What’s Up With Green Arrow?

July 27th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Sean, Dizza & Toby

  • Todays edition of the news at Another Universe updates us on the Green Arrow situation. The entire saga, along with all the misconceptions about the status, are all explained in detail here, along with a sunny outlook for the book — As Kevin stated earlier, he was definitely still interested in doing the books and hoped to get to it sometime this Winter.
Smith’s Green Arrow Aims For Future
Interview with G.A. Editor Darren Vincenzo

by Matt Brady
Toss out the name Green Arrow to a room of DC fans, and you’ll getalmost the same amount of fighting if you said ‘Hal Jordan.’ However, thebulk of Green Arrow fans are unified in their purpose – they want to see thecharacter return, be it as Conner Hawke or Conner’s father, the originalGreen Arrow, Oliver Queen, whose body has never been found – a sure signhe’s still alive somewhere in the DCU.

Since Kevin Smith told Entertainment Weekly that he would be writingGreen Arrow for DC late last year, Green Arrow fans have waited inanticipation.

And waited.

And waited.

The only news regarding Smith’s Green Arrow future was the statementSmith made earlier this year, saying that his artistic collaborators onDaredevil, Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti would be joining him for his run.Shortly after Smith’s statement, Quesada and Palmiotti re-upped with MarvelKnights, a move that will keep them busy for another year, minimum. It’s afact that hasn’t sat well with Green Arrow fans. If you were at WizardWorld, you most likely saw the ‘Free Green Arrow’ fliers being circulated duringthe DC panels, demanding the return of Oliver Queen by 2000.

The fans aren’t alone in their desire. “I’m glad they care so much,”Green Arrow editor Darren Vincenzo says. “I’ve loved Green Arrow as wellsince before I was in comics, and its nice to see that there are fans whoare still so attached to the character that they’ll circulate a petition orflyers to get things rolling. That’s cool.”

Vincenzo recently sat down with AnotherUniverse.com’s Mania for a fewminutes to help clarifying a few points and misconceptions that have sprungup recently around Green Arrow.

Misconception 1: Green Arrow is not lying in limbo while Smith goes onwith business until some day when he has time to write a series. “Theofficial situation is that we’re in discussions with a writer for thecharacter of Green Arrow, and that writer is Kevin Smith,” Vincenzo says.”Kevin and I have sat down on more than one occasion, and figured out wherewe can go with the character and the book. We’re not ‘holding’ it until hedecides he wants to do something. We’ve sat down and discussed plans as wewould with any writer.”

The second misconception Vincenzo sought to clear up goes hand in handwith the idea that DC is ‘holding’ a character for Smith – the sloth-likepace at which progress has been made on a Smith-written Green Arrow seriesor limited series. “We’re working to step up the procedure and get thingsrolling along faster than they have been,” Vincenzo says. “We’re doing thebest we can and as of right now, we are stepping up the speed as best wecan. We’re further along this month than last, and further along than twomonths ago. We’re very interested in having Kevin involved, so we’d reallylike to see this work out with Kevin.”

Vincenzo also explained that due to DC’s eagerness to get Green Arrowrolling again in the near future, Smith’s artistic dream team may not be onthe book with him. “It is likely that the time frame will not allow theinvolvement of some of the names that have been linked to the character,”Vincenzo says. “While I wasn’t at Chicago, Kevin spoke with people at DC inmy stead, so we are moving things ahead as bets we can.”

Whenever the Smith-helmed Green Arrow does see the light of day, don’texpect three months between issues a la Daredevil. “Ideally, you want to gointo a situation or project without the chance of those things developing,”Vincenzo says. “At DC, we go into any project armed as best we can so thosesituations don’t arise. If that means requesting the writer to writeeverything ahead of time, and not scheduling it until its written, thenthat’s what that means. If it means fill-ins to keep the book monthly, that’s what it means as well.”

“The best thing I can say is look at our track record – on the whole, wedon’t have a lot of books that ship late, or creators walking all over us.We make contracts with people and do everything we can to make sure the workgets done on time. That would be the plan that we approach Green Arrowwith.” While Vincenzo didn’t mention it – it’s a no-brainer that in today’smarket, Smith’s name equals guaranteed sales, thanks in part to hiscommercial success with Daredevil. With belts being tightened across theboard, DC most likely isn’t anxious to launch a Green Arrow series with awriter in the interim that would bring in less than Smith-level salesnumbers.

Pure speculation time – if a writer other than Smith was to tackle GreenArrow, it would probably be in the context of a prelude, leading to Smith’srun with the character. A Green Arrow prelude would more than likely see itsorigin in DC’s best selling title, JLA, where it would assumedly attract asubstantial number of readers to follow it through to the new series or aprologue series before Smith’s run.

“Myself, Kevin and DC all want to see Green Arrow return,” Vincenzosays. “As I’ve said, things are moving along faster than before, so itsgetting to be a safer bet that Green Arrow will be back before long.”

  • Chris Rock appears in the September Playboy magazine in an extended interview. The article mostly includes thoughts on his career and his new HBO special. After about 5 pages of the article, it goes into talking about “Dogma”. Here’s atranscript:
Playboy: You’re in Kevin Smith’s newest film, Dogma, as Rufus, the 13th apostle. The movie’s subject matter-a critique of Catholicism-has caused a fair amount of controversy. Is that what attracted you to the project?

Rock: Kevin’s other movies, Clerks and Chasing Amy, just spoke to me.

Playboy: What was it like working with Smith?

Rock: Kevn holds the most intense rehearsals. When you get to the set, your lines and blocking have to be second nature. You’re prepared. You’re in shape. It takes hours-morning till night. I wanted to do it, especially since I’m not an actor like the other people in the movie: Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Linda Fiorentino, Alan Rickman, Salma Hayek. I need the extra work and it was like free acting school. It’s definitely the best work I’ve done. It broke me out of all my movies.

  • Movie buzz site extraordinaire Dark Horizons posted links to the trailer for Jason Lee’s next flick, “Mumford”, which isdue in theaters this fall. Garth says, “One of the quieter fall releases is this light-hearted comedy about a psychologist(Loren Dean) who moves to a small town where his advice sparks romance among the locals in the community. The film also includes a stellar supporting cast with talent like Martin Short, Alfre Woodard, Ted Danson, Jason Lee and David Paymer.”

  • Movie rumor sites are now linking none other than Matt Damon to the Tom Cruise/Steven Spielberg summer 2000 vehicle,“Minority Report”. This rumor’s been circulating for a while now, but now that Daily Variety picked it up, it’s got new life.No official deal’s been inked at this point.
  • SILENT BOB gets some kudos in an article entitled “Here Today, Goon Tomorrow” in the UK’s Total Film Magazine. We supposeyou can figure out the subject matter for yourself…
Silent Bob
Mallrats

Granted, Jay is not really supervillain material. His personality, based on a lifetime’s intake of Ice Cube lyrics and porn movies, doesn’t quite give him the sophistication required for the job. Still, Silent Bob,(Kevin Smith), the muscle of Jay’s drug-dealing operation, is the henchman we’d all dream of owning. He doesn’t answer back, he gets Jay out of scrapes with astonishing gadget wielding panache, and whenhe does bother to speak, he comes through with gobbets of Yoda-esque wisdom. And, should anyonedare give you or your homies shit, he’ll bitch-slap their sorry ass, Wolvie-berserk style.

  • Finally for this lovely Tuesday evening…Has everyone taken notice to the amazing run that The Blair Witch Project is going on in theaters? Wow! It’ll be interesting to see what happens with a larger release, as well as the inevitable imitations but, like Clerks, we think this film is going to forever be a milestone in Independent filmmaking history. Onthat note, The Clerks Witch Project comes to us. “Two convenience store workers disappear in the woods around New Jersey. A year later their footage is found”. Wonder ifthat guy from the alternate Clerks ending had anything to do with this?

  • IGN, who seem to really be doing a TON of View Askew stuff lately, have psoted a new interview with Kevin. Looks like this one’s got more of a comics flair to it, so if you’re looking for the man’s insights on the books he’s done and has lined up for the future, this is the place to be.

IGN Also lists Clerks as their #10 Guy movie, by the way:

10. Clerks
This Kevin Smith movie has it all: oral sex references, hermaphroditic porn, roller hockey on the roof, and best of all: Jay and Silent Bob.

  • Sometimes View Askew references show up in the strangest places…In the Star Wars cards for Decipher’s Ender expansion, the “Elite Squadron Stormtrooper” card reads: “Commander Igar selected the Empire’s most dedicated stormtroopers to guard Endor for the Emperor. All they know is killing and white uniforms.” Perhaps Kevin needs to demand some royalties?
  • Finally today, congratulations to Vincent Guastini, the makeup effects guy on Dogma — He was just nominated for an Emmy for his work on Saturday Night Live! Good luck at the big show!

  • Howdy folks…Sunday update for ya. As predicted, things have calmed down considerably, and we’re using this time to begin the move of files over to the new server. We’ll let you know when it’s complete just in case you experience any weirdness when we flick the switch – The move may not take place until the end of this week though.

A new poll’s been added, thanks to Renee. Last week, it was a CLOSE race — While a great deal of you checked in saying that while you weren’t DD readers before, Kev’s great story along with J&J’s superior artwork have gotten ya hooked. A slightly LARGER number of you said you didn’t read the book, though — All we can say to that is, “WHY NOT”? You’re missing some great stuff.

Clerks DVD Postponed…

  • It’s a great day in the Askew realm! Not only is it Friday (thank goodness…I need a beer or two or three…) but Kevin’s just come off a fantastic appearance on the Howard Stern show (details below) PLUS we’ve even got some cool news from the DVD realm that may answer the question so many of you have been asking: Where’s Chasing Amy?

By the way, a TON of you e-mailed us about the AICN story on Dogma’s distributor today — Keep in mind that this is all still speculation on that site as well as our site’s part. We’re 99% sure the distributor is Lion’s Gate, it’s been the only name mentioned at all over the past month or so. But Kevin, View Askew, and Lion’s Gate have yet to make any official (or even UNofficial) announcement on the subject. Kevin HAS confirmed there indeed IS a distributor, and that the film will hit U.S. theaters the second week of October (we guess OCTOBER 15th), in its current 2 hour version. When the OFFICIAL announcement gets made, we’ll be sure and let you know right away.

Alright, let’s get on with our Friday update…

Kev Does Stern…

  • Kevin appeared on Howard Stern’s morning radio show this morning, from around 7:45 AM until 8:30. The appearance was full of great stuff, including the famous Jon Peters story (explaining the troubles with the Superman script) as well as, for the first time we’d heard (other than his post), all the dirt on Chevy Chase and what happened with Fletch 3. Kev plugged Dogma (saying again that the film will be out the second week of October – We’re guessing OCTOBER 15th), DareDevil, & The Stash, as he gave Howard a very cool-sounding DD statue and the Jay & Silent Bob figures.

Our local Stern radio station’s (105.7 THE X) power source is a hamster on a wheel, so we basically get crappy reception even though we’re about 15 minutes from the transmitter…Regardless of that, the broadcast is still quite listenable at RealAudio Quality – We were able to clean it up pretty good. We’ve broken the appearance (approximately 45 mintues total) into 2 segments: The “Mike Walker Game” segment where Kev plays along and tries to guess the false story from the National Enquirer’s editor, and the actual interview segment. Enjoy!

Buena Vista, Miramax Announce Better DVD Support..

July 23rd, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Grendel, Dale Glandfield, Brian Hendrix, Simon, William Henderson & Justin McGill

  • Now THIS is the story we’ve been waiting MONTHS for! In a nutshell, the Disney machine (inlcuding Miramax, Buena Vista, & Dimension) have finally broken their code of non-anamorphic (16:9) DVDs. As a widescreen TV owner, I couldn’t be happier! Shakespeare In Love will be the studio’s very first anamorphic DVD, streeting next month in a standard edition, with a Special Edition somewhere down the road.

In addition to THIS news, they also announce that they’re working on a Chasing Amy Special Edition! Yes!!! Could this mean we’ll see all that great SE material from the Criterion disc, maybe even MORE, AND a 16:9 transfer for Amy??? We sure as hell hope so! In a recent interview, Kevin himself was quoted as saying that Buena Vista were attempting to buy the rights to the Criterion disc to put out their own version of Amy (Since Criterion wanted to release the disc as-is, with no widescreen enhacement or additional features).

At any rate, here’s the full story, courtesy of The Digital Bits:

THE WHOLE STORY: We’ve got some great news for you, disc-fans! The Bits has been able to officially confirm some very exciting news: Buena Vista Home Entertainment has finally relented, and is allowing Miramax to release its first DVD title in anamorphic widescreen! And that first anamorphic title will be none other than the most recent Best Picture winner – Shakespeare in Love! The disc, which streets on August 10th, will be a fairly basic movie-only edition, but WILL be enhanced for widescreen TVs. Miramax has assured me that a special edition DVD version of the film is also in the works, but was delayed due to legal issues (a problem that has delayed many special edition titles, not just from Buena Vista and Miramax).

Miramax has further informed me that they plan to push vigorously for anamorphic widescreen on future titles, and that they would like to start supporting DTS on some future releases as well (particularly their Dimension horror line). Other special edition DVDs that they currently have in the works, are Life is Beautiful (which will include a half-hour special on director Roberto Benigni, as well as both the English dubbed and original Italian audio tracks), From Dusk Til Dawn (with a making-of documentary), Switchblade Sisters, Il Postino, Chasing Amy, and Scream 2. Down the line, other titles that will likely receive special edition treatment, are Scream 3, Killing Mrs. Tingle (likely with a Kevin Williamson commentary track), and eventually The English Patient. Their Halloween H20: SE has finally been rescheduled for 9/28.

I’m told that the biggest constraints on Miramax doing special editions faster on DVD, are all of the myriad of legal rights issues that arise over special edition material (which is becoming more of a problem as the format gains popularity), and just the sheer amount of work that is involved in pulling everything together. But rest assured – they are adding staffers, and plan to start really doing lots of great special edition DVDs as soon as they can. As for their recent She’s All That DVD, which was mistakenly released with only Dolby Digital 2.0 audio, the disc is now being repressed by Buena Vista with the correct Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. Anyone who purchased it should return it to the store where they bought it. You will be able to exchange them for the corrected discs, as soon as they are ready, and are sent to retailers. We will post information on how to spot the corrected discs, and when they will be available, as soon as the details are finalized.

2 OUSTANDING Kev Interviews Online…

  • We’ve read some good interviews with Kevin in the past, but we’ve got 2 for you today that take the cake. After the Mallrats signing, John Couture got on the phone with Kev to discuss everything from the Mallrats DVD, to comics, to the web, to Dogma. Not only is this a very well-written and structured piece, but it’s laid out beautifully on the web with lots of photos from the flicks and the set itself. You really gotta surf over here and read this.

Also of interest today, DVD.COM has done an interview with Kevin covering the recent release of the Mallrats DVD, among other things. Like John’s piece, this again is the way to do an interview folks — Ask all the questions that fans want to know. You’ll read about Kevin’s love as laserdisc as he grew up, devotion to DVD due to all the “extras” it allows on home releases, the impending Chasing Amy DVD, as well as his plans for the Dogma DVD (Which we predict will set the all-time record for the MOST extra material ever packed onto a home video release).

If you’re as close a follower as we are, a lot of the stuff in thse 2 interviews may not be new to you, but the beautiful layout and great Q&A make them totally worth your while. We’re going to work on getting permission to keep a local copy of these pieces for posterity, but for now, surf over and check them BOTH out.
