  • In the Michael Fleming column of Variety he mentions that one of the people Cameron Crowe wants as a supporting role in his new film is Jason Lee. Apparently, Crowe is a Lee fan and wants him for an audition for his next yet untitled project. This is just rumor at this point, but a good sign we may be seeing Lee on the big screen in another big flick in the future. Here’s some more details on the casting:
MUCH ADO ABOUT BIJOU

While Cameron Crowe labors to replace Brad Pitt in his upcoming untitled film about the music biz for DreamWorks, he’s secured one up-and-comer who might be musically well established by the time the film comes out. Just cast in the ensemble is Bijou Phillips, the 18-year old former model whose first album, “I’d Rather Eat Glass,” is getting released this week by Almo Records.

She’s the half-sister of Wilson Phillips singer Chynna Phillips and daughter of Mamas and the Papas founder John Phillips. She made her screen debut in the James Toback-directed “Black & White.” Her music career’s being steered by former ICM music head Jonny Podell and screen career by ICM’s Nick Styne and manager Janet Billig. Crowe’s not yet completed casting, but names being mentioned for the ensemble include Jason Lee, Noah Taylor, Fairuza Balk and Anna Paquin. After what Crowe’s “Jerry Maguire” did for Tom Cruise, every young leading man is vying for the role Pitt vacated. Meryl Streep, who was once mentioned for a lead, is also out.

  • Here’s an oldie but a goodie: In Overstreet’s Fan from November ’95, there appeared a 2 page preview for the series Cybernary. Right on panel one was Jay and Silent Bob. Attached is a picture of the panel they appear in (along with a close-up).
  • Finally, Files Askew gets something special for you Macintosh lovers out there! Dogma Mac Icons dogmaicons.sit, based on the latest pics that leaked from the film (though we’re PC dudes so we can’t verify this) are now available at our ever-growing Askew file library.
  • Finally today, pro wrestler Chris Jericho’s homepage (www.chrisjericho.com) touts Clerks as his “Movie Of The Week”:
The movie of the week is Clerks. Very funny indie film by Kevin Smith and featuring the always entertaining Jay and Silent Bob!

  • Howdy-ho, folks (That reminds me, if you missed the hilarious South Park “Park Wars” trailer, you can download it over at countingdown.com. You gotta see this thing.). Anyway, the Askew scene EXPLODED once again yesterday and today with another enjoyable appearance by Kev, more Dogma set pics, and TONS of NewsBites. So, without any further delay:

  • Amateur photographer Ben Affleck was VERY busy on the sets of his latest films, and it wasn’t just with the acting stuff! Affleck.Com has quietly posted a TON of new shots from the sets of Armageddon, Forces of Nature, and…Dogma!!! We’ve placed local copies of these really nifty Dogma set shots here on the site for your enjoyment. They really are quite good, too! Nice to know that if Ben ever gets sick of standing in front of a camera that he can do a fine job behind one as well. So, enjoy folks. You can see the full collection over at affleck.com.

  • Yet again, we’re hearing GREAT things about Kevin’s marathon Q&A session at Virgina Tech last evening…Once again, the packed auditorium got to hear some great stories, funny jokes, and witness the splendor of the Dogma trailer. Want to know more? We’ve got all the dirt on what went down over at our Virgina Tech WrapUp Page.

More Dogma Pics!

  • We gotta admit, these pics took us by surprise when we saw them this morning! These were sent to AICN by a scooper over there, and honestly, we have no idea how they got out! In fact, these shots don’t even come from the trailer, but they ARE shots from the actual film, so these got leaked out by VA directly or at least a source very close to the inside! So, here’s a summary of these character pics from Dogma.

Anyway, above you see 4 non-spolier shots of how some of the major characters appear in the film, and we must say, these are some very good stills. You know the guys in the first one up there, that’s Loki and Bartelby, in the often talked about gun-buying scene. Off frame to the left? None other than Jeff Anderson behind the counter. The second shot gives you a look at how Jay & Silent Bob appear in the film. Keep in mind this is, by far, the duo’s largest role yet. Our 3rd pic features SalmaHayek & Chris Rock as Serendipity & Rufus. We’ve seen shots of these folks on set before, but this is an actual shot of their appearance “in character”. Finally, a very choice shot of the film’s main character, Bethany (Linda Fiorentino). We won’t go into the context of this scene, it’s towards the end of the film and too spoiler-related.

Well, there ya have it, folks! A first look at some of the great ensemble cast that Kev & crew assembled for Dogma. Again, we dunno how these pics leaked, but if there’s more, you can bet we’ll have them for ya right here!

  • Listening to Howard Stern looking back on those great Channel 9 episodes they did for TV years back, we couldn’t help but be pissed that we weren’t smart enough to tape any of them for ourselves when we first watched them! Anyone out there a Stern fan and have these gems on tape? Drop us a line, maybe we can work something out. Okay, now that we’ve got the totally non Askew stuff out of the way…

Chasing Amy On Dateline NBC…

March 23rd, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Wookiemonster, The Dingles, Ryan Whelan, Louis Mastorakos, & The Longshot

  • Quite a few of you caught the prime time mention of Chasing Amy last night on Dateline NBC: Unfortunately, it was in a segment on “Film Flubs”, which showcased continutity errors and other mishaps that can be seen by the watchful eye in many of today’s Blockbusters. The scene in question from Amy was the famous diner piece where Holden is talking to Jay and Silent Bob. Cigarette ashes disappear and then reappear on Holden’s Leg. Pretty nitpicky if you ask us, but cool to see the flick getting the attention, and amongst other Oscar films such as Saving Private Ryan, Titanic, and Shakespeare In Love! One scooper noted, “…it was great to see Chasing Amy on primetime, and it was worth it just to hear Jay say ‘It’s like Cube sez, life ain’t nothin’ but bitches and money.’ on network T.V.”

What’s Up With Dogma & Miramax?

March 23rd, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Yep, Dogma’s got some controversy surrounding it again…Except THIS time, it’s not about the content of the film! Lately, rumors have been floating around the the ‘Max has lost interest in the flick and, while we’ve got no official word on what’s up with the film’s release, we can sure state the facts and give our opinions on some other stuff.
FACT : Dogma is not currently on Miramax’s 1999 (or early 2000) release schedule. Does this mean the movie’s not coming out until after that? Of course not. Just because a flick’s not on a release slate doesn’t mean we’re not gonna see it.

FACT : No Dogma trailer was shown along with Miramax’s other clips at ShoWest. This is also true. However, this does not necessarily mean that Miramax was at all disappointed in the film or how it looks. What we do know is that Kevin & Scott cut together a trailer that many of you had the chance to catch at the Stash Bash a few weeks ago. This trailer was done on an AVID system, then transferred to VHS. Kev himself mentioned a few times throughout the day that, while this trailer was close to the final version that would hit theaters, it needed some cleaning up and would look a lot better on film. Plus, in our opinion, there’s still a few shots in that trailer that may need to be edited down a bit (a few surprises, cuts, and profanity that will be trimmed for general audience consumption). Our opinion is that Miramax just wasn’t ready to let the cat out of the bag yet on this one. It’ll make the buzz even bigger when Dogma takes Cannes by storm in May.

MYTH : Miramax and all the execs aren’t interested in the film and have lost faith and interest in the film. This is just total BS. Anyone who says this is completely talking out of their ass, for lack of a better expression. All we’ve heard is that all who’ve seen the film, including the big guys, have been VERY pleased with what they’ve seen. This is Miramax’s gem for 1999. Don’t expect it to go away.

MYTH : Miramax is afraid of marketing Dogma and the backlash that will follow. HA! Miramax THRIVES on free publicity, and that’s just what Dogma’s gonna get. Those of you who read this website know that, for a movie that’s still quite a few months away from release, publicity for this sucker is already INCREDIBLE, even WITHOUT a trailer in theaters! This is very rare and a great honor for a film. Expect Miramax to sit back and enjoy the whispering now, and then the roars of both anticipation (from eager fans) and horror (from angry Catholics) as the film approaches release. And then, you can bet the ‘Max publicity machine will be in full swing…At least, as much as it needs to be.

TO CLOSE : In our opinion: Don’t fret. While Dogma certainly is NOT going through the traditional steps before a flick gets released, everything’s falling into place. With the score in full swing and digital effects being worked on daily, this flick’s gonna be in great shape in no time. Expect Miramax to submit Dogma to Cannes for its first public unveiling this May. Like Pulp Fiction a few years back, this film’s just gonna blow audiences away, since it really is different than anything you’ve seen before. Expect a similar track to that famous Tarantino flick (Which took top honors at Cannes that year, as many of you know) for Dogma. Once the festival’s over, Dogma will be the main topic of discussion at all those executive’s meetings, and, you can bet, right on top of that 1999 Miramax release schedule.

Commentary/Oscars…

  • Hey folks…Okay, after a light weekend we’re back today. We’d actually planned to get online before the Oscars, but some technical difficulties with our home internet connection kept us from doing ANYTHING. As of now, everything should be back and in total working order. We’ve got some newsbites for ya, and a nifty new poll, from a suggestion by Kilgore. As many of you know, Shakespeare In Love did quite well in the running lastnight, taking home 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, so we congratulate Ben, Miramax, and Gwyneth, who also took home the Best Actress award for the flick. Now we can say we’ve shaken the hands of 3 Academy Awards winners…Not too shabby for a couple of schlubs from Central PA! With the Miramax press machine in full gear behind Dogma next year, and the amazing flick that it is, ya never know, next year that number might move up to 4. Anyway, we all KNOW about the Oscar winners…Let’s get on to some stuff you may NOT have heard yet today:

  • Kevin’s almost weekly mention in Entertainment Weekly continues… This from the TV section listing for Saturday, March 27th, 10-11 p.m. (EST):
Superheroes (TLC, TV-G)
Despite intelligent commentary from comic-book figures such as Batman Beyond cocreator Paul Dini, Clerks film director Kevin Smith, and comics historian Trian Robbins, this hour about the history of the medium succumbs to the usual: campy narration (by TV Batman Adam West) and actors reading dialogue while we look at static comic-book panels. For every stab atmuch-needed analysis, there are minutes wasted on corny Zap! Pow! silliness. D+

Don’t worry, though, we’re sure that Kev’s segment gets an A+.
Gary Rydstrom and Richard Hymns

  • Richard Hymns, who won an Oscar for sound editing last night, is on board for Dogma! This is a good sign that, as Kevin’s been telling us, this is a GREAT sounding flick.
  • Last week’s Comics Buyer’s Guide had the nominations for the 1999 Harvey Awards. Kevin is one of five nominees up for Best New Talent. The Harvey Awards are voted on exclusively by comic-book creators. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on April 16, in conjuction with the the WonderCon in Oakland. Aha…So THAT’S why he’s showing up!
  • Affleck’s still got it. Forces of Nature was # 1 at the box office. It brought in $13.9 million for the Friday-Sunday total.
  • And finally today, from the “Things That Won’t Die” column:
Steve Austin Powers Ahead

The bionic man could soon be hitting the big screen. The New York Post reports Universal Pictures are interested in a film of ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’. based on the popular 70s television series about a bionic agent named Steve Austin (‘A man barely alive…’). Cult director Kevin Smith, responsible for ‘Clerks’ and ‘Chasing Amy’, has written a script – so has ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ writer Joss Whedon, and it is not known which of these is favoured. One star of the original series, Richard Anderson, is slated to work as producer. Lee Majors, who played the original Austin, will not be involved. Neither will Sandra Bullock, who played the Bionic Girl in TV movie early on in her career. [www.popcorn.co.uk]
