  • Probably the most scooped story EVER — Dwight Ewell (of Chasing Amy’s “Hooper X” fame appeared on the new Comedy Central series “Contest Searchlight” last night as a contestant. The show is sort of a mock-up of Project Greenlight, where folks pitch their own comedy series ideas. This scooper probably summed it up most verbosely:
Dwight (Hooper X) Ewell was involved in the “Contest Searchlight” on Comedy Central. For the uninformed, this was a contest/television show that Denis Leary initiated to have regular folks submit story and show ideas. Then, three finalists out of six semi-finalists would be chosen and the final three would pitch their ideas to Leary and his crew.

Then, the final finalist would have their show idea developed into a comedy series on Comedy Central. Did I mention that the entire process would be filmed for our entertainment?

Mr. Ewell was one of the six (or was it seven?) finalists. You couldn’t miss him: He was the only black guy there and he was dressed in a very colorful garment. Unfortunately, he was not chosen to be one of the three finalists and he was disappointed. He confessed to the camera that at first there was a small part of him that thought: “White folks.”

He definitely had more class than the chick who tore into Leary with a massive whining assault. She was trying to bully him into telling her why her project wasn’t chosen. He replied, “Don’t scream at me at my own fucking contest.”

Alas, we don’t know what Mr. Ewell’s idea was, but whatever it was, it could not have been worse than the final three ideas and the one that was actually chosen. I could get into the Final Three, but I don’t have the time or the energy.

I don’t know what to make of the show itself. With other “reality” shows, I’m always skeptical as to what’s real and what isn’t. If everything on this show is real, then man, showbiz is full of assholes. If you’re interested, the show is on Wednesdays at 9:30/8:30 Central on Comedy Central.

As per Comedy Central, the show will be rerun a LOT, so just tune into the station, probably this weekend, and give it a look. Is it real or not? Decide for yourself! You can view Dwight Ewell’s pitch right HERE. Our take? The whole thing’s staged. But still a great show.

  • We’re happy to report that Kevin took some time before starting “Jersey Girl” to head into Atlanta, Georgia this past Sunday to record a brand new episode of Roadside Attractions for “The Tonight Show”. No word yet on an airdate, but they usually turn these things around rather quickly. Heck, maybe Kevin can sit down with Jay after the clip and chat about “Jersey Girl”! We’ll keep ya posted.

  • JoBlo.com’s Dreamcatcher San Diego Con coverage is apparently also stacked with View Askew references.

  • A company called RCV is releasing some rather barren View Askew DVDs in Europe — Jay & Bob and Chasing Amy have some basic features as this site indicates. Time to track down those region-free DVD players and nab yourself some Region 1 discs, folks!
  • Check the last panel of this new webtoon, “Drawing The Line” for a classic Clerks reference. We hear there’s more on the way.
  • Speaking of cartoons, apparently there’s some View Askew fans at the U.S. Air Force Academy. This little toon appeared in “E-Dodo”, their net-based underground newspaper. Guess the jokes are a little inside, though.

  • Thanks again to all who took a shot at the big prize for being hit number 10 million. Our winner Seth is from Virginia, and will be awarded a FEATURED walk-on role in Kevin’s upcoming “Jersey Girl”. Nicely done, Seth. He’s been a longtime fan (since Clerks) and is geniunely excited about the prize. We hope to have more contests like this in the future, so keep coming back, and thanks again for making 10 million possible.

  • Something Awful yet again had a View Askew-related parody on their site recently — This time, Mooby shows up in a rather funny mock CD-cover.
  • A fansite for comedy group “The State” (who had a hilarious show on MTV quite a few years back) conducted a survey about the show’s fans, and in the “Favorite movies” portion, all movies from the Askewniverse were ranked (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma are all in the top 10).
  • We hear that you can pre-order that Spider-Man boxed set (with the Kevin/Stan Lee DVD inside) for as low as $39.98 at places like Walmart.com, etc.
  • If you’re following the Daredevil-related news, Joblo ran an excellent piece on the panel in San Diego recently, that’s even got a couple View Askew references in it:
“One of the funniest parts of the panel came when one obvious Kevin Smith junkie got up and said to Affleck: ‘Ben, you were the bomb in PHANTOMS, yo!’ The crowd got a kick out of that and so did Affleck. ‘Thank you.'”

You can also find a window static of the new DareDevil movie logo up for sale at Ebay. Buy at your own risk, as always, we just mention ’em as we see ’em.

  • Speaking of ebay, wow — If you’ve got some CRAZY deep pockets, you might want to put a bid in on the ORIGINAL cover artwork for Spidey/Black Cat #1. It’s already over $2,000 and still not even reached its reserve price. Could make a fantastic collector’s item for someone out there though. Check it out!

  • Here’s a scan from Request magazine (not the best quality we’re afraid) on Jason Lee’s upcoming flick, “A Guy Thing”. Click it for the larger version.

  • And finally today, here’s a well-drawn piece of Clerks: The Cartoon/Star Wars fan art. Catch ya next time!

10 MILLION HITS – WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

August 9th, 2002 @ 8:43 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

10,000,000.

  • First off, thanks to ALL of you for making this most incredible milestone possible. In just over 5 years (we started this site back in May of 1997), News Askew has now celebrated over 10 million visits. That’s quite a number. We’ve been keeping close track of the count since day one, and we’re happy to say that it’s always been on the upswing for us, and, as always, YOU make this site possible. So we again must thank you all for your continued support, for spreading the word, and for being the best bunch of fans out there. We never dreamed we’d get this far.

As most of you know, we had a prize at stake for this milestone as well – A featured walk-on role in Kevin Smith’s upcoming “Jersey Girl”. We’re happy to report that we have a confirmed winner to the contest, by the name of Seth Bedwell. We’re waiting to confirm his acceptance of the prize, but if he takes it, the walk-on is his.

The counter did run up pretty fast at the end there, and it was rolled back for any massive cheating throughout the contest. At the end, however, the coutner just went up THAT fast due to the massive amount of folks attempting to hit the magic number.

But don’t fret — If you didn’t win, check the story just below this one for details on how you can still get your mug in the movie.

Again, thanks to ALL of you for playing, and thanks for making News Askew more popular than ever. We’re hoping to be here for many millions more, and hope you’ll stick around (even though the free prizes have gone away for a while). More news later!
