  • Time magazine ran a great article with Bruce Willis discussin DIE HARD 4 and working with Kevin. Check out an excerpt below…
“Bruce Willis is a pimp, dude,” says Kevin Smith, the writer-producer who plays one of the villains in the movie and was such a fan growing up that he had Willis’ pop-blues album, The Return of Bruno, in his car’s cassette player at all times. “Bruce Willis made me start drinking. I’m not a fan of alcohol. But when Bruce Willis sings about golden wine coolers, you have to get your drink on. I showed up at parties with Seagram’s wine coolers, and people would say, ‘What are you, crazy? We have a keg. We have vodka.’ But no. I’m Bruce Willis smooth.”

Twentieth Television Sells Emmy-Winning Series MY NAME IS EARL To TBS

Sitcom to Make Its Cable Syndication Debut in Fall 2009

Twentieth Television has reached a multi-year licensing agreement for MY NAME IS EARL, announced Bob Cook, President and COO of Twentieth Television. Beginning in September 2009, the critically acclaimed sitcom will be presented in syndication on TBS, joining the cable network’s lineup of popular comedies. Also included in the deal are digital rights for broadband streaming and on-demand.

In making the announcement, Cook stated, “MY NAME IS EARL is a quality program, whose strong comedic writing and performances have earned it a cadre of dedicated viewers and awards. We are thrilled to enter in to this agreement with TBS to bring fans even more chances to watch their favorite ill-fated hero on his quest to amend a lifetime of mistakes.”

Ken Schwab, Senior Vice President of Programming for TBS and sister network TNT, added, “MY NAME IS EARL is a truly unique and very funny comedy that has captured the imagination of both critics and audiences alike. It will make a perfect addition to the TBS line-up, which is the go-to place for the best in television comedy.”

MY NAME IS EARL, returning this fall for its third season on NBC, follows the story of Earl Hickey (Jason Lee, “Almost Famous”), a man who has taken one too many wrong turns on the highway of life. In a twist of fate, Earl wins a small lottery, has an epiphany and sets out to right all the wrongs from his past.

The deal was negotiated by Steve MacDonald, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Basic Cable for Twentieth Television and Jonathan Katz, Senior Vice President of Program Planning and Acquisitions for Turner Entertainment Group, on behalf of Turner Broadcasting.

Joining Earl on his quest to cleanse his karma are his hapless brother Randy (Ethan Suplee, “Cold Mountain”) and the very sexy Catalina (Nadine Velazquez, “The Bold and the Beautiful”). Even Darnell (Eddie Steeples, “Torque”), the owner of the Crab Shack where Earl drinks beer, offers his support. But it’s Earl’s ex-wife Joy (Jaime Pressly, “Not Another Teen Movie”) who won’t help him unless there’s something in it for her.

Created and written by Garcia (”Yes, Dear”), MY NAME IS EARL is executive-produced by Garcia, Buckland (”Medical Investigation,” “Ed”) and Bobby Bowman (”Yes, Dear”). The series is produced by Amigos de Garcia and Twentieth Century Fox Television.

In its first two seasons on the air, MY NAME IS EARL has earned four Emmys, including an Outstanding Writing award for executive producer Greg Garcia (”Yes, Dear”) and an Outstanding Directing award for executive producer Marc Buckland (”Medical Investigation,” “Ed”); a Directors Guild of America Award for Buckland; a People’s Choice Award; a Television Critics Association Award; and a GLAAD Media Award. In addition, it has received three Golden Globes nominations and four Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations.

  • And finally today in “its about time” news, Stan Lee will finally be released as an action figure from Marvel Comics. Check out the story HERE.

Kevin Interviews Bruce Willis…

  • So where you gonna be on Wednesday, June 27th? Well, in a movie theater seat watching “Live Free or Die Hard”, right? The promotions for the flick have been pitch perfect, showing just enough of those major action set pieces, and some of the best John McClane quips we’ve ever heard. Sure, the flick’s got a PG-13 rating, previously unheard of for a Die Hard, though we hear this one pushes that rating real far — Heck, we’re guessing that an “unrated” cut has to exist somewhere, the flick was likely done with both R and PG-13 cuts in mind. EW recently voted the original Die Hard the best action flick of all time, and who’s to blame them? Personally I can remember Die Hard as one of the movies I just HAD to own on VHS back in the day at any cost, and I wore that tape down with way too many viewings.

So, all that said, the fact that Kevin’s now a part of this universe with his role in the new “Die Hard” is super-cool for big fans of the franchise, as we are. With promotions kicking into high gear, Kevin had the chance to sit down for a brand new chat with star Bruce Willis on the Fox lot, and Apple’s got it for ya — A 3+ quickly edited piece of conversation along with more of that trademark Die Hard action. Surf on over and watch two guys from Jersey hang out…and talk about one of the greatest action movie franchises of our time. It’s too bad it didn’t run longer, though we’re holding out hope for an extended cut of this segment on the eventual DVD.

Smith & Mos To Host “Crazy 4 Cult”…

June 18th @ 7:20 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Now here’s some coolness for ya — Kevin’s announced that he and Scott are going to host an art show on July 17th, and the art that’s being featured has the subject of “Cult Movies” – In other words, this is likely to be some of the coolest art that a movie geek has ever laid his or her eyes on. Here’s Kevin from his blog with the scoopage:
There’s an art show that Scott Mosier and I are hosting in L.A. next month. The subject of the show is cult movies, so all the pieces will be themed to cult flicks. Check out the invite (above).

The show will be held at Gallery 1988. Check out some stuff from their video game-themed exhibition entitled “I Am 8 Bit.”

“Crazy 4 Cult” is gonna be a kick-ass show, and it’s absolutely free (unless you wanna buy some artwork, naturally). You can’t miss this! Come one out for the July 17th opening, check out some bad-ass artwork and smoke some cigarettes with me!

More details (just a few though) over at the Gallery’s website.

In which our heroes rock some poker in the back (and liquor up front), opt to talk about the previous SModcast in lieu of new topics, enter “Jaws” as a length of measurement, enjoy an impromptu visit from a cinematic stoner and discuss his spicey endorsement prospects, try to wheel and deal for a starring role as a gay hustler, and enjoy looking at underwear.

Where do ya get it? Why, exclusively over at Quick Stop Entertainment, of course.

‘Clerks’ (1994)

Instead of the stereotypical office, Kevin Smith illustrates the stereotypical corner shop job in his film, “Clerks.” The movie follows Dante Hicks and his buddy Randal Graves as they deal with a typical work day with some atypical problems. We love it when, every time he’s faced with a problem, Dante repeatedly reminds the audience, “I’m not even supposed to be here today.” Who hasn’t been stuck in that type of situation?

  • Kevin showed up in a pool at a beta entertainment site called “Buzzdash”. He’s part of the running for “Favorite Cinematic Kevin”. He’s holding a strong 22% of the vote at presstime, though we figure you may get some votes in to help that along after reading this ‘bite. Get on over and let your digital voice be heard!
  • The famous IMDB has updated their “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” page with a new URL, discussion area, and 2008 release target. We also noticed that a dude named Shawn Patterson is currently listed as the original music dude for “Red State” on its IMDB page. Can’t say for sure how solid that info is this early in the game, though, as we thought Jim Venable might be on board. We’ll see what we can dig up.
  • And finally today, seems that the Emperor has a bit of a problem with those Death Star independent contractors in this new Robot Chicken sketch that premiered on Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” last night. Enjoy! Off to eat some birthday cake…See ya…

“Zack & Miri” / “Red State”: What Do We Know?

June 16th @ 1:32 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin’s been feeling a bit generous lately as far as info on the new projects go, so let’s do some quick interpretations and summations of what’s been revealed in the big Zack and Miri post this week :
  • Jay Mewes will NOT be in “Red State”, but likely appear in a role in “Zack and Miri”. He will NOT play Zack. Miri was likely the character writtien for Rosario Dawson’s voice, though no word yet on if this is 100% true or if she will play the part (though we’re calling this one pretty likely at this point.
  • “Zack and Miri” will have a runtime of AROUND 1:40, by estimates.
  • “Zack and Miri” will take place in Minnesota, but not necessarily film there (though the script calls for snowy weather, so speculation on a locale is rampant). Illinois and Connecticut were named as possibilities by Kevin, due to the potential tax credit they offer for shooting there. Kevin says, “We’re submitting a budget for Illinois. If Weinstein Co. approves it, we’ll more than likely shoot there, and the location of the story will follow suit.”
  • Kevin intends to have Dave Klein shoot both films, with “Zack and Miri” on film (not digital).
  • Kevin is aiming for a completely fresh, new to View Askew cast for “Red State”.
  • The “Zack” character is quite Dante-esque.
  • Hockey will somehow play a part in “Zack and Miri”.
  • Kevin does not intend to appear in any role (large or small) in either “Red State” or “Zack and Miri”.

And there ya have it, folks! Appetites satisfied, for now? No? Okay then, we’ll see what else we can dig up.
