Schreck Leaves Oni Press…

March 15th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by TwlghtMan

  • It’s official now, Bob Schreck has indeed left Oni Press. Sounds like everything there has been left in good hands, though, so we’re not at all worried for the future of any of the Askew books. We wish Bob luck in his new position. Here’s the article, courtesy of Another Universe:
Bob Schreck Moves to DC

by Matt Brady

Continuing to collect editors the way fans collect their comics, DC recently announced that Bob Schreck, former Senior Group Editor at Dark Horse Comics, and more recently co-founder (with Joe Nozemack) of Oni Press, has been appointed to the position of Senior Editor in the DC Universe editorial group.

A multi-decade veteran of comics, Schreck began his comic book career in marketing, promotions and administration, working for Creation Conventions, Marvel Comics and Comico, and rose to the position of Marketing Director at Dark Horse Comics in 1990.

Later, Schreck became Senior Group Editor at Dark Horse, editing such projects as Frank Miller’s Sin City and Mike Allred’s Madman, as well as winning two consecutive Harvey Awards as the editor of Dark Horse Presents.

Leaving Dark Horse in 1996, Schreck continued to develop high-profile projects, such as Clerks: the Comic Book, Oni Double Feature and Whiteout.

“I am extremely honored that Paul Levitz and Mike Carlin have invited me to DC Comics and very excited to be joining such an impressive group of editors,” Schreck said.

“Oni Press is now in the capable hands of Joe Nozemack and Jamie S. Rich, and I’m certain that they will continue to make me proud of what we started together. Meanwhile, I look forward to working closely with the many friends and associates I’ve made over the years at DC, and am eager to help them to continue publishing great comics reading for all ages.”

While at DC, Schreck will become part of Mike Carlin’s DC Universe group, and is expected to take on a diverse range of assignments and to acquire new projects for the group. Because he will not arrive at the DC offices until May, his only announced assignment at this time is taking over Legends of the DC Universe.

DC’s Executive Vice President and Publisher Paul Levitz weighed in on Schreck’s move, saying…”Bob has spent his considerable time in comics showing his eclectic great taste, ability to work with talented people, and to be a cheerleader for projects as both an editor and a marketer. That’s a great combination of editorial skills, and I look forward to seeing the effect he has on DC.”

Mike Carlin, Executive Editor of the DC Universe added, “Bob joins DC at a particularly exciting time,” referring to two other recently announced DC additions. “He, Heidi MacDonald and Matt Idelson should infuse the DC Universe with new and different ideas that will help keep ‘The Original Universe’ just that.”

A current resident of the Pacific Northwest, Schreck will begin work for DC on April 1, working from his home, and plans to relocate to New York City on May 1.

Word also comes through the grapevine that Shreck’s move to DC will attract a few creators back who may have had some difficulties with DC’s policies in the past, with one creator already hinting that he may be looking at some DC work in his future. More details as we get them.

  • Add another one to Kev’s long list of appearances! This time, it’s at Wondercon in Oakland, CA. Dates for the ‘Con are April 16-18. We’re not sure exactly which days he’ll be on tap yet, maybe ALL of them, but details have just popped up over at the Con’s official site. Kevin will appear on a panel with other Marvel Knights members, where he’ll talk about the books he’s worked on, as well as Dogma and the past flicks. We’re sure he’ll be signing, too. Should be a fine time!
  • Ben Affleck’s scheduled to appear on NBC’s Today Show this coming Sunday. The topic? Why, Forces Of Nature, of course.

EXCLUSIVE: The Courier’s Stash Report!

  • We’ve got an EXCELLENT piece from The Courier that photographer Jeff Lysiak and author Melanie Schroeder were kind enough to mail to us today…In addition to the full text of the article, we’ve got originals of 9 photographs taken at the event (only 3 of which actually appeared in the paper), all right here at News Askew for your viewing pleasure. The Courier did indeed have clearance for interior photography, albeit Clerks-style (B&W), so we’ve got some excellent shots of the store interior, including the props you’re allowed to see (sorry, we had to blur out some sensitive Dogma-related material to cover our asses). Anyway, many thanks to The Courier for allowing us to post the story and these exclusive pics. Check it all out right here!

  • Here comes that snow we talked about…UGH. Now they’re calling for 5-10 inches from now into Monday…Needless to say tomorrow may be a good day not to go into work! Oh well…Anyway, we’ve got NewsCam pointing out the window so you can enjoy watching the snow accumulate, at least while there’s visibility out there. As for the news, things have been slowing down again, and it’s a welcome calm after the last 2 weeks…We’ve got a couple stories though, as well as a nifty new poll topic for ya, courtesy of John Doe:

View Askew’s Gala Site Online…

March 14th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Ming

  • Ming’s got the Stash Bash Gala site online, and he’s proven two things, without a doubt: (1) He can put together a slick, jam-packed, informative website and, (2) We look like shit in pictures. Put a camera in front of me and I swear my face contorts into some god awful grimace…And while a hockey jersey made us easy enough to spot, it also looks to add about 50 pounds! Oh well…All kidding aside, there’s a TON of stuff over there, with the centerpiece being the massive collection of pics: Many of the guests inside of the Stash (Ming’s got the only shots from inside the store)…It’s a great chance to put faces with the names of a lot of the folks you’ve seen around the board, too. Don’t miss checking out this page.

John Hughes On…Kevin!

March 14th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Chris May

  • With Kevin using references to John Hughes and his flicks in comics as well as in “Dogma”, it was only a matter of time before someone asked Hughes about his thoughts on the guy:
“Certainly, a lot of today’s young filmmakers must have grown up watching Hughes’ films, and I wondered if he noticed an unfluence. “I haven’t seen a lot of them,” Hughes admits. “I’m not avoiding them, I just don’t watch many movies. I saw Rushmore, which I really liked. I couldn’t imagine smaller footsteps than mine.”

I brought up Kevin Smith, writer/director of Clerks and Chasing Amy, who has more than once mentioned Hughes as an influence, even going so far as to base his upcoming Dogma around a quest by his recurriong characters, Jay and Silent Bob, to find Shermer, Illinois (a mythical Chicago suburb where many of Hughes’ teen films were set). “Someone mentioned that to me,” Hughes says. “I saw Clerks, and it made me a little jealous. I wanted to do something similar. I like how he stays in New Jersey and retains that regional flavor. I admire what he’s doing.” [INK 19]

Very kind words, indeed…

  • Get those DareDevil books ready, West Coasters! Kevin, Joe & Jimmy are scheduled to appear at Golden Apple Comics on Thursday, April 15th, from 7-9 PM, to celebrate the success of the great Marvel Knights series. Surf on over HERE for more details.
  • Jay and Silent Bob make an appearance in the latest issue of Batman: Gotham Adventures — #12. If anyone’s got a scan, please send it!
  • Has Bob Schreck, Oni’s founder, left the company? Here’s the story:
Oni The Lonely

Bob Schreck has been offered Archie Goodwin’s vacant position at DC Comics and has left Oni Comics, the company he set up, to take it.

Schreck was allegedly offered an editorial job by DC when he left Dark Horse, but Schreck’s recent track record at Oni have convinced DC that a higher position would suit his talents more. A prominent DC employee wouldn’t confirm or deny this story, but said simply “Rich, no one can replace Archie Goodwin”. Indeed. Another industry source states that DC are looking for a Schreck-like figure. And a phone call to Oni Press confirmed that Schreck has been offered the position but “that’s it right now.”

Anyway the rumour is that Schreck now seems convinced that DC is the place to go. And surely DC employees aren’t allowed to own half of another comic book company? Look for some strange things happening at Oni shortly.

Schreck, Heidi McDonald and Matt Idelson, all in one week. Is this another part of DC’s attempt to own the universe? And if the Marvel thing doesn’t work out, could they find room for Jim Shooter? [RICH’S RAMBLINGS]

Catch ya next time…

  • A bit late with the update, we realize, but the Harrisburg bar scene beckoned last night, so….Anyway, as promised, we’re starting to debut some of the new features of the site — Today it’s the NewsCam. See below for details. Oh, and on a different note, Ming’s working on View Askew’s stash gala wrap page, which should contain a much fuller variety of photos since he took a ton of shots from inside the Stash as well, where cameras from everyone else were forbidden. We’ll let you know when it’s up and how to get there. Plus, we’ve got just a few news tidbits today, but nothing to really write home about. Jay’s been hitting the View Askew board a TON lately (he’s finally got hooked on the web like the rest of us), so if you surf over there you may be able to ask the guy a question or two. Oh, and on a TOTALLY different topic, has everyone been reading up on the Alien series coming to DVD in June? WOW! Man, is it a GREAT time to own a DVD player. Alright, here we go:
