- Not only has “Red State” wrapped, but a mere 2 days following, more than likely a first for any feature film, Kevin invited the entire cast and crew to his home to watch the first, finished edit of the film together. He went into some fantastic detail on the shoot, wrap party, and of course, this beautiful poster itself over at his blog, Silent Bob Speaks. Here’s a snippet:
…Here’s our RED STATE teaser poster.
Moody, weird, and pitch-perfect for the tone of the film. If I went out to an ad agency here in town, I’d be billed close to 20 grand for a campaign that’d maybe… maybe… include this poster. But this piece of artwork (I call it “The Holy Ghost”) didn’t come from a top-tier ad agency: Jon Gordon is my RED STATE producer, and this poster was created by his assistant, Melissa Bloom. So we’ve got a marketing image that was put together by someone who was on set every day, integral to the process that produced the film which inspired this image. This isn’t the work of some gun for hire who’s doing six other campaigns; we’re not just one of many. The marketer is actually family, RED from pre-production all the way through wrap, so she’s got an insight into the flick that no ad agency could ever boast (not even one-time Glo-Coat golden boy Don Draper over at SCDP). I’ll take passion over pedigree any day.
When we first looked at Melissa’s poster, someone said “You should give this to the ad agency as a guideline.” Guideline? Was an ad agency gonna make us any happier than Melissa’s image made us? The Holy Ghost is kinda perfect, and more importantly? It gives us a starting point from which to launch our home-grown marketing campaign. There’s an immediacy to it, but also: anybody could’ve taken the initiative and did this themselves. If folks were wondering why Melissa was skating up near the blue line, far from the corner where the puck was, it’s because she saw where the puck was gonna be, and just waited to make her rush on goal. She shoots, she scores.
So Melissa (with a Gretzky-like assist by Ming), the person on the RED STATE crew least likely to spearhead our marketing campaign, gets the collar for this arresting image – and I fucking dig that. That’s what I mean by self-reliance: why go outside the family for shit we can do ourselves? Promote from within – the way Harvey taught us.
Catch the full length post exclusively at Kevin’s blog.
The widely-read Ain’t It Cool News and the great Empire Magazine also caught wind of the poster, which gets the word out that the film exists and gets people talking — And with any independent film, awareness is key. We’re hoping that the buzz can get the film into Sundance, which takes place from January 20th through the 30th, 2011.

“Red State” Wraps: Score Info & More…
- With the final shot of “Red State” in the digital can, and the first edit complete and prepared for screening at a wrap party TODAY, Kevin’s said more about the film in the last 24 hours than during the entire shoot. Direct from the man himself, check out some details on the film’s lack of a score, festival plans, your shot at getting a song in the film, and even some “Hit Somebody” for good measure:
Just one more shot, and then we wrap my 10th feature since 1993. Great shoot + excellent cast & crew = a weird, unsettling little flick.
Via @iJack72 “Do you edit as you go” Yes, so the edit’s pretty much done now. I’m showing the whole flick at the wrap party Friday.
Via @serity12682 “wow, all done in 35 days?” 25 days. It was about as long as the CLERKS II shoot (& 4 days longer than CLERKS shoot).
Speaking of @ThatDavidKlein: he CRUSHED it on RedState. Wait’ll you see: BabyDave grew up. Fuck, he took a jump. Best looking flick to date.
Via @lexalicious “I bet KyleGallner kicked ass” He did. But to be fair, they ALL did. It’s an actor’s movie, sir. #RedStateIsAnActingClinic
Via @The_Iceman2288 “Are you bracing yourself for the inevitable conservative backlash?” It’s not that flick, really. #EveryoneGetsIt
@yourmelody1 “What’s your favorite moment experienced while shooting RED STATE?” Setting aside everything I had to do with it? Solely speaking as a movie-lover? Film-geek moment: seeing John Goodman & Stephen Root greet one another on their first day.
As for a moment of bliss? I’d give it to the 1st take of Michael Parks in the chapel. He was so good, he pretty much green-lit my NEXT film.
Via @Adictoalfilm “we can expect to see Parks in future Smith’s films” After folks see RED STATE? His dance card will be waaaaaaay too full.
@ReaperMattatt “who’s doing the score for Red State?” Leaning toward no score. The flick plays more naturalistically than anything I’ve done before. You don’t hear me in the dialogue anymore. Dunno how else to say it, but for RED STATE, a score would feel like bullshit…
Via @SoundInvestor “Blow to the Audio Community” Not at all: a sound mixer’s paradise – as sound effects BECOME the score. We were really on the fence about a score, and decided to go only to Howard Shore, who Jon & I worked with on DOGMA. If he said yes, we’d go with a score. If he passed, we’d go score-less. And Howard was willing, sight unseen, to give it a shot – but our window is VERY slim. He never could’ve been able to do it (but expect a Shore score on HIT SOMEBODY; homey’s a Canuck). So with our only choice out of the running, it felt like RED STATE was trying to tell us it wanted to be score-less. Or a woman; might’ve been expressing transgender desire. Either or. We found sound people we like & we’re gonna let THEM set the tone, all ambience-heavy, rather than saying “Hey audience: feel THIS way now.” Mind you: no judgment on scores. I love ’em & will want on on HIT SOMEBODY. But for RED STATE, a lack of score feels like the movie.
Via @MyersTheWise “We can expect a wink from the askew-universe?” No. RED STATE is all Act 2, sir…
Via @prowlerdante “Any licensed tracks in Red State?” Need a speed metal track. Might open it up to you guys. Email address forthcoming.
As previously promised, here’s the address for submitting speed metal & country music tracks to RED STATE: redstatesongs@viewaskew.com
Via @BrueBunny “time frame on when we’ll see anything from Red State?” We wanna debut at Sundance, so it’s up to them; if they dig it, etc.
And here’s the “Hit” stuff…
Via @ajwooster “are you off to Detroit for the hockey movie now?” Aug/Sept – after @ThatDavidKlein finishes his first season of TRUE BLOOD.
Via @esien “A Smith hockey flick? Yes, please” We used RED STATE to figure out how to shoot hockey & make it feel as exciting as playing it.
Via @renfestkarla “How you going to be able to shoot at the Joe at the beginning of hockey season?” We’re not shooting at the Joe. #NotNHL
Interesting news there, in that it sounds as if there are already plans in place for the shooting locations and schedule of “Hit Somebody”. To see “Red State” and “Hit Somebody” come back to back will make for an exciting 2011, marking two completely new styles of film coming from Kevin. Stay tuned, we have a feeling it’s going to get very exciting around here in the coming months.

“Red State” Wraps TODAY!!!
- If Kevin’s tweets are promoting the proper schedule, today is the final day of filming of “Red State”. A recently tweeted photo, a rarity from the set, gives us a look of the outside of the Abin Cooper compound “before the incident” as he states suggestively. For those waiting for the call on extras, due to the elimination of a scene shot at an airport, the need was cut drastically back. As for the shoot itself, sounds like a dream one, given the cast — Kevin’s comment: “If you wanna go to acting school, hang out on the RED STATE set: it’s a fucking CLINIC on how to be a great actor” indicates that some fantastic work took place in front of the camera over the past month and a half.
No release date yet, though early comments indicated that a first cut of the film should almost be edited together by now. If numbers for the Epix special last weekend were good, Kevin is promising that a teaser trailer for the film might be unveiled somewhere as soon as this week (online? SModcastle? We’re not sure). Stay tuned, as so far we’ve only had a few quick glimpses at “Red State”, we’re drooling to see more.

First Look: “Red State”…
- Kevin presents the first-ever image from the set of “Red State”, which looks to be an arty over the shoulders look from the pulplit of Michael Parks, who we believe to be one of the film’s antagonists. Having not read the script, we weren’t sure how much of the religious fanatic element of the story would be at play, but it’s looking like we’ll be in a church of some sort for at least a scene. Seeing Parks chew scenery is one of the great pleasures in cinema, making this a slam dunk to us before we’ve even seen footage. Kevin continues shooting “Red State” this month.
See SMod Saturday? See “Red State” Clippage!
- Want to be able to say that you were one of the first 50 fans in the world to see footage from Kevin’s first ever horror flick, “Red State”? Here’s your big chance. Attendees at this weekend’s SModcastle show of SModcast 3D, Saturday the 2nd at 9 PM, will be treated to cut footage presented by Kevin himself as a part of the show. This is a BIG DEAL – And comes with your bargain ticket price of just $25. You get the live SModcast AND a look at 2 scenes from “Red State” before anyone else. Yeah, pretty great. Stuff like this makes us hate the east coast.
Get tickets for this event and all other October SModcastle shows, including the just-announced Tom Green Tuesdays, at the official site. SModcastle is the home to some of the best talent behind a microphone in the country, and continues to grow with new shows, bigger events, and lots of buzz. Get your tickets now before things get so busy that you need to cross your fingers in a standby line just to get a seat! If you’ve got the means, take advantage and get your butt to the castle.
The “Twitter” Report…
- Is anyone else realizing how amazing the cast of “Red State”, initially thought to be mostly unknowns, has shaped up? Greats like John Goodman, Michael Parks, Anna Gunn (from the fantastic “Breaking Bad”), Melissa Leo…These are some quality folks that Kevin’s managed to get on board for the project. This week, Kevin’s twitter reveals a few more comments on the shoot’s progress, as well as more links to new SModcast network programs, including the insanely popular new addition “Puck Nuts”, plus deets on upcoming shows at the one and only SModcastle (grab tix for the month online right here). Here’s some of the highlight tweets from the past couple of days:
RED STATE Day 3 of and all is well. I already cut a scene together to show the cast & crew. Boys are crushing it. Tonight: Melissa Leo!
Via @g4tv “Fans of #SModcast, check out our interview with KevinSmith http://bit.ly/cYt77O ” Loved it. Eugene rocked. Give him a raise.
I just watched Michael Parks CRUSH an 8 minute monologue. Easily one of the ten best performances I’ve ever seen in my life. #AbinCooper
Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Michael Parks! Thank you, ALL of RED STATE: Today’s the best day I’ve had on a set since 2006. #SundanceBound
HUGE congrats to @BryAndWalt & @MingChen37! In 2 weeks their PUCK NUTS has become the #1 SPORTS PODCAST! http://tinyurl.com/pucknutsnum1
Wow, a Parks monologue? The guy can deliver one better than no other, so we sure can’t wait to watch that scene. For more, including links to all the new episodes, hit up @ThatKevinSmith on Twitter.
“Red State” Is Now Filming!
- It’s thrilling to see tidbits from Kevin this week, who confirms that “Red State” is now underway with a couple day’s work in front of the cameras already in the books. This project’s got us real excited, as it’s a complete genre change, the first non-comedic project as a writer-director, and a script that we know very, very little about.
Take a look at Mr. Smith’s “Red”-related tweets from the week so far:
Rolled our first few feet of film on RED STATE, featuring Michael Angarano & Anna Gunn – great actors, even in wide, MOS establishing shots.
Tomorrow is our first full day on RED STATE. Some high school stuff with our boys: the aforementioned Angarano, Kyle Gallner & Nick Braun.
Via @VideoETA “Can you confirm casting/offers to Pollack and/or Melissa Leo?” I cannot confirm offers; I can confirm they’re both cast.
RED STATE fully underway. Observations: Michael, Kyle & Nick crushed the first scene. Excellent crew. Red cameras rock. Catering top-notch.
RED STATE, Day 1 felt like coming home. Big thanks to a great cast & crew. And HUGE thanks to the Tweeps who came down to do background.
Sounds like a fantastic start, always good to hear. How about a blast from the past? The news that Kevin was going to make a horror flick first broke on August 6, 2006 — Yes, that’s how long it took this week to become a reality! From the full detail story a few days later, which even contains the video of Kevin’s first public reveal of the plans to make the flick…
…You can now check out the famous Rock-Paper-Scissors sequence on YouTube, where Kevin first announced his intentions to do a horror flick.
Kevin’s also recently posted this blurb on the flick: “…it’ll be pretty different from anything else I’ve done thus far – that much I can tell you. There may be a few chuckles in it along the way, but it won’t be comedy-horror. It’ll be chills and gore.”
No release date has been set just yet, but as production continues, we’ll have all your news here.
“Red State” Casting News this AM?
- With the digital cameras set to roll in just 2 days on “Red State”, Kevin’s next feature film project, we’ve been waiting for some more casting news, and it might just be here — Kevin’s set to appear on the Opie & Anthony show this morning (syndicated on FM as well as satellite radio). Take a look at a couple recent tweets, which also seem to hint to the fact that the news relates to a reunion of sorts. If that’s the case, it’s a bit of a clash with Kevin’s announcement, stating that he’s always been a fan of the person cast, hinting that he’s never worked with this person before. So, time will tell. Listen in this morning, and in the meantime, here’s the tweets:
Tomorrow morning I’m having a NYC play-date with @OpieRadio @AnthonyCumia & @JimNorton. Got some news to share… #ReunitedAndItFeelsSoGoood
I was just given some awesome RED STATE casting news. If reports are accurate, I just landed someone I’ve always been a massive fan of…
Shout out to a RED STATE hero: Bob Gersh – the agent who not only didn’t hurt our effort to make a deal with an actor, but actually helped!
Via @JAL1115 “RED STATE already generating Oscar buzz” Uh… no. It’s a nasty-ass $4mil horror flick with few (if any) redeeming characters.
More news later.
