April 19th @ 11:59 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Ed Janda

  • Here it is, folks! Car #37 in action at the Pocono Raceway. We’ve just received a disc with over 300 new shots of the car inside and out, but we figured that we’d just show you a few more for now. Jim McLauglin has confirmed that Kevin’s Stock Car will be on display at the Philadephia Comic Convention in a 20′ X 30′ booth space. We’re not sure if this will be in the main hall or outside, but attendees will be able to get a much closer look!

  • Kevin has stated that the San Antonio Roadside Attractions have been cancelled and replaced with Missouri, so we assume he’ll be filming for the tonight show when he’s out there for his Q&A apperance.
  • The Reno Gazette Journal ran an article on DVD Easter Eggs, and proclaimed “An Evening With Kevin Smith” the king of the bunch, listing all 9 hidden gems.
  • For those of you interested in following Jay’s progress and learning more about the “Rock Bottom” documentary, an official website for the project has been set up by the producers HERE. The site currently lists Jason as being in rehabilitation.
  • Jay & Silent Bob appear in Thursday’s edition of web comic “Melonpool”. There’s also a Clerks tribute of sorts at the Journeyman Illustrated site.
  • Strangely enough, a movie called “Jersey GUY” opens in limited release this week. No relation to the View Askew project, of course.
  • This months ‘Hotdog’ magazine (in the UK) has a 4 page interview with Jason Lee, including a half page illustrated guide to how to give somebody a stink-palm. The interview itself is mainly about “Dreamcatcher”, but Kevin does get a few mentions, for example, stating that the diologue-heavy Mallrats was the best introduction to acting he could have.
  • If we don’t see ya again before then, have a HAPPY EASTER! Send all your unwanted chocolate bunnies here. Later, folks.

New Kevin Q&A Review w/Quotes!

April 16th @ 11:30 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • This new article from Film Radar goes into much greater detail regarding some of the answers given at the Arclight theater Q&A held earlier this month. These basically appear to be almost complete transcripts of what was said, so if you’d like to read Kevin’s words rather than just a summary, this article’s for you. Here’s a few highlights:
What’s up with Vulgarthon?

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Vulgarthon, it’s a film festival we’ve held in Red Bank, New Jersey for the past three years. We’ll screen DOGMA and other films of mine alongside films that have not yet been given wide distribution. It’s nice because it lets some of these smaller films get seen and fans of the older films can see those in a theater with those involved in the filmmaking process.

I’ve been thinking of moving it here, but you can only imagine the shitstorm I created with that idea. I can’t tell you how many times in my career I’ve been called a sellout, but moving anything from New Jersey for me brands me a sellout of the worst sort. My e-mail is flooded with slogans of “Jersey Represent.”

I just figured it would be nice to actually have some of the stars of the movies show up, and having it here might make that a little easier. I know it’ll be easier to get Ben to show up if I have it here. Hell, it’s tough enough to get him out of the house at all these days considering he’s, you know, fucking… I think the next one will be here though.

Now that JERSEY GIRL is almost finished, what are you thinking about next?

Every time I work on a project, people ask me what’s next. This is really one of the first times I don’t have anything specific in mind. Again if I could do the FLETCH project with Lee I’d be all about that and there is the CLERKS cartoon, but the other two projects I’ve been tossing around are each very distinct. One is sort of a sci-fi romance I’ve been toying around with for a long time. The other would be a remake of this amazingly bad movie from the seventies, starring Peter Fonda and Loretta Switt RACE WITH THE DEVIL. I’m obsessed with the title, and it’s about these two couples that go out in their Winnebago to do some camping, and stumble across a satanic ritual. When they are discovered, the cult chases them and they spend the rest of the movie, you guessed it, racing with the devil. Of course, I pitched it to Bob Weinstein because it’s this great slasher flick and I figured it would be right up his alley, and he just thought it was a terrible idea. He didn’t even like the name, pointing out that they’re not really racing with the Devil but from him. Turns out someone actually already has the rights, so I’m even less excited about it now.

  • As he promised, Jason Lee’s Foundation for the Arts website is back up and running with some new information regarding future plans.
  • Yep, as expected, looks like Kevin made it into the extras of the upcoming Daredevil DVD release. This comes to us from DVDFile :
… it does include a great documentary on the legacy of the Daredevil comic that is a standout. “The Men Without Fear: Creating Daredevil” runs 56-minutes and even includes its own chapter stops. Interviewed are many Marvel luminaries, including Stan Lee, John Romita and John Romita, Jr., Frank Miller, Gene Colan, Joe Quesada, David Mack, Brian Michael Bendis and longtime comic champion Kevin Smith.

  • Issue #16 of Metal Rules Magazine has a “Jason” theme, which includes a brand new, eight page candid interview, along with photos, of View Askew’s most famous Jason…Mewes. Pick it up at a store near you, or order it directly from the website.
  • Some astute viewers caught a Buddy Christ in a game options screen in the latest edition of Real Life Comics. Another online comic, Fish Strips, also throws in an Askew
    reference today.

  • And finally today, look who stopped by the Stash! None other that Dante himself, Mr. O’Halloran. Check out these shots of him mugging for the camera (and promoting a cherished piece of View Askew merchandise). Catch ya next time!

  • Ming has Sunday night’s Simpsons “Silent Bob” clip online in both Quicktime and Windows Media versions, in case ya missed it.
  • Antony Teofilo’s interview with Jersey Girl’s legendary cinematographer, Vilmos Zsigmond, is up in this week’s Renaissance Man column over at the ‘Shoot. Here’s a clip:
AT: After viewing a rough cut of the movie, I was struck by how much the camera moves around. Kevin Smith’s films have, for the most part, been very stationary. JERSEY GIRL changes that.

VZ: It probably comes out that way, but I think this story requires a certain visual treatment. When you have a moving story like JERSEY GIRL, it gives you the opportunity to create some moving shots. I don’t move the camera just to move it. I don’t push in to a character until that’s required by the story. A dolly move should mean something. It should emphasize the storyline. I don’t think we have a lot of camera moves in this movie. I think sometimes we have some nice camera moves, and people will probably notice that, but [when we move the camera] it always relies on the story.

  • The Buddy Christ dashboard statue made a cameo on The Discovery Channel’s “Monster Garage” show on Monday night.

  • It’s multimedia time! Click the thumbnails above for a fan with Brian at his recent Phoenix appearance, a nice photo of that unique street in London, and finally, a spoiler shot of Jason Lee in “Dreamcatcher” (only click if you don’t mind the spoilage!).
  • And finally today, there’s one EVERY year! Our favorite bits:
“Because of the bunny suit, (the victim) didn’t get hurt, but it was unusual to get hit this way,” police officer Chang Lee wrote in a report of Saturday’s incident.

The 29-year-old Easter Bunny, Travis Peterson, described the assault in an interview Monday with the Wausau Daily Herald.

“I was just sitting there in my chair, waving to the kids, and he came up and jumped in my lap and just started hitting my head,” Peterson said. “Little fragments of (paint from) the bunny’s eye got into my eye, and it’s kind of irritating right now.”

“Silent Bob” Reference In Tonight’s Simpsons!

  • Tonight’s new episode of “The Simpsons”, titled “Three Gays of the Condo”, features a View Askew reference. At the beginning of the show, the family is working on a jigsaw puzzle. After they finish it, Homer says “This puzzle is the only worthwhile thing I ever made in my life, except for Lisa” (classic Homer!). Then, Maggie shoots Homer a look and he says, “Prove me wrong, Silent Bob!”. Check out the episode on your local FOX station tonight. The Simpsons remains, consistently, the funniest show on television.

Kevin To Appear At WizardWorld East: Philly!

April 13th @ 11:27 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Jason Reichert, Karla

  • Kevin will appear for the second consecutive year at the WizardWorld East convention in Philadelphia, running from May 30th through June 1st. Those of you who attended last year know that Kevin spent hours signing tons of stuff, did 2 memorable Q&A sessions, and more. Wizard Universe had the announcement. Kevin says:
“Having spent the latter half of last year in Philly shooting Jersey Girl, I fell in love with the city (in a strictly hetero way). Can’t wait to go back. Couple that with the fact that it’s for a Wizard show and I may just fall in love with the city all over again (in a non-hetero way).””

Kevin’s event schedule will be announced soon, and we’ll have all those details right here. The guest list for this year is again very, very impressive. Check the whole thing out HERE. As you know it’s local for us, so we’ll look forward to seeing some of you there.

  • What’s new with Jason Lee? He tells us himself via this recent View Askew WWWBoard post:
Been a while. Just stopping by to say hi. Haven’t found any decent work yet. Well, truth be told, I haven’t been asked to be in any good movies. Auditioned for Martin, or should I say “Marty” Scorsese recently (well, I actually auditioned for a video camera while the casting director read lines with me) but I didn’t get the part. Met with David Fincher on “Dogtown and Z Boys”. That could be cool. I guess skateboarding really is getting big. Been skateboarding again (gotta burn off my gut). It’s been fun. Fuck, I’m rusty as hell. Still got some of it in me but it would take a long, long time to “get it back”, as they say. Almost done with my script (12 in years in the making) and my production company is finally getting started. Should be great getting my first film as a director made under my own production company. I’ve wanted this for many many years. We’ll see how it all unfolds.

Hmm, let’s see… what else? Oh, Chris Pastras and I are going to be re-releasing Stereo skateboards and possibly clothes again. Shhh, don’t tell anyone. Anyway, we’ve been meeting with skateboard distribution companies to find the right one to work with. Should be interesting to see how well it does in the now more mainstream world of skateboarding. Been working in the darkroom lately. Almost everyday, and for as much as 8 hours at a time. Should have everything printed for my first exhibition in about 8-12 months (it’s a long and arduous process). Blah, blah, blah. Hope all is well out there. Be back soon…

Lee is also mentioned in the new issue (#57) of “Strangers in Paradise” by Abstract comics. A fan writes in and says that in a movie version of the comic, Jason Lee should play the character David.

  • The April 2003 issue of AMERICAN LIBRARIES (The Magazine of the American Library Association) quotes Kevin in their regular “Thus Said: How the World Sees Us” feature on page 32:
“Although, with all the devil worship, child endangerment, prostitution, violence, and innuendo in Quiver, it’s kinda funny that they named us one of the Best Books for Young Adults. Perhaps they meant one of the best books for adult film actors. However, if the ALA knew how late I was on Target and The Evil Men Do, they’d not only take Quiver off their list, they’d rip up my library card.” Director and writer KEVIN SMITH on Green Arrow: Quiver, his collection of 10 issues of the Green Arrow comic book, being named to the Young Adult Library Services Association’s Best Books for Young Adults 2003, Newsarama.com, February 6.
  • The historic Byrd Theatre in Richmond, VA is having another Mallrats showing for their Saturday midnight movie on May 3rd.
  • A piece of View Askew fan art we keep getting e-mail about appears at White Ninja Comics. We’re not sure we get it, but we figured we’d give it a mention.
  • And speaking of web comics, Jay appears again in the latest Combustible Orange.
  • We think this one’s a rumor gone crazy, but we’re getting a lot of mail about it, so figured we’d at least run the story. Sky News is reporting that Ben & Jen want to remake Casablanca for their next film together after “Jersey Girl”. We have our sincerest doubts (sounds like a crazier idea than the Psycho remake, even), but here ya go:
PLAY IT AGAIN J.LO

Hollywood couple J.Lo and Ben Affleck have secured a deal to remake the classic movie Casablanca, according to reports.

The pair are said to be delighted with the multi-million pound deal and are now in talks wirth American producers.

The original film was a hit in 1942 starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

Affleck will take the romantic lead as Rick, the Daily Star reports.
Lopez will play the former lover who had jilted him but comes back into his later life – married to a French resistance leader.

Actor Ben is reportedly a big fan of old movies and the project will give him a chance to indulge his passion.

It will not be the first time the two have appeared on screen together – they recently starred in the hit romance Jersey Girl.

A friend said: “They are overjoyed at the propspect of being in Casablanca together.

“It is the chance for them to show how much they love each other through their on-screen chemistry.”

Last Minute News: O’Halloran Appearance…

April 11th @ 5:45 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brandon Huigens

  • Not sure how we didn’t know about this one sooner, especially considering one of us was just hanging with the guy last week (though the alcohol might have wiped away the memory of thsi info), but hopefully some of you will still make it: We’ve just gotten word that Brian O’Halloran is making an appearance in Phoenix, Arizona at a place called Samurai Comics. He’ll be talking with fans, signing autographs, etc.

Then, later tonight, as part of the 2003 Phoenix Film Festival, he’ll host a screening of “Clerks” at 10:30 PM. This all happens TONIGHT apparently, though we haven’t had much time to check into it. We just wanted to get this news out ASAP if it’s indeed happening, in the hopes some readers might catch Brian. Enjoy.

Jersey Girl In Newsweek!

April 10th @ 11:09 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Bill Minter, Laura Schaffroth

  • Sure, it’s due to the continued controversy (Hey, View Askew can’t have a flick without it, ya know!), but Jersey Girl scored a nice mention in the April 14th issue of this Newsweek article that we’ve copied in its entirety for ya below (you can also see scans of how it appears in the mag itself above):
Hollywood: Are Two J-Fleck Movies Too Many?

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck will costar in two movies this year scheduled to be released just three months apart

NEWSWEEK, April 14 issue — Just in case you need more of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck in your life, the couple will costar in two moviesthis year. Unfortunately, they’re scheduled to be released just three months apart, begging the obvious questions: Can they both make a profit? And is either any good?

AFFLECK AND LOPEZ fell in love last year while making “Gigli,” a dramatic comedy about gangsters. Directed by Martin Brest (whose previous outing, “Meet Joe Black,” flopped), the $54 million film began suffering from negative buzz last fall after test-screening audiences hated the ending, in which Affleck’s character (pronounced Jee-lee) died. Revolution Studios, which financed the film, forked over about $1 million for a three-day reshoot. Last week a test screening of the new version inspired a scathing review on the Ain’t It Cool News Web site—and a heated moment between Brest and Revolution head Joe Roth over the pace of the movie’s final 25 minutes. After a three-day standoff, Brest headed back to the editing room to tighten the final segment.

Meanwhile, Affleck and Lopez’s other project, the romantic drama “Jersey Girl,” had been basking in good early buzz. This sparked speculation that its director, Kevin Smith, had somehow planted the Ain’t It Cool review as sabotage. Those close to both projects describe this theory as “paranoid” and “ridiculous.” (Smith has been a close friend of Affleck’s since the two made “Chasing Amy” years ago, and even helped Affleck and Matt Damon get their “Good Will Hunting” script into Miramax’s hands.) What’s more, the fates of “Gigli” and “Jersey Girl” are actually tied together—if audiences balk at the first flick this summer, they may boycott the second film come fall. Revolution contends that “Gigli” will be vindicated. “The picture will speak for itself,” says executive Tom Sherak. “This is a really smart summer movie. It’s not a fastball down the middle. It’s not ‘The Hulk.’ It’s a curveball.” Here’s hoping it’s over the plate.

Always great to get some early buzz out there. Good stuff for JG!
