View Askew Milestones…

March 7th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Something else that came out of the Gala today, while it may have seemed subtle to others, were several key dates that many of these things can be expected. The Vulgar and Clerks: Not So Special Edition teasers both gave approximate arrival times for the films, while Kevin hinted on when to expect to start seeing the Dogma teaser and trailer popping up in your local theater (The Dogma pieces, by the way, will remain cut the same way they are today, so the actual trailer that Kevin & Scott cut will be the official one for the film, as well!). Anyway, here’s a handy table summarizing it all – Feel free to print it and hang it on your bulletin board as a nifty reminder, next to that DVD one we posted last week. Keep in mind, these dates are NOT OFFICIAL, and can change in a heartbeat, but represent the general plan at View Askew at the present time:
TITLE APPROX. RELEASE
Dogma Teaser June 1999
Dogma Trailer August 1999
Clerks: NSSE August 1999
Dogma October 1999
Vulgar Fall 1999

View Askew & Kev In EW This Week…

March 7th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by J. Aclin & Chasing Holden

  • Entertainment Weekly sure likes Kevin & View Askew! This week, Kevin’s listed as “Winner of the Week” for developing the Clerks animated series:
“Kevin Smith ABC is developing an animated sitcom based on the director’s cult classic Clerks. That should keep the censors on the toes.”

Funny stuff! Also, the View Askew website has a very kind writeup towards the back of the issue.

“…One of the first such pioneers in cyberspace was Clerks’ Kevin Smith. Sure, he’s a big shot now that those sugar daddies at Miramax are marketing his next film, Dogma. But Smith’s View Askew Productions site (www.viewaskew.com), with its seemingly bong-hit-induced production diaries and archives of video clips (including one of Smith being raked over the coals by the Cartoon Network’s Space Ghost), gives you the sense that Smith’s still a drooling comics fan from Jersey keepin’ it real.” B+

We can only hope to see News Askew and Dogma: Rumor Control back there someday as well!

Paul Dini Supports Clerks Series…

March 6th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We got a very, VERY nice letter from none other than PAUL DINI, the writer/producer of those kick-ass Batman/Superman and Batman Beyond shows over at the WB. In it, he talks a bit about the biz and shows a very deep support for getting the Clerks series on the air ASAP. He even tells us he’s a daily News Askew reader, which warms our little hearts. 🙂 Anyway, here’s Paul’s wonderful letter, unedited:
Hey Guys,

I’ve been following the “Clerks”/Disney story with both interest and distress. Kevin and Dave are good friends of mine and I’ve been aware of “Clerks – The Cartoon” since almost day one. A year ago they asked me if I’d like to work on the show, and other than contributing a story idea here or a voice there, I didn’t have time to add much more than enthusiastic support. Then again, it looked like “Clerks” would be a runaway hit regardless of anything I could bring to the Quick Stop. It had hysterical scripts, inspired visual direction and a great cast. Everything seemed to indicate that the series would find an audience and flourish in prime time.

Now it seems ABC (and thereby Disney) is intent on dumping “Clerks” in the middle of the summer wasteland. This is a terrible mistake. Not only is “Clerks” funnier than nearly everything else ABC has in primetime, it would be the perfect series to hook the upper teen audience too old for “Sabrina” and too young for “Drew Carey”. Ah, but now I’m thinking like a network programmer, and ABC clearly employs chimpanzees for that.

What has happened here is another example of what has come to be known throughout LA animation circles as “The Disney Switch”. Many’s the time Disney has wooed top cartoon talent (writers, composers, producers, designers, you name ’em) with great deals and the opportunity to produce dream projects, only to quickly shoot those projects out from under the talent and reassign them to routine busy-work once they got them under contract and on staff. That way Disney would own the projects but they wouldn’t have to produce them (and, more importantly, neither could any competing studio) and the talent could then toil away on more traditional DIsney fare for the greater glory of the Mouse. Welcome to Pleasure Island, boys. Just bray a little if that harness feels too tight, won’tcha? We won’t loosen it any, we just likes ta hear ya cry.

Okay, so I’m being melodramatic, and we all know Dave and Kev are not going to wind up finishing out their “Clerks” stint story-editing “Recess”. But it is tragic to think that a company which claims to thrive on creativity would shunt “Clerks” aside because it isn’t “Pepper Ann” (thank god) or because they fear it won’t attract as big a tune-in as “Who Wants to Be Regis’s Brain-Dead Straight Man”. Wise up, Mickey. You’re only hurting yourself by trying to stifle a great show. Run it now and buy more. Lots more.

Paul Dini

  • Movieline continues their DEATH HUNT on Dogma…Someone at that magazine must really really hate Kev or something. Anyway, they’ve got the flick up for several evil “Alternative Oscars”
  • Dogma will see a release in New Zealand on April 27th.
  • Reports are rolling in stating that Affleck has indeed signed on to the Armageddon-like epic proportioned flick, “Pearl Harbor”, for no $$ up front, just taking cash off the back end. The flick costs too much to offer any big salaries to actors for just working on the project, but a fx-laden script and big budget are sure-fire recipes for a hit next summer. Usually. Right, Dean & Roland?
  • A test screening of the new Cameron Crowe flick starring JASON LEE??? Wish we could be there! That’s right, a screening of the currently titled “Stillwater” takes place at Century Cinema 16 in Mountain View, CA (Bay Area) next Thursday, March 9th. Flyers were handed out already (sorry!), which you need to get in, PLUS you even need to call an 800 number to RSVP and get your name on the list. Wow. Send us those exlusive reviews! We think this one will REALLY put Lee on the worldwide star map, even moreso than already.

Dogma Digital FX: First Look…

March 6th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We had our first look at a few test shots of the digital FX going into Dogma today and wow, are they GOOD! Most of the shots involved Ben in his wings. This shot was close to finished, and looked FANTASTIC. Also, the “shit monster”, has been replaced by an all-digital creature that looks more realistic and moves more fluidly in a key action shot. We’d originally thought they were replacing him completely, now it seems it’ll just be for a bit here and there. Hopefully the continuity will be unnoticeable. Work has just started on this dude, but he’s already shaping up to be something special, and quite memorable. Dogma’s gonna rock, folks, and those of us here at the Gala today are certainly getting a taste of that.

More from the News Askew camp later…We gotta head back to the Stash!

Live From Red Bank, It’s Us!

March 6th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Good morning, all! We’re going to be heading over to the Stash shortly, and most likely spending a good part of the day there (who knows what the day will bring), but we’ll keep you updated on anything exciting that might be happening, especially for those of you that can’t be here with us this weekend. Everyone catch the hilarious bit on Ben’s Dennis Miller appearance last night when Kevin called in? Funny stuff. If you missed it, it airs again this Sunday night on HBO. We’ll have a full, more official update for ya later. ‘Til then…

And now, as promised, the update…We’re back at the hotel for a break from the action to clue all of you in on what’s been going on today! Heeeeeere we go:

Stash Gala Update…

March 6th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We’re in the middle of group 3 at the moment, with group 4 starting shortly. The guest list: Kevin, Jay, Brian (who took the first 2 tours out, Jay took the third), Joe Quesada, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Amanda Connor of “Painkiller Jane” fame, an excellent book. Kevin’s been busiest, signing and chatting the day away with the 60 or so that enter with each group. We’ve been spending quite a bit of time meeting many of the fans ourselves. Lots of cool people, and News Askew fans, which always makes you OK in our book! The Event Comics crew have been lots of fun. It’s nice finally having the chance to meet and talk to them in person.

The Stash itself is amazing: Props galore, dating all the way back to Clerks and, of course, the unveiled Dogma stuff that you can only see today. The store is stocked with all the swag you could ever dream of getting your hands on, and it’s the coolest, roomiest comic shop we’ve ever seen. Definitely make it a point to stop in sometime if you’re missing today’s event.

Ming’s been taking lots of pictures of everything, so we’re sure a lot of this stuff is gonna resurface for all to see. Oh, and one last thing: Whomever was BANGING on our door at 3:30 AM last night, you people are on our SHIT LIST!

Clerks Re-Release…

March 6th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • The Stash Gala hasn’t, of course, been without some revelations from the man himself. Guests have been treated to a short video program during the Stash visit today, which featured the Dogma trailer and teaser, Dogma Digital FX shots, a Vulgar teaser, Brian & Jeff’s test readings for Clerks, and, surprisingly, a humorous Clerks: “Not So Special Edition” trailer, heralding the re-release of the flick that Kevin says may happen about 2 months before Dogma’s release. The trailer itself is quite humorous, with classic scenes seperated by placards saying things like, “Relive The Magic” and such. Funny stuff. It’s going over very well with guests. We’ll keep tabs on the scope of the re-release and if it’s going to happen – We just thought you’d want to know that the nation may have a chance again to see this classic up on the big screen before Dogma takes the world by storm.

Ben “Flaunts”…

March 5th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Jennifer Broman

  • Seems that old Ben’s taking some stabs at column writing after his many successful acting stints as of late. This one comes rom Flaunt Magazine‘s debut issue. We know it’s not VA related or anything, but at least thought you’d like to see what the guy’s up to in his spare time:
War, What is it Good For?
— Ben Affleck (Flaunt, Premiere Issue 1999)

Andrew Jackson won the greatest naval battle of the War of 1812 two weeks after the peace treaty had been signed but before the armies could be informed. We’ve certainly come a long way since Old Hickory whacked all those Limeys at the Battle of New Orleans — and not such a great way, if you ask me.

Don’t be alarmed, you haven’t picked up a copy of “George” with the wrong cover on it. The editors of “Flaunt” have asked me to offer my thoughts on the nature and essence of celebrity, and I think this historical metaphor bears some significance on the topic. You see, it’s all about “Springer” these days. We live in “Montel”‘s world, where a whip-quick media-Internet conglomerate runs the Weather Channel 24 hours a day. We have a national daily paper, and a celebrity gossip program runs several different shows a day on a dedicated entertainment-gossip station. What’s about to happen is already old news. And if the news is your trade, you better stay six steps ahead of what’s happening tomorrow if you want to feed your kids. With all these heads talking and not all that much that truly warrants talking about, even Warhol would be amazed. Almost everybody is famous. A tone-deaf, cross-dressing, Satan-worshipping, modern-day minstrel (who couldn’t turn out a buck-twenty on a subway platform) names himself after a model and a serial killer and becomes an international star and a multi-millionaire overnight. Forget being the next Sojourner Truth, Thomas Paine, or even Horace Mann. All you have to do is get stuck in a hole in the ground and you’re a lock in the morning paper. Do a Diet Coke commercial and you can end up in “People” where 30 million loyal weekly readers can hear all about the lean years and your dog named “Ralph.” Sleep with your teacher, write a jingle, get a movie made with your buddy from back home — it doesn’t take much. Rikki Lake owns the world and most of us are lucky if we can make the rent.

The line between celebrity and actual achievement got deeply blurred –and somewhere along the line Oprah rubbed it out. There’s a whole truckload of tabloids and local WB affiliates bickering and hardscrabbling over a smaller and smaller piece of the bored-housewife-who-can’t-have-an-orgasm pie. The size, smell, and shape of the presidential semen stain can only get you so far. Unless it vaguely resembles Jesus in the Shroud of Turin in a 3-D poster kind of way, there really isn’t too much more to say. This may help explain the modern form of yellow journalism. Our freedom-of-the-press advocates wave copies of Voltaire and declare the public has a terribly important right to know about what’s really going on with Frank and Kathy Lee, Rosie’s kid’s discipline problems, and who slept over at Clooney’s last night. Remember the Maine, indeed.

The problem is, once we’ve hastily ushered all these folks up onto public stage, they have to merit the attention. So what do we do with ’em? That’s what Jerry figured out. Keep a few spare lesbian pygmy brawlers at the ready and get ’em out there before the last cuckolded Floridians have stopped bawling — or brawling. Because after conferring deity-dom on these folks (who, after all, are just the same hapless chumps we all are — or went to high school with) all there is to do is find old pictures of them and marvel at how they’ve “had some work done.” That’s why everyone listens to Howard Stern. He’s the kid in HeadStart who, after the other kids spend all that time building the Lego house, comes careening madly in and gleefully brings the whole thing crashing down. And isn’t that really the fun part?

So what if famous people aren’t really special after all, but just the same goofy kids with snot in their noses we knew in sixth grade? (For further evidence, see the photo of Julia Roberts in the first issue of thismagazine.) With phlegm in the nose and head in the stars, we’ve got our eye on our “celebs.” ‘Cause let’s face it, the best part is when he finds out she’s really a “he” and pummels that snot right out of him.

Somewhere out there Old Hickory is surely shaking his old gray head. But hey, at least he’s watching.

Don’t forget: You can catch Ben on Dennis Miller Live TONIGHT on HBO!
