Clerks II In Austin: Full Coverage!

July 14th @ 9:44 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Aaron Haley, Eric Young

  • It was a big night in Austin, Texas last night, as Clerks II took the city by force with a packed screening for the Austin Film Society. First off, we’re very pleased to have some nice photos from Matt Wright, staffer of Austinist.com.

Also, scooper Eric gives us a nice, non-spoiler summary of some fun facts from the night and the Q&A

– John Pierson was in attendance.
– Kevin quoted as saying as an intro “One of the gayest straight movies ever made”
– No myspace titles were in this print yet.
– Afterwards, there was a standing ovation to which Kevin replied “Sit down, it’s been done.”
– Kevin was happy that any Superman movie was made and that Singer made the movie he wanted to, which is cool.
– “It’s easy to Jedi Mind Trick Ben Affleck”
– “It’s weird when Mewes outwits you”
– In response to a question about filming in Austin, he said that if he ever gets around to doing “Ranger Danger” and needs green screens, he may film in Austin.
– He gave away some door prizes: 2 signed posters, a Clerks 2 t-shirt, a set of the new poker cards, and 2 copies of Richard Kelly’s “Southland Tales” comic.
– He Auctioned off ELIAS’S SCREEN WORN APRON – Someone shouted out opening bid of $200, the item finally went for $750 (to benefit the Austin Film Society). A bargain for a lucky fan!
– He is driving to Dallas tonight (7/13).

If you were there, and have more to add, let’s hear it! Talk Back or drop us a line!

Kevin Meets “CripBoy” In Austin!

July 14th @ 9:44 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by E. Christopher, Ross Hobbie, Ian Muttoo, M&S

  • Fabled AICN webmaster Harry Knowles is calling a moment from last night’s Austin Clerks II Q&A the “Greatest Moment in Q&A History” according to this story he just posted at his widely-read website. And you know what? It just may very well be (and we hope Harry doesn’t mind us archiving this here). Read on, here’s Harry:
Kevin Smith Vs CripBoy…. The Greatest Moment In Q&A History!!!

Hey folks, Harry here… Nothing I can say or write could possibly convey the awesome fucking exchange between Kevin Smith and CripBoy. You see… Last night here in Austin, Kevin Smith was in town to do what Kevin Smith does in Austin. Premiere a film of his and then geek with the audience for a few hours afterwards. Now – I’ve already reviewed CLERKS 2 – having seen it about 3-4 weeks ago, but I should add that seeing it with a sold out crowd of frothing at the mouth Askewers is about movie theater heaven – except… you’ll miss about 45% of the dialogue due to riotus laughter.

Anyways… I’m not here to talk CLERKS 2 – but to talk about an epic battle between Kevin Smith and CripBoy. The Q&A started pretty much as expected – an abnormally towering geek standing up to extract from Kevin, his opinion upon SUPERMAN RETURNS. In a nutshell – Kevin preferred X-MEN 3. And – as punishment for that insanity – delivered upon Kevin Smith was… CripBoy.

First off… “CripBoy” is a hilarious local eccentric that audiences familiar with the Alamo Drafthouse may remember from the President Clinton ambush that he pulled to try and extract from President Clinton a “Please don’t Talk During The Movies” executive order. If you’ve seen this Drafthouse Spot – then you’ve laughed pretty darn hard. His handicap seems to be something akin to Muscular Dystrophy, thus making it difficult… well to do much of anything. However, “CripBoy” as Kevin annointed him would not be stopped!

Kevin finishes up talking about geeking out in a tux at the Cannes premiere of X3, and then notices this nice man in the electric wheelchair at stage left trying to get Kevin’s attention so he could ask a question. He looks at him to acknowledge that he wanted to hear his question…. and so he did…

“What the fuck was all that CRIP BOY bullshit at the beginning?”

It was… Kevin had this look on his face – as the tears raced down his cheeks… He grabbed his face and nearly fell to his knees laughing. In fact – he turned away from his questioneer – to try and compose himself. This was one of those zingers that he just, for the life of him, didn’t see coming. In fact – Kevin stated that “I didn’t see that coming. It’s not like I walked over thinking, “Oh Fuck, Crip Boy!”

Well – “Crip Boy” wasn’t through – he had a real question for Kevin – but it had about 8 minutes of story leading up to it. You see – “Crip Boy” when he was younger – loved Kevin’s second film, MALLRATS. He recounted the nightmare that was the release and the years upon years it took to finally be accepted – much to Kevin’s chagrin… and he said that he remembered that when he first saw MALLRATS all those years ago… he had one question and one question only that he’d ask Kevin Smith – if ever they were to speak.

At this point – Kevin laid down on his belly right in front of “Crip Boy” placing the microphone between the two as this photograph from Gary Miller shows…

Kevin states, “Now you’ve really built up this question, this had better be one fucking genius of a question.”

“Crip Boy” continues – letting Kevin know that it’s probably not a genius question, but he has to ask it… that he must know the answer.

“Kevin, you’re the writer & director of MALLRATS – You have Claire Forlani in your film, and you couldn’t be bothered to write one scene where she takes her shirt off?”

Again – Kevin is paralyzed with laughter. Literally rolling on the stage to get back to his feet. The whole time – trying desperately to compose himself. “He’s got a point. He’s right.”

The exchange continued – Kevin said he wanted to hire Crip Boy to take on tour with him. Said that he’s right on the same level of brilliant existence as Mewes. “Crip Boy” seizing the opportunity made a play to be in CLERKS 3, which Kevin quickly subtitled, “REVENGE OF CRIP BOY” – and “Crip Boy” responds, “We’re BACK & We’re PISSED!”

I’m sure I missed big chunks of the conversation – due to the laughter of the theater and my own trying to compose myself. It was – genius. It is just something – I had to share…

We certainly wish we could have seen this, but trust us — Great stuff like this happens at practically EVERY Kevin Smith Q&A session. If you haven’t been out to see Kevin live yet, you just don’t know at all what you’re missing. Next time he’s in your area, don’t even hesitate to grab some tickets. We could tell you tales like this for hours, and they’re all priceless.

Every Single MySpace Member Who Adds the ‘Mooby’s Presents: Clerks II’ Page to Their Friends List Will Have Their Name Added to the Ending Credits on the DVD of the Highly Anticipated Release of ‘Clerks II’

NEW YORK, July 13 /PRNewswire/ — After the recent promotion where 10,000 MySpace members added the “Mooby’s Presents: Clerks II” to their friends list in under three hours, The Weinstein Company announced today that beginning tomorrow July 14, any and all MySpace members, no matter how many, who add that same page to their friends list will also have their names permanently listed in the ending credits on the DVD of the highly anticipated release of “Clerks II.” “Clerks II” is the sequel to Kevin Smith’s (”Chasing Amy,” “Dogma,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”) 1994 Sundance hit “Clerks” and again stars the hilarious foursome including Dante Hicks (BRIAN O’HALLORAN), Randal Graves (JEFF ANDERSON), Jay (JASON MEWES) and Silent Bob (KEVIN SMITH), and their new sexy manager Becky Scott (ROSARIO DAWSON). “Clerks II” is a Weinstein Company presentation that will be distributed in theaters nationwide on July 21, 2006 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM). Genius Products, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: GNPI) will distribute the “Clerks II” DVD.

ABOUT CLERKS II

Ten years ago, best friends Dante Hicks (BRIAN O’HALLORAN) and Randal Graves (JEFF ANDERSON) were New Jersey mini-mall clerks slacking off together in their early 20s. Now, Kevin Smith checks back in to see what kind of changes have rocked their lives — in work, romance and their eternally raucous life philosophy. What he discovers is that never before have so many, still done so little while having so much fun doing it. Now working in the fast-food universe at Mooby’s, Dante and Randal have managed to maintain, and even hone, their in-your-face attitudes, agile skill with vulgarities and unbridled love of screwing with the customers. But they’re also faced with such shocking new prospects as marriage, leaving Jersey and finding real careers.

Smith pushes his nothing-is-sacred humor right to the edge and then takes a leap as Dante and Randal invade the world of Mooby’s fast food restaurant, where the slogan is “I’m Eating It.” Behind the counter, where the only other employees are an uber-nerd (TREVOR FERHMAN) and an entirely too sexy manager (ROSARIO DAWSON), Dante and Randal are free to offend anybody and everybody who, so much as orders fries, in their inimitably irreverent way. But, even as riotous debates rage between them over such burning matters as George Lucas v. Peter Jackson v. Jesus, change is on the horizon. When Dante announces that he’s going to leave Jersey forever and marry Emma Bunting (JENNIFER SCHWALBACH), Randal plots a going-away party so shocking it will draw the police, the fire department and potential protests from PETA, while altering their lives forever.

The Weinstein Company and View Askew Productions present “Clerks II,” written and directed by Kevin Smith. Scott Mosier and Smith produced the film, with Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein and Carla Gardini serving as executive producers. The film features cameos by Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, Kevin Weisman (”Alias”) and the comedians Wanda Sykes and Earthquake. It also features the triumphant return of New Jersey’s inimitable duo Jay (JASON MEWES) and Silent Bob (KEVIN SMITH).

39. Silent Bob
Sidekick to: Jay

Is it the weed or divine patience that keeps this portly, man-(of-few-words)-servant mellow enough to stand by the lanky, foul-mouthed, and frequently offensive Jay? With heroic dedication and resolve, Bob endures Jay’s verbal abuse (nicknames like ”fatty,” ”lunchbox,” and ”tons of fun”), selflessly (and wordlessly) dispenses advice with a meaningful nod. And — whether dispatching demons or explaining an esoteric film title — Bob can be counted on to save the day. —Erin Richter

Randy (Ethan Suplee) in “My Name Is Earl” deservedly makes the list as well.

  • GQ magazine recently release a one-page article titled “Ewoks Don’t Leave Tips (And Eight Other Things You Need To Know For This Year’s Comic-Con)”. It gives tips to folks who will be attending the big event in San Diego next weekend, arguably the biggest in the world. Check out number FIVE in the scan here, where they urge you to avoid celebrity speakers with KEVIN SMITH being a notable EXCEPTION! Cool!

  • And hey, while we’re hitting you with scans, check this one out from Playboy Magazine – Sorry for the quality, but you should be able to click and make out the text. Just a few quick questions with Kevin regarding Clerks II, nothing new, but new quotes, and great witty answers as always. Enjoy.
  • Ok, so check THIS OUT – Possibly the coolest cake ever, and a VERY cool girlfriend! Scooper “Stephen” sends us this photo and story today:

“My girlfriend and I have a “cake off” each year for our birthdays, kinda trying to “one up” each other each time. I think this year’s entry is gonna be reaaaaal hard to beat, as she based the cake and party around my favorite movies, and the upcoming Clerks 2! I also got the 2 Clerks Posters, which rock ass! THANK YOU SECRET STASH!”

Incredibly cool cake, Stephen. Happy Birthday, and hold onto that one – She’s a keeper!

  • Tickets to BOTH Clerks II shows at Edinburgh sold out in a staggering THREE HOURS! We hope many of you UK readers were able to grab tix, and enjoy the show.
  • Here’s how far the Clerks II press is spreading, folks. Brian and Jeff are interviewed in this week’s print edition of “The Sporting News” (July 21st issue). Here’s a transcript:
SN: A memoerable scene from Clerks is the rooftop hockey scene. Are you hockey fans?

O’Halloran: I’m a New York Rangers fan. I know heartache.

SN: What are your thoughts on the Stanley Cup now residing in NASCAR country?

O’Halloran: It’s kind of weird hearing hockey terminology being spoken in a Southern Accent. And they have, I think, Ric Flair as their mascot, and ever time they get a goal you hear “Woooooo!” It’s just so bizzare.

SN: What’s your most memorable sports moment?

Anderson: I am a huge Broncos fan-I bleed orange-so it’s the Broncos’ Super Bowl. Preferably John Elway’s MVP one. I have a dog named Elway.

SN: Brian, what was it like making out with Jennifer Schwalbach?

O’Halloran: Jennifer plays my fiancee in the movie. It’s not every day that someone asks you to make out with their wife while they’re watching it and filiming it. I didn’t want to have any kind of mistake because the next thing you know, I’m fired and Seth Green is in my place.

SN: The first Clerks was filled with Star Wars references. Your thoughts on Episode III?

Anderson: You would almost think I directed it, I talk about Episode III so much. I’m a fan. I’m not going to sit here and bash on the new Star Wars.

O’Halloran: It was a great animated film.

SN: What do you tell fans who think Kevin sold out by making a sequel?

O’Halloran: Donkey show. If they are fans of Kevin’s, they’ll want to see him do a donkey show.

  • Clerks II has now moved to the TOP of the promotional list that MGM e-mails out. If you’re a member, you’ll see an ad and blurb for the flick. It says:
Clerks II – In theatres July 21, 2006

Never before have so many done so little and been so raucously funny doing it. In ‘Clerks 2,’ New Jersey mini-mart clerks and best friends Dante Hicks (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) are forced to find new jobs in the fast-food universe – and they’re bringing their in-your-face attitudes, outrageous vulgarities and unbridled love of screwing with the customers with them.

Washington Post: “What Makes The Director Click?”

July 13th @ 9:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Nancy Alley, Brendan Kelly

  • This excellent article appears on the front page of the Style section of today’s Washington Post (though ignore the opening error stating Clerks II opens tomorrow, seems they ran this one a week too early). Regardless, despite the fact they seem to catch EVERY website in this piece except our very own (we remain the red-headed stepchild of the webverse, we suppose), here’s a very good story on Kevin’s influence in the cyber-world:
What Makes the Director Click?‘Clerks’ Filmmaker Nurtures His Fans, and Himself, Online

It may seem odd that “Clerks II,” which opens tomorrow and features graphic sexual banter and even an act of bestiality, is going to set its audience abuzz with warm and fuzzy feelings of nostalgia.

But then, most of filmmaker Kevin Smith’s fans know this territory well, having seen and loved the characters from the original “Clerks,” the 1994 cult movie that pushed taboo as far as it could go this side of an NC-17 rating.

And if anyone understands his fan base, it’s Smith, 35, who lives, breathes and blogs for his devotees. He has already experienced their enthusiasm for “Clerks II” at a recent sneak preview at Vulgarthon, his annual film fest for his message-board posse, held in his home town of Red Bank, N.J. And he has spent much of his time, as he always does, reading and responding to Internet postings on such Smith Web sites as http://viewaskew.com/ and http://silentbobspeaks.com/. No other filmmaker has made it his business to nurture, kibitz with, heckle and engage his fans on such an intimate, day-to-day basis.

Where does this obsessive attention come from?

“I think it comes from growing up fat and looking for constant validation,” says Smith, sitting at a Mexican eatery and working his way through an order of tortillas, refried beans, rice and a side order of hot cheese. “You just want somebody to be, like, ‘It’s all right that you don’t look like us, you’re fine.’ And interacting with the fan base is constant validation.”

The validation began with the seminal independent movie “Clerks,” which fans treated with the same life-defining reverence others have felt in previous eras for “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Easy Rider,” “Star Wars” and “Taxi Driver.”

The movie, for which Smith begged, borrowed and credit-carded $27,000, follows the travails of Dante and Randal, clerks at a New Jersey convenience store called Quick Stop, whose lives consist of graphic conversations about women, lengthy riffs about pop culture, and a little hockey on the roof.

“Clerks II” takes up with the characters 12 years later, all of them still heading nowhere. And in a sense, what Smith has made is not so much a movie as a tacit signal that he’s older, but hasn’t forgotten his youthful roots, or his fans.

For fans of the original “Clerks,” the film defined their generation — the one raised on McJobs, junk food and “Star Wars.” That a shoestring flick about real life could be picked up by Miramax and launch the career for a college dropout was deeply inspiring.

“This was a movie that talked like the people I know talk,” says Mike Cecconi, from Upstate New York, who saw “Clerks” when he was 17. “It was a revelation to see a film that had really smart people cussing and dealing with actual life.” Later, Cecconi changed his college major from newspaper journalism to film and, after graduation, moved to Los Angeles. He now works for Smith as a production assistant.

It was during the afterglow of “Clerks” that Smith discovered the Internet, a then-new phenomenon that promised to bring him even greater accessibility to his fans. Alerted in 1995 to a Web site dedicated to “Clerks,” Smith went to an Internet cafe in Red Bank and checked it out. He was so enchanted, he immediately hired its creator, Ming Chen, to do something similar for him.

When Chen suggested putting up a message board, Smith recalls his reaction: “I was, like, ‘So at 2 in the morning, if I wake up and I’m, like, I suck, and I’m alone in the world, I can jump on there and have somebody be, like, I like what you do, and sleep better?’ I was so dialed in to that notion.”

Since 1995, Smith has used the Internet to extend the profane but honest dialogue he has shared with his fans in films such as “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and “Jersey Girl.” Over the years he has posted the most intimate details of his life, including his emotionally harrowing battle to help his friend Jason Mewes (best known as Jay in Smith’s movies) battle drug addiction. (In a phone interview, Mewes declared he has just celebrated 3 1/2 years of sobriety.) Other subjects have included his first sexual encounter with his wife, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, normally unmentioned surgery and, more recently, a blog on the sheer joys of nose picking.

“Kevin is very open on the Internet,” says Jennifer, who has been married to Smith for seven years. “People know exactly what’s going on in our house, and he makes jokes about it. My only choice is to roll with it or I’d be mortified 99 percent of the time.”

Along with that out-there honesty, Smith says, come “the trolls,” the haters and detractors who make their views known in message boards on Web sites such as http://aintitcoolnews.com/ and http://imdb.com/.

“They post things like [a profanity] and they don’t even spell it right,” says Smith. In addition to casting aspersions on his lack of cinematic talent (”they’re not wrong”), they have ridiculed the size of his wife’s ears and suggested she is a gold digger; and they have questioned Smith’s parentage of their 7-year-old child, Harley Quinn Smith.

“They throw stuff out there because they know you’ll respond. You write something about Mel Gibson, he ain’t gonna show up and be, like, you’re wrong, or hurl an insult back. Since I’m known for doing it, people do it just to get a response.”

At first, Smith says, he responded hotly to everything — even e-mailing detractors personally. But lately, he has learned to let it go. (”I was, like, why am I fighting with these dudes?”) He also now charges a lifetime fee of $2 to post on his Web sites. (The proceeds go to a rape counseling organization.) It seems to have done the trick, he says, and allowed him to do what he loves best — with less turbulence. But he adds, “I gotta read what the opposite side says. I can’t believe the good if I don’t give credit to the bad. Otherwise I’m living in a fool’s paradise.”

It comes as no surprise, then, to hear Smith declare the Internet “the guidepost of my day.” By his estimation, he spends a third of his waking hours visiting news sites and his own sites and responding to fans. Lately, he has been putting up promotional video shorts on the “Clerks II” Web site. And last March, “sadly and unfortunately,” he discovered http://myspace.com/ , the Internet’s most popular social meetinghouse. In the space of three months, he says, he has approved more than 30,000 friends.

“I’ve never been addicted to crack,” says Smith. “But I imagine this is what crack is like. Who knew that I would be so desperate for friends that I would spend at least two to three hours every day approving friends?”

Says Jennifer: “All I need is my daughter, my husband and a few girlfriends. Kevin needs an audience of however many millions.”

Happiness, she says, means not reading his Internet chatter — so she’s unaware of Smith’s newfound friends such as “Vodka Bob,” “The Man Beast” and “Ilovebeer007,” and even such female posters as “Blue Ribbon,” who messages Smith to say: “if u werent married I’d sooo hit that . . .”

Marriage, Smith says, “has added a new friend to the mix.”

Besides, he says, he has honored his wife’s wishes and gently asked Mewes to move out. The actor has been living chez Smith, on and off for eight years, during his difficulties. But now that Harley Quinn is becoming more aware of things, says Smith, it’s time for their 32-year-old guest to leave.

“Mewes is kinda bummed about that,” says Smith, “because he’s living rent-free. She summed it up: I gave you the first eight years. Give me the next eight.” Just me, her and the kid.”

And the Internet fan base. Scott Mosier, Smith’s longtime producer, points out that “Mallrats,” Smith’s second movie, was “a box office bomb.” A $5 million film that was shot down in reviews, it made only $2.1 million in overall domestic box office. But its sales in the video store were quite another matter, he says. Universal, which distributed the film (Smith’s only venture without Miramax heads Bob and Harvey Weinstein), never told him how much “Mallrats” made in video sales but did say it was enough to reissue a 10-year-anniversary DVD.

Much more important than the money, or lack of it, says Mosier, were “the tons of people who found that movie on video. Our fan base grew out of that.”

Internet savvy has allowed Smith to have, and use, the kind of information most filmmakers delegate to studio research and marketing departments. Consequently, says Smith, he’s a step ahead of his distributors when it comes to understanding the tastes and attitudes of his audience. For the past 40 weeks, for instance, he has been posting five-minute video shorts documenting moments from the making of “Clerks II” on http://clerks2.com/ . It’s a way, he says, of keeping his fans in the know — and piquing their interest.

“It’s been a real education for the folks at the Weinstein Company,” says Smith, who says the Weinsteins were “kind of surprised” to find that sneak previews of the movie had played so well.

“We’re, like, ‘We had a feeling because we’re kind of dialed in to people who are potentially interested in seeing it.’ ”

And maybe, in another 10 years, “Clerks II: The Anniversary.”

New Clerks II Press At “Suite 101″…

July 13th @ 9:34 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Fred Topel

  • Two new shorts from our pal Fred Topel at his new site “Suite 101” are the first of what will be a long series of articles to promote Clerks II. First from a small story on Kevin’s “Superman” thoughts, here’s a snip:
“It’s not gay,” Smith said. “I made a gayer movie than Bryan Singer. Like Clerks II to me is a very gay movie, maybe the gayest movie ever made by a straight man right down to the musical sequence. It wasn’t very gay at all. I was kind of disappointed in it’s lack of gayness.”

And the second, more extensive piece delves into some pop culture references made in Clerks II. Again a sample follows:

“…The clerks even discuss one of Kevin Smith’s own unproduced projects, Ranger Danger. Smith is introducing his future creation “bit by bit.
