  • Seems that several other sources are reporting a SEPTEMBER 14th release date for the initial release of Jersey Girl on DVD. Nothing official has been set yet, but from past history, normally when we’ve seen these sources set a date, it’s correct. Remember, this is a very stripped-down DVD, with the full blown View Askew special edition, packed full of extras and an extended cut of the film, coming later on down the road.

  • Even though Kevin missed attending Wizard World Philly this year, we hope you made it in — Brian O’Halloran yet again graciously appeared at the View Askew booth, unannounced, and spent a bunch of time chatting with fans, taking photos, and signing all your stuff. See that? Ya never know what might happen when View Askew’s in the house!
  • We’re hearing that some PBS stations might be re-running Kevin’s appearance on Tavis Smiley’s talk show on or around June 5th. No details have been listed, so we can only assume this isn’t a new booking. Check the site or your local listings.
  • Here’s a bit of sad news. Apparently a movie theater in Canada, which was re-opened by a Jersey Girl extra excited to screen the film there, burnt down just after JG had its run there. Details at the site.
  • Empire Online’s “Six of the Best” celebrates six great cinematic moments of swearing, and a clip from “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” makes the cut. If you’ve yet to see it for some crazy reason, the Planes, Trains, and Automobiles clip there is also a must-watch. The same site’s “Son of Quote” quizzes also bring up some classic View Askew phrases.
  • Underground Online does a weekly “Top 11” list, naming the “best of” in whatever category they’re tackling. Last week, the subject was “Top 11 Best Written Sequels”. Coming in at a very respectable #8 was Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. Here’s what the writer, Vince Yim, had to say:
8: “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” by Kevin Smith

Technically, this isn’t a sequel in the largest sense, more of a spin-off, as the two titular characters aren’t really the focus characters in the previous flicks from Kevin Smith’s View Askew-niverse. They started out as two pot dealers that hung around a convenience store back in Clerks, and then their role was slowly expanded in the subsequent films (that, and Silent Bob started talking a lot more).

While Jay and Silent Bob were central characters in the previous Kevin Smith film, Dogma, J&SBSB is not a continuation of the storyline (although Alanis Morisette does her short cameo appearance after the credits), and instead features short appearances by the characters of the first three Kevin Smith flicks, Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy.

As a stand-alone flick, it is well written. Dialogue is spot on, like anything else from Kevin Smith. The jokes all work (admittedly, most of them are pop culture reference based, so if you don’t get the reference, you won’t get the joke) and everyone involved is more than willing to poke fun at themselves (one particular nudge has director Gus Van Sant counting a massive pile of cash while “directing” on the set of “Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season”).

TalkBacks Return!

May 24th @ 11:00 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Well, we’ve finally got the bugs (we hope) worked out of the new Talkback system upgrade. Most of the stuff is behind the scenes, but
with the latest version of the software, it’ll be less buggy and more efficient overall. Plus, it’s giving us a lot more control of things behind the
scenes, as well. There’s still a few visual enhancements and changes that are needed, but all your accounts and posting ability should be active again.
    Have at it!

  • Jake Gyllenhaal was interviewed by the Toronto Sun and the piece had this to say about Green Hornet:
Kevin Smith did talk to Gyllenhaal about playing the Green Hornet.

“I don’t think that movie is going to happen any time soon any more, but there was talk and I am interested.”

  • A guy who appeared for just a few seconds as an extra in JERSEY GIRL is moving towards bigger things with a new short film and production company being Promoted in the Jersey/Philly area. Read all about it at NJ.com.
  • On Wizard’s Philly website, they’ve posted some of the highlights from the Eliza Dushku Q&A over the weekend, including details of her first meeting with Mewes:
How was it working with Jason Mewes for the first time [in Jay and Bob’s Strikes back]?

Yeah, the first time i met Jason, i was in my cat suit (from the movie) and I went up to him and we were talking about both being from the East Coast and he’s like,”Hey, I’m Jason nice to meet you – good rack.”

Check them all out HERE.

More From Kevin!

  • Here’s a few more interesting tidbits directly from Kevin:
  • On the Jersey Girl DVD release: “I’ve heard August 25th, but don’t quote me on that. Could be Sept/Oct too.

Being that Miramax is rushing it, we didn’t have time to re-assemble the longer cut and clear the music rights for the cut material. So there will be two “Jersey Girl” releases. The first release is the theatrical cut, with extras that include one or two commentary tracks (we’re not sure yet), some behind-the-scenes shorts (which you probably saw on Starz or Bravo), and five “Roadside Attractions” (yeah, I know – what does “Roadside Attractions” have to do with “Jersey Girl”? I don’t know; ask Harvey).

The next release (probably a year or so down the road) will be the first cut of the movie, with more Ollie/Gertrude background and whatnot, as well as all the music that we cut out or replaced. Don’t know what kind of extras will be on it just yet, but we’ll try to pack it, as per usual. “

  • The special figure likely to appear at cons this year from the Dogma set? A variation of the Golgothan. Sadly, the proposed God and
Metatron figs won’t be ready in time.
  • We’re likely to see t-shirts featuring that pretty new View Askew logo soon.
  • If Kevin made a ton of money on Green Hornet, he’d love to try and persuade Miramax into letting him use Jason Lee as Fletch.

That’s it for now! Keep watching the View Askew Board for your chance to ask Kevin any question your heart desires.

Jersey Girl DVD Covers!

  • You read Kevin’s update about the disc above, now take a look at some of the proposed covers floating around! The studio’s in the
process of deciding on one, and chances are the movie-only edition will look like one of the above. With the special edition DVD a year or so off, we’re
sure they’ll come up with something new for the cover. So, take a look, click the above images for a larger version. We’ll keep you informed of any other
    JG-related DVD news we’ve got!

  • A Clerks re-enactment makes it into the latest edition of “Good Scenes Gone Bad” at the silly, but fun Liquid Generation site, full of some of the goofiest Flash and Shockwave games on the web.
  • According to popular film site Dark Horizons, Harvey Weinstein has stated that Fletch Won is on the slate for next year and that Kevin remains attached to direct.
  • Here’s a brief write-up from another attendee of Kev’s WGA appearance a week or so back:
I paid $20 for my ticket and battled traffic to get the event on time. I thought the event rocked! Smith was in his usual hilarious form, and I’d seen him speak at comic-con a few times – so it wasn’t like I’d never seen the guy. I paid to go to a writer’s event hosted by the WGA, and really, I got my money’s worth. The MC and Kevin got along great onstage – not sure what the previous reviewer was talking about one of them being “annoyed” at the other. The questions were really old-school styled, a lot about breaking in as a writer/director- something I’m trying to do. The MC did a great job of keeping the conversation focused on writing, which was exactly what I’d hoped the night would be about. Then when they opened up to the audience for questions, all kinds of fun fan questions rolled in. At that point, it was just like every other Kevin Smith event I’d been to – awesome Smith rants based on fan questions. An even balance if you ask me. Smith rocked. The MC solid kept writing as the focus while always being respectful to Kevin. I heard stories told I’ve never heard before.
  • Kevin is mentioned in an article about movies that are morden “instant classics”, because of the director in the Canberra Times, the newspaper of Australia’s capital:
“Indeed, it’s the entire story of a generation – the 70s group of Coppola, Lucus, Friedkin, Bogdanovich, de Palma and to a lesser extent Scorsese.

Now that the 90’s indie generation of Soderbergh, Lee, Tarentino, Smith, the Andersons and Linklater have about a decade or more behind them, it’s interesting to conjecture whether their best films actually are still ahead. By their third cinema release, their body of work already included Sex, Lies and Videotape, Do the Right Thing, Pulp Fiction, Chasing Amy, Boogie Nights, Rushmore and Slacker.

Then the article finishes with a list of the five best DVD Commentaries:

1 Boogie Nights
2 The Ususal Suspects
3 Any Kevin Smith Film (Smith’s biplay with “Bender” Affleck on Dogma and Chasing Amy is priceless.)
4 El Mariachi
5 This is Spinal Tap

  • And on a final note today: Send your good thoughts over to a member of the extended View Askew family, Soul Asylum’s Karl Mueller, who is undergoing treatment for throat cancer. The band’s been a friend of View Askew since the Clerks days, and we wish him well.

Talkbacks Down…Go Flyers!

May 21st @ 2:07 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Due to some strange technical difficulties, our TalkBack system went south last night…However, we’ve got all the data backed up so there shouldn’t be a problem having it all restored again this weekend. We’re taking advantage of the downtime to actually perform some upgrades and bug fixes to the system as well, hence the extra downtime. So, that’s why anyone attempting to post or read the talkbacks is seeing an error message. We’ll let you know when they’re back and runnin’.

And one last thing: Even if you’re not a hockey fan, will some good fortune towards the Philadelphia Flyers tomorrow night, who played an amazing game last night to score an overtime win against Tampa Bay, forcing a game 7 for a spot in the finals! GO FLYERS!

  • Journalists seem to just lurk at the ViewAskew WWWBoard these days to try and make stories out of stuff, it seems. Check
out the latest blurb from MSNBC:
Don’t expect Kevin Smith to visit Atlanta anytime soon. The director is still steaming over how some folks in the Georgia capital
criticized his movie “Jersey Girl.” “When I was there, I did a radio show where the crew was all kiss-assy, and then slammed the flick when
I left town. So lame,” Smith wrote on his Web site. “Their excuse was that they can’t get confrontational with guests, lest publicists
refuse to bring cool guests in anymore. How corporate and safe is that? Particularly for the typical zoo-crew that insists they’re cutting
edge and counter-culture?” Smith was so irate about one Atlanta review that he called the critic a name we can’t repeat here, but it has to
do with someone in the world’s oldest profession smoking crack. “So right about now, I’ve got about as much love for Atlanta as it’s [sic]
patron saint, Ted Turner, has for his ex-wife, Jane Fonda.”
  • Kevin gets mentioned in the Washington Times in an
article lamenting Superman’s current place in the culture:
The Marvel Comics heroes have been enjoying a renaissance lately, ringing up huge box office, brought to big-screen life by reverential filmmakers such as Sam Raimi, a self-confessed lifelong Peter Parker fan, and Kevin Smith, with his note-for-note recreation of legendary comics writer and artist Frank Miller’s classic Daredevil stories of the early 1980s.

Sadly, the author doesn’t mention that Kevin did also write a Superman script, as we all know, quite a few years ago, before the big Superhero film renaissance began.

  • Here’s a plug coming from an odd source: McCaulay Culkin. In an interview about his latest movie, “Saved!”, he says the following:
“…They were Fundamentalists saying that Christian rock music is wrong. It was so funny to me that Christians are picketing each other, so what makes us think we can get away with this movie, without someone being offended at least by the outside of it? Remember the movie, “Dogma?” It hadn’t even come out yet and they had hundreds of people picketing and no one had seen it. No
one knew what it was about. Actually, after I saw that movie I was like, “Gosh, I want to pick up a Bible and read this again,” because it was cool. And the same thing with this, from the outside for people who haven’t seen it, we’re dealing with issues like unwed teenage mothers and homosexuality and things like that. From the outside, it could be semi-taboo, you know?…”
  • In case you haven’t noticed, the rare Rene figure is back in stock at the Stash! You can order her
as part of the full set or separately. Take advantage of this rare chance to complete your Mallrats inaction figure set, as we’re not sure
how long this newfound batch of Rene’s is gonna last!
  • Congrats to Dogma’s Alan Rickman, whose death in “Die Hard” was awarded
the honor of being the 4th best death scene in film of all time. Quite an honor, indeed. Catch ya next time!

J&SBSB Hits Comedy Central In July!

May 19th @ 11:13 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Gordon McFarland

  • Yes, it’s finally happened, another View Askew film has been sanitized to the point of making its way to BASIC CABLE! Actually, this
is going to be really interesting, as we recall that on set, special alternate takes of the film were shot JUST for this purpose! That’s right, in July,
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back will hit basic cable, which means ALL that profanity’s gotta go. We’re sure some of it will be dubbed (though hopefully not so
poorly as the fun, but painful TV Mallrats edit), however, the big news is that we will LIKELY see, for the first time, scenes or dialogue that has yet to
see the light of day as none of this was on the DVD. So, this one’s a definite keeper.

So far, the schedule has “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” premiering on 7/5 at 7-9:30 PM EST as a part of their July 4th movie stunt. It
will also repeat that evening at 11:30pm, then again on 7/11 at 1am and at 8pm. “Dogma” will also be appearing on 7/4 at 7:30pm and at 4:30pm on 7/5
directly before J&SBSB. Tune in, even if it’s just to point us out to your friends in our quick, early film cameos, as our friends and families always
enjoy doing.
