- Entertainment Weekly honors the great “Clerks” among their list of the “25 Great 25 Comedies in the Past 25 Years”. The film is among some great company, with “Ghostbusters” at #1 and two Seth Rogen flicks also among the winners.
21. CLERKS
With its cruddy lensing and sound, Kevin Smith’s way-low-budget debut feels like a bootleg copy of an adolescent mind.
- The Onion’s AV Club features a new interview with the hilarious Craig Robinson, which includes these two questions about “Zack and Miri” :
AVC: You were in Zack And Miri Do A Porno with Seth Rogen. You’ve both worked extensively with Judd Apatow, who is famous for encouraging improvisation, where Kevin Smith is known for discouraging ad-libbing. Did Smith allow improvisation on Zack?
CR: Definitely. This was supposed to be the first movie he did that on. He just told us to go for it, to do our thing. I wouldn’t have guessed that he’d ever discouraged improvisation, but I guess he’s just used to doing scenes down to the letter. He was very encouraging about doing improv at this particular time.
AVC: Were there any particular improvisations you were especially proud of?
CR: There were a couple of things. Tisha Campbell came out with both guns blazing. She was going off. She was totally off-book, so I just had to catch up with her and go with her toe-to-toe. Kevin’s direction was that at first I was kind of stunned, but then I think, “Are you going to take that?” So I’m like, “Oh yeah, here we go.” Then the titty auditions, that was all improv. Kevin just told us to start here, then end up somewhere else.
Read the whole thing at AV Club.
- Hustler Magazine’s March 2009 issue took the now iconic stick figure U.S. poster artwork for “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” and lampooned it in their latest issue with their own comedic take. Hit the thummnail for a NSFW look. We’re not sure if the tagline is an attempted dig, but “Porno” actually had quite a bit of onscreen nudity and sex scenes, so we assume it’s just about the ad itself.
- “Zack and Miri” show up in ScrippsNews “Top 10 Film Picks for 2008” :
7. “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”
Writer/director Kevin Smith found his stroke once again with this riotous and surprisingly heartfelt comic yarn about a platonic couple (Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks) who discover they’re in love while making a nudie flick. The movie encapsulates Smith’s heedless joy of filmmaking. - IFC’s feature “The Curious Cameography of Matt Damon” cites the actors brief stints in “Jersey Girl” and “Chasing Amy” :
“Jersey Girl” (2004)Continuing his streak of playing #2s, Damon reunited with his “Dogma” director Kevin Smith for a bit of déjà vu. Shortly before he became a household name with “Good Will Hunting,” Damon took a minor role in “Chasing Amy” as “Shawn Oran – Executive #2,” an MTV producer who tries to lure Holden and Banky (Ben Affleck and Jason Lee) to adapt their comic book for TV. In “Jersey Girl,” Lee and Damon sit across from Affleck’s Ollie Trinke as PR execs #1 and #2, respectively, who interview Trinke for a job. Smith laments on the DVD commentary, “You don’t know how disheartening it is to be at a test screening and get cards back where like ‘scene liked most: Jason Lee and Matt Damon’ because you’re like dude, they were in the movie for a minute.”
- We like this brief essay on the “Clerks” cartoon by a scooper analysing ABC’s penchant for promoting new shows (when looking at the recent news of a “Fables” animated series on the network):
The “Clerks: The Animated Series” scenarioThis is by far the most depressing of the three scenarios. The network might initially give support to the show in the conceptual phase even though they’re not entirely sold on it. Once the show has got a few episodes in the can, the network executives will balk at the prospect of giving it even the tiniest bit of support.
This has happened many times before with other shows, I’m certain, but there is one particularly ugly example that comes to mind for me. I’m sure a lot of you are familiar with movie writer/director Kevin Smith. Back in the early part of the decade he was approached by ABC to have his very first film, “Clerks”, translated into an animated series. Even though Kevin’s involvement with the project was minimal compared to that of his films the project looked good on paper. It had Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson & Jason Mewes reprising their roles as Dante, Randal & Jay, so what could go wrong? Everything!
First of all, the often vulgar “Clerks” was a concept that was not at all compatible with ABC, which is owned by Disney. If it had been optioned by a cable network like Comedy Central or Cartoon Network there was a chance it would have translated quite well to the small screen. Even the Fox network could have made it work, given their success with shows like “The Simpsons” & “Family Guy”. But because ABC took it on the show’s producers attempted to transform “Clerks” into something it definitely wasn’t: a normal animated sitcom. It ended up being such a watered-down version of the source material that it turned off a lot of Kevin Smith’s normally loyal and forgiving fanbase (myself included) and viewers unfamiliar with Smith’s other work just didn’t connect with it.
It doesn’t help that ABC seemed to revel in making a bad situation worse. It delayed the premiere of the series from early Spring to Summer, then it made the decision to air the fourth episode of the series as the pilot episode. The network then aired the second episode, which was a “flashback” episode with the flashback sequences referring almost solely to what was intended to be the first episode. With seemingly the entire deck stacked against it, “Clerks: The Animated Series” was cancelled after merely two out of the six completed episodes having aired.

- The immortal Randal Graves shows up in Empire’s list of the “100 Greatest Movie Characters” :
“This job would be great if it wasn’t for the fucking customers.”Randal Graves
Played By: Jeff Anderson
Film: Clerks
Why He’s On The List: Randal is the voice of countless generations – anyone who’s had a shitty customer service job in their early twenties will understand his attitude, wishing they could have articulated their frustration with his artful profanity and supreme disregard for, well, anything. But the key to Randal is that he doesn’t necessarily hate his job, it’s just that he remembers not to care.
Finest Hour: Randal ignores a customer and her small child while he phone-orders a long list of sordidly titled porn films from a distributor. When he reaches the end of the lengthy spiel, he dismissively asks “Oh, and what was the one you wanted again?”
- More crazy IMDB rumor mill – We would call the probability of this about 10 percent, but IMDB (often unreliable) now lists Kevin as joining Jason Mewes in the cast for the hot-chicks-as-guys prison drama “K-11”. Mewes was mentioned on board via MTV News recently, so we beleive that one, though Kevin’s involvement has not been confirmed by any reliable source.
- Watch for new Askewer Craig Robinson among the star-studded cast of Funny or Die’s 3-minute “Prop 8: The Musical”, new to the site this week. Another reason to watch – Mark Shaiman, who co-wrote the hilarous “South Park” musical feature film, worked on this one as well.
- Mewes in the news – Some digging confirmed that filming on “Silent But Deadly” ended in Canada a couple of months ago. This article from Chatham Daily News reveals some insight on the film’s financing and distribution hopes. Sounds like we’ll be seeing the movie, in which Mewes plays a silent killer, sometime in 2009.
- And last, but certainly not least, we’ll make it a double shot of Mewes news – His vampire comedy “Netherbeast, Incorporated” now has an official DVD release date – January 6, 2009, less than a month away! Box art and a press release here:

“Shaun of the Dead” fans rejoice! Finally another brilliant horror comedy to win over your undead hearts. The Ronalds Brothers NETHERBEAST INCORPORATED is an offbeat hilarious comedy with a quirky twist on the vampire tale set in modern day corporate America. Employees of Berm-Tech Industries, Inc. have kept the family secret for a long time. For years it has been business as usual, until the top vampire in charge (Darrell Hammond Saturday Night Live) contracts a dreaded disease, becomes senile forgetting that he s a vampire and starts killing off other vampire colleagues. A human efficiency expert (Judd Nelson Breakfast Club) and “Dead Mike’s” replacement (Amy Davidson TV s 8 Simple Rules) are invited to work at Berm-Tech but soon they discover that some of their associates (Dave Foley TV s Kids in the Hall, Newsradio, Jason Mewes Clerks 1 & 2, Zack and Miri Make a Porno and Steve Burns TV s Blue s Clues) are not what they appear to be.
This is one of those flicks that we didn’t have a chance to see in this part of the country, so we’re looking forward to catching the DVD. Stay tuned as we’re hoping to have some copies to award to lucky News Askew fans, as well. Enjoy the weekend, folks, we’ll see ya back here soon.

- The Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” wisely began picking up the brilliant “Clerks” animated series to air as part of the weekly animation block. Episodes are airing Fridays at 11 PM and repeating 2 days later, Sundays at 10 PM. All times EST so check your local listings. If you haven’t watched the episodes in a while, they play great on repeat viewings and are funny as ever. It’s such a shame we only got a handful as we think the premise could have continued forever. Re-live the dream on Cartoon Network every weekend.
- For those of you collecting all the variant covers of Kevin and Walt’s “Batman” series, a small change to note – Issue #2’s variant cover sketch edition will now feature art by Adam Kubert. Retailers still can only get ONE of these for every 50 standard copies, making them quite rare to snag.
- It appears that “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” stars Mewes and Morgan were at Tao Las Vegas last weekend performing hosting duties at the exclusive club and we missed it! One of your loyal webmasters was in town for a friend’s wedding and had no idea — So, we’ll have to live with this brief report.
- Let’s catch up with a few YouTube Askew bundles of joy today — First up, a dude called “That Fellow in the Coat” dedicates an entire episode to Jay & Silent Bob. Watch the guy devote an entire 7 minutes to a video essay on the duo’s exploits through cinema.
And just in case ya missed it, here’s Matt Damon giving his very candid thoughts on ex-VP candidate Sarah Palin.
- Scooper Garrett from Filmadelphia checks in with a brief report from the recent “Batman: Cacophony” signing at Stash East (the Stash nearest and dearest to our hearts). Take a peek at his brief report which includes a shot of the line and a few other random snaps of fans and the store’s interior.
- Finally today, a group of teens were arrested for smoking pot during a recent Seth Rogen film…And we’ll give ya a hint, it wasn’t “Pineapple Express”! See ya next time…

- The IMDB is prepping for Kevin’s untitled space comedy, projecting a 2011 release date, which seems a LONG time away. Please keep in mind that’s not at all official, just speculation on the site’s part. Nothing relating to the movie has been greenlit or decided at this point.
- The lovely Elizabeth Banks shows up on Entertainment Weekly’s list of top entertainers of 2008. Check out what they had to say right here :
16. ELIZABETH BANKS
Over a few weeks this fall, Elizabeth Banks babysat Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott in Role Models; evinced Laura Bush’s quiet devotion to her hubby in Oliver Stone’s W.; and tackled her first title role, as an amateur porn star, in Zack and Miri Make a Porno — all with enviable ease. After years of thankless roles as The Girlfriend (to Ryan Reynolds, Mark Wahlberg, even a robot Eddie Murphy), the 34-year-old actress is finally Having Her Moment, even if she can’t quite make the poster for Zack and Miri. ”It’s a f—ing drawing of a girl,” Banks says with a full-bodied laugh. ”I can’t even get myself on the f—ing poster. What moment am I having?” We have a feeling, with her wide range and genuine charm, she’s going to be having plenty more chances to be front and center. - Seth Rogen names CLERKS as the film that changed his life in THIS article from the New York Post.
- And finally today, CLERKS get a nice mention on Den On Geek‘s list of movies that were followed by a sequel over a decade after it’s original release:
Clerks
Kevin Smith isn’t really a director you’d associate with sequels, and thus eyebrows were raised when he announced he was revisiting his debut film, Clerks, to find out what had happened to Randal and Dante since we met them last. Leaving a 12 year gap between the films, this gave Smith the space to build some genuine evolution into his characters, and he gladly took the chance to do so. And while the worldwide box office take of $26m may not raise eyebrows, set against the sizeable business it’s done on DVD and the low production budget, it’s proven to be a very profitable enterprise. More than that, though, Clerks II was a terrific sequel, and one that makes the rumours of a third movie later down the line very interesting indeed…

- “Clerks” tops Always Watching’s list of Top 25 independent films made for less than a million bucks:
CLERKSBudget: $27,000 (before additional post production work)
A god amongst film geeks, beloved filmmaker and comic book writer Kevin Smith has amassed an arsenal of 6 movies to fit into his View Askewniverse, and that world begins and ends with Clerks. Though many people have an almost instinctive adverse reaction to black-and-white cinema nowadays, Clerks proves that when it comes to comedy, a strong focus on dialogue is almost always the primary route to success. And with the film taking place almost entirely within a convenience store where Kevin Smith worked at the time, the concentration staying on dialogue above anything else allowed for the young filmmaker to keep the budget as minimal as possible. That’s not to say paying for the movie was an easy task. According to Wikipedia, in order to acquire the funds for the film, Smith sold a large proportion of his extensive comic book collection, maxed out eight to ten credit cards with $2000 limits, dipped into a portion of funds set aside for his college education and spent insurance money awarded for a car he and Jason Mewes lost in a flood.
Since the film had to be shot at night when the store was closed, Smith needed to come up with a way to explain why the steel shutters were closed, and in turn led to a great scene in the film where Dante discovers somebody put gum in the locks and has to put up a big sign written in shoe polish that says, “I Assure You, We’re Open.” Situations like these just go to show how being forced to think outside the box can actually lead to much more rewarding outcomes.
The entire list is made up of what we’d call pretty much must-see movies, so we highly recommend you check it out and pick up some of the titles as your schedule allows. Our kudos to the authors of this piece for a fantastic list.
- Hey, while we’re talking about “Clerks”, here’s a new concept that came to us from /Film today – A graphical representation of dialogue in a film.
The site uses “Clerks” as an example and takes a color square to represent a characters speaking part, and symbols to indicate profane dialogue. We’re not sure we get the experiment, either, but it’s definitely the first time we’ve seen anything like it. - Kevin does a solid for awesome video streaming site Hulu, which gives users FREE instant access to a huge database of film and TV – Uncut, no less. They’re now streaming up the movie that inspired him to make “Clerks”, “Slacker”, and Kev’s taken a few moments to blog an introduction.
August 2, 1991. The day of my 21st birthday. Most folks elect to cut loose and enjoy the freedom that turning 21 affords. I, however — being a total loser — opted, instead, to take the 50-mile drive up the Jersey Turnpike with my friend Vincent Pereira so we could peep a film reviewed, quite favorably, by J. Hoberman in the Village Voice. It was unheard of in my neck of the woods to drive that far to see a movie (let alone a movie with zero movie stars in it), but the promise of a scene centered on a Madonna pap smear of questionable authenticity was bait enough to lure us from the Jersey ‘burbs into the wilds of Manhattan-after-dark.After overpaying for both parking and popcorn, we settled into what seats we could find together in the packed theater of a midnight screening. And once the trailer for Hal Hartley’s Trust concluded, the Orion Classics logo lit up the screen and introduced me to my future. For the next 100 minutes or so, I was agog. My jaw literally hung open as this shaggy paean to those who follow the road not taken unspooled, offering me a glimpse into a free-associative world of ideas instead of plot, people instead of characters, and Nowheresville, Texas, instead of the usual California or New York settings most movies elected to feature (that “Nowheresville” was really Austin speaks volumes on how culturally bereft I was at the time). That night, director Richard Linklater and his film not only captured my imagination, he (and it) captured my heart — not to mention kick-started my ambition. On the hour-long drive home from the theater that night, I realized what I wanted to do with my life: I wanted to be a filmmaker. That’s the power of Slacker: if you let it, it’ll change your life. It certainly changed mine.
So if you hate me and my films, blame Richard Linklater’s Slacker. And if you love me and my films, thank Richard Linklater for Slacker. Either way, do yourself a favor and watch Richard Linklater’s Slacker here on Hulu. Right now.
Check it out, and then, if you’re in a Hulu-approved region, check out the movie for free, right now. Long live Hulu! - Netflix held a movie watching competition (sounds fun!) which ran a whopping 123 hours! Geeksugar reports on the winners, and Fox News reports that “Clerks” was the third to last film in the Popcorn Bowl.
- Time to let Randal know…The Flying Car is finally here!
- Want to make a Kevin Smith replica out of paper? One scooper shows us how. The end result is quite cool, especially considering it was all done simply with paper! We totally need to try to find the time to construct a couple of these.
- And finally today, given the recent actions on the stock market, we think this photo speaks for itself, though the caption makes it a good newsbite for us today. See ya next time. Good luck to us all, as we watch our stocks and 401k drop drop drop.
If you wanna take your mind off it, “Quarantine” may be a good bet in theaters this weekend — If the film is anywhere near as scary as the Spanish original it’s based on (“[Rec]”, which we checked out and dug a couple months ago), it’ll be a creepy time in the dark while you wait just three shorts weeks for Zack And Miri!

- Entertainment Weekly, who you may recall as the first major entertainment magazine to mention “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” when they published a script page, briefly mentions the movie again in an article on deceptive (or in this case, dead on the money) movie titles.
- We love Empire Magazine, and they love View Askew as well — “Clerks” ranks on their top 500 movies of all time. At #361 to be exact. Check it out along with the complete list at the official Empire website.
- A writer over at 411 Mania presents an essay on the films that make up the Askewniverse this week. In the piece, he runs down each of the movies with a capsule review, excluding Jersey Girl only due to its non-connection with the others.
- That “Zack and Miri” commercial that debuted during SNL over the weekend was spotted in the wild once again – This time, on WWE Monday Night RAW. We’re happy to see the marketing push starting this early, though it seems that it will be a general ramp-up as the release date draws closer. So, expect to see the commercial in choice locations now, and more spots in weeks to come. We’re guessing that the gang bought some airtime during the big NBC comedy premieres tomorrow night, so if you’re wisely tuning into Earl and The Office, watch for the big ad in high def! Just a guess…

- A final note on Kevin’s Woodstock Film Fest appearance next month — While it looks like “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” will screen on October 5th, the press release now lists the date Kevin will receive the Maverick award itself as Saturday, October 4th. Get your tix accordingly for the events you’d like to attend.
- The great Brian O’Halloran, still tops on the good guy list of all the View Askew personalities we’ve met over the years, will once again join ChillerCon as a guest next month, from
October 24th through the 26th. Brian will be on hand to graciously sign autographs, take photos, and meet the fans in support of his horror comedy “Brutal Massacre”. He of course loves meeting all his View Askew fans as well, so be sure and stop by to say hello to one of the greats. The con takes place in Parsippany, New Jersey at the Hilton. Wanna hear more from Brian? Listen to this MP3 podcast from Drunken Zombie where the man is interviewed. - “Clerks” was listed as a choice (and scored third) among the IMDB’s poll asking about the “Best Cult Movies Since 1983”. A very nice score against some tough competition, for sure. Bravo.
- We love JoBlo because of all the reasons they find to put sexy chicks in their web postings, so their latest piece on their favorite slutty characters in film is something worth reading anyway. Two Askew connections as well — In the number 10 spot, Newbie Askewbie Elizabeth Banks scores for her role in “The 40 Year Old Virgin”. In the number 9 postion, Clerks’ Marilyn Ghigliotti ranks for her “37” admissions of guilt.
- Recent new member of the View Askew family Justin Long confirms that there will be a sequel to “Alvin and the Chipmunks” which we assume will also bring back our pal Jason Lee. Long voices the character of Alvin in the film.
- And finally today, a fun photo snapped by a fan while on a trip through Nashville, IL. Seems we can add “farmer” to Jay’s list of talents? See ya next time…

- While the release date is now a closely guarded secret, we can confirm the title for Kevin’s upcoming third Q&A DVD, filmed on his 37th birthday in Red Bank, New Jersey — “A Threevening with Kevin Smith: Sold Out”! More details in a week or so…
- G4TV reports on the Crazy 4 Cult II art show at Gallery 1988 via an 8 minute video from premiere night. A nice new interview outside of the show with Smith and Mos is a highlight – Look at those crowds! You’ll also see a ton of looks at the amazing works that were on display and for sale. Can someone bring this event to the EAST coast as well…PLEASE???
- Wanna read more about Affleck’s recent low key political exploits for Obama? The Boston Herald has the details on what he’s quietly been up to.
- DVD supersite The Digital Bits reports that “Fanboys”, in which Kevin has a cameo, will arrive on DVD and Bluray on December 23rd. The film has only had a very small theatrical release, seen by few at festivals and such. We’ll keep you posted as it’s always looked like a fun little flick, shame it didn’t get more of a chance on the big screen.
- Cinematical makes their own comments on Kev’s recent brief quotes to MTV regarding the next proposed Superman film sequel.
- Entertainment Weekly once again remembers View Askew in their latest photo gallery, titled “The Cult 25: The Essential Left-Field Movie Hits Since ’83”. “Clerks” takes the #13 slot:
13. CLERKS (1994)Kevin Smith’s debut, about a day in the life of two service-industry suburbanites, was made for $27,575. It’s hard to tell where all that money went, but the cruddy lensing and muddy sound actually enhance the experience. This spitball of nonstop scatology and pop-cult obsessiveness — what are the ethical implications of killing independent contractors aboard the Death Star? — feels like a bootleg copy of an adolescent mind. - Kevin appeared on KROQ radio’s popular “Kevin & Bean” program yesterday, and as always our good pal Will has the hookup with the audio. Listen in as Kev sits in with the guys — Runtime is around 30 minutes. We’re now listening as we continue to write the update…
- With almost a full year until the next Judd Apatow involved comedy, New York Entertainemnt publishes a list of “Five Movies to Get You Through the Coming Judd Apatow Drought”. One of them is, of course, “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”:
Release Date: October 31
Featured Apatow acolytes: Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Craig Robinson.
Apatovian plot: Rogen and Banks star as lifelong friends down on their luck. After a fifteen-year high-school reunion underscores their lack of accomplishment, they decide to start their own amateur porn company. Then, inexplicably, they fall in love.
How Judd Apatow would’ve made it funnier: Jay Baruchel as a high-maintenance mustached porn actor with performance anxiety. - Kevin’s brief “Watchmen” comments continue to spread across the web and keep the film in the news. Entertainment Weekly was unable to get Kevin to elaborate any further, though also speculate the film will see running time cuts (sadly, the 3 hour version will likely never be seen in theaters, we’ll have to wait for DVD). G4TV also runs a similar article on the subject, and features the story in their daily video wrapup.
- And hey, while we’re on the subject, Kevin caught yet ANOTHER top secret, highly anticipated flick, the JJ Abrams reboot of “Star Trek”, in a private screening. Trekmovie.com has the story.
- We posted scans of it a few weeks back, but in case you didn’t read them, Wizard has now placed the excellent “Guardian Devil Director’s Commentary” piece on their website.
- A blogger from UK’s “The Guardian” writes of his experience meeting Kevin for a brief interview during the recent VisionFest 08.
- Via an online poll down on their left sidebar, Paste Magazine asks what your favorite Seth Rogen film (so far) is — No choice for “Zack & Miri”, which we assume is because it isn’t out yet, though there IS a spot for “Other”.
- Seth Rogen hits MSN’s list of “Summer Winners”, with a drop mention of “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”.
- A new version of “Clerks” on DVD has surfaced in Australia, basically a trimmed-down 1 disc version of the superior “Clerks X” set we have in the States. If you don’t have a region-free player tho, at least it’s something.
This goes through select sections of the comic saga and features comments from Smith, Palmiotti, and Quesada. Hardcover editions to celebrate the 10th anniversary are streeting on September 10th. Here’s a look at the main book as well as the special variant. We want!

- SciFi Wire, the official news site of the SciFi Channel, votes “Clerks” as the best “Star Wars” spoof in history. Yep, even beating out “Spaceballs” (No. 2):
1. Clerks, film, available on DVD. Perhaps the most eloquent Star Wars geek on record, director Kevin Smith crafted dialogue about the issue of contract labor on the second Death Star in Star Wars: Episode VI–Return of the Jedi. Collateral damage or deserving collaborators? The debate rages on. - Don’t forget, folks, Crazy 4 Cult 2, this Friday at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. This site runs a few more images from the hundreds they’ll have on hand this Friday, expect a big crowd but some fantastic art up for grabs. Man would it be cool to hang some of these works of art on the walls.
- We’re only running this as a newsbite as rumor control — According to the often error-prone IMDB, the actor Johann Benét has been attached to “Red State” for a 2010 release. Considering the last news we heard from Kevin was that they were still in the final stages of getting all the funding they needed, we don’t think anyone’s being cast just yet. Plus, we also believe if things work out, we’d see the flick late in 2009, not 2010. Consider this rumor crushed unless we let ya know otherwise.
- And finally today, okay, so this is SORT OF the flying car – Looks like you can own it for $150k next year. And it won’t even cost you any body parts or being violated by deviant scientists. Nice. See ya next time.
