- Strangely enough, the Internet Movie Database has somehow gottenthemselves a low quality version of the official Dimension Films trailerfor Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back! Yep, this puppy was found on the IMDBtoday during a routine visit, and it is indeed the same trailer that’scurrently screening in front of theaters with Scary Movie 2. We’re hopingfor a MUCH better copy of this trailer to come along soon, but, until then, you can at least check out this Windows Media version right HERE. Enjoy!

- MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD IN THIS NEWSBITE…Starz Movie news is currently airing randomly on the pay network (one viewer caught it after a Dogma airing) and it’s feautring a TON of new footage from Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. The piece focuses mainly on Kevin discussing Jason Lee and their desire to do Fletch Won (during which they aired longer clips of Secret Stash Scene), and also airs a new inteview with Mark Hamill from the Bluntcave set. This time there’s new footage of the Bongsaber battle including Jay using his Double Bladed Green Bong Saber! We’ll try and get this online for you if we can snag a copy somehow.
- Oni Press just released their annual color special last week in which several creators contribute their own stories. The lead off story is a really funny gag about (Mike Allred’s) Madman being killed and the detectives from Brian Micheal Bendis & Mike Avon Oeming’s POWERS series investigating it. They go around to many different comic characters (including Kevin Matchstick from Matt Wagner’s Mage series) asking questions. On one page, they’re with a ton of Oni Press signature character when the Jay and Silent Bob reference is made. Check out the cover of the issue and the scanned page above. The book runs 48 pages in full color and is available for 5.95.
- If your cable system carries the TV Guide Channel, wait long enough and you will see their “Behind The Scenes” segment on Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, including clips and interviews with Mark Hamill (they list his character as just “Knocker”) and Eliza “Duckshoot” Dushku. They promise more coverage as the release gets closer and mention that the Dogma SE DVD is now available.
- A reader spotted this IMDB description of Jeff Anderson’s new flick “Now You Know”. Anderson wrote, directed, and stars in this film, which looks to even feature a cameo from Kevin & Jennifer themselves. No current release information is available, but we’ll keep you posted if we manage to catch this one.
- Finally today, in some humorous news…Check out this new pic that a scooper found of Jennifer and “Bob” Smith. Looks like Kevin’s screen presence has overtaken his real life persona for that journalist. Link (and funny mistake) courtesy of Iwon.com.
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back One Sheet Art?

- Here’s one that came out of nowhere…Apparently Amazon has posted the cover art for the upcoming Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back soundtrack CD…Doesn’t that look suspiciously like a one sheet? It’s pretty common practice for a sountrack to share the same cover art as the theatrical poster, so this looks to be our first look at the official one sheet for the flick! Sadly, this is the largest copy we could come by, but if this is the final artwork, we suspect that larger official versions of the poster itself should be released to theaters and in our hands soon. Looks like a very slimmed down version of the cast on the artwork itself, with some folks missing that we thought would be included, so who knows, things could change. However, check out the map in the background and the Empire Strikes Back-like logo (looks like they’ve got official permission to use the likeness now for sure). We’ll keep you posted.
Commentary…
- Alright folks, well the big news today is that the uplink that News Askew uses has been upgraded from a 10Mbps connection to a 100Mbps connection. In non-techie terms, this means an even faster load time, and MUCH faster response during busy times like trailer downloading and the like. So, in short, the site should be faster than ever for you regardless of what you’re doing here. Enjoy.
Some cool DVDs coming out lately, in addition to the View Askew stuff. The new Die Hard box set is going to keep things VERY occupied this week, the series has always been a guilty pleasure…And speaking of which, Big Brother and Fear Factor are proving hard to resist during the slower summer TV months. As for theaters, Scary Movie 2 really wasn’t that good (aside from that inspired Exorcist into and the subtle John Woo reference), but the Jay & Bob trailer looked very slick. Still no word on when we’ll have an online version of that trailer, but those of you who have yet to see it will be surprised. While the trailer DOES show a great deal of the film and the characters that appear, it keeps the jokes and the plotline stuff fairly minimal. Hopefully this will still leave a lot of laughs and surprises for you this August. Doesn’t look like they’re taking the American Pie route and showing EVERY funny sequence in the trailer. A good move. Finally, though it’s been an incredibly busy week, the DVD review of A Better Place is in the works. There’s still a commentary track to listen to before finishing it up, but look for that coming soon.
Phew. Alright. All that being said, let’s take a look at some news for today:

- Varese Sarabande has a listing for the Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back Score Album on their upcoming products page, located HERE. It also includes a cast list with some new names. Sounds like the score CD will happen as Kevin predicted!
- J&SBSB is getting a TON of press, for sure, even 6 weeks before release. Here’s the full text of that Movieline piece that we mentioned earlier:
The L.A. Times Calendar section also gives the film another mention in an article about upcoming Marvel comics-related films:
- The Big Breakfast show in the UK ran a feature on “up-and-coming star” Jason Lee on this morning’s (10th July) show. They mentioned that he “starred with Ben Affleck in Chasing Amy” and featured a montage of clips from “Amy”. The piece was mainly about his new flick (”Vanilla Sky”) with Tom Cruise but it stll mentioned his View Askew roots. Lee is also mentioned in a small article in the new issue of “Jane” magazine, on newsstands now.
- UK publication Empire Magazine’s special Top 50 Comedy Movies Of All Time features a two page spread on Clerks, giving it a five star (maximum) rating and calling it the best comedy of the 90’s, amongst other things. They’re not so praising of Kevin’s later work, but they do mention J&SBSB and say they hope it will mark a return to form.
- Finally, Dark Horizons ran an interesting bit today about the upcoming Daredevil movie. Kevin is currently not attached to the project at all, as far as we know, but we figured fans would be interested:
First Look: Bluntman & Chronic Action Figures & Details!
- Wow, check this out! Here’s the next must-have item for any View Askew collector out there. The latest issue of Toyfare magazine presents our first look at the new Bluntman & Chronic action figures from Graphitti Designs. Check out how COOL these guys look! The monkey and the saber look like fantastic accessories too, and we’re sure there’s more to come. Here’s the blurb that ran with the ad:
“Jay and Silent Bob’s comic book alter-egos from JSBSB come to life in all their 8-inch glory, thanks to new figures from Graphitti Designs. Sportin’ 16 points of articulation apiece, Bluntman (that’s Bob) and Chronic (that’s be Jay) will be sold separtely, and come with replaceable hands. Chronic comes with a monkey, Bluntman with a “marijuana-leaf throwing star” and “bong saber.” Graphitti boss Bob Chapman also promises “a pile of poop someone stepped in.”Above, you’ll see a scan of the article above …It’s not the best pic, but hopefully we’ll have a clearer first look at these guys once they come closer to production. No release date for Bluntman & Chronic has been announced at this point. If anyone from Graphitti’s checking out the page though, get in touch with us!
New Hamill Interview At AICN…
- As mentioned earlier today, Mysterio’s run yet another of his on-set interviews from Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. This one took place right around the time we were on set, back in February, during Mark Hamill’s few days on the film set. If you’ve watched the official trailer, or know the nature of Mark’s character, there’s no real spoilers inside, so read on as Mysterio talks to Hamill about his voiceover work, Star Wars, and, of course, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. Here’s a preview:
I’m going to be very sorry when it’s over. I’m only in one scene, but I’m just having a blast and I didn’t know what to expect. You know I got kind of nervous because a lot of times I’ve met people that you say that maybe it’s better if I didn’t meet them. You know, “I like their act or whatever.” I’m not disparaging them, but I’m just saying the person doesn’t always match up with the image you have of what that person must be like. Whether it’s a musician, a comedian, an actor… or anything, the director’s the same. You know there’s a slight chance, “I’ve heard he’s a nice guy”, but there’s a chance of coming away less of a fan than I am now. In a way I’d like to keep it at arms distance.
…
With Kevin I’m just so amazed at how easy he is. Obviously, he’s such an original voice with no background in Hollywood whatsoever and to be that successful – is so encouraging for all of us who think that “Oh, it’s got to be like generations, who you know, who you’re married to and who your agent is.” I think it should be very encouraging to people with just raw talent. You know you can really connect and hit one out of the ballpark. And having said that, you come in and you think, “Well his scripts are pretty much gospel.” And yet, he’ll say “…and that’s when you come up and say that line. Do you like that line? How would you say it?” I’m shocked that he’s willing to be so collaborative. I think that’s just the mark of someone who’s really secure with what it is they want and who it is they are.
You can read the whole piece HERE.

- Mike Dequina has placed transcripts of Kevin’s, Shannon’s, Eliza’s and Jen’s J&SBSB press junket interviews up at his website. Jason Lee’s stuff is coming soon.
- If you check out Marcy Playground’s website, there’s a quick little write up about their new “The Devil Song” being on the JSBSB soundtrack. Nothing big, but they sound pretty psyched about being on the soundtrack, and “The Devil Song” looks to be their first single off of their new album. Read the piece HERE.
- Clerks comes up again in this week’s Film Threat online poll. It’s the 10th anniversary of the film “Slacker”, so Film Threat asks which indie flick is the most important milestone of the last 10 years. Clerks is a choice. Cast your vote at the site HERE http://www.filmthreat.com.
- Citizens of Ottawa take heed: August 14th is Kevin Smith Night at the Mayfair theater. Clerks screens at 7:00 followed by Dogma. $8 for both flicks.
Commentary: AICN News & More Later…
- Howdy folks…It’s Monday, and there’s a few leftover items from the weekend to get to, including a new Film Threat poll and a few other newsbites. Also, there’s a new Mark Hamill interview by Mysterio over at AICN that we’ll be running a full story on later today as well. Just wanted to keep the e-mails down and mention that it’s been spotted. See ya back here later.
A Better Place Review & Details!
- Today’s big news is the surprise of an early review for the “A Better Place” DVD over at The Digital Bits. Many are confused about this in relation to the recent delay, so here’s an explanation. The faulty check discs, which only contain the beeping noise during some non-film parts of the program, were mailed out to a few folks. The Bits got one, and yes, we’ve got one here as well. Little did we know that the Bits would do a review of the disc before the final release! At any rate, we’ll be spinning the disc up for a full review this weekend, but on a preliminary note, let me tell ya – This review does NOT lie…The disc and the movie are amazing. TOTALLY worth the wait.
Tood Doogan’s review at the the Bits is excellent, and really should be printed in full here, however, since we’ll be running one ourselves next week, here’s a snippet for now, but you definitely wanna read the full review HERE:
So that brings us to the DVD. Is it worth the wait? Yep. Synapse has always been a good company for going out of their way to bring little seen films to DVD. I think I should go out of my way here to say that I’ve been very proud of Don May, Jr. for sticking to his guns and his pocketbook to support films like this. It’s not a cheap endeavor, and with the post-production tweaks put into this film by Don and Vincent, this is more a labor of love than a cash cow for anyone involved. Give him a big hug when you see him at the next film or horror convention he shows up at.
The video quality is incredible when you consider a few factors. One, the film was shot 16mm. This flick sure doesn’t look like it was shot 16mm anymore. It still has low-budgetitious with bumpy camera shots, out of focus scenes and one jarring shot that went bad in camera but was too important to loose. You’ll also see a couple of new shots in the film, added for the DVD director’s cut, that were pulled from a work print. But unless you’re intimately knowledgeable about the film, I doubt you’ll even notice them – they’re cleaned up nicely. The video itself is nicely clean. Colors are well rendered and the blacks are pretty solid. Any grain you see (and it’s surprisingly not much) is there because this is a 16mm. But the good thing is the transfer was taken from the original film element – not some 35mm blow-up.
Cleaned up even better is the sound. We get a very playful and expansive Dolby Digital 5.1 track, which was pulled together at Skywalker Ranch. You can listen to the film either blown out in 5.1, or with a suped-up Dolby Digital 2.0. Even cooler is an extra feature that allows you to compare the Dolby Digital 5.1 with the original, icky mono track for three scenes. It’ll show every wannabe filmmaker out there the power of professional sound, I tell ya.
The review gives the film and disc A’s across the board, quite an achievement, but a much deserved one, as the disc and film truly are outstanding. Check back next week for our HUGE wrapup of the disc, and get ready for your copy to arrive later this month…If you didn’t order, do it now! This one’s a keeper.
