  • The Clerks Animated series recordings continue to go well, from what we hear! Jay, Brian, & Jeff are all out on thewest coast lending their voices to the script, which is (from what we’ve heard) quite good and being enjoyed by them all.We can’t wait to get a first look at some of the animation or panels! Hopefully, we can share with you folks, as well.
  • Joe Quesada (wearing a Daredevil “Marvel Knights” shirt) and Jimmy Palmiotti showed up in the lastest issue of Transmetropolitan at the election party, in the same panel as Warren Ellis himself. A nice little nod the the Daredevil folks. Kevin wasn’t in the frame, but may have be hiding in there as well.
  • The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (www.cbldf.org) is releasing a book with a super cool Jay & Silent Bob cover done bythe great Matt Wagner, sponsoring their fund which defends first amendment rights in the comic book industry:

  • Kevin’s sometimes referenced (and ever beloved) “Degrassi Jr. High/ Degrassi High” series are coming to VHS:
Degrassi Junior High/ Degrassi High

(WGBH Boston, unrated, 3 vols. each, $39.95 on tape, June 22)

The gawky charm of this Canadian series may seem odd next to today’s ultrahip teen soaps. But the emotionally honest depictions are welcome, as are the stellar acting and lack of moral patronizing.

  • And finally today, the Siskel & Ebert site’s posted RealAudio of the story on Cannes & Dogma. You can listen to it at their website.

Beware The Evils Of Dogma! Yeah Right…

June 9th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Mark Howard

  • Just for amusement, we thought you’d appreciate MORE of that propaganda crap that they’re spreading to try and stop the evilness that IS Dogma. Guess their pockets are getting empty again so it’s time to use the entertainment industry to try and collect money from the unsuspecting public. Maybe once Dogma finally gets released this can all stop, and they can find something new to blame for the downfall of society. We’d at least cut these folks some slack if they’d SEEN the film that they’re so gung-ho about picketing.

Kev & Ben Enjoy The MTV Awards…And Each Other!

June 8th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Rugmuncher, Joe Eversole, & Justin McGill

  • If you don’t want the appearance SPOILED, don’t read any further, skip to the next story, but many of you have written in after witnessing Kevin & Ben making the highlight reel of MTV‘s upcoming movie awards (which were taped a few days ago, but actually air on MTV Thursday night). By the way, new Real World casting special tonight, whoo-hoo!
Kevin appeared in a Jay & Silent Bob shirt with a pull over sweatshirt. To paraphrase: Kevin “.. So I’m thinking.. what can a guy like me do in 1999 to make people notice me…”

Ben: “Oh well why didn’t you just say so…”

And with that, Ben gives Kev a full on the mouth kiss for about 5 seconds! Yikes!

Maybe he just did it to see what we said about it on News Askew. Hmmm. For the first time, we’re speechless. Wonder if Jen got jealous? Or maybe Gwyneth? Heh. Anyway, sounds like it’s gonna be a wild show! We’ll be tuning in, then trying to catch a late night showing of Austin Powers!

During Thanksgiving break, with Joe at home with his family, Shayna and Andrew connect after a night of partying and end up sleeping together. Upon Joe’s return, Andrew must decide what’s more important, his friendship with Joe or his growing feelings for Shayna. “Love 101” will leave you remembering what it was like to be in college, where romance was just as important as your GPA.

NewsDay Defends Dogma…

June 7th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • This piece appeared in Newsday’s “Fanfare” section, and it’s one of our faves of late, so we thought we’d share it, in
its entirety, on the front page for ya today:
ON MOVIES / This Defender Of the Faith Won’t Clam Up

John Anderson

IMAGINE NEWTON and his apple. Proust and his Madeleine. Kane and his
Rosebud. Now, imagine naked picnics and clam chowder.

It was spring. We were fortunate enough to be in Paris, inside the
Musee d’Orsay and confronted by Edouard Manet’s “Luncheon on the
Grass” – a painting that caused near riots in 1863 because its
elements include two fully dressed men and a female companion who’s
dining toute nude.

In a museum full of wonderful art, this was a highlight. But
testifying to the ultimate roundness of things, our beloved companions
(not coincidentally female) provided the defining – and definingly
’90s – critique of one of the pivotal works of the impressionist
movement: “Why is the woman the only one naked?”

Forget the fact that Manet was demolishing artistic assumptions
about subject, composition and perception. Never mind that it’s that
woman in the picture – the one with the challenging stare and the
“who-cares” nudity – who possesses all the power of the painting.
Never mind that it remains an alarming, revolutionary work nearly 140
years after Manet made it. The politicization of seeing was rearing its
ugly head.

Chapter Two. It was summer. We were fortunate enough to be on
Montauk Highway, confronted by a bowl of Manhattan chowder and a
quandary: No clams. Not a bivalve in the bowl. I peered. I spooned. I
swirled. I considered cheesecloth. I considered chemical analysis. But
all my succulent mollusks apparently had been given the Memorial Day
Weekend off.

But what of it? Does a clam really make a clam chowder? If the
broth is potent and well-intentioned – if the essence of clam, in
other words, is possessed by the soup – do we have a moral legitimacy
in demanding actual clam in our chowder?

You’re darn right we do. Clamlessness may not be evil, of course. But
it doesn’t constitute chowderhood, either.

They also showed quite a few pics of Kev at the Dogma party w/ Affleck and Linda. Send us tape if you’ve got it. Also, rumor has it the Indepdendent Film Channel has been running some Dogma clips! If anyone got these on tape, please drop us a line.
  • Finally today, Jason Lee made the recent Cosmo issue in a small blurb. The photo’s above, and here’s the text:

  • Finally today, what we think is a great quote from John Pierson about the films at Cannes:
“In a festival year when you get ‘The Blair Witch Project’, ‘Summer of Sam’ and ‘Dogma’ playing in the same festival on consecutive days, how could anybody possibly complain? You may not like them but they are indisputable original.”

Commentary

June 6th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • It’s been one of the slowest weekends on record for news, and frankly, it’s a welcome break for us! Maybe everyone’s outside enjoying the beautiful weather, or stuck inside watching the Real World marathon on MTV…Or going to see Star Wars for the 11th time…Or maybe there’s just not much going on!

A few follow-up things…I finally got a Darth Maul bank, so the search can end! Got it for a fair enough price, though I had to ruin all 3 banks collectible factors by opening them to watch them fight each other. Man, is that ever COOL! Probably the neatest Star Wars toys I’ve ever seen. Way cool stuff. Thanks to all who helped with the search.

Also, thanks for all your mails concerning video capture cards and info yesterday. We went with an economical ATI All In Wonder Pro. While we don’t need a new video card, its capturing capabilities should fit nicely with what we’re looking for with the website. We’ll keep you posted, the card’s in the mail as we speak.

Anyway, here’s what’s happening:
