The Twitter Report…

June 4th, 2011 @ 1:21 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Adam Gallaher, Glenn Gilliard

  • Lots of “Red State” news via Twitter to cap the weekend here, including the fact that it will be the NEXT movie from writer/director Kevin Smith (not “Hit Somebody”) and that filming’s going to start in August. Pretty cool stuff, as this is the first definite confirmation we have of a start date. Some cating is already complete, though no names have yet to be released.

In other news, Kevin reveals a big international “Evening With” in Syndey for early August, and more on SModcast and the castle, which may soon be the ONLY place on the planet to catch live SModcast. Read on:

Prisoners of AUSTRALIA! I am coming to set you free! Meet me at the SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE on 8/8! http://tinyurl.com/KevComesToTheLandDownUnder

Via @1973z “any chance of a visit to Perth?” Sydney only this time around. The OPERA HOUSE! When I get home, we start shooting RED STATE.

Via @Accidental_Rob “Any big plans for your 40th b’day?” It involves a stage. And some cameras. http://tinyurl.com/ItWas40YearsAgoToday

Via @BazTinkOTheRink “Mosier working on Red State or is he doing his own thing” His own thing, sir. Which includes SModcast, naturally.

Via @LynchAtLarge “any chance of a cameo by @JimNorton in Red State” No, but I want him to play a Glenn Hall-like goalie in HIT SOMEBODY.

@RetroDLC “Have you ever thought about using digital cameras (EG: Red) exclusively?” @ThatDavidKlein & I visited the Red Studio & our eyes & boners popped at the portability & better-than-film look. That camera is fucking magic. AND poetic: Red Cameras for #RedState.

@evilneuro ” yet your candy ass is on the front cover: http://www.amazon.com/Cop-Rock-Your-Glock-Blu-ray/dp/B002ZG970G ” When you see the BluRay, you’ll know why: I’m literally the third lead in the BluRay version of #CopOut . It’s like the flick was blended with Q&A.

Last night at the Improv, #LIVEnudeSMOD crushed it! Mostly because I sat on it, but still. Come & see for yourself: http://livenudesmod.com

This Saturday night in PROVINCETOWN, I’m getting feted. Or fisted. Can’t remember which. But when in Rome, I say… http://shar.es/mk8qf

Inch by inch, a Twitter-fueled stoner whimsy is made flesh! Behold! http://tinyurl.com/ScaleSModcastleWalls YOU! Follow @SModcastle

Thanks to the live Kevin Smith Twitter feed for these…Hit it up for a lot more.

  • The people behind this look back at 2010 flicks really should be hired by the Oscars or at least the MTV awards to throw together film clippage — It’s an amazing look back at the films produced or released this year, and a must-watch (and yes, it’s got a little “Cop Out” in there, too).
  • Kevin says that the new Weinstein deal announced last week makes the long-awaited (and in our opinion, superior) “Jersey Girl Extended Cut” Bluray a “real possibility”.
  • Among those on the wish list for a future edition of SMovieMakers at SModcastle? JJ Abrams. With “Super 8” on the fringe, perhaps he’d like to show clippage to a select audience of 50? If you’ve got a connection, let him know.
  • Longtime View Askew contributor, and star of the “Blow Hard” and “Mo and Glo” podcasts, Malcolm Ingram has a new quest — To make a porno. Stay tuned to new episodes of “Blow Hard” for details. You can also get involved immediately through a donation on that site.
  • With today being Christmas eve, just in case this is our last visit with you pre-holidays, let us wish you and yours the very best of holidays — Thanks for spending a few minutes with News Askew, whether you’re here at the ‘ol .com, on twitter, or your other e-delivery product of choice. And don’t forget, big changes and enhancements to News Askew are coming in 2011. See you soon.

“Hit” Casting News Today; Kev’s Upcoming Slate…

November 29th, 2010 @ 12:00 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Regular followers of this site already know that Kevin’s immediate plans in the world of film include a release of “Red State”, followed by “Hit Somebody”, as well as a potential return to the world of “Clerks” if he has something to say about life in his 40’s through the eyes of Dante and Randal. We follow pretty much everything said by or about Kevin here at News Askew, and these are indeed the only 3 film projects that Kevin has mentioned over the past few years, at all. So, it came of no surprise when we saw this quote that /Film pulled from a recent interview:

“Red State is done. Next step is the hockey movie, Hit Somebody. Then I’m done. There’s possibly a Clerks 3. If I have something to say in my late 40s about being in my late 40s, I’ll think of [Clerks’] Dante and Randal. Shy of that, I don’t have any more movies I want to make.”

Did we take this as a unofficial announcement of retirement from filmmaking? Not at all, really. Kevin has always said he wanted to get 10 films out there (he’s been saying this for a LONG time, dating all the way back to Dogma around 1999). So, to our loyal readers, this may not have seemed major news, though it seems some outlets picked this up as some sort of bombshell without even checking with the source. /Film, however, decided to contact Kevin directly about the quote, and he Kevin took the time to script a thoughtful, detailed response which we’ll share a few excerpts from here:

… But THIS “retirement” crap? Not news so much as another sad example of how fucking lazy movie press has become: they cannibalize stories by other writers just to have something to post on their own blogs. Yours was the only website that bothered to go DIRECTLY to the source, Peter – other cats ran articles without even tossing a Tweet my way to check veracity. And I answer Tweets like I answer the dinner bell: often & much. While sweating. And already eating something else.

I’ve always said (since CLERKS, even) that I’ve got about ten films in me (that info might even be on my Wikipedia page). And COP OUT notwithstanding (solely because I didn’t write it), HIT SOMEBODY is the 10th film I’ve got in me. At this moment in time, I’ve got no other flicks I wanna make. The musing about a possible return visit to the View Askewniverse with a third CLERKS is something I’ve been doing since CLERKS II, but I’ve always opened said musings with the disclaimer “If I ever wanna make a flick about being in my 40’s, I’ll think of Dante & Randal first.” There are no concrete plans for a CLERKS III.

…If you’ve GOTTA have some Kevin Smith news to hold you over? Here’s something that’s not so much news as my stated intentions for RED STATE: if it gets into Sundance, my plan is to pick the RED STATE distributor right there – IN THE ROOM – auction style. Might even bring up a professional auctioneer to make it fun and unintelligible. And if you’re a multi-millionaire who can’t make it to the first screening of RED STATE, fear not: maybe we’ll set up an eBay page for the post-screening bid-calling as well.

Congrats to /Film for doing the diligence to check with Kevin, and for getting the facts straight. More news later, as we’ll be watching for the “Hit” news and anything else that drops, as well as catching up on some leftover holiday tidbits from the break. Stay tuned.

  • MTV Movies, in a converation with Adam Brody, suggests that the title of “A Couple of Dicks” may indeed be changed.
  • Consequence of Sound has a nice piece about the awesomeness of the “Clerks” motion picture soundtrack, a disc whose tunes and dialogue still plays fantastic today on the iPod, by the way. Though, when it came out, who the heck knew what an iPod or even an MP3 was, right? We really dig this story, probably the best we’ve seen written about the soundtrack, and rightfully so, we might add. Here’s a sample:

The Clerks OST was definitive in that it literally sums up everything about 90s young adult derision and its impact on society, complementing attitude with amplitude and allowing room for both witty quotations and suitable background audio. There are obvious moments where a song makes the scene, such as the quintessential opening credits featuring Clerks by New Jersey alt rock outfit Love Among Freaks. The band was local to Smith and he approached them to do music for his film; the movie unwittingly became a vehicle for Love Among Freaks as they also performed the soundtrack inclusion Berserker and reappeared on the soundtrack to Chasing Amy, but unfortunately the group only released one full studio album before dissipating into nostalgic bliss.

Other pivotal moments that are boosted by their musical companions include: the introduction of Jay & Silent Bob receiving the Girls Against Boys treatment with Kill The Sex Player a stoner rock tune (how appropriate) with plenty of fuzz and bass along for the ride; Jay attempting a white boy break dance routine to the sound of Stabbing Westwards Violent Mood Swings [Thread Mix]; the Randal and Dante discussion of contractors killed on an exploding Death Star (one of two primary Star Wars conversations) is enhanced by Bash & Pops Making Me Sick; the entrance of Randal Graves is accented by Alice In Chains bluesy Got Me Wrong before he exits at the end credits to Soul Asylums Cant Even Tell.

  • Just to clarify, here are the official UK and US release dates for Kevin’s two upcoming books: “Shooting the Shit” hits US shelves on September 22nd, and UK shelves on October 2nd. The new Special Edition of best-seller “My Boring-Ass Life” arrives in the US on September 29th, and in the UK, on October 2nd, same day as the new book. As always, signed copies from Mr. Smith will be shipping from The Stash immediately, so get your orders in there, or come buy your books in person at upcoming events, inluding the live Jersey SModcast. On a releated note, check out Paste Magazine for a short blub on “Shootin'” as well.
  • Mewes continues to conduct press for his own Q&A events happening lately in and around Canada. This article from Ground Control. In this new interview, he talks about the status of “K-11”, producing, directing, acting outside the Askewniverse, and moer. But here’s the most amusing quote, when he discusses his own Q&A strategy:

“It’ll be fun; it’s sort of like Kevin’s ‘Night With’ that he’s doing and they filmed one of for HBO, but Kevin can go for five or six hours or longer because he’s been doing them for years. I’m building up to that [laughing]; I can go for about three hours and while his stories are about fifteen or twenty minutes long, mine are about three to six minutes but I’ll pull my balls out and he won’t.

Has Mewes thrown down the gauntlet? Catch him live…if you dare. For more Jay press, check out a similar blurb at Pulse Niagara.

  • One of our fave movie news sites out there, Cinematical, runs a piece titled “Filmmakers Who Love to Talk About Movies”, featuring, well…Just that. There’s video evidence to back up their claims, as well. The entire article is highly recommended, where they call Kevin “The Storyteller”:

      The Storyteller – Kevin Smith

You may not like the films of Kevin Smith, but after watching this clip you can’t tell me that this guy doesn’t know how to tell an entertaining story. Listening to Smith talk about movies is like having a conversation with one of your friends, and there are very few people who can connect with their audience like that. Granted, his critiques aren’t always the most ‘highbrow’, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t accurate — and more importantly, pretty damn funny.

Surf over and watch the video, where Kev talks Superman Returns and Star Trek during an “Evening With”.

The Twitter Report…

  • While we were trying to keep up with all the big news dropping due to the Con, Kevin’s been busy tweeting up a storm lately. Let’s take a look at some of the more noteworthy tweets from recent days. He’s back to record pace lately, like it was when he first hit Twitter, so we highly recommend you run a follow to @ThatKevinSmith to read them all – We’re just scratching the surface on the most newsworthy, but there’s so much more. Here’s a peek:

Via @thecolecash “How is “Red State” coming along?” Dave & I storyboarded for a few hours today. Found this amazing actress for Cheyenne…

Via @filmthreat “Where’s RedState being filmed?” California, sir. Up Whittier way. 80% of it shoots behind maximum security walls. #srsly

Via @sonic43 “Did you decide if RedState was shooting digital or film” Last I heard from @ThatDavidKlein, RED will be shot on a @RedCamera.

Via @Billy3152 “spot for hockey guys Leary or Sandler in Hit Somebody?” Massive cast, but I’m looking to surround Seann w/ CANADIAN actors.

Via @njosnavelin714 “You really believe HitSomebody’ll be the best film you ever make” 100 pages in, before we shoot a frame, it already is.

Via @StephanieClark_ “when do you start shooting for Hit Somebody?” Hopefully mid-2011. So let’s stop talking about it. Getting blue balls.

Via @SansomJam “Hit Somebody a comedy or something akin to The Wrestler?” It’s funny, but I don’t know if I’d call it a comedy. s’like GUMP.

Via @cmatthes1 “MCM mode of #CopOut gives me hope for the new BluRay extras” It’s pretty entertaining. Watched opening w/crowd & it crushed.

Via @bigstunz “Walt killed it in latest Smodcast” He CRUSHED PrimaNocta TELL’EM LIVE. Ask @BryAndWalt to put that 1 up on Friday. Pure gold.

Me & @SMosier sang FAMILY TIES & this dude mixed it into TIE’s opening credits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5LIs5W5JpM&feature=related

Via @MasterBruceSHH “Just read Gyre #6. Best ish so far. kudos for the last twist” Walt & I have been waiting a year for that splash page…

Via @denmark116 “How long do we wait for volume 2?” GYRE Vol. 2 starts up after the first of the year. And it’s a MUCH more familiar Bats…

Via @pcraig20 “how long the Green Hornet run is going to be” 10 issues. Then, I start begging @jimlee00 to do HORNET/BATMAN crossover mini.

Via @jace1013 “looks like #CopOut did well: http://bit.ly/9R3DyO #1 on every list” Congrats to the Movie Formerly Known As A Couple of Dicks

Via @lunchboxfett “When can we hear SModcastle opening night?” Not for awhile. Lots of banked shows to get up first: Philly, Billings, SF…

Via @dimmke “Can you stop making movies & just do #SModcast every day” Working on it, sir. Once we’re done with HIT SOMEBODY, s’possible…

@omfgitzjay “Will WYSMC be on SModcast Network?” No: to be a part of SModcast.com you’ve gotta know me REALLY well. Wanna know why? SModcast.com isn’t just weekly podcasts by me & my friends; it’s actually a more ambitious, ongoing project: SMod’s my autobiography.

This is my 10,000th Tweet. I’m using it to thank all y’all for following. You’ve given me enough juice to jump start the Act 2. Many thanks.

Our particular favorite Twitter highlight from the last week is a run that Kevin did on historical photos and posts back on July 20 and 21. If you didn’t see it, go back and seek out this stream. Tons of great photos and links in there.

“Cop Out” – Hottest Bluray/DVD In The Country!

Want more? Reelzchannel also spent a few moments with Kev to talk about the Bluray’s MCM mode.

  • DirecTV is enjoying exclusive rights to on-demand “Cop Out” now, so those of you waiting for Redbox or Netflix, it’ll be a few more weeks until the flick is allowed via those services. Pick up a copy to own today.

  • Kevin talks “Cop Out” with Coming Soon, via this exclusive video clip which runs a whopping eight-plus minutes. Most definitely worth trying. Pick up the “Cop Out” DVD or packed Bluray, now available all over the place. We’ll let you know when the Stash has the online orders up for signed copies, too, collectors — Sit tight.
  • In the mood for a little more video? For the past few years, Kevin’s been a huge fan and participant in the Crazy 4 Cult art show. Those of you who weren’t lucky enough to be in the Los Angeles area to attend will be happy to see this excellent 10 minute look at the event, courtesy of G4. Take a look at some of the art, meet some of the aritists, and look for an appearance from Mr. Smith himself.
  • Bill Murray revealed that, while he’s never seen “Clerks”, he at least seems to know it exists and was influential in the world of independent film:

“…That’s good. I want those things to work, but I’m out of touch. I have no idea. I never saw the original Office. I never saw this Office. I never even saw Clerks. Like I never saw, what’s-his-name, Larry David’s show.”

Read the entire interview at the GQ website.

  • Seems that “Mallrats” star Jeremy London will appear as one of the cast of the new season of VH-1’s “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew”. We hope the program is helpful to him.
  • Looks like our old pals the Westboro Baptists will be protesting at Comic-Con this weekend. Kevin’s sometime’s spotted trading barbs with one of the Phelps clan via twitter, and it’s been suggested that the family may also have issues with “Red State”, as it allegedly deals with a villain cut from similar cloth, unless the script’s changed since then.

“Cop Out” DVD/Bluray: July 20th, 2010!

May 14th, 2010 @ 8:13 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Nick Aderholdt

  • DVD Active reveals covert art and two editions for “Cop Out”, arriving for home consumption this summer. The DVD editions looks to be a standard edition of the film with some deleted scenes. The Bluray, which is being called the “Rock Out with your Glock Out Edition”, will feature a “Maximum Comedy Mode” where Kevin Smith and Seann William Scott will walk in throughout the film with comments and skits. Additional features on the Blu include something called “Focus Points” and “Wisdom from the Shit Bandit”.

If the deleted scenes include some of the absolutely hilarious stuff that Kevin was doing with Seann and Tracy on the last day of shooting we had the pleasure of watching in Brooklyn, you’re in for a major treat — Tons of off the cuff dialogue that was fed from Kevin to these guys via the headset is some of the funniest stuff that ended up on the cutting room floor.

More details will come as the date draws closer, but for now, feast your eyes on the cover art, and mark your calendar for another packed home movie release from Kevin, who never disappoints when it comes to getting your money’s worth out of one of his theatrical efforts in your home collection.

The “Twitter” Report…

  • From the Twitter feed of Kevin Smith, the latest tweets included a long series on the desire to obtain a regular theater/venue in the Los Angeles area that Kevin and Scott could use to host regular live SModcasts, movie screenings during edits, and the like. Sounds like a new mecca on the west coast! No idea on if the idea will come to fruition, though it’s the coolest thing we heard since that View Askew-themed miniature golf course from a month or so back. That, and more, in this mid-week edition of the Twitter Report:

Ladies & Gentlemen, I have arrived! I’m the #GeekAWeek trading card: http://bit.ly/b0sQim Cardback: http://bit.ly/apFESn Very flattered.

ANGELENOS! I’m looking to lease a small, 50 seat venue in the H’wood/Valley area. Why? For THE SMODCAST THEATER. Any leads? (Glengary only.)

Via @samvance “UCB theater” That’s THEIR theater. I want my own for weekly live SModcasts. Shit: with a theater? DAILY morning SModcasts!

Via @BigTree33 “does it need seats?” Bean bags and comfy couches would be better, I’m thinking. Just a cool space for recording/performing.

Via @Opheliac_Lolita “Why not rent out some kind of small warehouse and outfit as you like?” Ooooo… I like the way sNrub thinks!

See, this is what I’m talking about: http://www.workingstage.com/photos_interior.html A nice, small 50-or-so seater. Leasing cheaply.

Look at THIS sexy bitch: http://findlocal.latimes.com/west-l-a/performing-arts/theater/black-box-theatre-los-angeles-theater/photos

Via @david973 “Just for SMods? Or other projects too?” I’d use it for feedback screenings when I’m still in the edit. Pick 50 Tweeps & roll.

With COP OUT, I finally realized my lifelong dream to work with every actor on the ARMAGEDDON poster. Next up: the entire DEEP IMPACT cast.

Via @dmbarnette “bringing smod to rhode island?” SModcast? Not yet. But me? Cumming soon… WITH JOHN WATERS! http://bit.ly/akGDd6 #PTownFF

For the record: the Live SMods will ALL go up. But not in any particular order, and not every week. We’ll save ’em for when we’re SMod-less.

Via @dWorstGamerEver “Kinda bummed the HOB show is sold out.” Still some Standing Room Only tix available: http://viewaskew.com/events/hob/
