One FINAL Dogma DVD Article (Last One!)

June 26th, 2001 @ 3:18 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Ian Mance

  • Okay, we know we promised that yesterday would be the last, but fans are demanding that we post a link to this one (Sorry for the scooper that sent this in yesterday, as your e-mail is gone)…This review and look at Dogma’s history appears at DVD Journal and goes in-depth on a TON of circumstances surrounding the film’s release, the stuff that’s contained inside it, AS WELL AS the DVD content itself. Folks are enjoying this piece a great deal, so we felt it warranted a mention here. It’s too long to carry in full, so here’s a snippet:
Aside from a set of balls bigger than either Farrelly Brother’s head, Smith’s greater strengths lie in his writing. While there are plenty of competent directors working out there, there are way too few writers with Smith’s ear for character, the well-turned phrase, the meaningful soliloquy, and the laugh-your-ass-off throwaway line, often all packed within the same scene. He has been criticized for stopping his storytelling cold so that his characters can make Kevin Smith speeches, which is like slamming Quentin Tarantino for using all those noisy gunshots. Smith is one of the few popular filmmakers, industry or indie, who writes screenplays because he has something to say. He has matured professionally since Clerks (which he has called overpraised, and I agree). Since Chasing Amy he has demonstrated that he’s not afraid to use his films to explore outré ideas — silly, salacious, or somber — and invite you into his dorm room for brews, a bong hit, and 2 AM discourse about male-female relationships or the nature of God or whether angels have genitals. Then someone farts and the conversation takes another turn.

Be sure to surf over to DVD Journal and check out this outstanding piece for yourself.

  • In the latest issue of PSM Magazine, an excellent unofficial magazine dedicated to the home video console, the staff chose, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back as #2 in their list of must-see movies (though they picked American Pie 2 as their #1, hmmm, come on guys!). Anyway, my subscription on PSM is getting low soon, guys, so if you’re checking out the site, hook a brother up! And hey, take note – Jay & Bob DID come in ahead of that other big August sequel, Rush Hour 2.
  • According to Stroke 9’s diary section, an entry on June 24 says:
“So now I’m sitting in a hotel in New Jersey, and tomorrow we’re filming a video. We’re going to hook up with Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes and try to work something out. I’m going to try to get them to call Jason Lee (pure genius) But we’ll see. So stay tuned on the whole video thing.”

Sounds like filming happened yesterday and probably today, as scheduled! We don’t have any direct coverage on the video shoots, alas, but we’ll keep ya posted as soon as we hear what went down.

  • A brief blurb appears on the Jam Showbiz site, regarding some comments Kevin makes on the Dogma SE commentary regarding Linda Fiorentino and Janeane Garofalo. You’ll hear them firsthand on the newly released DVD, in stores today!
  • Film Threat online has now posted those reviews we mentioned yesterday, along with an older Mallrats DVD review as well. The pieces are very extensive, so if you like, check them all out :Mallrats, Dogma, and Clerks: Uncensored
  • The trailer for the “A Better Place” DVD is making the rounds…The Coming Soon website has just added the file. If you missed it, check it out! We’re hoping for some official news on the disc from Vincent any day now…

  • Finally today, here’s an interesting shot back from the Dogma days we’ve never seen. This one comes from a strange piece featuring pictures of Celebrities on the telephone. They’ll compile anything these days! Click the thumbnail for a better look. We’ve also got 2 screenshots of Jason Lee in “Big Trouble”. You can watch the full trailer for that one at the Quicktime website HERE.

The first disc contains “How Jay Thinks Kevin Directs” (on disc one) and the second disc’s is titled “How Kevin Directs”. Happy Hunting! Be sure and visit our new discussion area for the Dogma SE DVD, located in the News Askew Forums.

  • The reviews of the new DVDs keep a-rollin’ on in. Mike Dequina’s got 2 new positive pieces on the Dogma DVD and the Clerks cartoon DVD, which should soon hit Film Threat as well. Check them out HERE and HERE respectively. DVD Talk also has a review of the Dogma SE. With the disc hitting streets tomorrow, this will be the last of the reviews we mention on the site. Enjoy it, folks, and check out our FORUMS for a new discussion area set aside JUST for discussion on the new discs!

  • Jay & Bob see a mention in the latest issue of FHM Magazine (July/August), in their “Summer Movie Blowout”. It’s a very short blurb with no new material, really, but worth a mention.
  • Looks like Brian O’Halloran is scheduled to be on “The Show” on 102.1 the Edge in Toronto, Canada next Monday, the2nd of July. “The Show” airs from 5:30 AM – 10:00 AM EST.
  • Mentions of the Jay & Silent Bob soundtrack are starting to appear on MTV News with this mention of the PJ Harvey track being on there. The track appears on Harvey’s latest studio album as well.

  • Here’s a couple screenshots from the spoof flick “The Blair Clown Project” where Kevin & Jay appeared.

  • If you’re in the spirit of the new flick, maybe you wanna skin your WinAMP MP3 Player with the new logo? A download of this skin is now available over at SCOOPING THE MONKEY.
  • Thanks To The Mac Mind for the mention regarding the new J&SBSB trailers here at the site. At their site, they get a mention due to the Macintosh computers featured in the film.

  • Finally today, what if Jay & Silent Bob crossed over into the Simpsons? One fan has his artistic opinion.

  • Well, we haven’t CRASHED the server yet, but the demand on the new trailer sure is slowing us down! We’re working on getting even more power to speed stuff up, but in the meantime, you might have better luck (and take some of the strain off us) trying some other sites out first.

Thanks to the the folks listed above, we’ve now got a few more places you can go to get the Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back Internet Trailer #2. Most mirrors have just the BEST quality copy of the trailer, in Quicktime format. These copies are the exact same as what we’ve got here, so PLEASE try to get them elsewhere first. See our trailer download page for a full list of mirrors. And finally, be sure you have the LATEST version of Quicktime before you attempt to play the trailer, or chances are you’ll run into missing sound or other troubles. Enjoy.

More “J&SBSB” Screenings In Century City, Los Angeles?

June 23rd, 2001 @ 1:40 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Jimmy Dirkman

  • Could it be…MORE test screenings for Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back? Rumor has it that tickets are being handed out in the Los Angeles area all weekend long. Perhaps Miramax is looking to get a few more final reactions before locking in the film? We’ll keep ya posted. Good luck getting some tix!

Entertainment Weekly Pic & Write-Up…

  • Entertainment Weekly had it’s special Summer Double Issue (as they called it), with it “It list.” Kevin appears on page 105, listed as “It Dirt Disher.” Complete transcript is as follows:
Age: 30

Why Him?:

“Clerks” and “Dogma” director Smith was among the first filmmakers to embrace the Internet, launching viewaskew.com in 1997 to cultivate his fan base. Recently, he’s become the acid-tongued Army Arched for freaks and geeks, regularly slamming such Hollywood sacred cows as Disney, Miramax, and Director Paul Thomas Anderson (his anti-Magnolia rant is legendary). “I think people appreciate getting a peek behind the curtain,” says Smith, who takes plenty of shots at himself. “I figured they’d enjoy it more if I pulled the entire curtain down , shredded it, and burned the remnants.”

Required Web Reading:

The message boards at aint-it-cool-news.com “It reminds me that not everyone is going to like what I do.”

Career He’d Most Like To Have:

“God’s.”Closest Brush With Career Immolation:

“Do the death threats we received for ‘Dogma’ count?”

Next:

“Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” (August). “The flick’s largely a satire on how ridiculous internet culture can be.”

Jay & Bob Strike Back Soundtrack Listing…

June 23rd, 2001 @ 1:39 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Evan, George Fling Jr. & Sluggo

  • Thanks to Yahoo! News and Rolling Stone, we’ve got a COMPLETE track listing (not including the dialogue snippets) of all the tunes on the new soundtrack, along with this article headlining with the Bloodhound Gang. Take a look:
Bloodhound Gang Strike Back

Yet another eclectic summer soundtrack looms, this time for director Kevin Smith’s forthcoming flick, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The compilation, due August 14th, mixes previously unreleased tracks from Stroke 9, the Bloodhound Gang, Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner, Bon Jovi, Morris Day and the Time and Steppenwolf.

The Bloodhound Gang’s contribution to Jay and Silent Bob, a track called “Jackass,” was previously tabbed for two other soundtracks this year. The number was originally written for the aborted soundtrack to MTV’s Jackass. It was then slated for inclusion on, then dropped from, the imminent American Pie II album before finding a home on Jay and Silent Bob.

The collection’s first single will be Stroke 9’s “Kick Some Ass,” with a video to be shot by Gregory Dark (Linkin Park, Crazy Town). Said track will also appear on Stroke 9’s forthcoming fourth album, due this fall. The album was recorded in Northern California earlier this year with producer Jerry Harrison, who also handled the band’s 1999 breakthrough Nasty Little Thoughts. >{?Pirner’s contribution, “Tube of Wonderful,” is an instrumental that initially appeared in the opening credits to Smith’s 1997 film, Chasing Amy, but because no soundtrack for the film was ever released, it remained unavailable.

The film, which will arrive in theaters on August 24th, is the final feature set in actor/director Smith’s so-called “View Askewniverse,” the others being Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma.

Track listing for the Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back soundtrack:

“Jay’s Rap 2001”
Stroke 9, “Kick Some Ass”
Afroman, “Because I Got High”
Morris Day And The Time, “Jungle Love”
Steppenwolf, “Magic Carpet Ride”
Marcy Playground,”The Devil Song”
PJ Harvey, “This Is Love”
Bob Schneider, “Big Blue Sea”
Bloodhound Gang, “Jackass”
Thomas Rusiak, “Hiphopper”
Dave Pirner, “Tube of Wonderful”
Bon Jovi, “Bad Medicine”

  • Here’s a few screenshots from the E! News Daily piece that ran earlier this week. We’ll have a full-length video of that piece for ya soon, by the way. Early next week, probably. Watch for it.
  • Well, looks like the Golgothan lost in that Maxim online poll, but came in second to a worthy adversary:
WORTHIEST ROBOT OR MONSTER

The Golgothan, Dogma 18.36%
The real Godzilla, Godzilla 2000 15.60%
Darth Maul, The Phantom Menace 39.73%
Kevin Bacon, Hollow Man 13.24%
Bette Midler, Isn’t She Great 13.08%

  • This snippet popped up in a Chicago Tribune story by Mark Caro on the ratings system. The headline reads “‘F’ for Failure: NC-17 Doesn’t Work”:
Kevin Smith, whose debut film “Clerks” was initially rated NC-17 for its foul language before the ruling was overturned on appeal, suggested: “What they ought to do is get rid of the NC-17 and just call it R-Plus, because R is a rating (moviegoers) are familiar with, and they can sleep well at night. NC-17 to them is `We’re heading into ancient Roman times and utter debauchery, and we’re going to bring civilization down around our knees.”’
  • Tracy Morgan was on a very funny radio talk show “The Radio Chick” with Leslie Gold on 102.7 WNEW (same station as Opie and Anthony). He didn’t give any info that we haven’t heard already, but did give a plug to the ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ flick, and gave props “to his man, Kev!” He was promoting his comedy show at Caroline’s in Manhattan this weekend.
  • The latest issue of Toyfare Magazine promotes “Twisted Toyfare Theater, Collectors Edition” as “The Trade Paperback You Must Have!”. Kevin apparently writes an introduction for this book. Watch for it. It hits shelves in August.

June 22nd, 2001 @ 3:53 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • Well, it’s here, folks, the moment you’ve all been waiting for…The SECOND INTERNET EXCLUSIVE TRAILER of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back has arrived! As promised, the trailer clocks in at 1:11 and features TONS of funny new stuff, including stuff you just ain’t gonna see in the theatrical trailer. Ah, the beauty and freedom that the Internet provides. Check out some all-new screenshots above.

News Askew is proud to be serving a mirror copy on our new server as we speak. We expect some slowdowns (but hopefully not nearly as bad as the last time due to our recent upgrade). IF the demand brings the server to its knees STILL (it could happen), we may take down this mirror and direct your elsewhere, just to keep the News Askew and View Askew sites available to the public for general news. For now, though, CHECK IT OUT!!!

Note: If you’re having trouble here, MoviePoopShoot.com also has copies available for download. If the stress gets mega high, we may put out a call for mirror sites, but we’ll see how it goes here first. Enjoy.
