Wanna Be In “Red State”? Here’s How!
- Kevin has revealed that extras will be needed for “Red State”, filming in the Los Angeles vicinity, on the following 3 days: September 22nd, October 14th, and October 25th. No further details about the type of person they are looking for, though the scenes will take place in a school quad on September 22nd (so likely a younger group), a funeral on October 15th (likely a smaller group of varied age), and an airport on October 25th (likely the biggest, most wide-ranged group of age and look).
You’ll need to provide some personal info and a photo of yourself via this online form http://viewaskew.com/redstate/or shoot an E-Mail with all your info to redstateextras@viewaskew.com.
If they like what they see, and you fit the bill, you just might get the call, and get your chance to be a part of a Kevin Smith film. We’ve had the pleasure of doing this on a few occasions, and it’s always been a memorable, fun, and rewarding experience. Don’t delay on getting your requests in — We assume that where you live isn’t a factor, as long as you can get into town for the shoot, you’ve got a chance.
Good luck, and if you make it, we’ll look forward to hearing from you about your experiences on set.
“Red State” News, new SModimation, & More via Tweet…
- Kevin’s gearing up to start filming “Red State” in just 15 days, so we’re focusing mostly on tweets on that topic for our features this week — Read on for words on budget, casting, and the inevitable R rating that we’re happy to hear about.
In addition, you’ll find a new SModimation, just posted for FREE, that you can enjoy at the official SModcast site. Don’t miss it. Here’s Kevin:

Via @flamethrowerrd “finish writing Hit Somebody yet?” Got busy for the last month or two. Still on page 101. Will head back in after RED.
Speaking of which, less than 4 weeks away from rolling on RED. Big thanks to all the folks at the production office. You guys are READY! Today was the first fully-funded day of pre-production. Much love & undying thanks to our two investor teams. Biggest love to Jon Gordon. Walked through locations with a few department heads. Even lower budget than we had on CLERKS II, so we can’t afford that many departments. RED STATE is the lowest budget flick I’ve made since CHASING AMY. That’s not me bitching AT ALL either; always more comfortable under 10mil.

Via @CincinnatiGAZzy “is it true that Matt Jones (Badger from BREAKING BAD) is cast in RED STATE?” Yup. He & Parks share a killer scene…

- Shock Til You Drop has what they are calling a logline for “Red State” though we don’t think this is necessarily studio official, just a summary of what we’ve known about the film since Kevin revealed he’d written the script a couple years back:
A group of kids encounters a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term “extreme fundamentalism.”
Just in from Kev’s twitter. He says: ” If I didn’t write it, it’s not official. And I never wrote that.”
“Red State” begins filming on September 22nd.
- “Clerks” comes in at #6 in KoldKast’s list of “The 15 Cheapest Movies that Went on to Become Cult Classics”:
ESTIMATED BUDGET: $27,000
Though officially Clerks only pulled in $3 million or so at the box office, its legacy is undeniable. In order to make the film in the first place, Kevin Smith sold most of his comic book collection, maxed out his credit cards, dipped into college funds, and spent the insurance money he’d been awarded when he lost his car in a flood. Long story short, if it had flopped, he would have been in a whole lot of trouble. The film eventually found an audience, spawned sequels, an animated series, and most importantly, launched the nearly fifteen-year career of Kevin Smith. Empire magazine even named it “one of the 500 greatest movies of all time” in 2008.
- Askew vets Rosario Dawson and Ethan Suplee both appear in the trailer for “Unstoppable” from director Tony Scott. The film’s about a runaway train and arrives this November.
Meet the “Red State” Supporting Cast!
- “The Wrap” spills the beans on the actors and actresses joining the great Michael Parks in front of the cameras when Kevin starts filming “Red State” this Fall.

Kyle Gallner, Michael Angarano and Steven Root are in talks to co-star in Kevin Smith’s political horror film “Red State,” and Oscar nominated actress Melissa Leo is also circling the project, an individual familiar with the casting process has told TheWrap.
Dermot Mulroney was previously also listed among the cast, but The Wrap and Kevin have refuted that, at least for now. Root previously worked for Kevin in a small role in “Jersey Girl” – Some scoopers noted Kevin speaking with Root at Comic Con recently, as well.
The Twitter Report…
- While we were trying to keep up with all the big news dropping due to the Con, Kevin’s been busy tweeting up a storm lately. Let’s take a look at some of the more noteworthy tweets from recent days. He’s back to record pace lately, like it was when he first hit Twitter, so we highly recommend you run a follow to @ThatKevinSmith to read them all – We’re just scratching the surface on the most newsworthy, but there’s so much more. Here’s a peek:
Via @thecolecash “How is “Red State” coming along?” Dave & I storyboarded for a few hours today. Found this amazing actress for Cheyenne…
Via @filmthreat “Where’s RedState being filmed?” California, sir. Up Whittier way. 80% of it shoots behind maximum security walls. #srsly
Via @sonic43 “Did you decide if RedState was shooting digital or film” Last I heard from @ThatDavidKlein, RED will be shot on a @RedCamera.
Via @Billy3152 “spot for hockey guys Leary or Sandler in Hit Somebody?” Massive cast, but I’m looking to surround Seann w/ CANADIAN actors.
Via @njosnavelin714 “You really believe HitSomebody’ll be the best film you ever make” 100 pages in, before we shoot a frame, it already is.
Via @StephanieClark_ “when do you start shooting for Hit Somebody?” Hopefully mid-2011. So let’s stop talking about it. Getting blue balls.
Via @SansomJam “Hit Somebody a comedy or something akin to The Wrestler?” It’s funny, but I don’t know if I’d call it a comedy. s’like GUMP.
Via @cmatthes1 “MCM mode of #CopOut gives me hope for the new BluRay extras” It’s pretty entertaining. Watched opening w/crowd & it crushed.
Via @bigstunz “Walt killed it in latest Smodcast” He CRUSHED PrimaNocta TELL’EM LIVE. Ask @BryAndWalt to put that 1 up on Friday. Pure gold.
Me & @SMosier sang FAMILY TIES & this dude mixed it into TIE’s opening credits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5LIs5W5JpM&feature=related
Via @MasterBruceSHH “Just read Gyre #6. Best ish so far. kudos for the last twist” Walt & I have been waiting a year for that splash page…
Via @denmark116 “How long do we wait for volume 2?” GYRE Vol. 2 starts up after the first of the year. And it’s a MUCH more familiar Bats…
Via @pcraig20 “how long the Green Hornet run is going to be” 10 issues. Then, I start begging @jimlee00 to do HORNET/BATMAN crossover mini.
Via @jace1013 “looks like #CopOut did well: http://bit.ly/9R3DyO #1 on every list” Congrats to the Movie Formerly Known As A Couple of Dicks
Via @lunchboxfett “When can we hear SModcastle opening night?” Not for awhile. Lots of banked shows to get up first: Philly, Billings, SF…
Via @dimmke “Can you stop making movies & just do #SModcast every day” Working on it, sir. Once we’re done with HIT SOMEBODY, s’possible…
@omfgitzjay “Will WYSMC be on SModcast Network?” No: to be a part of SModcast.com you’ve gotta know me REALLY well. Wanna know why? SModcast.com isn’t just weekly podcasts by me & my friends; it’s actually a more ambitious, ongoing project: SMod’s my autobiography.
This is my 10,000th Tweet. I’m using it to thank all y’all for following. You’ve given me enough juice to jump start the Act 2. Many thanks.
Our particular favorite Twitter highlight from the last week is a run that Kevin did on historical photos and posts back on July 20 and 21. If you didn’t see it, go back and seek out this stream. Tons of great photos and links in there.

- In case you missed the hilarious new SModimation that debuted at the con, check it out FREE, courtesy www.smodcast.com, via YouTube. Another awesome episode, kudos to Steve Stark for another 3+ minutes of brilliance.
- Is everyone else as excited about AMC’s new zombie series “The Walking Dead” as we are? Maybe this will help Askew fans come on board if you’re not already — The great Michael Rooker (“Mallrats”), Mr. Svenning himself, has now signed on as ” Merle Dixon, a psychotic redneck ex-con with an equally violent brother”. Here’s a photo of him in action, courtesty Dread Central.
- Catch View Askew icon and all-around good guy Brian O’Halloran live in “The Crucible” through the end of the month at the Holmdel Theater Company in Holmdel, New Jersey. The Star-Ledger spoke with O’Halloran about the role recently:
…In “The Crucible,” O’Halloran finds himself in 1692 Salem, Mass., as the Rev. Parris. “One night he finds that his daughter and niece are nowhere to be found,” says O’Halloran. “When he goes out and finds them dancing naked, he’s none too pleased.”
O’Halloran stops to laugh. “Funny; from ‘Clerks,’ I’ve become known for male debauch comedies. I’ve been given that label of sassy and comedic. The thing is, I’m 40 now and old enough to be playing fathers who get outraged.”
If there’s one thing that O’Halloran understands, it’s parental disapproval. “My parents both came to American from Ireland, so they were conservative people,” he says. “My father died when I was a teenager, so my mother had a very cautious view of life. Imagine how she flipped out when I quit my job in the early ’90s to act. I had spent years working at ShopRite, clearing over $500 a week, which was a lot of money in those days. As she always pointed out, a grocery store will always be in business no matter what happens.”
Tickets are $20 and well worth the cost — You can catch one of the last three shows this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night.
- Playblog reports that Seth Rogen (“Zack & Miri Make a Porno”) might star in Warner Bros.’ theatrical version of the Broadway show “Rock of Ages”. The film is set for a 2011 bow. No casting has been confirmed at this time.
- Yes, Southwest Airlines screwed a loyal passenger again by kicking off an already seated petite woman in order to make room for a passenger who required two seats. Once again, they just can’t seem to get this customer service thing right…
- We mentioned the Westboro Baptists protest that happened at the Con this past weekend, so it’s only right to give some press to the anti-protest signs that also appeared this year. Good stuff, folks. Gotta love that Bender costume. Read more about it and watch video at Comics Alliance.
- Finally today…Who is driving? Oh my God, Bear is driving . How can this be? See you next time…
