Report From The San Diego Con!

July 24th, 2000 @ 11:00 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Dustin Whalen

  • Wanna know what the San Diego Con was like? Here’s one man’s report:
Just got home from spending 3 days at comic-con {6 hours away from where i live}. I saw kevin all 3 days i was there and attended 2 pannels with kevin on board. 1st one was with chris gore, tom desanto {x-men the movie writer} a few web masters and harry knowles from AICN.

It really wasnt anything special but kevin did get some good one-liners in. One of the film threat writers was in attendance and while trying to bash poor harry kevin asked if he was with film threat {forgot his name} anyways he said he didnt feel so bad now that he bashed dogma that he got a look at him,i know not a good explanation but funny if you were there. That got a cheer.

2nd was the spotlight on kevin and that was alright as well.Nothing new was revealed and i even got to ask him 2 questions. Its nerve-wrecking asking questions when 1000 people are looking and listening.Anyways i asked if LEE was playing fletch and he whiped his face and i was so nervious i think he just couldnt answer it so i asked if dante and randall were gonna be in the next flick and he replied YES THEY BOTH ARE.After that and answering questions for 30mins he told his superman story, answered more questions and showed ep6 of the clerks cartoon series which began at comic-con and got a HUGE cheer. After that he thanked everybody and was off. Nothing new about fletch or VA5 or anything which i was kinda bummed, but then again seeing kevin was awesome.Im outta here….

Man, they didn’t even ask US to sit in on that webmasters panel! Damn! We’re hurt and stuff!

  • We missed a couple parodies from the Penny Arcade site we mentioned the other day…Here’s a Clerks sendoff and another one from the Askewniverse as a whole.
  • X-Men has set off a HUGE interest in comic book flicks, so it’s no surprise that New Regency Pictures has picked up the option to make a film about Daredevil, the blind Marvel superhero, and Mark Steven Johnson who directed “Simon Birch is scheduled to take the helm. And the answer to the question you’re all asking: Nope, Kev’s not involved. Shame.
  • According to ZENtertainmment & The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, Cuba Gooding Jr., and James Caan have joined Matthew Modine and Joey Lauren Adams in the dramatic thriller “IN THE SHADOWS”. The film is described as “GET SHORTY” meets “THE GODFATHER”, with its story about a hit man sent to take out a veteran stuntman who decides to become a stuntman himself.
  • Kev got quoted in a recent USA TODAY, chatting about the power of the internet when it comes to net surfers spilling the dirt after they attend private movie screenings: “THANKS TO THE INTERNET, EVERYONE’S VERY POWERFUL NOW…THE FAMOUS-FOR-15-MINUTES THING HAS TAKEN ON A WHOLE NEW MEANING. PEOPLE CAN REALLY FLEX THEIR MUSCLES DURING THESE TEST SCREENINGS AND AFTERWARD”.
  • We’re not usually ones to push stuff on the auction sites, but this fan has made a pretty damn cool engraved case in which to store ALL your View Askew DVDs. Check out the finished auction HERE, the dude may have some more up there soon. Nice work!
  • Those in the Sommerdale, NJ area might liek to know that there’s going to be a Kevin Smith Movie Marathon later this week, from July 26-29, at the Cinemark Theater in Sommerdale. Call them for more details on shows & showtimes.
  • Finally today, a scooper found a quote from Randal in an online sex survey. Enjoy.

  • Hey there all…Been away for a while, as things have been on the quiet side this week with Kevin out on the west coast doing the con thing. We’ve got the first shots from that today for ya, by the way. Otherwise, just some newsbites to mention, and fairly minor ones at that. Still, it’s news, right?

  • A kind mention of Kev’s upcoming Fletch stint appears at iF’s online website today, though he doesn’t seem to be much of a fan of Kev’s current work:
IT SURE BEATS MALLRATS 2!

Kevin Smith is once again on board to script a third FLETCH movie. Thisone will reportedly be a prequel, which is a clever way to avoid it starring Chevy Chase, and will be based on Gregory McDonald’s novel ‘Fletch Won.’ This will be the first Kevin Smith script NOT based in New Jersey, and it will be interesting to see how Smith (a damn good writer) will fare at adapting someone else’s work. There will be little opportunity for Jay and Silent Bob to fit into the plot, which is good. OK, so it’s a prequel to a lame sequel that will mainly be told in flashbacks, but in Smith’s hands a lot of cool things could happen. I’m feeling generous today.

  • Some new View Askew references at a humor website called Penny Arcade for ya…One on Dogma and one on Amy. They’ve taken their cartoon characters and fit them into the one-sheet poster designs.
  • Look on your comic shelves (or ask your comic supplier) for a new book from Jim Mahfood called “Jim Mahfood’s Stupid Comics”. It’s got quite a few View Askew toss-ups and Kevin references in there. Mahfood, by the way, drew some of the first View Askew comics, in case ya forgot.
  • Want a copy of the Dogma DVD and are STILL holding out for the Special Edition? You may wanna check your local Blockbuster. They’re starting to sell off some previously rented copies at bargain prices. Happy hunting.
  • The Mediatrip website there has a short film that’s a parody of Fight Club that’s got a very minor Kev reference in it…More of a jab, really. Check it out if you’re so inclined.
  • Finally today, the Catholic League is STILL taking swipes at Dogma! Check out this excerpt from a piece found at their website:
…The suspect is clearly a troubled individual who needs help. Unfortunately, those who have an agenda against the Catholic Church have unwittingly played into the hands of St. Croix. To be specific, St. Croix said that his attack on a statue of Pope Pius X at a Knights of Columbus building was motivated by his watching a critical documentary about Pope Pius XII. Good thing St. Croix didn’t see “Dogma” or there might not be any statues left.

More On “Exposure”…

  • This show is shaping up to be a fanboy’s dream, with lots of material from Kevin and some great footage of George Lucas’s old projects and some of the most famous, rare Star Wars pieces. Remember, it airs on the Sci-Fi Channel on August 23rd (we’ve added it to the countdowns for ya). We hear that Kevin’s stuff was shot last Monday, and that it went great. Can’t wait til the 23rd? Check out this exclusive inside scoop just in:
-On the July 26 episode of Exposure (10pm), we will air a segment with Kevin introducing “Electronic Labyrinth (THX)” and there will be a sneak peek at the Star Wars show.

In October, Kevin (Dogma) Smith begins production on his next comedy. Smith wrote and will direct the film which is slated for a May 2001 release.

We’re not sure where they got the timetable from, seems pretty close, but we don’t think anything official’s on the books regarding theatrical releases and production dates yet. Watch here for the latest.

  • Sadly, it seems like the UK folks still want to take the Special Edition Dogma DVD and add their own footage — The UK DVD Debate (www.dvd-debate.com) has recently reported DVD delays for Dogma in the UK, just like the US version.
  • Speaking of Another Universe, loyal NA scooper Russell Lissau is working on a Joe Quesada profile piece for the website. He promises it’ll contain a nice exclusive tidbit on Kev’s upcoming Green Arrow run. The article will hit the web on August 1st.
  • Congrats to the Too Many Nicknames folks on their EW mention of the Clerks Wazzup parody…Even if it was too cite the overuse of the commercial (Scary Movie WAS a bit much, ya gotta admit).

  • Dogma’s finally opening theatrically in Holland in a couple of weeks, thus they’re getting some press of their own there. Check out this priceless scan of some promotional material for the flick (click to enlarge).

  • More Dogma stuff: The film’s hitting the popular VCD market overseas. Here’s some scans of the disc artwork from the CDs and the sleeves being put out. Keep in mind VCD quality is a lot lower than DVD, so this must be mainly for those areas where Dogma isn’t yet available in the format.

  • Finally today, for those of you anxiously awaiting to see the women of “Coyote Ugly” may want to check out the official Piper Perabo website. Sure, it’s a stretch, especially with Kev’s rewrite not enough enough for screen credit, but still, we thought it was worth a mention. 😉

O’Halloran To Appear In “Translations” This Month…

July 18th, 2000 @ 9:51 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • After chatting with Brian O’Halloran quite a bit at Kev’s a few weeks back, we learned that he’d be appearing in a play this month. Sounds like a good one, too. Here’s Brian with all the details!
On July 21 – 30 I’ll be performing in Brian Friel’s “Translations”, a play set in a small Irish village in 1833 – the British army is preparing an ordnances survey map of Ireland, substituting English for the old Gaelic place names. Ireland is, in effect, being translated. Against a political background is said a doomed love story of a young English officer and an Irish farm girl, each knowing nothing of the other’s language. It’s at the Lauren K. Woods Theater on the Monmouth University Campus (Number 16 on the university map) Here’s the Directions to Monmouth University. The Box Office phone number is (732) 263-5730. Shows are on Thur. 20, 21, 22, 23, then Wed. 26, 27, 28, 29, 30. The curtain is at 8 PM and Sundays at 7 PM.

Be sure and get out to catch one of Brian’s performances, he always puts on a great show. Support live theater, too!

  • Diamond Distributors is now reportng that the Clerks Hardcover collection will ship NEXT week, July 26th.
  • Kevin was spotted in a few short promos for the upcoming Clerks “All Access” on the 27th during IFC’s airing of Clerks this past weekend. In what looks like an all new interview, Kevin will be chatting about the Clerks animated series and lots more, starting at 5 PM eastern, when they show Clerks with commentary, extra scenes, and more. We’ll have some better details as the day draws closer.
  • Dogma’s doing quite well on home video. VHS rentals have hit $24 million and DVD rentals $4 million. Adding in the 30 million it took in at theaters, an almost $60 million take for a $10 million movie…Not too shabby!
  • Today’s IMDB Truly Trivia question — “Which movie’s logo is spelled out with letters lifted from Cosmopolitan, Life, Rolling Stone, Ruffles, a Clark Bar wrapper, and a Goobers box?”. You may know the answer, but did you know that was the origin of the flick’s title logo?
  • Attention, Joey Lauren Adams fans — Two stories online about her flick “Bruno”: Variety/Fox announces that the film was picked up for distribution by Lions Gate and Yahoo Daily News reports the movie will air on Starz! this December.

  • Speaking of Joey, seems that the UK’s not all that familiar with her. Check out this scan from a recent widescreen VHS re-release of Mallrats.

  • Finally, in the News of the Strange department, check out this Star Wars fansite where their version of the movie’s dream cast features Jay Mewes as Bail Organa, Leia’s surrogate father. Umm…okaaay.

  • Hey folks, thanks for stopping in. Got some odds and ends to report on today, including a post from Kevin on a few things, including his thoughts on the X-Men movie. It was actually a pretty fun flick, though it would have been nice to have seen the 45 or so minutes that was cut from the flick way back when, since it seemed a bit on the short side. Fun flick though, and it grossed a TON, paving the way for a ton more comic book flicks. Hopefully these (and the inevitable X-Men sequel) will be allowed a bigger budget, since this one did suffer a bit here and there due to the constraints. Go see it.

We’re gonna let the poll topic ride another week, it’s a fun one, and we’d like to see what the final straggling votes stack everything up to. Alright, let’s take a look at what’s new in the View Askew world today:
