- We apologize for not getting any news to ya yesterday, but it was a pretty busy day, with work and then finally getting to see “Starship Troopers”. GREAT movie. It really delivers the goods. The special effects are amazing and the deaths are gruesome! Paul Verhoeven REALLY managed to squeeze every dollar out of that reported $100 million that the film cost. It was a blast. Anyway, enough rambling about that. Now back to all things Askew:

- Bill Minter wrote to let us know that the “Good Will Hunting” trailer arrived at his theatre today, so look for it at a megaplex near you soon!

Small Review/Synopsis of “A Better Place”
- Somehow, we missed this little write-up of “A Better Place” that appeared when Vincent tookit to the Hamptons. Luckily, Turk 182 let us know it was there. Warning, this synopsis contains MINOR SPOILERS!!! Do NOT read if you don’t want to know anything about the film, ESPECIALLY if you’re seeing it at FFFFB in a couple months:

Following the death of his father, Barret Michaelson (Robert DiPatri) and his mother move to a new town. Things get off to a bad start at Barret’s new school when he runs afoul of a group of bullies, but he finds an unlikely ally in classmate Ryan Walker (Eion Bailey), a self-confessed misanthrope. The two loners soon become fast friends. When Ryan accidentally kills a local landowner, Barret reluctantly agrees to help Ryan cover up the death. But Ryan’s lack of remorse for the murder appalls Barret, who attempts to severe their relationship. Ryan won’t let go that easily and Barret is forced to try and save himself and Ryan from damnation. Vincent Pereira’s debut feature is an existential, edgy teen thriller that portrays contemporary youth culture with a knowing eye and biting humor.
MTV Shorts: Q&A
- We nabbed this little Q&A session directly from the board, concerning the upcoming Jay & Silent Bob shorts that Mr. Smith will be filming for MTV. We thought the questions were very good and precise, and the answers would intrest you, so in case you missed it:
1) Are the shorts going to be in black and white? (I hope so)
Not sure yet. Maybe a mix of color and b&w.
2) Are there going to be any other characters from the Jersey Trilogy involved?
Steve-Dave and Walt the Fanboy, I think. Maybe Roddy.
3) Is MTV giving you complete creative control or do they have a hand in the process?
As long as I keep it tasteful, I think I have free reign.
4) Any chance of seeing these shorts at the Gala?
Now there’s an idea…
Hope that’s enough to tide you over until next year…Of course there’s bound to be more to say about the shorts between now and then. We’ll keep an eye and an ear out.
ALL Drinking Games Updated!
- To celebrate Chasing Amy’s upcoming video and laserdisc release, we’ve made an update and added or tweaked a few rules to the Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy drinking games. Rememeber those things? We haven’t forgotten them! Special thanks to all the following people for sending in their rules and ideas for the games: Sean MacGowan, Benjamin Lesbian and Joe. If you’re a drinker, be sure and try out the games if you haven’t already, and drop us a line to let us know how it worked out!
Dogma Script Available Online…But Should You Read It?
- Well, it was only a matter of time before Drew’s Script-O-Rama got a hold of the Dogma Script. Folks who have read it say that it’s genuine and VERY funny, but we refuse to take a look at it until after seeing the flick and recommend that you do the same. However, we decided this IS newsworthy (not to mention you’d probably have found it without us, anyway), so here’s the link to it. Please don’t spoil anything for us, we wanna go in knowing as little as possible when the movie is released next year (we hope!).
Thanks to VioLenT BoB, Justin McGill, and Joel Spurny for making sure that we knew about the script. Truth is, we DID see it go up right away, but were just too tired to update the site with the link. Better late that never though, right?

Everyone assumes I’m in a royal tizzy about this…
I’m not.
The script’s been out there for quite some time. It was inevitable that it’d wind up on Drew’s site.
Do I care? Of course. Would I rather people wait and see the movie? Of course.
But people are naturally curious, so they’ll no-doubt check it out. Does that make me angry? No. Because in the end, more people wil not have read it than will have. Which means that that many more folks will be surprised when the movie comes out.
The only true neg? Fodder for the flamers who now have easy access to the script, and I’m sure will be here to chide me for writing ‘crap’ or something.
But you know what? They’ll be easy to disregard, as it’s the script I’m proudest of. And with all the top-drawer talent on board for far, far less than they’re used to getting paid, they obviously feel the same way.
So will I pitch a fit if people read the script? I haven’t yet – why would I start now. But ask yourself if you want to spoil the complete surprise you’ll be in for when you buy a ticket (or sneak into the theatre) in late ’98.
Makes a LOT of sense to me.
