Kevin Smith Vs. The Studios!

August 22nd, 1997 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

Kevin Smith is not at all happy with the state of comic-book adaptations. The director of Clerks and Chasing Amy is upset over Warner Bros.’ rejection of his script for Superman Lives (a.k.a. Superman Reborn), which stars Nicolas Cage. “I was tapped because I knew comics,” he tells the Philadelphia Inquirer, “and I could bridge the two audiences.” While Smith’s original script stayed true to the Superman comic series, the new one is filled with one-liners and jokes. “The studios don’t listen,” says a frustrated Smith, who cites Batman & Robin as a prime example of a big-budgeted movie brought down by a bad script. “It’s a slap in the face to comic-book fans,” he says of the flick. Smith himself has a very simple philosophy about what makes or breaks a comic-book movie. “It’s the guys in tights kicking ass,” he says.

Our thoughts exactly. But then again, you knew that already…

  • I haven’t received any mail from Ming or anyone inside, but for some reason ViewAskew.Com went down sometime around 1:00 EST today and remains down at this point (4:30 PM EST)…That’s all the information I have for you right now. I’ll let you know if I get any further insight on what the problems might be.

A Scoop Correction…

  • If you’re a regular visitor or contributor to this site, you’re aware that we always try to give credit where credit is due, whether it’s an e-mail, a web board article, or whatever. However, we neglected to mention that the source of yesterday’s Comic Shop News article came from a board regular, Phew Fighter. I hadn’t been to my local shop recently due to the UPS strike, so we did indeed grab the story from the WWWBoard, we just lost the name in the shuffle, so we do indeed owe that scoop to him. Anyone else who’s interested in breaking news to us, even if you post on the WWWBoard, it’s a good idea to drop us a line as well with the info, just for future reference. We make mistakes from time to time as you may see. Anyway, thanks again, Phew Fighter. You can visit his site at http://www.angelfire.com/wa/PhewFighter. More news after I wake up…(This update was at midnight…)

Dogma Database Update…

August 21st, 1997 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Thanks to Jay Gunn for letting us know that Dogma’s Internet Movie Database Enty has been updated to include all of the latest casting information, and that the aforementioned “shit demon” played by Ethan Supplee will be (Kev’s words) “a shit version of Clayface”. Sounds good to us! Speical Effects in a View Askew flick, huh? Sounds cool.

  • Sad how this is today’s big news, isn’t it? Anyway, ViewAskew.Com is back online, at least from what I see as of 7:00. Happy surfing!

The Big Helium Dog Is Aloft!

The Big Helium Dog

  • Vincent Pereira tells us that Big Helium Dog production began yesterday, and went VERY well for the first day of shooting! He and director Brian Lynch managed to knock out 7 tough indoor location scenes yesterday, and rumor has it that the crew was having quite a bit of trouble stifling their laughter. Sounds really promising. Congrats, guys! If anyone from the crew would like to give us some updates from the set from time to time, we’d love to hear what’s going on. We also plan on making a set visit ourselves sometime in the future if everyone’s schedule permits. Stick with us for all the latest Big Helium Dog info!

View Askew & Miramax: It’s All Good!

August 21st, 1997 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We received a scoop today from Devin Clancy, whose deft eyes caught this blurb about Kevin, Scott, and Miramax in the back of a magazine called Creative Scriptwriting’s Fall ‘97 issue:
MIRAMAX NOT CHASING KEVIN

Writer-director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) and producing partner Scott Mosier have extended their deal with Miramax Films through the end of the century. Smith will not only write and direct his own projects, but will develop material with other filmmakers. Their banner is View Askew. The deal was handled by Endeavor agency and NY attourney John Sloss.”

Sounds like a good deal to us. Hopefully View Askew and Miramax’s relationship will continue in this fashion well into the next century, also.

Chris Likes The Dogma Script!

August 21st, 1997 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • A guy named Vinny mailed us and let us know that he did a makeup job on Chris Rock for a Rolling Stone layout and had the chance to ask him a quick question about Dogma. He said that he was a “very cool guy, was very high on the script for Dogma, and seems like a fun person to work with.” Just thought you folks might like to know.

Another Supes Update…

  • Ok, if you think I’m talking too much about this, just tell me, but now I hear that Nicolas Cage has completely agreed to wearing THREE different costumes throughout the movie to help with toy merchandising, as well as driving some sort of “SuperCar”, which also will be of course created into ANOTHER toy. It really sucks seeing such a great script getting turned into this, especially after waiting so many years for another GOOD Superman movie. Alright, I’m done.

Fringe Askew Announced (For Real This Time!)

August 20th, 1997 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Ming announced that the dormant Fringe Askew section of the View Askew Webpage is now active! You can now stop by and visit sites dedicated to A Better Place, Big Helium Dog, and Vulgar. All these are independent films that View Askew is producing, so you know they gotta be good. Fringe Askew will keep you up to date on all this kind of stuff, and we’ll do our best to keep you informed on THIS site as well.
