Lynch Checks In On BHD…
- Brian Lynch resurfaced from wherever he hides when he goes off into the void for months on end, with some news on the status of “Big Helium Dog”, and the revelation that BHD 2, yes the SEQUEL, already exists in a first draft! Here’s the man himself:
Not that you don’t deserve it. Guys do a brilliant job (almost creepy in your big brother-like knowledge). BRAVO!
Just came from the big city (New York, not Red Bank) and saw BIG HELIUM DOG with some music and sound effects added. It’s like watching a whole new movie. And I can just play REALLY LOUD music over the jokes that I don’t think worked.
Kidding. I’m kidding.
Anyway, it’s shaping up rather well. Can’t wait for people to see it.
AND, I finished the way-too-long first draft of the sequel to BIG HELIUM DOG recently. I know, I know…getting ahead of myself and all, but what STAR WARS is to sci-fi and SCREAM is to slasher flicks, BIG HELIUM DOG is going to be to offensive cheesy low budget movies. I’m gonna give the world a trilogy it doesn’t want if it kills me.
TO HELL WITH A TRILOGY! Let’s go into the early teens! BIG HELIUM DOG 16: STILL BEATING A DEAD HORSE will sweep at the 2032 Oscars.
Kidding again.
Although, twenty years from now, I hope to be working on BIG HELIUM DOG episode 1: The Phantom Menace.
That’s it. Keep up the good work. Don’t let the “A” get to your heads.
Brian
The guy cracks us up. And with e-mail like that, you KNOW that BHD (and all the subsequent films) have gotta be absolute laugh riots! We’ll keep up with all the BHD news as the flick draws closer to a release.

- The Entertainment Weekly with our site reviewed hits newsstands tomorrow – Remember, the review is on page 22 of the INTERNET SUPPLEMENT, not the issue itself. You can also read the review online at their site HERE.
- A letter from a News Askew reader to the national college magazine, U! Online, got published. It’s a bit dated, since it regards the similarities between “Chasing Amy” and “Object of My Affection”, but still nice to see the press:
I hope you’re kidding. I just got done reading your Reel Deal column [Spring 1998] regarding The Object of my Affection. For anyone to use “Aniston” and “promising film career” in the same sentence is a sure sign of armageddon. Not only is she a poor actress at best (wow, what range on “Friends,” she can go from pretentious to snotty and back!), but that damn movie was already made. It was called Chasing Amy, remember?
Only Kevin Smith had the balls to make it brutally honest and hilarious, and it was made for about one half of one percent of the cost. It’s a real shame that just because a movie has a familiar face and a bottomless budget, it gets kudos from you. Show some opinion that’s against the norm, and then you’ll fully be supporting your readers.

- Janeane Garofalo, who talked very positively about “Chasing Amy” and is featured in an early scene in “Dogma”, turns 34 tomorrow. Happy Birthday!
Commentary…
As always, a new poll topic has been posted for the new week…Results from last week show that an overwhelming amount of you would still like to see “Dogma” pics on the page (if we get any more)…So, even though we’re not going to please all the people all the time (studios included), if we get them, you can expect to see some more advanced shots from the flick here (within reason, of course). Vote for your favorite Smith comic this week, and let your voice be heard!
Red Bank Trip & Dogma Trailer…
- Sorry for the late update this weekend, but we were out of town…In fact, we spent some time in Red Bank today, chatting with Kevin and Bryan at the Stash for a while (a booming business they’re doing there, for sure, lots of folks coming and going), then went up to the offices to catch the “Dogma” trailer and shoot the breeze some more. The trailer is fantastic – It summarizes the general plot of the flick then goes on to give quick flashes of a bunch of the action sequences that take place in the flick. It doesn’t ruin a thing about the movie, and it really makes the viewer want to see more. Good stuff.
Kevin confirmed that Fletch 3 is indeed a dead project, and that the long-ago rumors of Jay’s death at the end of “Dogma” are GREATLY exaggerated…Really, they are. Speaking of “Dogma”, it’s running a little under 3 hours, which means they’ve met their contractual obligation to the ‘Max, but they’re probably gonna still try and trim it down to 2:45 before the first screening for the gang.
By the way, Kevin was signing a bunch of Daredevil books at the Stash while we were there…We’re not sure if you’ll need to stop by in person to get one or of the price, but expect them to at least somehow be available soon.

- Kevin stopped by the web board and answered some posts last night: The only really big news was his summary of his Space Ghost taping, and the possibility of a Bartelby and Loki Presige Format One-shot discussing their fall from grace. Should be a neat book if it comes to light! We’ll stay on top of it for ya…
- Apparently, our story on Renée Humphrey caused some scoopers to do some digging: We now hear she’s got a movie called “Lover Girl” coming out on video October 20th.
- Finally today, anyone else notice that according to Starr’s report, Monica visited the White House 37 TIMES???? 37!?!?!? Makes ya think.
Entertainment Weekly Gives News Askew An “A”!!!
- We’re very pleased to announce that not only did the national weekly magazine “Entertainment Weekly” (to which we are proud subscribers, we might add) give us a mention, but they gave us an “A” grade to boot! In the latest issue, dated October 2, 1998, with Laryn Hill on the cover, News Askew was reviewed in the “Gossip” websites (page 22 of their new EW Internet section), with the following text:
Aimed at fans of indie director Kevin Smith (Chasing Amy, Clerks), this site also tracks such neo-heavyweights as Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. It even includes posts from the actors themselves: Last March, Affleck logged on to deny the rumors that he and Damon hadn’t written Good Will Hunting.
Well, perhaps not an ENTIRELY true write-up (those posts, after all originated on the View Askew WWWBoard), we’re pleased that the editors of EW chose to give our site a very kind write-up, and hope the national exposure will bring even more fans into the realm. If today’s your first visit, welcome! And thanks again to EW for the very kind plug.

New Humphrey Flick…
- Here’s a story from a friendly neighborhood scooper on a familiar face:
Recently I had the opportunity to be a Production Assistant (PA) on the set of a new movie directed and starring the writer of “Liar, Liar,” Mike Binder. It also features the return of Mariel Hemmingway, Steven Baldwin and Kevin Pollock. I didn’t realize until yesterday that it features a famous character from Kevin’s almost-a-mastery, “Mallrats.”
Tricia “Trish the Dish” Jones was played by Renee Humphries. She plays Didi, a bisexual ditzy nymphette in this movie, “The Sex Monster.” It never struck me who it was because she is older (about 23 now) and was made to look older, sexier and more mature in “The Sex Monster.” Her part is large and she is funny and sexy in this comedy coming out next year.
The Internet Movie Database doesn’t even have this info. They list her as Renee Humphrey however all of my casting sheets direct from the set of this movie list this Hollywood Hills native as Humphries.
Jay Does Nike, Dogma Gets Edited…
- Kevin dropped by the WWWBoard for a quick visit, where he gave some surprising news that Jason Mewes, not VincentGallo, was going to be the star of Nike‘s new ads that were filmed last week. Pretty cool! Jay’s getting his face out there more and more places lately. As for Dogma‘s status? Read on, folks:
What goes on? Weeeeeeeeeelllllll!!!
Little early P.E. for you there, folks.
So the Nike spots we shot last week – the ones that were supposed to feature Vincent Gallo? We wound up going another way, and as of October 4, you’ll start seeing a very familiar face plugging Nike Tuned Air…
Mewes.
He did quite well, and the clients (that’d be Nike and FootLocker) loved him. The spots are pretty funny. Look for them first week in Oct.
Scott and I are into reel three on the second pass of ‘Dogma’ (there are nine reels total). We’ve already cut out fourteen minutes, bringing the running time to 3 hours, three minutes. Hopefully, we’ll find at least another fourteen to shave before handing in our ‘Director’s Cut’ (though I was kind of hoping to get it down to at least 2:45 for the first ‘Max screening).
We’ve also cut a boss, two minute trailer for the flick which I wish to God we could post here. Perhaps in a few months, if we get permission. It’s very dialogue light, ironically enough, but good Lord, does it excite.
Short of that, no new tales to tell.
We’ll do our best to uncover some more info on the trailer…Like when you’ll be able to see it and what it contains. As for the flick, wow, even a 2:45 cut would be outstanding! After the ‘Max execs see it, how are they gonna be able to look Kev in the face and demand more cuts? Time will tell…
