“Zack & Miri” And Kevin Will Kick Off Fantastic Fest!!!

August 25th @ 8:34 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by James Emery, John Whiteaker, Noah Lee

  • Austin, Texas’ “Fantastic Fest” just got even more fantastic this year. Kevin will be there live, in person, to present the US premiere of “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” to open the show! The show takes place on opening night of the fest at the beautiful Paramount Theater in Austin, Texas on SEPTEMBER THE 18th! Afterwards, stick around as Kevin will answer your questions live on the stage, THEN, they’ll have an air humping contest. Yes, you read that right. People will see who can have the best “air sex”. What a night of fun they’ve got set.

Wanna go? You can get your tickets this Saturday, August 30th! Tickets go on sale for “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” at noon CST, Saturday, August 30th and will be available online at http://www.fantasticfest.com, by phone at 1-866-4GET-TIX or at the Paramount Theater Box Office in Austin, Texas. Admission to this show is included for Fantastic Fest badge holders. THIS WILL SELL OUT THIS WEEKEND! If you wanna go, we highly suggest you be near a phone or computer at NOON CST this Saturday.

Aint It Cool News picked up the story and confirms that anyone who has a festival pass will definitely get into the screening. The theater seats 1,200 people, so this will be a HUGE audience and just incredible fun to attend. AICN also picked up Kevin’s very brief “Trek” comments for a story this week. Nothing new there, just the same cryptic quotes. So cool that Kev’s getting to see some of the most anticipated flicks, and cool, considering he’s been known to do the same type of screenings of his own for fellow directors as well.

  • The Movie Blog ranks “Clerks II” in their list of the Top 20 Sequels of All Time – The writer even admits he doesn’t always love Kev’s flicks but the praise on this one is very well expressed and we can easily agree with that:

      #13 – CLERKS 2

To many people Kevin Smith and his films are an acquired taste. To be honest, as much of a fan that I am of Smith, I’m not actually that thrilled with many of his films. Having said that, I honestly think Clerks 2 is one of the sharpest, funniest and yes smartest comedies I’ve seen in a long long time. Smith shows he’s more than just fart and fuck jokes. Clerks 2 has so much heart to it that many people miss. Real issues struggled with by a lot of people entering their mid 30’s, issues of friendship, home, belonging, dreams, all dealt with within the context of Smith’s edgy humor. I unapologetically love this movie.

  • We’d like to send an official attaboy to Mr. Ben Affleck, who will be doing some great carity at the Democratic National Convention this week, even working his love of poker playing into the mix. Nice job, sir!
  • And finally today, Mr. Jason Mewes made a surprise unscheduled stop at Monster Mania last weekend in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and a couple fans were lucky enough to catch the legend for some photos. We’re told he was as welcoming and friendly as always. Watch for Jay coming to a town near you soon as he promotes his upcoming projects.

Affleck To Star In Mike Judge Comedy…

August 23rd @ 4:40 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Justin McGill, Chuck K, Kevin Spellman

  • Variety reports that Ben Affleck has joined the cast of the next film from Mike Judge (creator of “Office Space” and “Beavis & Butthead). The comedy, titled “Extract”. He’ll play a lawyer in the film:

Actor is in negotiations to play the best buddy of Jason Bateman’s character, a flower extract factory owner dealing with workplace problems and a streak of bad luck, including his wife’s affair with a gigolo.

While we didn’t love “Idiocracy”, Judge’s last flick (though the first 10 minutes or so were pretty brilliant), this one sounds like a winner. With Jason Bateman on board, who’s been on a streak of his own these days, we’ll be lining up when this hits screens. Filming begins on Monday.

  • Kevin appeared on KROQ radio’s popular “Kevin & Bean” program yesterday, and as always our good pal Will has the hookup with the audio. Listen in as Kev sits in with the guys — Runtime is around 30 minutes. We’re now listening as we continue to write the update…
  • With almost a full year until the next Judd Apatow involved comedy, New York Entertainemnt publishes a list of “Five Movies to Get You Through the Coming Judd Apatow Drought”. One of them is, of course, “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”:

      Release Date: October 31
Featured Apatow acolytes: Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Craig Robinson.
Apatovian plot: Rogen and Banks star as lifelong friends down on their luck. After a fifteen-year high-school reunion underscores their lack of accomplishment, they decide to start their own amateur porn company. Then, inexplicably, they fall in love.
How Judd Apatow would’ve made it funnier: Jay Baruchel as a high-maintenance mustached porn actor with performance anxiety.

  • Kevin’s brief “Watchmen” comments continue to spread across the web and keep the film in the news. Entertainment Weekly was unable to get Kevin to elaborate any further, though also speculate the film will see running time cuts (sadly, the 3 hour version will likely never be seen in theaters, we’ll have to wait for DVD). G4TV also runs a similar article on the subject, and features the story in their daily video wrapup.
  • And hey, while we’re on the subject, Kevin caught yet ANOTHER top secret, highly anticipated flick, the JJ Abrams reboot of “Star Trek”, in a private screening. Trekmovie.com has the story.
  • We posted scans of it a few weeks back, but in case you didn’t read them, Wizard has now placed the excellent “Guardian Devil Director’s Commentary” piece on their website.
  • This goes through select sections of the comic saga and features comments from Smith, Palmiotti, and Quesada. Hardcover editions to celebrate the 10th anniversary are streeting on September 10th. Here’s a look at the main book as well as the special variant. We want!

  • A blogger from UK’s “The Guardian” writes of his experience meeting Kevin for a brief interview during the recent VisionFest 08.
  • Via an online poll down on their left sidebar, Paste Magazine asks what your favorite Seth Rogen film (so far) is — No choice for “Zack & Miri”, which we assume is because it isn’t out yet, though there IS a spot for “Other”.
  • Seth Rogen hits MSN’s list of “Summer Winners”, with a drop mention of “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”.
  • A new version of “Clerks” on DVD has surfaced in Australia, basically a trimmed-down 1 disc version of the superior “Clerks X” set we have in the States. If you don’t have a region-free player tho, at least it’s something.

“Zack & Miri” In Toronto – GET TIX NOW!!!

August 23rd @ 11:52 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Cameron Tremblay

  • As of 10 AM today, tickets for “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” at the Toronto Film Festival are now on sale!. According to the online order page, the screening will take place Tuesday afternoon, September 9th, at 3:00 PM, new information contrary to what we had heard before. This will be the world premiere of the film. The last time we went up to Toronto, it was to screen “Dogma”, which turned into a MAJOR EVENT with most of the cast on hand. We’re thinking we might see a lot of the same go down for this one.

Premium tickets, which get you into a gala screening such as this one, cost $37.38 and are well worth it — They can be ordered online, by phone at 416-968-FILM or toll-free at 1-877-968-FILM or in person at the TIFFG Box Office at Manulife Centre right now.

We expect this screening to sell out, quite possibly even by the time some of you have read this (it pays to be a weekend News Askew reader or feed subscriber, see?). Good luck — We’re hoping a lot of News Askew fans can end up in the audience for what is sure to be a fantastic screening. Get those tix right now, don’t delay! More news coming up later today. We just wanted to get this out there ASAP.

More EW Love – Kevin Excels In Dual Roles…

August 20th @ 9:28 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Mark Karsteadt

  • Entertainment Weekly once again honors Kevin in a new article and photo gallery, this time citing his talent as an actor-director:

      KEVIN SMITH

      Clerks (1994)

At first, all Smith had was his voice. Didn’t have any money, didn’t have any idea where to put the camera (still doesn’t, many critics would say), but he had that witty, profane, pop culture-soaked voice that made spending all day at a convenience store with slackers Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) into a fun way to pass the time. Smith also gave himself the not-too-taxing role of Silent Bob, which became his signature character.

      Chasing Amy (1997)

The unlikely romance that made stars of Ben Affleck and sidekick Jason Lee, and that gave Smith his biggest acting challenge to date: the monologue that gives the film its title.

      Clerks 2 (2006)

Even slackers have to grow up sometime. That’s the lesson facing Dante and Randal (still in service-industry purgatory 12 years later) and Smith himself, as he closes what looks to be only the first chapter in a long career.

“Batman: Cacophony” – November 12th!

August 20th @ 9:24 pm | 3 Comments » | Scooped by Cole R

  • Newsarama posted the cover and some details on Kevin’s highly-anticipated return to the comics world, and revealed the title of the Batman book will be “Batman: Cacophony”. They’re also speculating a NOVEMBER arrival for the book, and even reveal the book’s cover, designed by Adam Kubert. This will also mark the first time Kevin and longtime pal Walt Flanagan will work on a book together. Here’s the deets:

      Written by Kevin Smith
Art by Walt J. Flanagan & Sandra Hope
      Cover by Adam Kubert
      Variant cover by Andy Kubert
      Sketch cover by Andy Kubert
Best-selling comic book writer/director Kevin Smith (GREEN ARROW, Daredevil, Clerks) steps into Gotham City to write this 3-part miniseries event! Practically from out of nowhere, the mysterious masked killer known as
Onomatopoeia returns and sets his sights – and sounds – against The Caped Crusader!

Retailers please note: This issue will ship with three covers. For every 25 copies of the Standard Edition (with a cover by Adam Kubert), retailers may order one copy of the Variant Edition (with a cover by Andy Kubert). For every 50 copies of the Standard Edition (with a cover by Adam Kubert), retailers may order one copy of the Sketch Edition (with a cover by Andy Kubert). Please see the Previews Order Form for more information.

      On sale November 12 • 1 of 3 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US

We really dig Kev’s villain and can’t wait to see him face off against Bats. The saddest news of the whole thing is probably the confirmation that it’s just 3 short issues, though we’re betting the story will be packed. The variant cover details are also interesting to see, at the rate they’re being issued, it certainly seems they’ll be rare (so if any kind comic shop owners out there can get us a hookup on the rare books, let us know, lest our View Askew comics collections be incomplete). We’ll of course keep on top of this story, a great Fall followup to “Zack & Miri” will be the new Batman book, just two weeks after we see the film!

  • SciFi Wire, the official news site of the SciFi Channel, votes “Clerks” as the best “Star Wars” spoof in history. Yep, even beating out “Spaceballs” (No. 2):

      1. Clerks, film, available on DVD. Perhaps the most eloquent Star Wars geek on record, director Kevin Smith crafted dialogue about the issue of contract labor on the second Death Star in Star Wars: Episode VI–Return of the Jedi. Collateral damage or deserving collaborators? The debate rages on.

  • Don’t forget, folks, Crazy 4 Cult 2, this Friday at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. This site runs a few more images from the hundreds they’ll have on hand this Friday, expect a big crowd but some fantastic art up for grabs. Man would it be cool to hang some of these works of art on the walls.
  • We’re only running this as a newsbite as rumor control — According to the often error-prone IMDB, the actor Johann Benét has been attached to “Red State” for a 2010 release. Considering the last news we heard from Kevin was that they were still in the final stages of getting all the funding they needed, we don’t think anyone’s being cast just yet. Plus, we also believe if things work out, we’d see the flick late in 2009, not 2010. Consider this rumor crushed unless we let ya know otherwise.
  • And finally today, okay, so this is SORT OF the flying car – Looks like you can own it for $150k next year. And it won’t even cost you any body parts or being violated by deviant scientists. Nice. See ya next time.

“Entertainment Weekly” Ranks “Zack” As One Of “20 Fall Movies We Can’t Wait to See”…

August 18th @ 6:32 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Kurt Mansfield

  • The widely read “Entertainment Weekly” once again shows Kevin and View Askew some love, putting “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” in their “20 Fall Movies We Can’t Wait To See” article:

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO
      Oct. 31
      Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks

Roommates Zack (Rogen) and Miri (Banks) are broke. If only there were something they could do to make some extra cash, something quick and easy and highly profitable that requires no real skills besides just doing what comes naturally…. Hmmm. Well, I’m stumped. Guess we’ll just have to see Kevin Smith’s movie to find out what they come up with!

You can see the mention both on-line as we linked it here, or the same write-up in this week’s print magazine.

  • Tickets for Kevin’s upcomming show in Hartford are going on sale a week from today – Monday, August 25th, at 10:00 AM. The show takes place on January 24th of 2009 so you’ll be making reservations pretty well in advance, but it never hurts. Kevin’s Canada gigs typically sell out. This link should have your tickets ready for purchase in a week.
  • The latest Myspace blog from rap artist MC Chris reveals a rough cut of a track deemed “too dirty” to run with “Zack And Miri Make A Porno”. You can listen to that one there, whilst Chris also DOES reveal that another song of his WILL feature in the film (though no clues to which just yet). Visit the official MC Chris site for more from the man.
  • Who watches the Watchmen? Apparently, one very lucky director. Seems that /Film also shares our jealousy over Kevin’s early watch of the “Watchmen”, currently our most anticipated flick of 2009. By the way, if you’re in that boat with us, you may want to sign this online petition to Warner Bros in the hopes that they’ll keep the running time intact (showing us the same film Kevin saw and not a shortened version).
  • For the last year or two, comic book artist Ashley Wood has been publishing a series of small art books called “Sparrow”. Each volume features a different artist. According to Mr. Wood’s blog, a member of the View Askew comics family, Jim Mahfood, will be getting his own volume of Sparrow sometime in the future (no release date is given). At $12.99 each for a 48 page, 6 inch square book isn’t the cheapest, but they’re very well done and worth the money if you’re a fan. Worth looking into for sure, as Jim was with View Askew in the comics world from the beginning.
