Commentary: Slowness & Archives!

  • Just a quick reminder folks — We’re sharing server bandwidth with the Clerks II website, which is just getting hammered today, due to the film’s release, Myspace promotions, and all the new Train Wreck movies. So, please bear with us as loading times are just going to be a bit slow today.

Also, let us remind you, updates have been going on SO frequently this week, in fact, easily a new record for the most news EVER for this site in the past two weeks, that some stories may drop right into the archives before you’ve even seen then. Please visit the archives area for July via the link in the left sidebar, or at the very bottom of the news page that you’re looking at today. And thanks for continuing to visit us as your official news source for Kevin Smith and View Askew every day.

Clerks II Press: Friday Edition Part 2!

July 22nd @ 12:04 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Steve Bauer, Nick Arkanoff, Judy MacKenzie, Nick Arkanoff, Robb Johnston, Nick Arkanoff

  • We’re still mixing reviews and articles together here — It’s been next to impossible to keep up with every bit of press, so we’re continuing to focus mostly on articles and only SELECT reviews. We urge you to visit the excellent Rotten Tomatoes website to read all of the latest Clerks II reviews (now up to 73% positive at presstime, one of the best we’ve ever seen at the site). Here ya go:
Reuters/AP: “Review: Smith rings up pleasing sequel with Clerks II” (**SPOILERS**)

“…Smith has grown more skilled in shooting and editing his films. Despite a mostly one-set location, “Clerks II” feels anything but static as characters and story flow easily in and around the restaurant and its suburban environment.”

MTV: “Has Kevin Smith Mellowed? Clerks II Will Tell.” (**SPOILERS**)

“…Let me tell you something,” Smith retorted. “I was born on a Friday, but it wasn’t last Friday. Rosario has had that chest for a long time now. I can’t imagine that she gets there and she’s like, ‘I had no idea that if I jumped, they would jump as well! I remember shooting that scene,” he continued, attempting to set the record straight. “She was looking at playback on the rooftop, and she was like, ‘The girls are movin’!’ They are hers, right? I mean, we’re supposed to believe they’ve never moved before?”

Film Blather: “Review: Clerks II” (**SPOILERS**)

“…Part of the reason the humor works so often and so well is that the characters work: we really believe, for one thing, that these are the people from Clerks some twelve years after the events of that film, working at a fast-food joint instead of a convenience store and a video store.”

Orange County Register: “Kevin Smith: Back to Jersey”

“… It doesn’t get any more real than seeing two dudes who have aged 12 years. You can’t hide the age. You can’t hide the paunch. These dudes are old. But there’s something nice about a warts-and-all look at aging like that. And I thought it would be fascinating to look at the angry young man when he hits his mid 30s.”

WIBC: “Clerks II – Plus The Wikel Boys’ Interview With Stars Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson”

“…It doesn’t get any more real than seeing two dudes who have aged 12 years. You can’t hide the age. You can’t hide the paunch. These dudes are old. But there’s something nice about a warts-and-all look at aging like that. And I thought it would be fascinating to look at the angry young man when he hits his mid 30s.”

Ain’t It Cool News: “Capone Relishes The Romance And “Vomit Inducing Acts” Of CLERKS II” (**SPOILERS**)

“…Clerks II is loaded with equal parts charm and rude (but damn funny) antics. Perhaps for the first time in his career, Smith has given us something for everyone, without going too much in any direction. The film manages to give us romance and vomit-inducing acts, sometimes simultaneously.”

  • A word for word translation of this morning’s Joel Siegel review segment on GMA, FYI:
“Four movies, Joel actually saw three of them.” Joel – “Full disclosure, I walked out of the first movie I intended to review in almost 30 years. The movie was ‘Clerks II’. I made it through the first 40 minutes. It got so gross I couldn’t take any more. I stood up, said ‘that’s it’, and walked out. I can’t recommend ‘Clerks II’ — at least not the first 40 minutes.”

Box Office: What To Expect?

July 21st @ 11:53 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Clerks II is now open nationwide, so many folks here at View Askew, as well as fans, are wondering: How much will the movie make this weekend? There’s a few facts to consider here. First off, we’re opening up against three other rather high profile films this weekend: Monster House, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, and Lady in the Water. None of those other three have been enjoying as positive reviews as Clerks II, however, all three ARE opening on more screens (”Lady” being tracking best for box office, though the harshest reviewed of the bunch). There’s also the Pirates and Superman factors to compete with — Both flicks are still out there, with Pirates continuing to do decent business. So where will we land? It’s tough to say, really — However, with a $5 million budget, plus advertising, the film’s poised to go into the black this weekend no matter what. In fact, Kevin revealed that foreign distribution rights have ALREADY put the film in the black, with those rights sold for more than the film’s budget, even before it was released.

REVIEWS: At presstime, Clerks II is tracking WAY better than any film opening this weekend at review supersite Rotten Tomatoes where it’s enjoying a 72% FRESH rating! Be sure to hit that site for all the reviews you can stomach, as we’re sticking mostly with press here and just a couple select reviews.

Here’s Variety’s tracking report on Clerks II:

“Clerks II,” which MGM is distributing for the Weinstein Co., hits 2,150 playdates and will likely appeal to writer-director Kevin Smith’s core male aud. His biggest previous opening was the $11 million for “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” on its first weekend in 2001. “Clerks II” bow will likely be close to that.

So hey, with Variety saying that, even if we make the projection, it’s over DOUBLE the budget of the flick. Not bad at all, eh? More than can be said for Superman’s opening weekend, that’s for sure. But hey, let’s prove them wrong — Get out there with everyone, spread the word, and let’s sell these theaters out! Let’s crack that J&SBSB opening weekend, and march towards View Askew box office history this weekend. Clerks II, now playing everywhere!!!

Clerks II Press: Friday Edition

July 21st @ 11:49 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Gareth, Kevin Spellman, Brandon Angelilli, Jon Rich, Alex Stevens

  • This will likely be the last day for the big Clerks II stories, as we’re expecting most agencies who haven’t already got their info out to release their stories today. So, enjoy them while ya can. Here’s the first batch of today’s press and reviews:
New York Magazine: “The Man With 50,000 Friends”

“…Smith’s newest addiction is MySpace: I’ve been on since March and I’m closing in on 50,000 friends. So I feel like, Wow, that’s kind of cool.” The Weinstein Co. hatched a plan to promote Clerks II by putting the names of the film’s first 10,000 MySpace friends in the credits. They thought the contest would go for weeks. They had the names in two hours.”

Core Entertainment: “‘Clerks II’ delivers a foul-mouthed film about friendship”

“…Yet just when Clerks II is on the verge of going too far with either the love of lewd language or wallowing in pop culture references, Smith shows his maturity both as a filmmaker and writer by allowing his characters to show real emotion behind their Gen-X disguises.”

Hendersonville News: “Media for the masses from Silent Bob”

“…A third of my day is online either posting on the boards, on myspace or just answering e-mail,” the 35-year-old widely accessible author said during the recent press junket for Clerks II, the sequel to his 1994 independent breakout film which he shot at the convenience store where he once worked. “I’m the kinda guy you just can’t escape. Anyone that has an interest in my stuff, I’m happy to speak to and that’s perfect for the Internet because I’ve watched that audience grow over time.”

Canada.Com: “‘Silent Bob’ profane yet sentimental” (**SPOILERS**)

“…I think about Jersey Girl and Clerks II, and to me they’re both equally sentimental movies.”

Skewed & Reviewed: “Clerks II” (**SPOILERS**)

“…A true classic and easily the best film Kevin Smith has ever done. Do not miss this film.”

San Diego Citybeat: “An Inconvenience Store Truth”

“…I found that Kevin was more willing and more apt to let us stray from the script this time,” says Anderson, who has the bulk of the movie’s hair-trigger jokes against O’Halloran’s straight man. “Whereas the first one, for me personally, I wasn’t an actor, and I stuck right to the script and that’s the way Kevin preferred it anyway. This one, I just found him much more laid back and willing to deviate a little bit, to kind of have more fun with it.”

Train Wreck: The Final Segments???

July 21st @ 11:48 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

“In The Caboose – The Last Train Wreck”

“My Marbles – by Jason Mewes”

“The Red Carpet”
  • Could these be the final three editions of “Train Wreck”, the online Clerks II video diary? We’re not sure, though if they indeed are, they sure did go out with an obscene bang!

First up, posted earlier this week, walk THE RED CARPET with all of your favorite Clerks II personalities. Zak and Joey were there to cover the big Clerks II premiere earlier this month at the Arclight in Los Angeles.

Next, we get into NSFW (Not Safe For Work) territory — Yep, you may wanna do a quick boss check or wait until you’re home to view the next two vids: First up, Jason Mewes has been known for not being shy when it comes to nudity…And in the clip “My Marbles” you’ll see just how true that myth is. Jason himself edited this ode to a favorite body part of his. It’s the first clip he’s ever edited.

Finally, “In The Caboose – The Last Train Wreck” Kevin and Jay remind you that Clerks II is indeed in theaters today, and thanks you all for watching Train Wreck this year. It’s also NSFW, due to some Mewes antics.

We’ve fallen in love with the Train Wreck series so much that it’s odd to see that it could soon be ending. Like a good friend, it’s been there for us week after week. We’ll hope that perhaps a few more segments will get clipped together for the web (or perhaps some DVD-Only segments will be in order). At any rate, we thank Zak and Joey for an amazing job, congratulate Zak on his hilarious turn in Clerks II, and wish them well in their continuing projects. Long live “Train Wreck”, on the net, DVD, and beyond!

  • Bulletproof Entertainment (the fine folks putting out the Clerks II soundtrack) have announced a competition! They want you to cut together a music video for the song “Think Fast” (by All Too Much) (using Clerks II footage if you like). The winning video will actually appear on the Clerks II DVD! The two runner-ups will receive a copy of the “Clerks II” soundtrack and a Kevin Smith signed poster from the film.

To enter the contest, simply download the song from the film’s website www.clerks2.com or from www.bulletproofrecords.com between July 14 and July 31. Then, use your skills to make the coolest music video on the planet.
