Dogma One-Sheet Poster Unveiled!

September 22nd, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Ming

Offical Dogma One-Sheet

  • The very slick-looking Dogma one-sheet has arrived and wow…If it ain’t ever eye-catching! After all the fan art, though, it’s quite obvious that there’s a TON of themes that could have been used to create this thing. We’d sure love to see the other rejected designs (there had to be some) or a few more one-sheets to promote the flick. This one seems to capitalize on Matt & Ben’s stardom, though, rightfully so, as well as give most of the excellent ensemble cast a shot in the limelight. We can see why they went with it.

Pretty odd tagline though, don’t ya think?

Be that as it may, the poster and lots more coolness is all on display over at the OFFICIAL Dogma site. We’ve got a local copy of the one-sheet if ya wanna take a quick peek at just that, too.

New View Askew Art…

'Jayfinger' by Ben Burgraff'Moonrats' by Ben Burgraff

  • Some fan art came our way that we thought we’d share. The first one, by Ben Burgraff, is a take off on “Goldfinger” called “Jayfinger”. The second, by Hari, comes to us courtesy of The Futurama Archive titled “Moonrats”. By the way, Futurama really grew on us over that first short season, and we can’t wait for more! What a great successor to the Simpsons (still going strong as a kickass show in its own right).

Dogma In Australia!

September 21st, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by The Legoman

  • Dark Horizons reports that Village Roadshow in Australia have picked up the distribution rights to the Australian release of Dogma. There ya go, folks! We’ve been getting TONS of mail from Aussie fans just dying to see the flick, so this is certainly fantastic news for them. Of course, they won’t catch the flick until the first quarter of the year 2000, but hey, it’s better than never, right?

Commentary

  • Just a little more commentary on the whole downtime thing, ‘cuz I feel like getting it off my chest…But man, what a horrible time for the site to be un-updatable!!!! First, the official Dogma site opens, along with the super cool official trailer, and even a link back to this site (Which, at presstime, has been outdated for 5 days as far as what we were able to upload, though updates WERE done during all of this time if you look back and notice). Then you’ve got the CNN story with 3 clips, even the clip that Chris and I appear in! Talk about frustration. We wanted to tell you about all this stuff right away, just to find that all updates to the page had been cut off. What a nightmare.

I can’t stress enough that you go back and read ALL the updates that you missed. There’s a lot of great stuff there, including exclusive Jay & Silent Bob #4 shots from Joe at Oni, Mumford pics, and of course the breaking stories (as we wrote them anyway) of the official site and the CNN clips online. It’s been killing us having all this news happen and not being able to share it!

The Entertainment Weekly footage is what really brought us down, by the way. Dunno if that was mentioned yet. The server admins hated us before, but when that clip brought them to their KNEES, it was all over. Ah well. Live and learn. And as I write THIS text, the domain switch still hasn’t happened yet — For all the technology that the internet offers, it still takes a few days to switch a website over to a new server box. Fact of life. So, as frustrated as I am writing this, by the time you’re reading it, I’m sure I’m a happy camper again.

Enjoy. And grab a sandwich or something, these updates are gonna take a while for you to get through…

Two News Askew Schlubs In Dogma!

  • A while back many of you took some time to read our Bearclaw Diary, which consisted of our day as extras in Dogma. If you’re really sharp, you remember it was for the flick’s airport scene. Well, wouldn’t ya know it, but the first clip from the CNN article is OUR clip! That’s right, you can now see us in all our acting glory, in our big Dogma scene! Just watch the kissing couple when they first appear. I’ll walk behind them and off to the right of the screen with Chris following behind. I’m “fake-talking” to Chris about something that’s supposed to be important. Watch Chris’s face as he looks at the couple, too. It’s priceless! So there ya have it, our big break in show biz, forever immortalized on film! Kinda cool, really.

Links to this clip and all the other clips are available and above, as well as on our Dogma RC Downloads page.

Kevin Checks In…

September 21st, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin’s back with his usual dose of goodness…Lots of info on what’s been up, and the usual cryptic hints regarding the coolness to come. We’ll let the man talk:

Some bones for you dogs to chew on…

Isn’t that what these update posts are reputed to be? I know I read that somewhere once…

I’m in a hotel in LA (if there are spelling errors, please excuse; I’m using the in-room internet service, and the screen is very, very small).Had to pop out for a little business, but I’m heading home very shortly.

Not much new to report. Toronto was great. Thanks to all who came out for the screenings. The press was wonderful (though the NY Times piece the other day vexed a bit; first, they said the reaction seemed mixed, which – while I didn’t speak to every journalist there – wasn’t the case; and secondly, the public screening was describd as something like “…seem to be enjoyed,” or the like; there was nothing ‘seem to’ about it; that Satrday night screening was killer; but hey – it was a really good piece, so what the hell am I bitching about).

Posters should be up this weekend. We’re got one hanging in the window of the Stash. Cruise by and check it out if you’re in the area.

The trailer (I’m told) is on about 1500 screens right now, with more to come. I’m not sure what it’s in front of, but it’s up there, at least. And Lord, is it about time. There’s less than two months to go before opening day.

I saw ‘Stigmata’ the other night. All I can say is wow. I can’t believe WE’RE the ones being attacked (though, even that’s quieted down, thank God).

We recorded Alec Baldwin for the ‘Clerks’ cartoon the other day. Man, was he phnomenal. His character’s in five of the first six shows, but he blew through the record in less than two hours, AND did a sweet job. i’ve just finished going over the storyboards for show four, so we’re almost out of the loop. Next up – shipping to Korea for the actual animating.

Speaking of which, Chris Bailey (the shows’ director) did a new drawing for the View Askew homepage. It should be up in the next few weeks, and it’s gorgeous. It features Jay and Silent Bob as they appear on the cartoon, so you’ll get an early look at their designs. Thanks to Chris for such a terrific piece of work.

If you see the Interview magazine 30th Anniversary ish, there’s a pic of me and Harley on page 180. Babe Askew would like all to know that she’s much, much cuter in real life, and the picture does her no justice. She’s also like me to pass on that since her visually inept father took the photo and knows nothing about lighting, she’s not surprised how poorly she was shot.

In closing, I’d like to say we’re still firming up the details of the ‘Dogma’ screening. We’ll let you know when tix will go up.

And after ‘Dogma’, I think some of you are going to be shocked where Jay and Silent Bob pop up next. It’s not the cartoon. It’s not a comic. It’s…

Well – you’ll see.

  • Well, now that you’re reading this, you’re saying FINALLY!!! It’s about time those lazy bums got back here and did an update! Actually, it’s a lot more complicated than that! We’ve actually been doing updates, the only thing is no one’s been able to read them except for US! So, we suggest that you read past today’s update since there’s at least one or two more that you probably missed! Dogma RC is also updated with all the latest on the official site, the trailer, clips, articles, and more. We’ve been busy! Why the delays, you ask? Read below:

News Askew Now Your OFFICIAL Source!

September 20th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Alright, so what happened, you wonder? It all started on Thursday when, during an update, our NEW server, Create-A-Web, kicked us off in the middle of an update due to anger over the amount of bandwitdth that News Askew was using. Apparently, when we signed on with the promise of unlimited traffic, they were lying. So, since then, we have been totally locked out from updating the site (until now). They would not even allow us to connect to put up a message informing you all what was going on, which is just very poor business practice. So, as we leave Create-A-Web after just a month or two of service, all we can say is we are HIGHLY disappointed in the service, not so much for forcing us out, but for the unprofessional and unfair way that is was done. Good riddance.

Now, onto the GOOD stuff. In case the title didn’t tip you off, we are now your OFFICIAL View Askew News Source! That’s right, us two schlubs are now the newest members of the View Askew team. News Askew has now moved to what will undeniably be our FINAL stop, View Askew’s own web server, as an official part of View Askew Productions.

Now, before ya get worried, don’t. We’ve talked to Kevin about all of this, and he’s been more than accomodating and fair about how everything’s going to work. News Askew will continue, business as usual, same address, same level of updates, e-mail replies, and the like. A few things had to go, but only copyrighted stuff, such as the movie scripts on Files Askewand the Alanis VH-1 track, for legal reasons. Hope you understand. We’ll no longer be able to link to things of this nature either, but you’ll have no problem tracking it down. Other than that, expect this site to remain unchanged, with the same commentaries, stories, and honesty that you’ve grown accustomed to.

If you feel slighted, like we’ve “sold out”, or that the site’s suffering somehow due to this, let us know. However, we think this is the best news this page has ever reported. No more downtime, server complaints, worries about moving, outrageous server bills, and the like. We feel that we’ve come home. And we like it here. We’re gonna stay.

Finally, we just gotta say this really is a dream come true for us. For two fanboys who set up a website a couple years back as an homage to some flicks that we really dig…To now be working for Kevin & View Askew is quite an honor. We’re proud to be a part of the team, and look forward to many more years of News Askew goodness. Here’s to the many good things to come…

  • We think we’ve finally reached the pinncale of all websites now: We’re starting to get banned by safe surfing programs! What an honor. One program states, “This site contains vulgar or obscene language.” Wow, harsh! Now we know we’ve hit the bigtime.
  • Don May is interviewed over at the excellent Digital Bits website, where he talks in some detail about his excitementover the upcoming release of “A Better Place”. Vincent was right, this is gonna be one NICE looking disc:
Doogan: Okay, sounds like Jerry’s business sense is starting to rub off on you. Speaking of big titles, I hear that your most ambitious to date is going to be A Better Place — what can you tell us about it?

DMJ: A Better Place was one of those mythical films that fans of Kevin Smith have heard of, but a lot of people hadn’t seen — including myself. I read about the film on the Ain’t It Cool News site, and it sounded cool. So, I met Kevin at a signing, and I hung out there to talk to him for a while. Prom Night was one of Kevin’s favorite “bad” films and he knew I was involved with the laserdisc. When I mentioned I wanted to do A Better Place, he said, “Okay.” Two years later we’re doing it.

Kevin made a joke that he wanted to do a Prom Night-like disc. He even signed a book for me that said “Don, I want to do a Prom Night-like disc.” Funny thing is, Prom Night doesn’t have really any extras, but for A Better Place we’re going all out.

Doogan: What’s going to be on it?

DMJ: We did a brand new transfer. To do that, we used the best telecine ever, the Spirit Datacine from Philips. It’s not only the best, but it’s the most expensive telecine unit in the world. Supposedly, James Cameron used this same make and model to digitally compose scenes for Titanic. We got a great deal on it, so I used it, more as an experiment for 16mm really, and now the film looks better than I expected it could — it looks like a 35mm production.

It will be presented in multiple aspect ratios, a-la Dr. Strangelove, to properly show the compositions the way they were originally intended. We re-timed it, and now it looks better than the theatrical prints. We are adding additional scenes, and are remixing it at Skywalker Ranch. Because View Askew has connections at the Ranch, we were able to get a 5.1 mix. Both director Vincent Pereira and myself are very proud of this one. I’m also excited because I get to go to Skywalker Ranch — I can’t wait!

Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier are doing a filmed introduction, and there’s going to be a commentary track with director Vincent Pereira, and it will contain additional scenes not included in the film festival prints. We’ll throw in anything else we can dig up. Another really cool thing is that Eion Bailey, one of the film’s stars, now has a big role in the upcoming David Fincher film, Fight Club, which will be a huge push for us.

Doogan: Eion Bailey must like those violent stories. Which, actually, brings the point up — has it been a problem distributing the film because of A Better Place’s “high school violence” story line, especially in the wake of the Columbine incident?

DMJ: Yes. It was an unfortunate incident, and bad timing. I had the film since January 1999, before the Columbine incident. After it happened, I knew it was going to be a problem. I remember calling up Vincent Pereira and asking him, “What the hell are we gonna do now?” It was just a bad, bad time to be doing a film like this. I knew the film’s content may even be a problem even before the shootings, but I don’t really mind controversy. Teen high school violence is kinda frowned upon across the board, you know?

I loved the film though, so I wanted to do it, regardless of the content. But because of Columbine, after I sent screeners out to potential VHS distributors — people we’re freaking out! Even though it’s a film about anti-violence (it’s probably one of the most anti-violent films ever made) using violence, some distributors take a look at the film and are immediately worried about the content. People were like: “Uh, no… we can’t do this right now.” We’ll have to wait for the Columbine incident to cool off, and continue delaying the film for a bit. I haven’t even officially announced the disc yet anyway. We do have a big distributor who is interested in the film now, but I can’t really talk about any arrangements at this time. It’s not exactly something people would think Synapse would do but, like I said before, I’m trying to expand my audience a little, and introduce people to films they have never seen before.

Kev’s Top 5 Comic Book Flicks…

September 19th, 1999 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Snow, Jamie & Movie-Robb

  • Page 30, Entertainment Weekly also printed Kev’s top 5 Comic Book flicks, as we mentioned yesterday…Here’s a transcription of his faves. A few may surprise you!
“Kevin Smith’s Five Favorite Comic-book Flicks.”

The Rocketeer (1991) – This is probably the closest translation to screen that comics have ever had, dumbing nothing down for the mainstream.

Batman (1989) – Not the best representation of the Dark Knight (Batman would never fire missles at anyone) but the brooding tone was right.

Superman II (1980) – Superman facing off against not just Lex Luther but also three Kryptonian convicts of equal strenght made this the best of the bunch. And he didn’t even turn back time by making the earth rotate in the opposite direction.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) – Joke if you must, bit the movie was really close to the comic.

Conan the Barbarian (1982) – Granted, he was a pulp hero before he was a comc-book character. But this flick was a pretty strong adaption of the comic, as well as a showcase for one of Arnold’s best performances. Ever.
