGN is running another story on Dogma, this time using the Toronto Con’s events as the backdrop. Kevingets a lot of press at this place, he must have some fans there! Here ya go:
Kevin Smith gives Toronto talk about God and Green Lantern. September 1, 1999

Kevin Smith gave a sermon about long-awaited Dogma at last weekend’s Torontocomic expo. Coming Attractions reports that Smith confirmed a November 12release date, denied Alanis Morissette plays God, and called down fire andbrimstone on Catholic League president William Donahue for trying to ban afilm he’s never seen.

A departure from his rawly funny oeuvre, Kev dips into the serious end ofthe holy water pool with this edgy morality tale of renegade angels Loki(Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) igniting the apocalypse in theirattempt to re-enter heaven. Comic touches are provided by Chris Rock as thethirteenth apostle, and “Just Say Yes” poster children Jay and Silent Bob. Dogma’s duality was reflected in the two trailers Smith showed: one minuteangel of death Damon is murdering an adulterer, the next Jay is trying toget The Last Seduction’s Linda Fiorentino into bed (or against a fence, ordamn near anywhere). Declining to name the film’s distributor, Smith did saythat the film was edited down to two hours because earlier cuts were justtoo long.

Power Ring Report: Smith also told fans that he’ll be starting a script fora new Green Lantern flick in the next few months. In the past Smith has saidthat he’d focus on Hal Jordan if he ever did a GL film (although hisultimate fave is a Green Arrow pic). Maybe we’ll see a GL/GA team-up? Butplease, Kev — no boxing glove arrows, okay?

The news about Green Lantern is a new one on us…We’re not sure how official that really is or what to make of it at thispoint. As for all the God talk…We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. Wait for the flick!

  • Well, looks like Catholic League dude William Donohue doesn’t like “Stigmata” too much, either…At least he’s giving Dogma a break! Wonder if he saw this one before calling it a bomb, too?
“MGM risks attenuating its prestige by backing such an outlandishly gory and insidious film as ‘Stigmata.’ The idea that salvation can best be achieved by rejecting the Catholic Church is an old and very tired idea. The good news is that there exists a small audience for such an exploitative film, and all the hype and technical effects in the world can do nothing to redeem this bomb of a movie.”
  • We’ve added a new Jay & Silent Bob Skin for WinAMP…And it’s a lot nicer looking than the other one we’ve got! Itcomes complete with equalizer, playlist, and more…Play those MP3’s in style!
  • There’s a HUGE 2-page spread of all the Dogma & View Askew swag you can dream of in the latest edition of PREVIEWS. Wehear there’s an amazingly cool array of swag to be had soon, but don’t have a scan just yet. We’ll post it as soon as weget one.
  • “Mallrats” references abound! In the latest Nintendo 64 Duke Nuke’Em game, Zero Hour, some of the background city shops are called Popular Girl and Fashionable Male. Some clever programmers out there…

  • Howdy everyone…Some perty cool news today regarding the highly anticipated arrival of the Dogma trailer and one-sheet. Be sure and check back with our Toronto page, since we’ve added a couple shots of Kevin at Planet Hollywood and possibly another summary or two that you missed. That, newsbites, and a couple other tidbits make up this Thursday edition of News Askew. It’s a HUGE update, and took a long time to assemble, so our apologies for being a bit brief in some sections…It’s been a crazy busy week!

Dogma Trailer Wide Next Weekend?

September 2nd, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Dan Glennon

  • We haven’t had a chance to check on this one yet, but we hear it’s possible that the rumored distributor of Dogma’s planning to roll out their trailer for the flick to New York and Los Angeles THIS WEEKEND! Reasons we kinda doubt this one is because no official distribution announcement has been made, and obviously the trailer would need to reveal that information. We do hear that the trailers are so fresh that the film’s still drying on them, so it looks more likely that we’ll see a nationwide push with the trailer starting NEXT weekend, with the recently completed one-sheet to follow. Anyway, rest assured that Dogma’s being worked on day and night to make that proposed Novemember 12th release date, and that promotional materials (as well as a distribution announcement) will probably start to appear next week.

  • Whew…Things were quiet this morning and then…BAM! Explosion! Actually, the bulk of our news today revolves around a couple of posts made by Kevin and Malcolm about the Toronto screening. Looks like it’s gonna be a tough one to find your way into, so it’d probably be best to heed their advice and just wait an extra month for the screening. It looks like I’m not going to be that smart, though. Let’s get started!
