Askew Returns with more “Profiles In History” – Own Some!!!

April 29th, 2009 @ 4:27 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Ming, Brad & Chris

  • View Askew Productions are official participants in edition #36 (guess they couldn’t wait for 37) of the great “Profiles in History Hollywood Auction”. You can visit the official View Askew site for a listing of the items that could be yours.

For the most part this round are actual costumes used in the production of the flicks, going all the way back to “Dogma” and up through “Clerks II”. Some gems include Jason Lee’s white Azrael suit, Mark Hamill’s screen-used “Cocknocker” costume, and Jay & Bob’s Ninja masks from J&SBSB. Prices for these one of a kind pieces of View Askew history are extremely reasonable, with expected ending ranges between $300 and $500. There’s well over 20 items in this list, so be sure to head on over and at least take a peek at this stuff – If you don’t bid, it’ll likely be the last time you ever see it!

Good luck – As always, we’d love to see some of this stuff wind up in the hands of News Askew fans.

Help Kevin Cheer the Devils to NHL Victory Tonite!

April 28th, 2009 @ 7:21 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • The New Jersey Devils have gone to Game 7 against the Carolina Hurricanes — That game will be played tonight, in Newark, at 7:30 PM. Follow Kevin’s Twitter as he’ll be posting live updates from his beautiful luxury box in The Rock! A win tonight will allow the devils to move on to the next round of the playoffs – A loss, and their season is over. But we won’t even think of that.

Kevin purchased a luxury box at The Rock to run though the playoffs this year, since he’s now living in the area scouting for the new flick, which starts shooting in June. He originally was writing blogs from the NHL as a part of this initiative, but the blogs have since moved to his Twitter and his Silent Bob Speaks page to avoid any potential censorship.

Yahoo Sports recently ran a story lamenting the loss of Kev’s voice on the NHL.com website:

It’s disappointing to see the NHL play it so safe with what was rather benign content from one of the few household names in its “celebrity” blogging community. (No disrespect intended to the great Jay Baruchel and Jason Reitman.) The League’s gotten a bit more accepting of unconventional voices on its official Web site this postseason; it’s a shame to see one of them silenced because of an overly puritanical approach to editorial.

Of course, the upside is that we’ll now be able to read Silent Bob’s thoughts on Rangers fans without filters, constraints or concerns for good taste. Which could rank up there with the “Good Will Hunting 2” parody in “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” for comedic genius.

    GO DEVILS!!!!

  • The great and personable poker player DANIEL NEGREANU made a reference to Jay and Silent Bob strike back on his blog at cardplayer.com recently:

“I got home, chipped for about 10 minutes, did a three song Rockband duel against Patty who dropped off Mushu for me, and then I did my workout that I was supposed to do in the morning. Tonight I’ll probably watch some TV and talk some trash with the kids in the forums. I’m really having fun with the smack talk! It reminds me of that scene in Jay and Silent Bob where they read all the bad things people say about their movies online. They freak out, and in the end of the movie, they go door to door and beat the crap out of every 14 year old who was smack talking them. Classic scene.”

Reading that’s sure got the hold’em itch going…it’s a sickness!

  • Stan Lee’s “Mallrats” gig appears among Entertainment Weekly’s “Perfect Casting: 23 Stars as Themselves”:

Comic book legends may be nerds, but it doesn’t mean they don’t get lucky in the romance department — Lee cited his “running tally” with rocker Mick Jagger while imparting some romantic advice to Brodie (Jason Lee) in Kevin Smith’s sophomore film. (Lee, apparently, was in the lead).

  • Small correction – “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” hits Polish theaters in JUNE on the 26th, not April as we’d previously reported. The Polish in me made me do it.
  • Here’s a couple snaps of Mewes from his recent appearance at the “Full Moon Horror & Tattoo Festival” over the weekend to wind up the ‘bites. Catch Jay when he comes to your area, we hear the dude’s great with the fans. And hey, that does it for this update. We’ll see ya soon. See News Askew happening on the web or elsewhere? Drop us the scoop!

“Zack And Miri” BANNED in Thailand!!!

April 22nd, 2009 @ 6:07 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kurtis Wagner

  • We just thought it made such a cool headline, but that pretty much says it all. Nation Multimedia reports:

Thailand’s film censors block ‘Zack and Miri Make a Porno’

The National Film Board is standing by its decision to ban “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” in Thailand, citing that its explicit sexual content goes against moral principles here.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) initially gave “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” an NC17 rating (banning viewers under 17) for “some graphic sexuality”. However, director Kevin Smith appealed and the film finally got an R with no cuts. The R, or “Restricted” rating, requires viewers under 17 years old to be accompanied by an adult.

Set in the United States, the comedy tells the story of friends embarking on a project to make a porn movie.

      ‘May encourage copycats’

“The screening of this film may encourage copycats here,” Culture Ministry permanent secretary Vira Rojpojchanarat said yesterday.

The film’s distributor, M Pictures, argued that “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” was a satirical take on contemporary US society and was suitable for viewers aged over 18.

When the National Film Board decided to ban the film during its meeting on Monday, M Pictures appealed and a panel was set up to review the board’s ruling.

After viewing the film, the panel upheld the decision to ban “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” from Thai screens.

Well, we’ve been working on this site for almost 12 years now, and this is the FIRST major banning we can recall – At least in a really long time. It may be time to go fire up the Bluray on this Devils/Flyers/Lost-free evening — it just feels so subversive now…

Kevin’s NHL Blog Comes Home…

April 22nd, 2009 @ 6:06 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin made a surprise entry to his “Boring Ass Life” blog today, the first by him in quite some time. As Kevin has been voicing his opinions in quite a few other areas (SModcast and Twitter being the two main conduits these days), the long-form blog has been lower on the list of priorities. However, today Kevin reveals that he’s decided to move his NHL blog off the NHL site and onto our own airwaves. This way, there’s no need to deal with censorship, editors, and the like. In the end, we’ll get a much better product.

Kevin’s taken entry two, which comprises of a lot of his twitter posts made in real time during the last two games. You can read the entire thing at the blog site, though here’s Kevin’s intro explaining the move:

Okay, so for those who remotely care about NHL and the Stanley Cup Playoffs, I’m blogging on behalf of the NJ Devils for NHL.com.

      Or I was.

With zero acrimony whatsoever, and nothing but love for the NHL, I’m here to announce the Devils Playoffs blog will move back here, to SilentBobSpeaks.com. Even though I was able to find a way around swearing in the blog, the NHL site is – understandably – a lot less liberal than my website. So rather than submit multiple drafts of a blog in order to make it more general audience friendly, we’ve decided that maybe it’d be best to move the blog back here, where I can let my hair down more.

No cause for alarm or outrage. S’not a big deal. No reason to be pissed at the NHL or me. This just makes more sense – as sports generally play to family audiences, and I generally play to reprobates and Persons of Interest.

We’re happy to see new content back at SBS. Now, we’d like everyone to say a prayer for our personally beloved Flyers, who are struggling, for a W tomorrow — And of course, cheer along with Kevin and the rest of View Askew as the Devils bring it back to The Rock tomorrow night, with the best-of-7 series tied at 2 games each (with Carolina). A win tomorrow night is key for both the Devils AND the Flyers. Big hockey night this Thursday.

  • Via his Twitter, Kevin revealed he’d be calling into Toronto’s “Dean Blundell” radio show this morning, and we’re happy to now have the audio for ya. You can grab a direct download of the segment at their official site or through iTunes via 102.1 The Edge.
  • Despite the big news on the Thai banning above, we CAN report that the awesome folks in Poland will premiere “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” this weekend! The official premiere is on the 26th. Nice to see that my heritage still embraces View Askew. If you’re in Poland, enjoy the flick this weekend – Laughs guaranteed.
  • “Clerks” shows up at fansite 411 Mania as a clip to celebrate their feature on “green week”. Probably not the “green” you’re expecting on this Earth Day, either. Jay & Bob ALSO show up in 411’s list of “Movie Stoners”.
  • Those interested in that Kevin Smith summer film class in Michigan but who are NOT current students, here’s a few more details. A guest registration system in place at CMU, though the professor didn’t have the specifics on it for us. However, you can contact the the College of Extended Learning at celinfo@cmich.edu if you’re interested in attending the class.

  • We were waiting a while for this one…And happy to see the series back. Lee Stranahan’s awesome interview with Kevin Smith returns with Part 7, titled “Talking to People He Wrote”. This 8-minute clip focuses on the new script he picked up, pleasing his Dad, and his body of work. Miss a clip? They’re all over at the Stranahan page — We’ll likely put up a nice neat story with every clip once the interview concludes, as well.

  • Kevin sat in for the duration of the Opie & Anthony show on Friday last week, and our buddy Will’s got the edited audio of the entire broadcast for your listening pleasure. Gotta love it. Download your size/quality MP3 of
    choice:

The 64 Kbps stereo copy. (2:02 runtime, 56 MB file size, right-click to save). Or…

Here’s the 24 Kbps mono copy. (2:02 runtime, 21 MB file size, right-click to save).

As always, thanks to Will for his encoding skills — Following this show, Opie went on to attend the New Jersey Devils playoff game at The Rock with Kevin — A game I was lucky enough to be invited to as well, with thanks to Kevin and Ming. What a place!

  • In the Nashville area? Check out the “Full Moon Tattoo & Horror Festival” this weekend, where Jason Mewes is scheduled to appear. The fest runs from April 24-26th at the Nashville Airport Marriott Hotel. No details on Mewes’ appearance schedule, though if we hear anything concrete, we’ll let ya know. Assuming he’ll be in town for all 3 days, Fridays are traditionally the best days to meet celebs at these events (lesser crowds).
  • The students demanded it, so it’s BACK! For a second time, “The Films of Kevin Smith: will be presented at Central Michigan University (courtesy of the School of Broadcast & Cinematic Arts), Mount Pleasant, Michigan. When, you ask? June 1st to June 4th, from 3:30 – 6:50 p.m. each day. Films to be featured this year: “Clerks”, “Jersey Girl”, “Clerks II”, and “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”. Instructor Jeffrey Smith tells us:

“Films will be viewed through the lens of auteur theory, since that seems the most appropriate to the director/writer.

This is the second time the course will be taught, and there are, as of this writing, still seats available for this course, although not many.”

We’re awaiting some further details on how one can register for the class – Though we’re guessing a call to the University for more info couldn’t hurt. Sounds like a fun weeklong course, that’s for sure.

  • “Dogma”‘s Linda Fiorentino and appear in the lineup of MSN Movies’ “Where are They Now?” file. “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” star appears in the first slot as well. In the write-up for Fiorentino, they cite evidence of her behavior on the “Dogma” set as a possible catalyst in her career slowdown.
  • We ran just a piece of Kevin’s video meet-up with Malcolm Ingram last week. Via the SModcaster user, you can see a bunch more — We’re also betting that this will be the spot to go to catch any future video snippets that accompany SModcast. With episode #100 on the approach, perhaps we’re closer to VidSmod than we think…
  • One for the archives – Paste Magazine ran a nicely positive review of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” back in the Fall around release time — Since we were following their other coverage for the film, we wanted to make sure this nice review was linked up in the archives as well.
  • For the second time in a week, the icky term “bromance” is being used with Jay & Bob – This time, Empire Magazine lists the duo as one of their “10 Greatest Movie Bromances” :

Like Pegg and Frost, Jay and Silent Bob refer to each other – well, one of them does – as ‘my hetero-life-mate’. Their double act developed over the course of four previous Smith films, but it was here, in his broadest and most outrageous comedy to date, where they took central stage, showcasing a relationship that was as fucked-up as it was tender. They’re the perfect duo.

Most Bromantic Moment: The whole thing. Theirs isn’t a relationship where an excuse must be contrived for them to have an argument, just so they can reconcile later in an emotional scene with soaring strings. These guys stick with each other through thick, thin and really, awfully, very stupidly thick.

Who’s The Beard? After a fashion, jewel thief Justice (Shannon Elizabeth), who pines after Jay, for some reason we still can’t entirely fathom.

An Evening With Kevin Smith Live From Carnegie Hall!!!

April 16th, 2009 @ 11:16 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • When we predicted a big “Evening With” in last night’s update, sure, we expected a pretty major announcement today — But this surpasses even our wildest expectations. Yes, Kevin is coming to CARNEGIE HALL for a historic, one night only show. This is BIG, folks. The largest and most prestigious venue Kevin has ever appeared at. Easily the must-see, must-attend View Askew event of 2009. Carnegie Hall’s gonna be rockin’ on June 17th, folks.

Best of all, Kevin reveals that the official event won’t be announced for sale until Monday the 20th — But TODAY, April 16th, at 11 AM EST, you can start ordering your tickets online exclusively through View Askew. Yep, before the rest of the world knows!!! The Hall is a big place, so plenty of seats are available, but getting to that website this morning will assure you first pick at the best seats in the house. And believe us, you’re gonna want those seats.

No further details about the show are revealed at this point, but Kevin’s promising something very special. We’ve already speculated on what could transpire, but we have a feeling any guests or surprises will be kept top secret until that night. Kevin has also said that the show will NOT be recorded for video, which will allow him to be totally free-wheeling with everything he dishes on. In other words, buckle up and prepare yourself for a candid, no-holds-barred evening of crazy.

Here’s what Kevin had to say in the official announcement post:

HOLY FUCK!!! I’M GONNA PLAY CARNEGIE HALL!!!!!!

This will only ever happen once in my lifetime, and it’s gonna be a serious fucking hoot. Maybe even a holler. This, my friends, will be worth the trip. Promise.

We’ve put together this info page with a link for ticket sales. Please note, however: THE LINK FOR TICKET SALES WILL NOT GO LIVE ‘TIL ELEVEN A.M. THIS MORNING, EST (MEANING TODAY).

Carnegie Hall’s not announcing the show/sales info to the rest of the world (who won’t care anyway) ’til 4/20 (har-har). That means, if you’re so inclined to watch a fat boob (who ironically sports two fat boobs) sweat and swear on the greatest stage in the world, the best seats are up for grabs for the next few days.

I’d be lying if I said this was a dream come true; because what fucking useless pud-knocker with no quantifiable talents would ever dream about playing Carnegie Hall. I’m not Yo Yo Ma; I’m Mo’ Mo’ Devil Dogs.

      And yet, here we are.

I hope you can make it. I really do (especially ’cause that place is a fucking barn that I don’t know if I can fill).

We’re absolutely thrilled for Kevin and cannot wait for this event. We hope to see fans from across the world at this one. Just two months away!!! See you there – ALL OF YOU!!!!
