  • In the May 10th issue of People Weekly, Ben Affleck‘s listed as one of the 50 Most Beatiful People. Kev’s comments were used in the little blurb they printed:
BEN AFFLECK
Actor
With rumpled allure and a wicked sense of humor (“He’s one of the few people who can make me blush,” says his Forces of Nature costar Sandra Bullock), Ben Affleck is, in Armageddon producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s words, “a unique combination of all-American kid and sexy bad boy.” he’s also way casual about appearances. While others gush over everything from his smile (It’s mischievous,” says Chasing Amy’s Joey Lauren Adams) to the Native American tattoo on his shoulder (“So beautiful,” says Forces costar Meredith Scott Lynn), Affelck himself “will walk past a reflective surface, take a glance and move on,” says Kevin Smith, who directed him in 1997’s Chasing Amy and the forthcoming, controversial Dogma.

But the Cambridge, Mass.-bred Affleck did fine-tune his act by the time he began work on last summer’s megahit Armageddon. For the role of space hero, the film’s producers had him slim down, pump up the pecs on his 6’2″ frame and get his teeth capped. recalls Smith: “When I saw him in the dailies for [1997’s] Going All the Way, I said, ‘Oh my God, youare a movie star!’ He was just cut and built, and he had matinee-idol looks.” The effect apparently isn’t lost on the 26-year old actor, who has remained unattached since his January breakup with Gwyneeth Paltrow. Though Affleck vowed to return to his burgers-and-beer regimen after filming…well some promises are better not kept. “That dude’s Diet Coke all the way,” says Smith.

  • In the recent edition of Startime, a supplement to the Fort Worth StarTelegram that talks about entertainment in the metroplex, there is a article on George Carlin. It talks about him stopping by for his comedy tour and at the end of the article it says ” His most recent HBO special, You Are All Diseased, was well recieved and his next big film appearance will be with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in the Kevin Smith movie Dogma, due out this summer.” Nice to see that Dogma news is spreading along with Carlin’s excellent public appearances.

Commentary…

  • Many of you have been wondering where we’ve been, no doubt. Well, let’s just say it’s been a very hectic couple of days. I’ll explain more in a day or two. In the meantime, we’ve got a TON of news today…Lots of great stuff, too. Oh, and expect a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT regarding the one millionth hit in a few days.

Clerks DVD, Trimark, & Dogma…

May 1st, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by VideoGuru

  • Our resident industry scooper checked in with some reliable information on a few topics of interest, at least, what he overheard as his ear strayed over neighboring cubicles. Here’s the details:
  • Straight from the e-mail of the head lady of all things DVD at Disney: Clerks will be released on DVD this summer although not on the June 29th date as previously thought. It also will not be altered from the current status (which we assume means commentary and everything else fully intact). Laserviews has an update today than confirms the content as well.
  • Trimark has expressed interest in releasing the Clerks DVD. Trimark is known for doing a fantastic job releasing stuff that’s not their own (like the LOADED Natural Born Killers release a couple years back). In the meantime, the studio has also stated that they’re packing up and heading to Cannes with ONE goal in mind: Land DOGMA.
  • There have been whispers about a December release from Amazon.Com as well as rumors that Disney will release the disc without commentary. From what we know, these are both false. Amazon is just using December 31, 1999 as a way to postpone the DVD until they get a new release date.

We’ll keep ya posted…

  • We’ve got a date for Dogma at Cannes! The film is going to be presented at Cannes on May 21st at 00:15 in the Auditorium Lumière (source: Dogma’s “attachèes de press” in Paris). The problem is that you’ll need an accreditation to enter! Good luck, folks…

  • We finally managed to pick up a copy of the latest Wizard and scanned in all the pics from the Stash for ya. We WILL warn you, though, there are SPOILERS in these pics, since pretty much every Dogma-related prop in the store has been snapped and scanned in. It won’t ruin the flick, but if you’re paranoid, stay away. Otherwise, enjoy the scans!

DareDevil #1/2 Details…

May 1st, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • A slight correction/change from yesterday: DareDevil #1/2 is NOT being offered in Wizard, but rather, is announced in this month’s Previews. Sorry for the confusion. We’ll look into details on this issue and have more as soon as we can uncover it. My comic shop guy tells me that the issue will only be made available to those who purchased previews, one a one-for-one basis:
“Wow Daredevil #1/2 book offer from Marvel Comics writen by series writer Kevin Smith and featuring cover art and sketches by Joe Quesada & Jimmy Palmiotti!”

  • Mallrats is hitting cable, complete and uncut (unlike that ABC debacle earlier this year), on the cable channel Starz this Tuesday at 2:45. Set those VCRs or tune in if you’re a night owl!
  • Salon Magazine was kind enough to give us a nice plug…Too bad it’s yet AGAIN credited to the View Askew site and NOT the News Askew site! All the same, at least they like us:
ViewAskew.com: Director Kevin Smith (“Clerks,” “Chasing Amy”) has more than made up for inflicting “Mallrats” on an unsuspecting public with a fantastic site that is the first and best destination for his fans. As he puts it, the site gives you “the power of communication, as you can actually interact with the losers who hit it big with their movies of smut and conscience!” Interested in the controversy surrounding Smith’s upcoming Matt Damon-Ben Affleck flick “Dogma”? Click over to the “Dogma: Rumor Control” section, in which the filmmaker gives his take on the brouhaha and offers the curious a bushel of info on the pic. View Askew also offers one of the better collections of celebrity merchandise, including signed editions of the Smith-penned “Daredevil” comic book series and Jay and Silent Bob action figures. And let’s be honest: How many directors would go to the trouble to explain how to play drinking games to their films? Spielberg? Scorsese? Not a chance. The site even gives you the option of printing the rules out in an easy-to-read format, perfect after you’ve had one too many. Finally, a celebrity who cares about the little people.

Okay, so the signed stuff IS View Askew…But drinking games and Dogma RC? Oh well…We’re glad they at least gotnoticed, even if it WAS erroneously! But please, press-type people, realize we are NOT View Askew! Thanks.

  • The current issue of Spin Magazine has a 1 page piece on Ethan Suplee. It covers his past work and he mentions Dogma and how Kevin wrote the shit demon part for him. Ethan mentions that it was taken as a huge compliment. Check the issue for the full story, available now at your local newsstand.
  • The latest IndieWire mentions our story on Kevin’s marriage and gives us a nice plug…Thanks guys!

Clerks DVD Petition: A WIN?!?!?

April 29th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Have we WON!?!?!?! Minutes ago, we (along with TONS of YOU) started receiving a response from Disney on our Clerks DVD petition. Here it is:
Please excuse this bounce-back response.

There is 99% possibility that the CLERKS Collectors Series Edition will be back on the summer schedule; however, the planned June 29th release date will probably not be made.

Look for future announcements as to the date.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who participated in the petition, as well as thank Disney/Buena Vista for their reconsideration and response. If a representative from Disney could be kind enough to contact us directly on details on the release (whether anything will be deleted/changed or everything will remain intact, as well as a proposed release date), we’d love to hear from you…Even if you’d like us to keep it confidential for now. Thanks again, everyone! All of you loyal Clerks fans are the reason that we were able to make this happen. We’ll keep you posted.

Stash Pics & More In Wizard…

April 29th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Sounds like Kevin’s heading back to the comforting east coast of New Jersey! He’s also got some details on what else is up. Read on, folks:
I’ve read the first draft of the ‘Clerks’ pilot (by me and Dave Mandel), and I must say…

It’s pretty fucking funny.

It’s also ninety seven pages, which means there’s a world of cutting ahead of us. Thankfully, it’ll just be a matter of losing good material in favor of the better stuff we’ll keep. Not a bad position to be in, that.

Our work at Skywalker comes to a close, and so I’m outie tonight, bound for home (after three weeks away). The movie sounds phenomenal. Kudos to Gary, Tom, Phil Richard, Shannon, Juan, Shari, Joe, and everyone who smoothed the flick out aurally, and even improved it in places.

Next week, there’s a table-reading on the show out in LA, where Brian and Jeff will climb into their respective roles for the first time in five years. Jay will be there too, but he’s – of course – been down the Jay path since his first outing (hell – he lives it). Should be a good time.

It’s been an eventful trip, to say the least, and I’ll be happy to tread the mother-soil anew.

Gotta carry that bride o’ mine ‘cross the threshold, ya know.

Thanks for giving me something to do during the mix.

Wow. We can hardly wait to see Dogma with the new sound mix, score and FX in place!
