- Attention Aussies: Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back will be shown as part of Hoyts’ movie marathon, on Sunday January 27, before the film’s debut the following Thursday.It will be the first film in Marathon 1 (also featuring Scary Movie 2 and The Others – all Dimension), and will be shown at most Hoyts cinemas, at about 11ish. Be there!
- In the newest issue of PSM Magazine (Sony Playstation), the Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back DVD is number 1 on their most wanted DVD list. Good stuff. It’ll certainly be worth that title, too.

Kevin On Leno TONIGHT!
- That’s right, folks, Roadside Attractions PART 2 happens tonight on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, where Kevin himself will take you on a tour of some fun area attractions in this great land of ours. The last one was a blast, so don’t miss this one. The Tonight Show airs at 11:30 EST. Here’s Kevin on that and another piece of news that so many of you have been writing in about lately:

I’m in L.A. for the “Tonight Show” taping. At 11:30, you can check out the second installment in the “Roadside Attractions” segments. Tune in, if you can.
Next month, we’ll be skipping the “Roadside Attractions” for the short we shot last month, “The Flying Car.”
I know this is belated, but thanks, all, for making this year’s Vulgarthon a whole mess of fun (yes – that was a puke joke). We all had a blast on this end, and from the feedback, it would seem you all had a blast as well. You’re a good bunch of folks, folks.

- Kevin appeared on CBS’s Early Show this morning, chatting about comics on film, and also to show off some of the Secret Stash. We missed it, so if for some reason anyone’s got it on video, let us know so we can share it with the world.
- Congrats to Pete Tyler, who picked up the Panasonic DVD player and View Askew DVD collection, courtesy of View Askew and Universal Music. It’s great to see a News Askew reader winning a contest! See? News Askew readers really do win. Man, that sounds cheesy.
- Catch a screening of Jay & Bob in the UK, February 1st 2002, at the Duke of Yorks Cinema in Brighton.
- A scooper discvoered that “The Digital Video Filmmaker’s Handbook” by Maxie D. Collier features a few mentions of Kevin’s work in it: “Film’s like CLERKS and SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT weren’t visual masterpieces, but the characters won the love and disdain of many viewers.” The book also comes with a DVD that has a preview for hollywoodonset.com in which they have a scene of Kev talking at what appears to be a convention of some kind.
- Interestingly enough, Bryan Johnson and Malcolm Ingram were going to make a C.H.U.D. (classic 80’s horror flick) sequel. Check out Bryan’s post:
Malcom, uber producer Scott Mosier and I had a meeting the other night about the movie and let’s say making a CHUD sequel was going to be a lot more trouble than it was worth. We decided to pass on the deal but we’re still working on something similar so if it’s crazed cannibal action you’re after, stay tuned.

- Radford University will join the colleges around the country to screen Jay and Bob Strike Back this weekend (Friday 1/18 – Monday 1/21). Tickets are $1 for students and $2 for non students. The movie will be playing at the McGuffey Auditorium.
- Mysterio’s first Vulgarthon 3 report IS still coming to AICN – They’re just a bit backed up over there. Watch for report #1 later tonight, and #2 at the end of the week.
Kevin’s Upcoming Comic Projects…
- With the long-awaited Bluntman & Chronic now on shelves, and Green Arrow in its final month with Kevin on board as writer, folks are looking ahead to what’s next on Kevin’s slate in the comics world. Newsarama ran this excellent piece on what to expect in 2002 and beyond:
When this past summer, DC and Kevin Smith announced his next project for DC would be a Brave and the Bold ongoing series with his entire Green Arrow creative team in tact – artists Phil Hester and Ande Parks and cover artist Matt Wagner – Smith speculated his Green Arrow run would end around issue #15. Last week the writer made it official, confirming for the record his and cover artist Matt Wagner’s last issue will indeed be #15. As previously reported, issues #11 and #12 will be stand-alone stories, while issue #13-15 make up one final three-part story arc, featuring a new supervillain of Smith’s creation.
Smith declined to tell Newsarama anything specific about the villain, saying, “And ruin the surprise? Heavens no. But I’ll tell you what someone else said about him..
“Matt Wagner (who’s come up with just about the most astonishingly artistic comic book cover I’ve ever seen for issue #13) had this to say about the new villain in our recent email exchange about what the cover image featuring the villain should be…”
“And a cool character he is! Like I said, the concept was BOLD AND SIMPLE enough that the image just popped right up. In fact, I’m f*****g surprised that no one’s ever thought to call a character that before. Seems like a natural and the natural ideas are always the best.” Smith did not know whether Hester and Parks would also be exiting with issue #15, and a spokesperson for DC was unable to confirm what their last issue would be either. As it turns out, there looks to be some downtime between the end of Smith’s Green Arrow run and his starting on Brave and the Bold, as the writer tells Newsarama the launch of his upcoming new Marvel ongoing series Black Cat (more on that in a moment) comes first, making a timetable for Brave and the Bold too early to say.
Back to Green Arrow, Smith told us he was not aware of his replacement being found by DC yet, and asked if he had any input in the selection process, Smith replied, “They haven’t asked yet, so I don’t imagine they’re going to.”
As to Black Cat, Smith informs us plans for that series have changed slightly as well since its was announced this past summer.
Originally the series was to be launched with a special Spider-Man/Black Cat one-shot leading into the new ongoing series, but as of this moment, that one-shot has been changed to a four-issue Spider-Man/Black Cat mini-series leading into the solo Black Cat ongoing series.
Smith said they’re gunning for a May debut of the mini-series – in time of course of the Spider-Man film – and describes the mini-series as “packed”.
“Aside from our main story, we’ve got something happening to Peter that’s going to rock his world and change all the books forever,” he teased.
Smith isn’t giving away too many details about the ongoing series either, saying just that it will be “darker and edgier” than people might expect, and although the series was recently described by a comics publication as dealing with the mystical/magical aspects of Felicia Hardy’s ‘bad luck’ powers, he said that is not accurate, and that the series will be more in the vein of his work in Daredevil, “at least more so than Green Arrow was.”
It’s going to be exciting to see what Kevin does with these projects, as it seems he’s got a ton of surprises in store and he’s yet again shaking up the worlds in which these characters live. Good stuff. We’ll keep you posted on the progress of all this stuff!
“Angry Naked Pat” Coming To The Big Screen & DVD!
- This just in from Brian Lynch via his ANGRY NAKED PAT website…Big news for the guy. Not only is Pat finishing up season 1, but he’s also got a movie in the works, AND a jam-packed DVD that was announced at Vulgarthon (and will be released by Don May Jr.’s Synapse DVD). Here’s Lynch:

The schween is headed for the big screen.
Yep. Bob and I are headin’ up a full-length, animated Pat movie. It’ll probably be called something to the effect of ANGRY NAKED PAT, be about, let’s say eighty minutes long, and we’re hitting festival circuits.
Everyone is comin’ along. Mugsy, Kevin, Monkey Man, Geek, Nigel 7, they’ll all join the fun. We might fudge with continuity a bit, as a movie means more people that HAVEN’T seen the internet shorts, so, for instance, Pat might get Monkey Man for the first time AGAIN, Nigel 7 may be a HUGE BLACK GUY, who knows, but the end result will be…
…a full length epic Pat movie.
Anyone who went to Vulgarthon knows how well Pat works on the big screen, with an audience. And we’re gonna make it the funniest animated film since SOUTH PARK, and maybe even better than ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE.
Hope this excites everyone as much as it does me.
This means five more new episodes of Pat before you don’t hear from him for a while. We’ll keep you updated here, post scenes, screenplay bits and stuff, this will be Pat central.
And all you guys can sit back and know that you were the first people to enjoy the cartoon.

Oh… and at the View Askew Vulgarthon 2002, Don May, Jr. announced a two-disc set of Hollywood Brian Lynch’s Angry Naked Pat webtoon (check it out at this weblink). The disc will feature a lot of cool bonus material and maybe even an exclusive toon created specifically for this DVD. If you ever found the secret commentary on A Better Place, you know this is going to be a hugely funny disc.
Congrats to Brian Lynch, Bob Cesca, and all involved on all this wonderful news.
Drawing Flies Unused Concept Art, More…
- We’ve got some rejected concept art for what might have been with the Drawing Flies DVD, hitting shelves next month.
It’s interesting to see what stages stuff like this can go through before arriving at its final look. Here’s one of the
creators of said artwork (seen above) and why it didn’t make the grade:
Thought you might like to see what wasn’t chosen for the Drawing Flies cover. The cover that was chosen (the one you posted
last week) was overseen by Malcolm (I emailed him our progress daily) and is kind of a halfway point between art and
commerce. He wanted to make sure that the cover “best represented” his film and make sure that it was not misleading or
exploitive in any way. We are all very happy with the finished product however…

What about all the ones we made that were not chosen?
1st up, The “Lambs” cover. This one was my idea. It came out nice but, it makes the movie look like a parody of Silence of
the Lambs and really had nothing to do with the movie. This one was shot down quick.
The next two (one was a really rough sketch, the second was the one we turned in) is what we called the “Jaws Concept”.
Because we had limited tools, we thought it might be a cool idea to do an “illustrated concept” (like the Dogma and
Mallrats Special Edition DVDs). The “Jaws cover” was the first of two illustrated concepts that we came up with (you
will see the second illustrated cover in a future email). I knew Kevin Smith had a thing for Jaws (The TS and Brodie names
in Mallrats kinda gave that away). So, we gave it a shot. It just didn’t work and both Malcolm and Kevin gave a swift NO to
that tagline that I came up with (an understandably so, looking back now, I hate it) None the less, neither of these covers
were good enough so they got the axe.
All this stuff comes to us courtesy the “The Drawing Board Art Studio” in Berlin, NJ, who did all the cover work for
the DVD and VHS. Thanks, guys! Any other movie companies looking for someone to do key art for their films can email them

ALSO – This might be of interest to some of ya – The latest press release on the Drawing Flies DVD advertises:
“4 Easter Eggs (featuring Kevin Smith sharing some embarrassing stories)”. Look for the disc in stores on FEBRUARY 26, 2002!

- The Asbury Park Press followed up their earlier article with a report after Vulgarthon 3. We’ve got a scan of that article for ya above. Take a look.
- Buena Vista is now giving a new Jay & Bob Australian release date (officially) of January 31st. In New Zealand, the film hits a week earlier, on January the 24th.
- According to Orlando’s Megacon, Kevin will speak there on February 23rd.
- Kevin appears in the most recent edition of the online comic “Robot Stories”. Check it out HERE.
- J&SBSB will screen at the University of South Carolina, in Columbia. The university’s Russel House Theater will be giving free showings of J&SBSB to students on Wednesday the 16th, Thursday the 17th, and Friday the 18th at 8:00 PM.
- Dogma will be shown next Wednesday and Thursday, and J&SBSB will be shown Friday through Sunday in good old Pocatello, Idaho at Idaho State University.
- Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is playing at the University of California, San Diego, in the Price Center Theatre, on Thursday, January 31, at 7PM and 10PM. The tickets are normally really cheap, around $2 per show.
- The University of Texas is screening Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back in the Texas Union on Jan. 24 at 7:00 p.m. (so what college ISN’T showing this flick lately?)
- Ben Affleck will present the Cecil B. DeMille Award to Harrison Ford at the 59th Golden Globe Awards next Sunday.
- In a mildly related note, Encore games will produce a Daredevil video game according to Gamespot to coincide with the film’s release.
- “Stolen Summer”, the flick that Affleck & Damon are co-producing (featured currently in “Project Greenlight” on HBO) is getting some good buzz at Sundance.
Vulgarthon Buttons Raise $2700!
- The final tally from the sale of the Vulgarthon buttons came to a whopping $2700! The charity that will receive this money is “The Alliance of Neighbors of Monmouth County”. The funds they raise go DIRECTLY to the families of 9/11 victims in Monmouth County. Kevin chose the charity, and these are the same folks he hosted the Count Basie concert for just a few months ago. Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved with the project.
Next year, plans are to sell buttons again for another charity, this time to DROP the price to only $5 a button in the hopes to sell even more!

- Look for the first of Mysterio’s HUGE Vulgarthon 3 reports to appear at AICN today. Mysterio’s got more details than you could ever imagine from the event, including Q&A transcripts, interviews, and lots more. Watch for it. But we warn you, when he says, “They’re going to be kind of long” we’re not sure if you’ll even be able to get through them in a day!
- The Australian Release Date for “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” has been changed again, this time, pushed UP though! The flick now hits screens there on January 24th, 2002.
- The UK’s Region 2 DVD site www.r2-dvd.org rumors that Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back may hit DVD in the UK in May of 2002. Nothing is official yet, though.
- And finally today, The University of Texas at Austin is showing J&SBSB on Jan 24th at their student union. Tickets are usually free for flicks there. Click HERE for more information.
