  • Probably the most scooped story EVER — Dwight Ewell (of Chasing Amy’s “Hooper X” fame appeared on the new Comedy Central series “Contest Searchlight” last night as a contestant. The show is sort of a mock-up of Project Greenlight, where folks pitch their own comedy series ideas. This scooper probably summed it up most verbosely:
Dwight (Hooper X) Ewell was involved in the “Contest Searchlight” on Comedy Central. For the uninformed, this was a contest/television show that Denis Leary initiated to have regular folks submit story and show ideas. Then, three finalists out of six semi-finalists would be chosen and the final three would pitch their ideas to Leary and his crew.

Then, the final finalist would have their show idea developed into a comedy series on Comedy Central. Did I mention that the entire process would be filmed for our entertainment?

Mr. Ewell was one of the six (or was it seven?) finalists. You couldn’t miss him: He was the only black guy there and he was dressed in a very colorful garment. Unfortunately, he was not chosen to be one of the three finalists and he was disappointed. He confessed to the camera that at first there was a small part of him that thought: “White folks.”

He definitely had more class than the chick who tore into Leary with a massive whining assault. She was trying to bully him into telling her why her project wasn’t chosen. He replied, “Don’t scream at me at my own fucking contest.”

Alas, we don’t know what Mr. Ewell’s idea was, but whatever it was, it could not have been worse than the final three ideas and the one that was actually chosen. I could get into the Final Three, but I don’t have the time or the energy.

I don’t know what to make of the show itself. With other “reality” shows, I’m always skeptical as to what’s real and what isn’t. If everything on this show is real, then man, showbiz is full of assholes. If you’re interested, the show is on Wednesdays at 9:30/8:30 Central on Comedy Central.

As per Comedy Central, the show will be rerun a LOT, so just tune into the station, probably this weekend, and give it a look. Is it real or not? Decide for yourself! You can view Dwight Ewell’s pitch right HERE. Our take? The whole thing’s staged. But still a great show.
