  • Industry sources are indicating some troubles for Seth Rogen’s “Green Hornet” project, making it look like the Sony film won’t shoot at all this year. This is a real bummer of a story, considering the involvement of the great Stephen Chow had fans across the globe excited. So, let’s just say that the flick is on life support right now. If we hear more, we’ll let ya know. As you know, this project was dropped in Kevin’s lap at one point, and then drew renewed interest from us when “Zack & Miri” star Rogen came onboard.
  • A popular blog dedicated to the addicting “World of Warcraft” PC game made a few View Askew references in the latest entry, citing the fact that killing 37 mobs in a row gives you a game achievement.
  • Akimbo Comics mentions Kevin in the last panel of the web comic “Eat Sh@t and Die”. Yep, we got the title right. The well-drawn book cites the author’s past experiences with the females in his life.

  • Kevin gives a brief new interview to Atomic Comics to promote the “Batman: Cacophony” project, which is now shipping issue #2. Here’s a snippet from the piece on the status:

AC – Are all three issues of Cacophony in the box already?

KS – Yeah. Issue Two ships this week. And Walt is on the last three pages of Issue Three’s pencils, so that’ll ship on time, too. I learned my lesson: no more lateness for me. No more announcements until at least 2/3 of the scripts are in.

  • “Zack And Miri” appear among other films in Zap2It’s list “From Sewer to Success” which features movies and TV shows where characters had to work from nothing to get somewhere.

  • This is potentially BIG news, but since it’s the unreliable IMDB, we just have to chalk this up as rumor for right now — The site reports that Kevin will direct (for at least an episode) the new Untitled Seth Rogen/Evan Goldberg Show being developed for the Showtime network. Due to Kevin’s past involvement with the network (for the enjoyable “Manchild” pilot), and obviously his relationship with Rogen, we could certainly see this happening. If anyone on the inside has any verification or a flat out denial, we’d love to hear so we can clear this one up.
  • And finally today, we just couldn’t risk linking this web comic, and when you read it, you’ll see why. Sort of like the carrot dangling in front of us that we just couldn’t resist. Catch ya next time…

  • Cinemablend pays thanks to filmmakers who “keep it real”, citing Kevin as one of the worthy:

Kevin Smith’s characters are all cut from the same, humble cloth. Just because you’re smart doesn’t mean you’ll make it big, and even though Smith’s characters may be brilliant people, more often than not they’re found behind the counters of convenience stores, coffee shops, and roving the hallways of strip malls. They talk without an FCC filter, flinging curse words with reckless abandon in the way that any guy in a bar might do, talking about the same stuff you’ve probably said yourself after a beer or two. They fall in love, they fight, they make friends, they break up, and they do it without Hollywood shine. They’re too broke to afford glamour. Not that they let that stop them. Broke doesn’t mean broken and with or without money Smith’s avatars have smart things to say and lives to live. They live those lives not in LA or New York, but in nowhere towns in New Jersey or in the frozen, bitterly cold suburbs of Pittsburgh. Even thrust into the weirdest of situations, Kevin Smith’s characters are still mostly just dudes. They hang out in bars, wander around comic book shops, and work in video stores. They’re pot smoking, porno making, lesbian courting dudes.

  • G4’s video show “Fresh Ink” runs down the latest comic releases, and has a few words on issue #1 of “Batman: Cacophony”. Blair Butler digs Kevin’s return to comics, and says she’ll be on board for the series. Skip in to around 3 minutes into the program if you want to get right to that review. A few panels are shown but no spoilers for those of you who have yet to pick up the first of the three-issue series.
  • We don’t have a scan (yet, anyway), but we’re getting reports that the latest version of “Previews” (which details upcoming comics and swag releases), shows the awesome “Monroeville Zombies” hoodies (along with a cast
shot from “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”). This means these should be available for holiday shipment from the Stash at the price of $40 – $43 (depending on size). Absolutely an awesome gift to pick up for the fan in your life (or yourself). Definitely one of our favorite swag items of all time.
  • Podcast “Two Geeks, a Mic & a Podcast” recently devoted an episode to Kevin in honor of the theatrical release of “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”. The guys take a detailed look at the entire Smith filmography leading up to the latest addition, including their review of Z&M.
  • Catch glimpses of Askewers Ben Affleck and Justin Long in the trailer for “He’s Just Not That Into You”, which looks like it’ll do some decent business as a date movie when it his theaters this February.
  • The Netherlands branch of Comedy Central will air Kevin Smith films for the next few weeks, every Friday night. Since the link’s in Dutch, we can’t give many more details, and are unsure if they air cut or uncut versions. If you live in the area, perhaps you already know.
  • Finally today, we continue to enjoy following the evolution of flying cars ever since Kevin’s famous “Tonight Show” short — Today, MSN reveals the latest design taking flight — Pretty amazing (though we shudder at the thought of some drivers behind the wheels of these things). Catch ya next time.

  • The Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” wisely began picking up the brilliant “Clerks” animated series to air as part of the weekly animation block. Episodes are airing Fridays at 11 PM and repeating 2 days later, Sundays at 10 PM. All times EST so check your local listings. If you haven’t watched the episodes in a while, they play great on repeat viewings and are funny as ever. It’s such a shame we only got a handful as we think the premise could have continued forever. Re-live the dream on Cartoon Network every weekend.
  • For those of you collecting all the variant covers of Kevin and Walt’s “Batman” series, a small change to note – Issue #2’s variant cover sketch edition will now feature art by Adam Kubert. Retailers still can only get ONE of these for every 50 standard copies, making them quite rare to snag.
  • It appears that “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” stars Mewes and Morgan were at Tao Las Vegas last weekend performing hosting duties at the exclusive club and we missed it! One of your loyal webmasters was in town for a friend’s wedding and had no idea — So, we’ll have to live with this brief report.
  • Let’s catch up with a few YouTube Askew bundles of joy today — First up, a dude called “That Fellow in the Coat” dedicates an entire episode to Jay & Silent Bob. Watch the guy devote an entire 7 minutes to a video essay on the duo’s exploits through cinema.

And just in case ya missed it, here’s Matt Damon giving his very candid thoughts on ex-VP candidate Sarah Palin.

  • Scooper Garrett from Filmadelphia checks in with a brief report from the recent “Batman: Cacophony” signing at Stash East (the Stash nearest and dearest to our hearts). Take a peek at his brief report which includes a shot of the line and a few other random snaps of fans and the store’s interior.
  • Finally today, a group of teens were arrested for smoking pot during a recent Seth Rogen film…And we’ll give ya a hint, it wasn’t “Pineapple Express”! See ya next time…

AICN Digs Kev & Walt’s “Batman”…

November 21st @ 6:40 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • When Kevin broke into the comics biz years ago, the industry changed forever, as he truly made waves, taking his screenwriting talents and adapting them to a medium that’s been in his life since he was a child. Now, along with his good friend Walt Flanagan’s amazing art to go with the words, the duo have created a new 3 book miniseries titled “Batman: Cacophony” and issue #1 has been out a few weeks now taking over sales charts everywhere. Don’t have a copy yet? Order one from the Stash before the first run is sold out.

Aint It Cool News posts a very positive review of the book this week as part of the “Pull List” feature, read on for some choice passages.

“…Kevin brings his trademark humor to a story of murder, drugs, and intrigue. The best part of this book hands-down is Onomatopoeia, a superb villain who first debuted during Kevin’s GREEN ARROW run. It’s perfect that he brings him back for this story, but it also brings up a gripe I have with DC. This guy is phenomenal – why do you not put him in more books!?!? Out of the four baddies who appear in the first issue, the others being Joker, Zsasz, and Deadshot, Onomatopoeia steals the show once again.”

“…I have to commend Walt Flannagan and his artwork. Traditionally he’s been the guy that sells comics at the Secret Stash in Red Bank or Walt the Fanboy in Smith’s movies, but the guy actually has some very serious talent.”

“…BATMAN: CACOPHONY #1 was an amazing return of Kevin Smith to DC Comics. Smith handles Batman like a true pro and masterfully runs us through the issue. Flanagan is a much welcome addition to the comic book world and the two are truly a dynamic duo together (bad pun well intended). This is a comic I can’t wait to get my hands on, so hopefully the rest of the series will come out on time.”

Books 2 and 3 are written and drawn, so expect to see them in your hands in the next couple of months. Then it’s just a matter to see what comic project Kevin will take on next – Hopefully once again with Flanagan’s awesome art to go with it.

November 6th @ 1:14 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin has revealed the first full color, full size pages of his long-awaited return to the comics world, “Batman: Cacophony”. This three-part miniseries features the art of longtime pal and Askew star in his own right, Walt Flanagan, and a new story/script by Kevin himself, featuring the return of a villain of his own creation. Several other stars of the Batman universe will appear (as evidenced in the pages above). Issue #1 arrives in comic stores EVERYWHERE next week, and now’s the time to reserve your copies.

The books arrive in several variant covers as well, though what you see above are the cover and pages from the mainstream issue #1, courtesy of Kevin Smith. Enjoy. On Saturday, Kevin and Walt will be holding a limited signing session in Red Bank, NJ where you can be the first to own the book, meet the creators, and get it signed. If you’re anywhere within driving distance, you’ll wanna be there.

We’re sure we speak for everyone as we congratulate Kevin and Walt, and welcome them back to the world of comics this week.

“Batman” Signing This Saturday @ Stash East!

November 5th @ 7:41 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We’re betting that a bunch of you are heading into Red Bank, NJ this Friday night for Kevin’s big return to the Count Basie for a good ‘ol fashioned Q&A — No cameras or agenda this time, like the 37th birthday Threevening Q&A, just a BIG sold out evening with Kevin Smith taking the stage, telling a bunch of brand new tales, and taking your questions. We’ll see you there.

Now, with this new announcement, we’ve got a reason for you all to buy up hotel rooms in and around the town — You’ll wanna stick around until Saturday, as Kevin Smith, along with artist Walt Flanagan, will be signing copies of their highly anticipated new comic “Batman: Cacophony” at the historic Secret Stash East in downtown Red Bank!

For those of you who have never been to the Stash, this is your perfect opportunity to see the place, the props, and of course, meet the man himself in person. DO NOT MISS IT.

A few things to know – First up, the event runs from 2 PM til 5 PM. The line WILL BE CAPPED. The guys gotta stop at 5, so GET THERE EARLY (in other words, way before 2 PM) to secure your spot. If you get there too late, you risk missing you chance to get your book signed. If you want to buy anything else there and get it signed, OR bring something along, YOU CAN GET ONLY UP TO TWO OTHER ITEMS SIGNED. This is not to give you a hard time, but rather, to allow everyone in line the time and a chance to get their stuff signed, too. You MUST buy a copy of the Batman comic as well – But the price is, of course, very affordable.

For full details on this event, visit the official site . Hope to see a bunch of you there. PLEASE HEED OUR WARNING, LINE UP EARLY! We don’t want you to miss your chance to get a book signed, and Red Bank events are always insanely popular.

“Batman: Cacophony” Rarities – Get Them Thru The Stash…

October 16th @ 10:54 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • As comic book collectors, we realize the fun and value of owning variant covers for books that hit shelves — So, it was with great joy that we read the announcement that Kevin’s new “Batman: Cacophony” series would feature TWO variant covers, in addition to the original, maintstream covers, for each of the three installments. (A variant, by the way, is simply the same book with a different exclusive cover, made in much lesser numbers than the standard cover). Would you like to know more?

Okay, you’re still here. Cool. So, getting these variant covers will prove tough, and here’s why — Retailers will get limited copies of each variant. One variant of issue #1 is 1 in 25, meaning that shops who order 25 books will get only ONE of the variants to go with it. The sketch covers are twice as rare, meaning only 1 for every 50 shipped out will be of this style.

So what’s a collector to do? Hit our online Secret Stash, of course — You can now pre-order all three issues of the book (inlcuding a great deal on a signed set of books 1-3). Issue #1’s variant covers are also up for pre-order, so forget seeking them out at local comic shops, and get them through the Stash along with a signed lithograph for the bargain prices of $20 and $40 respectively.

These make great gifts for yourself or the comic book fan in your life. The series is sure to hit the hot charts in Wizard and break a bunch of records.

Get your orders in today and reserve your copies from the first run!

A Film, A DVD, and A Comic – It’s a Fall View Askew Trifecta!

October 14th @ 10:20 pm | 1 Comment » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • In reporting all the news and the excitement over “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”, we haven’t been talking about two other MAJOR media events coming from Kevin and View Askew this Fall.

First up, a Two-Disc Special Edition DVD that we were pleased as punch to see on the News Askew office desks today — “A Threevening With Kevin Smith”. It hits stores on Tuesday the 21st – It’s hitting our DVD players tonight. Sure, we were there in person, but we can’t wait to see it all cut together. The disc art is sweet and promises over 5 hours of uncut material. Goodbye, sleep. We’ll have an advanced review and new screenshots before the disc hits the streets. Thanks to our friends at Genius for sending these on. Wanna see it early? More details in an upcoming story. Read on.

Then, of course, there is the View Askew event of 2008 – “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” hits theaters in North America on Friday, October 31st. Be there. We’re smelling a record-breaking weekend here.

Finally, rounding out the big three, early November brings Kevin’s long awaited return to comics, with art by Walt Flanagan – “Batman: Cacophony”. Not only is it the first time Kevin has written for the Batman character, the book returns his unique Green Arrow villain. We’re gonna be scooping up variant covers galore where we can. A few more details on the books in a story below.

Kevin’s latest blog entry today has a few words on everything. Among the post, he reveals that we’ll see him on The Tonight Show this Friday, October 17th. The film’s got a few premiere events happening next week as well. Here’s a sample:

We’re inching ever closer to that October 31st release date, folks. I’m doing “The Tonight Show” Friday, then the junket all weekend, and the Premiere on Monday the 20th at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. After that, I head east for some Devils’ games and a NY premiere at CMJ on the 23rd, then a homecoming of sorts in Pittsburgh, where we’ll debut the flick we shot there last winter. Then, back home for release week.

Meanwhile, in the midst of all this “Zack and Miri” stuff, I forgot this

was coming out as well – That’s the birthday Q&A from last year’s Count Basie show. Hits stores a week from today.

And for you comic book folks, this

comes out at the start of November.

Big month around here. Hope ya’ll can come out and support the flick

Read the full blog entry, titled “Soon, There Will Be Porno”, over at the Boring-Ass Life diary site or Myspace.

You’ll get all the photos and links to go with Kev’s words.
