- Kevin Levine of The Huffington Post names “Chasing Amy” as one his his twenty best screnplays of all time :
-
CHASING AMY – Kevin Smith. Funny, real, pitch perfect, and you actually root for Ben Affleck. Now that’s good writing!
- We’re not quite sure how to add this in, since we’re not on Facebook (Facebook is a Myspace alternative, for those curious) — There’s apparently a “Lego Man” application for Facebook under their TV and Movie category featuring a Lego-ized Jay and Bob, as well as an entire group devoted to Kevin’s films. If you’re a user there, might be something you want to look into.

- Here’s a bit more press on the scheudled Jay Mewes appearance at the Eerie Horror Film Festival, scheduled for October 10-14 in Erie, PA. He’ll be there to support his latesthorror/comedy, “Netherbeast Incorporated”, a humorous film about vampires set in modern day corporate America. Some other cool genre guests on the slate, too.
- The Quick Stop makes number 5 on OverDugg’s list of top ten filming locations viewed with Google Earth. You may have to skip past an ad to view the actual page.
- SuperMax hysteria has made it to the UK though at least they’re not reporting it as fact. Once again, let’s let the press know – Kevin’s in no way attached to this! We were all just speculating! Sigh.
- With all the casting speculation happening, Video ETA runs down a list of possible actors for the role of Zack in Kev’s next flick. See anyone ya like? Got some other ideas? Let us know.
- We’re not sure who the true author of this article is as we have the same quote on two pieces (unless this is from a press conference), but Seth Rogen recently name-dropped Kevin when discussing his take on “The Green Hornet”
(as Kevin is widely known as having done a draft of the flick at one point). Both Rotten Tomatoes and The Winnipeg Sun have small blurbs on the potential project:-
The Green Hornet property was under Kevin Smith’s banner for a long time: the ultimate comic fanboy wrote a script but decided not to direct it. Rogen will not take the opportunity to read Smith’s draft.
“I’m actually friends with Kevin Smith and he said I probably could read it if I wanted. I don’t want to. I have no interest right now in reading it I would say. At some point.” - With the notion of a “Thor” movie out there, this E! Online article mentions talk of an actor near and dear to us as a good possible fit for the title role:
-
This pretty much has Josh Holloway written all over it,” wrote IceTruckDexter on cinematical.com, while others suggested Matthew McConaughey, Jason Mewes (must be a hair thing), New Zealand-born actor Karl Urban (lately an assassin in The Bourne Supremacy) and, of course, Vincent D’Onofrio, who memorably played a beefy mechanic who was mistaken for Thor in Adventures in Babysitting in 1987.
- The masters of humor over at “The Onion” give some good-natured ribbing to Ben Affleck today in this spoof report — Kevin’s name is also briefly mentioned.
- Cinematical ran an article going over Kevin’s response to the nature of casting changes in Hollywood, and mentions his prom and birthday. Nice piece all in all. A quick bit:
-
According to Smith, Zack and Miri is currently scheduled to begin shooting in January, with pre-production gearing up somewhere around early November. That leaves plenty of time to find a new female lead, and while I adore Dawson just as much as the next guy (I swear, I have dreams about that dance in Clerks 2), there are plenty of other fish in the sea. God, I feel like I’m giving my friend advice after his prom date ditched him at the last minute for a bottle of tequila and a dude with a trust fund. And speaking of proms, Smith also posted a ton of photos from his 37th birthday bash — including pics of his MILF, er, wife, daughter and tons of other partygoers. Happy B-Day Kev, and here’s hoping your belated gift comes in the form of an actress that will totally kill in the role.
Hey, you can certainly respect the guy for wanting to do his own thing.
Rumor Control: Who’s “Zack”?
- A rumor crossed our path over the weekend regarding a potential actor for “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” – The scoop mentioned nothing of this actor playing the lead role, but rather, just playing a part in the film. That actor’s name is Jason Bateman, whose recent memorable turn as Michael Bluth on “Arrested Development” has showcased his great comedic talents. Today, Ain’t It Cool News has added fuel to the fire posting the same rumor, though we’re unsure if this comes from the same source or elsewhere. We tend to check on stuff like this before we post it, hence why you didn’t see it here – As far as we know, this is just not true. Not only is Bateman not currently signed to play Zack, he’s not signed to play any roles at all in the film.
Naturally, we LOVE the idea of the guy being involved in this film or any View Askew project, so that’s not to say this could change — We just wanted to set the record straight as far as what we knew as fact, at the present time. We’ll keep on top of all the latest casting news for you, right here.
News Askew X: What’s Up???
- After an incredibly busy month post-implementation, we’re happy to report that bug fix and feature enhancement work has now kicked back in here at the NEW News Askew. For you on-the-go types: Those of you with iPhones should be enoying a version of the site design to display special for the device, though we’re also working on giving you folks the ability to switch back to the full, more colorful site design you see on a standard computer screen. As well, we’ve started to implement other mobile versions of the site — Those of you browsing on mobile web browsers should start seeing a friendly, stripped down version of the site to allow you to get your news on the go. Or, you can also check out the RSS Feed which is always a VERY simple way to keep on top of things when you’re on the road. But more on that in a moment.
Our new tracking system’s telling us a lot of interesting facts about where ya’ll are coming from, and how often you’ve been here. We can also see that the majority of our users still use the Internet Explorer browser, which is full of display bugs when it comes to the CSS standard (the new web standard that the site’s been designed for). We’re continuing to squash those bugs, but in the meantime, highly suggest a version of Firefox or Safari for your computer if you have the means. Downloads are free, and the latest versions are VERY standards-compliant (a fancy way of sayin’ that this site will work and display the way it’s meant to). Stick with us though, IE users, as we WILL get the site as compatible as we can, fix by fix.Look for more design and graphics changes to come as well — The look of the site is anything but finalized — The first thing you’re likely to notice will be a cleaner story format — We’ll be going back to a “bubble” like approach so the news isn’t just floating out there in a sea of white. Look for Jay & Bob to make a return to the header, as well.
We’re continuing to research ways to make the site a great reference as well as a great daily stop — If you haven’t used our Live Archives yet, give them a look, as we think it’s one of the new site’s “killer” features. We’re continuing to categorize old news as time permits, so you’ll soon be able to look back and dig up every story on a particular movie or other area of interest. We like that. We think you will, too. We’re also adding a new search highlight feature, as well, to highlight your search terms in the results you get back — A lot easier when you’re skimming for that special something.
We thank you as always for stopping by, and do hope you’re getting used to the new place — There’s so much more to come, only limited by our imaginations as well as our time, so stick with us, as it’s onward and upward from here.
Poll Topics: Open Call!
- Now that our site’s running smoothly, we’ve got a fancy new polling system for the front page that we just gotta use — So let’s do that, shall we? We’re planning to change the topic at LEAST once per month (sometimes more), and that’s where YOU come in — While we’ve got ideas, it never hurts to broaden the horizons, so we’re asking YOU to send us your best ideas for upcoming polls. We can’t promise we’ll use them all, but promise we’ll consider it, and have great confidence that you folks will come up with some good ones. Check our previous poll archives for some ideas, and be sure to send in both the question as well as your suggested choices (multiple choice format, as always). Send them on to scoops@newsaskew.com or via or nifty new contact form.
By the way, there’s a NEW poll topic lurking just over there on your right, so be sure and get that vote of yours counted! We may also revisit some of the older questions we’ve asked before in the coming months, just to see how numbers have (or haven’t) changed over the years. We look forward to hearing YOUR ideas, and thank you in advance for your cooperation!
RSS: Now With Feedburner!
- Our RSS feed, which allows you to get headlines and articles from News Askew syndicated ANYWHERE (your desktop, mobile device, Yahoo page, etc) has moved into Google’s new feed portal, FeedBurner! If you currently subscribe to our feed, we encourage you to switch over to the feed at its NEW home: http://feeds.feedburner.com/newsaskew. Any of your old feeds WILL still work (though not the OLD OLD feeds from the previous site), so there’s no essential need to change stuff around. But, switching over to our Feedburner version will ensure you ALWAYS get the latest version of the feed, no matter where it moves, from now until the end of time. Plus, it should integrate perfectly with any type of RSS software or syndicating device out there, no matter what it may be.
It’s never too late to join the world of RSS, in fact, it’s getting more and more popular all the time — For up to the minute View Askew news, the News Askew RSS Feed is the best option anywhere. We hope you’ll give it a try today.
Rosario Live In NYC: TONIGHT!
- We apologize for the last minute notice, but this one just came in and we thought some of you might like to know — The lovely Ms. Rosario Dawson will be part of a Q&A after a screening of “Descent” TONIGHT (Sunday) in NYC. Here’s the full deets:
-
Meet Rosario Dawson, Director Talia Lugacy and Actor Marcus Patrick immediately following the 9pm show of Descent on Sunday, August 12, at the Village East Cinema.
Rosario Dawson (Kids, Sin City) produced and stars in this striking new film from director Talia Lugacy about Maya, a college student whose existence spirals downward and ultimately toward revenge after she suffers a brutal rape. The film also stars Chad Faust (Saved, Tamara) and Marcus Patrick. The New York Times says of the film: “Astonishingly, though, the film’s brutality never plays like a stunt, thanks to Ms. Dawson’s revelatory performance and Ms. Lugacy’s adventurous direction (which includes lots of long takes and metaphorically apt compositions). Hard to watch but essential to see, ‘Descent’ is at once realistic and rhetorical, and driven throughout by righteous anger that comes from an honest place.”

There ya have it, folks — Hopefully a few of you in the area can still make it out there tonight.
Graves Interview: Jim Mahfood
- The latest in the series of the brilliant interviews being conducted for News Askew by Chris Graves takes us to another View Askew comics icon – The ever talented Jim Mahfood, artist on Clerks: The Comic Book, Clerks: The Holiday Special, and the latest Clerks comic called “Where’s The Beef?” (which explains how Dante and Randal got their jobs at Mooby’s in Clerks II). And, of course, who can forget his church going cameo in Dogma? Take it away, Chris:

AN INTERVIEW WITH JIM MAHFOODBY CHRIS GRAVES
CHRIS GRAVES: For those who do not know, what is your background and how were you introduced to the world of View Askew and Kevin Smith?
JIM MAHFOOD: I’m an artist. I do comics, illustration work, and live art in clubs around the country. I first discovered CLERKS when I was in art school. That was shortly after it came out. Someone showed it at school and we all really loved it. I met Kevin in 1997 at the San Diego Con. That was when Oni Press first formed.
CG: How did you become involved with comic books and art?
JM: I’ve always drawn since I was a little kid. I always made my own comics and knew I wanted to pursue art as a career at an early age. I paid my dues for many, many years and eventually started getting paying work. I’ve been able to make a living off of it since ’97.
CG: What was your Marvel Comics experience like and how did you get involved with SPIDER-MAN?
JM: They were all good. I got involved with Spidey through my pal Brian Bendis. He’s pretty much hooked me up with most of my Marvel work.
CG: In what way has music contributed to your work ethic and to your art in general?
JM: I’ve always listened to music while making art, so it naturally creeps into my work and has a strong influence over it. My work is supposed to be the visual interpretation of funk. Hopefully, people pick up on that when they look at it.
CG: Can you describe the creative collaboration between Kevin and yourself while working on the various CLERKS comics through the years?
JM: Yea, it was always very easy and painless. Kevin would write a super-tight script, send it to me, and I would draw it. There was never really that many corrections or anything. He’s an easy guy to work with. If I had any questions or whatever, we would just instant message each other and everything would work out.
CG: If you could pick your “dream” project, what would it be? Any existing characters you’d love to tackle?
JM: I’d like to have the time to explore my characters more. The creator-owned thing is my favorite; there’s nothing better than writing and drawing your own stuff, and having complete control over it.
CG: What was your cameo experience like on the set of DOGMA?
JM: Oh, that was a blast. I went down there with the Oni guys for a week and we all had a lot of fun. I got to sit next to my buddy Bob Schreck in that church scene. We just hung out and cracked jokes the whole time. Everyone I met during the filming was super-cool.
CG: Were you involved in the character designs for CLERKS: THE ANIMATED SERIES? What did you think of the end result? Have you pitched any animated shows that you created yourself?
JM: No, I wasn’t involved, but the look of the show is based on my art. I never really saw the show. They aired two episodes and took it off the air if memory serves me correct. I’ve pitched shows, gotten a couple of optioning deals here and there, but never made it to the final product. I want to see my stuff animated, but it will really only work if I do it with my own crew of friends, and we have control over the whole thing.
CG: Any advice for aspiring comic book/graphic novel artists and writers?
JM: Start at an early age, like 10 or so, and by the time you’re in your 20’s you’ll be badass. Develop your own voice and your own style. That’s the only way you’ll ever stand out.
CG: Do you have any new projects coming up?
JM: I’m doing all the art for the new Colt 45 ad campaign. The magazine ads and billboards across the country have just launched, so that’s exciting to see. I just did some new mural work for THE SARAH SILVERMAN PROGRAM. It’s in the coffee house where her and her friends hang out. I have a new mini-comic out called “BRAND NEW CADILLAC” that people can pick-up in the Store section of my site at www.40ozcomics.com.
CG: What is your favorite View Askew / Kevin Smith flick (CLERKS / CLERKS 2 excluded)?
JM: CHASING AMY, of course.
CG: And finally, do you still keep in contact with anyone from View Askew? Do you plan on working with Kevin again in the near future?
JM: Yea, I talk to Kevin here and there. I usually run into him around town at the grocery store, or the Griddle, or at art openings. Or sometimes we just instant message each other. I see Scott Mosier from time to time. I was at the View Askew office a couple weeks ago catching up with Scott. These dudes are making a documentary about my art and Scott and Kevin agreed to be interviewed in it. Kevin and Scott are the type of guys that are totally cool and supportive of me and my work even if I don’t see them all the time.
I’m always down to work with Kevin on anything he has planned that my art would fit into…
Jim’s truly one of the good guys, and we hope to see him back, involved with another View Askew project, soon. Thanks to Chris for another insightful sit-down, and to Jim for taking the time for us.

View Askew NewsBites™
- CinemaBlend picks up the story regarding the Rosario “Miri” departure today, now starting to speculate on who the newcomer MALE lead will be in the film. This will be the first time Kevin will have worked with a set of new-to-Askew leads since “Clerks” and “Mallrats”! Exciting stuff, when you think about it. The possibilities are vast. We’ll of course keep on top of all the rumors and facts and keep things as straight as possible for ya, right here.
- Hollywood News has a piece on the upcoming UK release of Kevin’s new book, “My Boring-Ass Life: The Uncomfortably Candid Diary of Kevin Smith”. They say:
-
Legendary independent filmmaker, writer, actor and cultural commentator, Kevin Smith has an international reputation for his hilarious take on the world. Now, he’s ready to share more than ever before, in MY BORING-ASS LIFE: THE UNCOMFORTABLY CANDID DIARY OF KEVIN SMITH.
Lewd, crude and hilariously rude, Kevin Smith pulls no punches in this hard-hitting, in-your-face exposé of, er, his rather dull and uneventful life well, not always dull. In between watching his TiVo, he manages to make and release Clerks II, relate the story of his partner-in-crime Jason Mewes’ heroin addiction, get a tattoo, serve on a jury and get caught stealing donuts from Burt Reynolds.
The book hits everywhere this Fall — Our signed copies from the Stash will be a must-buy, no doubt. - Normally we get so much stuff in the News Askew box we’ll skim long articles here and there for what we need – This piece from an L.A. for the Television Critics Association member was so compelling, though, we found ourselves reading the entire rundown. Kevin’s bit, however, comes at the tail end, and follows:
Fortunately, however, I did manage to get at least one photo with a very, very awesome celebrity that wasn’t taken at a TCA-sponsored event, so let’s close with that, shall we…?Right before I departed for Los Angeles, I read online that Gallery 1988, a small but kick-ass gallery on Melrose Avenue, was to be opening their latest exhibit – “Crazy 4 Cult,” dedicated to artwork inspired by various cult films – while I was in California for the press tour.
TCA Televesion Critics Association 2007 Press TourCool enough, right? Even better, though, was that one of the hosts of the event was to be none other than…wait for it…Kevin Smith (right).
I’d done a phoner with Smith for Bullz-Eye a few months prior, but realizing that this would be a perfect chance to meet him in person, I headed down to the gallery, along with Bullz-Eye’s mighty President and CEO, Gerardo Orlando. (Thanks for the cab fare, G!) Although a TCA function had resulted in us getting to the opening rather late, Smith was indeed still in attendance, so I approached him, introduced myself, and reminded him of our earlier conversation. I really have no idea if he actually remembered me or not, but, hey, he was pleasant in his assurances that he was glad to meet me, and that was enough for me…almost.
Before departing, I figured, what the hell, why not ask the guy if I can get a picture with him? I mean, I’ve got an actual Kevin Smith “inaction figure” in my office at home, and whenever my daughter sees it, she points at it and says, “Daddy!” So, y’know, basically, I’m thinking the effect of seeing a photo of Kevin Smith and me standing side by side ought to be downright surreal.
