  • FOLLOWUPS FROM YESTERDAY: Most would agree that the Spawn’s reference to “LeFors” was more a “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” homage than a Mallrats homage. We agree. Kevin’s character in Mallrats has been thought to have been a B&S reference as well, so if anything, the mention in Spawn was once removed from ‘Rats. Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, by the way, hits DVD shelves this tuesday. Coincidence?
  • Also, the Harvard website has a much better article on Ben & Matt’s rally apperance last week. You can read it HERE.
  • DirecTV will begin airing Dogma on its Direct Ticket pay per view system on June 23rd. The flick’s just been mastered from the pan & scan version only (alas, no Dolby Digital letterboxed copy will be offered). It will premiere, as most new PPVs, as an all day ticket, which means you can order it once and watch it on all the channels that air it.
  • We may have stopped updating the Dogma: Rumor Control site (we began working on the new page you’re viewing now right after the film’s release, and something had to give) but the official Dogma website is still going strong. They’ve just added a bunch of new behind the scenes pics from the flick, with commentary written once again by Kevin himself. Be sure and stop by the site to take a look.
  • Humor website Delta Source has printed an amusing article that speculates on what it would have been like had Kevin Smith been asked to take over writing duties on the next Star Wars flick:
Lucas turns to Smith for Episode II Re-write

Red Bank, NJ

With final details on the Episode II script still not complete, Star Wars guru George Lucas, has turned to independent film god Kevin Smith for help with rewrites. Lucas purportedly got the idea to consult Smith after a late night viewing of Smith’s 1995 film, Mallrats; in which Smith’s on screen persona Silent Bob attempts the Jedi mind trick.

“I knew right there that Kevin was the perfect man for the job,” Lucas went on to explain. “He just showed so much insight into Star Wars with just one little scene that I felt I could trust him to polish my script for Episode II.”

“F***ing A,” elaborated Smith. I’m writing f***ing Star Wars, what the f*** else do you want me to say?”

While reports from the Lucas camp did not reveal many details, Smith was happy to devulge what he had in store for Episode II. “First off, Jar Jar has to go.” Smith explained. “I can’t say how, but I think most hard core fan boys will be happy with the results.” Smith also intends to add some new characters into the script rewrite, including Senator Rick Derris, who will be an antagonist in the on-screen romance of leads Amidalia and Anakin.

Additionally, Smith’s trademark duo of Jay and Silent Bob will go from their previous role of prophets (in Smith’s Dogma) to Jedi knights. Actor Jason Mewes (Jay) was happy to explain his role.

“Holy S***!!! We’re gonna be tokin’ up blunts with mutha f***ing Yoda and shit!” Mewes declared. “We’re gonna have light sabers, Jedi bongs, and get the best pussy in the galaxy. Cause me and my hetero padawan, Bob, are all about the clam. After that we’re gonna get some f***ing Colt 45 and chll with our boy Lando at the Mos Eisley Cantina. F*** Yeah! Nooch!”

Also expect some jabs from Smith toward Disney, who recently burned Smith on a deal regarding Smith’s animated Clerks series on Disney-owned ABC. “I still have to work all the details in to the script,” said Smith, “but you can expect a few shots at The Mouse to be in there.” Smith’s re-writes are reported to be finished by June in time for filming to begin at Fox Studios in Australia in early July.

  • Finally today, happy birthday to George Carlin, 63 years and still going strong.
