Freddy vs. “Jay”-son…

  • It’s impossible to count the amount of email we got on this, but many of you noticed an uncanny resemblance of one of the characters in this past weekend’s #1 film, “Freddy Vs. Jason”. Yes, the stoner character in the film certainly does seem to be closely modeled to View Askew’s very own Jay Mewes.
But hey, it’s just not site readers taking notice. Check out this excerpt from Elvis Mitchell’s NY Times review of the film:
This movie expends so much energy setting up the back-story that it will leave those in attendance bored because the battle promised in the title doesn’t start for more than an hour. Meanwhile, the residents of Santa Metro — or whatever this Canadian hamlet standing in for a small American town is supposed to be called — are eliminated one by one. They include a rip-off of Jason Mewes’s on-screen persona in “Jay and Silent Bob,” as well as Kelly Rowland, whose stumbling performance rivals the tumble her solo CD took from the charts. (She alone keeps “Freddy” from being as white as the royalty issue of Vanity Fair.)

Heck, this blog critic felt that it was an even bigger conspiracy.
Personally, this reviewer actually dug the film. Having grown up loving those characters, it’s certainly strange to see them in a film here in this century, especially with today’s slick visuals, but there was something fun and campy about watching the two chracters in the same film — And hey, they managed to work the sex and violence in there pretty well, just like old times. If anything, hopefully the big box office weekend for the film will convince studios that the horror genre isn’t dead, and allow them to put more cash into production on some new ones. Next month, the way that new releases Cabin Fever (which genre fans will love) and then October’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake fare should also set the tone for horror’s future.
Will we see a View Askew horror film someday? Perhaps not from Kevin, but hey, Vincent Pereira, are you listening?
