Lots of love continuing for the New Jersey Devils — It’s great to see that he’s continued to keep hockey on the brain, which should put him in the perfect state of mind as he continues writing “Hit Somebody” this winter. - The new “Pawn Stars for comic book geeks” TV show, starring Wall Flanagan and Bryan Johnson, based in Red Bank’s Secret Stash, has been attached to the AMC network, home of “Breaking Bad”, “Mad Men”, “The Killing” and “The Walking Dead”. The Hollywood Reporter has a few more details.
- Visit the new official site of “Jersey Girl”, and now “The Voice” star Raquel Castro, http://raquelcastro.com. Don’t forget, voting for her performance runs all the way through this Monday morning at 10 AM, so don’t forget to download her performance, or call or text your votes, to keep her in the competition for another week. - Kevin recently hinted he might return to the world of publishing with a new book. No further details yet regarding a topic or theme, but stay tuned. We know that plans are afoot for the “Hit Somebody” script to arrive in chunks for purchase later this summer, but we have a feeling this is something totally different.
- The free tickets for the the first SMoviola, “Valley Girl”, were gone in mere minutes, though here’s some deets on the event which goes down this Saturday, June 11th, at 7:00 PM at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York. Kevin will moderate a Q&A including the director and other special guests (we believe star Deborah Foreman will be there!) right after the film. Don’t have tickets? Most movie bachelor parties promise untold levels of debauchery, but — much like their real-life counterparts — tend to be relatively tame affairs. Leave it to Kevin Smith to film an exception to the rule with Clerks II, which puts audiences in the front row for a donkey show with an unexpected twist. A film so gleefully profane that Joel Siegel infamously walked out of his screening, Clerks II ultimately failed to capture the cultural zeitgeist the way its predecessor did, but for some critics, it represented Smith’s growth as a filmmaker. Calling it “Probably the funniest film Smith has done since the original,” Joe Utichi of FilmFocus argued, “it’s chock full of childish humour and witty observations on pop culture — but there’s something real beneath all of that as well. Something, dare it be said, touching.”

- Details on that “Rocketeer” event sponsored by Disney, hosted by Kevin, are now available. Kevin will host a panel discussion with members of the film’s cast and crew on Tuesday, June 21, starting at 6:45 PM. Another can’t-miss event, for a great flick — Event check-in begins at 6:45 p.m. at the El Capitan Theatre, 6838 Hollywood Blvd; panel and screening begins at 7:30 p.m. The Walt Disney Archives exhibit will follow the screening from 9:45 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the Hollywood Museum located at 1660 N. Highland Ave.
- Remember way back when….When Kevin wrote a “Six Million Dollar Man” film script? That one takes us back to the early days of News Askew in the 90’s…Well, much like his Green Hornet script, this one’s now coming to life in the form of a new comic series — Take a look at some beautiful cover art for the project from the legendary Alex Ross, courtesy of Bleeding Cool. Courier Mail reports that Dynamite Entertainment will once again produce the project, though the number of issues or a release date have yet to be announced.
- The original that started it all is back with a new episode — SModcast #169 continues “MALLRATS THRU A GREEN PRISM”, live in Milwaukee.
Help Malcolm Make His Next Movie: “Continental”…
- Malcolm Ingram busted into the Asknewniverse way back in 1996 with “Drawing Flies”, and went on to direct the feature “Tail Lights Fade” before discovering a love for documentary filmmaking. After he followed the entire production of “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” with a handheld camera, he made the acclaimed “Small Town, Gay Bar” and “Bear Nation”. You may also know him from the SModcast Network’s “Blow Hard” podcast. Now, he’s raising funds to make his next documentary, “Continental”, and you can help make it all happen.
Through the use of a new crowd funding site called Kickstarter, you can donate as little as 5 bucks and receive special thanks, with recognition all the way up to film credits, producer credits, special prizes, and more. Malc’s looking to raise $20,000 to help fund a trip to Australia to film the backbone interview for the feature. But don’t let us tell you about it, here’s Mr. Malcolm Ingram himself with all the details.

- As Kevin talks to the press regarding the “Red State” tour, we see a lot of the same questions and similar interviews showing up on the web, but we enjoyed this different take on it titled “How I Gave Kevin Smith The Chills with a Lamppost”. A snippet:
…Pretty much every thing you need to know about their profession and relationship comes across in that short conversation. Ever since I saw Chasing Amy, I’ve frequently used that as an excellent example of how a film can build character by showing people going about their jobs. Seldom in movies or television shows do you see people actually working, unless they’re surgeons, police officers and trial lawyers.
So when I finally got Kevin Smith on the phone, I briefly told him about that, and it said, “That rocks. It gives me chills to hear you say that. Chasing Amy came out in 1997, so it was 1996 when we filmed it. I remember that day, and how we started the scene with just the phone ringing. Then I thought about it and said, ‘Hey, start out by saying something about his work. Compliment his lamppost,’ and that’s what we used. For you to remember that and say something 15 years later, that’s where the payoff is.”

- The people behind this look back at 2010 flicks really should be hired by the Oscars or at least the MTV awards to throw together film clippage — It’s an amazing look back at the films produced or released this year, and a must-watch (and yes, it’s got a little “Cop Out” in there, too).
- Kevin says that the new Weinstein deal announced last week makes the long-awaited (and in our opinion, superior) “Jersey Girl Extended Cut” Bluray a “real possibility”.

We especially love that last comment and “Outland” analogy. It really does seem that gradually, all the greats from View Askew past and present have been stopping by the SModcastle or the recording studio to check in for an episode or even a series. We’re looking forward to the days we see the likes of Affleck, Lee, and others recording special episodes.
For those of you a little behind on “Babble On”, just to summarize — The show’s become so huge that it’s moved to the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club at Universal Citywalk at least through the end of the year with a standing Friday night engagement. As you can see, it’s already selling out. If you have the means, get there and see what you have been missing. The show is absolutely hilarious.
SModcast Network and SModcastle continue to get e-ink as well.
Finally, for those wondering when they’ll get to hear the Gaiman/Palmer special, wait no more — The official site for this 3-hour event has gone live. The show will eventually be free like all SModcasts remain, however, for its debut, we’re asking for a charitable donation of 90 cents and up, per chapter (3 chapters total) which benefits The Wayne Foundation. In chapter one, hear Smith talk candidly with Gaiman and Palmer. In Chapter 2, hear Palmer rock the stage. And finally, in Chapter 3, hear Gaiman read! All starting this Monday. …I’ve seen a million interviews. Live and on TV. The subject is promoting something, and certain topics are taboo, and truth rarely comes out. Kevin’s only interested in the truth. He extracts it. And one got more insight into the struggle to be an artist last night at the Smodcastle than at any panel at any music conference ever.
You see it’s about the people. They’re a special breed. And those who last are not about the money, because it’s too hard for it to only be about the money. They were always a little bit off, always living in an alternative reality in their heads. And it’s only when they laid this down that they found out huge swaths of people identified.
