Latest From WonderCon…
- Our scooper Lazlo was kind enough to check in following day one of Kev’s WonderCon gig. Take it away:
Background info: My GF (Angela) and I did the volunteer thing forthe ‘Con. Give the ‘Con a day of your life and get free admitionfor the weekend. From what I understand, the ‘Con folks were reallypleased with the turn out, they were estimating around 1000 peoplecame in the first hour on Saturday and it peaked out around 2800(their estimates). Now onto Kevin’s first appearance:
Got to the Ballroom where Kevin & Co. where doing the Marvel Knightspanel about 15 minutes early and listened to the end of somethingelse (think it was the Batman/Supes animated stuff). Anhoo, when thatwas over I moved my way to the front row, things kicked off about 5minutes later. The panel: Jim, Devin Grayson, Kevin, Joe. They wenton about how things came about, how working together was great. Theytook several questions, one of which was if Kevin ran into any problemswith the religious overtones of DD (considering the crap Dogma’s gettingnow). He said no since Marvel kinda saw how the whole thing was gonnapan out and overall there really weren’t a lot of controversial thingsin there, although they did tell Kevin & Co. that DD couldn’t beat the Black Widow into pulp like he had wanted. He said something aboutthe whole voilence against women thing, but they did still let DD snapthe BW’s leg. When asked how he got into “The Business”, Kevin made yourstandard dick sucking jesture, which became the running joke of thepanel.
They didn’t really discuss any Green Arrow stuff since Jim and Joe aretrying to stay focused on the Knights stuff. As for the future ofthe Knights stuff and Kevin working with them: Kev was originallytapped for 6 issues, this was extended to 8 (old news). But, *IF* the Marvel Knights line is renewed (J&J were pretty sure it would be)then Kevin mentioned something about coming back to writing againsomewhere in the late ‘teen issues (16-18, somewhere in there).
After the Panel, Kevin, Jim, and Joe went to do signing stuff atthe Oni booth (which was pretty large). To avoid the initial rushAng and I went to get lunch then head for the signing line. SinceI had my “volunteer” shirt on I got drafted for crowd control whileI was trying to get in line *grumble*. It worked out great tho’. Iwas the last person to have Kevin sign stuff for (at that sitting).Got a buncha things signed by Kev, Jim, and Joe. Also asked Kevin ifwe were going to get a “sneak peak” tomorrow at the focus on hisfilms, he responded with a rather definate “Yeah”. Someone also askedhim when it was coming out and he sounded rather positive when he replied”October”. So tomorrow we get a peak at Dogma, mere foreplay forthe real thing a full 6 months away.
Also there was Scott Mosier, who, when I caught up with him was givinga film student lotsa info. From what I heard, Dogma was the most tiringproject to date. Since he was used to getting everything done for a flickin 7-8 months and Dogma’s going on for at least a year now, this process ismuch longer than he’s used to. He also commented about the animated seriesin that it was going to be considered “seperate” from the movie stuff so itcould have a life of it’s own and not have to worry about continuity. I askedhim about the much rumored Clerks 2 and if they would try to keep the samelook and feel of the original. He said if and when it ever happens there’sno way they could ever go that cheap again. Since thigns were done that waybecause of a major lack of budget, if there’s a next one, it’d have a muchbetter look to it.
I’ll get ya’ll pics the instant I get them developed and scanned in. I’ve gotat least one of the Panel and a couple shots of Kevin. More will followtomorrow.
Sounds like a good time! We’ll have those pics and more stories from the con as they roll in…
ATTENTION REPORTERS!!!
- Alright, we’ve had it. Seems that lately, we’re discovering TONS of reporters are not only using this page as their news source to write all their Dogma and Kevin Smith related articles, but they’re doing so without giving us ANY credit whatsoever, sometimes due to just pure selfishness, and other times because we’re considered VIEW ASKEW and thus an official source, not the indepdendent fan site that we ACTUALLY are.
Just to set the record straight…News Askew AND Dogma Rumor Control are websites owned and operated by Brad Plevyak and Chris Alley. The disclaimer and the bottom of the page states such. We are in no way owned, operated, or paid by View Askew or Miramax. We’re just fans, we do this for fun, and thus have no official endorsement, support, or guarantee of correctness of information from any of the agencies that we report on. Everything that we do is done without any contact from Kevin Smith or View Askew, and no one to answer to but ourselves, and we plan to keep it that way.
Sorry to sound so blunt, but dammit, we’re sick of it. The whole idea of this site was to give a different source and take on things than the official View Askew website does. We love their site as much as we love our own, but do NOT want to be thought of as part of it, and should not be simply because there’s a link to us over there.
Commentary
- Happy Friday, all. Thanks to all of you that took the time to write in to comment on my job situation, or offer leads and suggestions. It is VERY appreciated. I’ll be placing a link at the top of the page to all the information until I can get myself re-situated, and will keep you all informed on the progress (for those of you that care — If you don’t, well, uh, sorry!). Amidst the job searching today, we were still again able to put together a nice update for ya with tons of little stories and tidbits that have been popping up across the land.
Many of you have already e-mailed us about the Entertainment Weekly story (see below). We were actually contacted and chatted with for a few minutes earlier this week about the Dogma situation, and were happy to do so, though were a bit saddened not to see a link or mention of News Askew or Dogma RC by name in the story. The quote was a bit taken out of context, too, but hey, that’s journalism, right? Oh well, there’s always next time.
Alright, then, let’s get on with the news today…

E-Weekly Article & Quote Info…
Earlier this week, we were contacted by Jessica and chatted on the phone a while about the goings-on with Dogma and basically took the time to answer some questions regarding what we knew about the sale and the film as a whole. The quote comes as a result of a dialogue that that she and I got into about what Kevin had said regarding the MoobyBoardroom scene at his Rider Appearance, though I thought it was a bit strange how I was quoted by paraphrasing something that Kevin actually said (without recalling his exact words, of course), and that it could be easily takenout of context. Oh well. The story itself summarizes everything you’ve read about here over the past week or so, andreads:
- A Hollywood Dogfight (News + Notes Sidebar)
It’s tempting to say Disney was being dogmatic about the situation. Butyou decide: On April 7, Miramax cochairmen Harvey and Bob Weinstein putup $12 million of their own money to buy all the rights to Kevin Smith’supcoming religious comedy, Dogma. The unusual move was made becauseDisney, Miramax’s parent company, is uncomfortable with the film’scontroversial content, which includes a descendant of Jesus working atan abortion clinic and a discussion of Joseph and Mary’s sex life. TheWeinsteins will now look to sell the film to another distributor.”Disney is an easy target for this kind of protest,” says Harvey. “It’stheir Achilles’ heel.”
This isn’t the first time the odd-fitting Disney-Miramax tandem has hadproblems. In 1995, the companies were blasted by Catholic groups overMiramax’s Priest, about a gay Catholic clergyman. The following year, the Weinsteins were forced to set up an ad hoc company, ShiningExcalibur, to release the NC-17-rated Kids (Disney rules prohibit any ofits divisions from releasing NC-17 films). However, Dogma seemsdifferent. Not only will the film not have a ratings problem, it’s ahighly marketable comedy from a respected indie director (Smith made1997’s hit Chasing Amy for Miramax). And it boasts a boatful of hotyoung stars, including Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Alanis Morissette, LindaFiorentino, and Chris Rock. And as Weinstein points out: “This is notPriest. This is a laugh-out-loud satire. Look at There’s Something AboutMary. Was the hair-gel scene funny or offensive?”
So what’s the problem? Although Smith was unavailable for comment, people close to him say he attributes at least part of Disney’sskittishness to a scene in which Damon and Affleck, playing angels, walkinto the board meeting of a Disney-like firm and rattle off lewdpersonal histories of the execs as cartoon music plays in thebackground. Says Brad Plevyak, who coruns a Dogma website and has awalk-on part in the film: “Kevin said ‘I could see why Disney would havehad a hard time with that.'” (Disney has no comment.)
For his part, Harvey Weinstein denies the scene is an attack on Disneyand says he is excited to be shopping Dogma around. “After 20 years, I’mback to being an independent producer again with all my competitors onthe phone promising me the world,” says Weinstein, who says there’salready been heavy interest in Dogma. “I’m going to have breakfast atWarners and dinner at New Line. And I’m going to find out who has thebest commissary and the best fringe benefits.”

All things considered, it’s nice to see your name in print, but we’d have taken a mention of either of the websites with a URL over that any day. Oh well. Maybe next time. Until then, it’s back to the shadows for us…
Dogma Editorialized In Toronto…
- Oh God – Is that Alanis Morissette?
I’m a little confused about the uproar over Alanis Morissette’s role as God in the film Dogma. It’s hard to imagine what the singer could do to discredit the Supreme Being that hasn’t already been done by George Burns.
After all, Burns may have had the wizened, cute curmudgeon thing working for him, but, ultimately, he was a lecherous, one-note comic. Morisette, on the other hand, has the Raphaelite hair and the inward, painfully self-reflective personality of a true deity. And if it’s true that God is in all things and in all places at all times, why couldn’t she be a former bubble-gum pop singer turned international angsty-girl, award-winning rock star? Talk about a resurrection.
Still, if the stories about Kevin Smith’s latest, yet to be released film are true, then the protests come as no surprise. Look what happened when it was suggested in a dream sequence of 1988’s Last Temptation of Christ that Jesus’ alternate destiny might have been marrying Mary Magdalene. How crazy was that? Everyone knows that Mary Magdalene is the kind of girl you sleep with, not marry.
According to playwright Terrance McNally, the son of God wasn’t even the marrying kind. In his 1998 off-Broadway play, Corpus Christi, Jesus is a gay activist who begins an affair with Judas on senior prom night at Pontius Pilate Senior High School and later performs a same-sex wedding under a chuppah for chino-sporting apostles James and Bartholomew. Rumour has it that Gap tried desperately for a tie-in advertising campaign (Khakis swing. Khaki country. Khakis dance the hora), but to no avail. Even heretics have their limits.
In Dogma, Smith has two angels, played by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, trying to find their way back to Heaven, while Chris Rock portrays a vulgar 13th disciple. And adding another gajillion Hail Marys to his penance, Smith also has a recovering Catholic descendant of Joseph and Mary working at an abortion clinic.
Compared to that, a nice Catholic girl like Morissette playing the Creator seems awfully tame. But what’s gotten the U.S.-based Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights outraged is that Morissette sings about oral sex in the song “You Oughta Know” (sure, it’s no Ave Maria, but what do you call the biblical tale of Lot having sex with his two daughters? Wholesome?) and that she appears nude in the video Thank-you. (Though created in His/Her image, God apparently is grossed out by the human body, particularly the freaky, PG-rated pixilation of Morissettes’ pubic hair.
Smith, director of indie hits Clerks and Chasing Amy is, apparently, a practising Catholic and said that Dogma is “from first to last always intended as a love letter to both faith and God almighty… Dogma is in no way blasphemous or worthy of the mild controversy that seems to be brewing around it.”
That wasn’t enough to stop the Walt Disney Co. from labelling the film “inappropriate.” Under pressure from the Catholic League, Miramax, which is owned by Disney, decided not to release the film. Instead, Miramax co-chairmen, Bob and Harvey Weinstein, will acquire all the rights and sell it to another distributor.
A piece of advice for the Catholic League: As far as blasphemy goes, there are far better targets, like the creepy and insincere piety that’s suddenly in vogue – Roseanne telling Larry King, who was on her show shilling his book about the prayer habits of the rich and famous, that she prays every day; an audience full of avaricious record execs at the Grammys applauding and whup-whupping Lauryn Hill’s reading from the Psalms when she accepted an award; anyone, ever, asking the question, What would Jesus do?
And at the risk of sounding holier than thou, I imagine that the Almighty has bigger sinners to punish – like, maybe, war criminals, child molesters, or CEOs of companies using sweatshop labour – than a filmmaker and a few entertainers.
Who knows? The Lord might even like the star turn. Any Creator who makes it flood for 40 days, drops manna from Heaven, and helps their son turn water into wine, has got to be a drama queen.

- The buzz around Kevin Smith’s “Dogma” (DOGMA) is growing to epic proportions! Stories continue to move through Hollywood about Harvey Weinstein’s decision to buy back the rights to the religious comedy from Miramax’s parent company, Disney. By doing so, Weinstein can now shop the picture around to other distributors and protect Disney from what would have been almost certain controversy. It remains to be seen if “Dogma” can find a place in the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, much less a domestic distributor. Stay tuned!

- “Over the past twenty years, Star Wars references have bored their way into most everything pop-cultural. Perhaps the most unusual and elaborate example on film can be found in Kevin Smith’s 1994 no-budget slacker comedy, Clerks. Below, the movies two loquacious convenience store lazy boys, Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson), and an interloping costumer (Thomas Burke) deconstruct the morality of the rebellion against the empire in Return of the Jedi.”

- KEVIN SMITH SPEAKS ABOUT GREEN ARROW AND WHETHER IT WILL HAPPEN OR NOT
Kevin Smith was the guest of honor last Friday night at the University of Central Florida. During the question and answer session, Kevin responded to questions about his upcoming film, DOGMA, and several other projects. The subject of the new GREEN ARROW series came up in the discussion. Fans have been waiting for Kevin to relaunch the series after it was announced last year that he would take over after the ongoing monthly series was put on hiatus with GREEN ARROW #137 and #1,000,000. It has been much rumored that Oliver Queen will be returning in Kevin’s series after the archer’s apparent death in GREEN ARROW #101.
Kevin responded to the question at UCF to the fact that “…the Green Arrow books may or may not happen, depending on Jimmy (Palmiotti’s) & Joe (Quesada’s) availability to draw the thing.”
With that stated and repeated on News Askew website (www.newsaskew.com) earlier this week, some fans have begun to worry whether or not if GREEN ARROW will ever relaunch. A few days after discouraged posters left posts of worrying and apprehension on more than one message board across the internet, Kevin Smith posted a message on the Unofficial Green Arrow Message Board (www.sigma.net/alvaro/gamb/ ) on Wednesday the following:
“Some folks have been asking if the Green Arrow I was going to do is ever going to happen. Right now, it looks good. Unfortunately, I’ve gotta wait for Quesada to free up some time to draw the story (he’s the artist I need to use), so it’s kind of subject to that. What this means, really, is that my version of ‘GA’ will happen…
It’s just a matter of when.
Thanks for your patience. I’ll try to make it worth it. “
Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti are currently working with Kevin Smith on Marvel Comics’ DAREDEVIL series. Joe Quesada, whom Kevin has picked out as his choice of penciller to work on the new GREEN ARROW book, responded on the Event Comics Message Board (www.eventcomics.com) which he moderates with the following reply on Wednesday after Kevin’s statements at UCF had been made public across the internet:
“The subject has been discussed, let’s just leave it at that. No discussions have occurred with DC and right now my priorities are to finish my commitment with Marvel whether that ends in a year or it get’s extended.”
There has been no confirmation from DC Comics or GREEN ARROW editor Darren Vincenzo as of yet to the fact or not whether Jimmy and Joe have been signed for the series. Editor Darren Vincenzo has also said in past online chats that the plans for the new GREEN ARROW series are aimed at having it hit the shelves before 2000. Also of note, Mr. Vincenzo stated in DC Online’s SHERWOOD FORUM LIVE chats on America Online that for the new GREEN ARROW series, the artist he had in mind was someone he was working with on the BATMAN: NO MAN’S LAND, yet he never revealed whom.
So right now, Green Arrow fans are just going to have to sit back and wait a bit longer than expected for the return of DC’s greatest archers and their adventures with what looks like the return of Oliver Queen as well as seeing how the creative teams on this highly anticipated book are going align and fall in place.
