I had a blast working on the JAY & SILENT BOB story and was amazed at how seemless it all came out. Compared to the upcoming CLERKS comic–which is much more chatty, like Kevin’s films–this shortie was quite cinematic and comic-bookish.

The final product was a true collaboration, something that I could’ve written or Kevin could’ve filmed.

It’s been a while since I dabbled in B&W (since Batman) so that was fun as well–even though a guy on the View Askew site claimed my use of zip-a-tone was “amateurish”. In an earlier post on this board, Pitzerboy pointed out the fact that only the title characters and the dog have any solid black in their final rendering. I would add one other element to that list–the dope.

I think I mentioned before that this story would make a peek appearance in a JAY & SILENT BOB short that Kevin was doing for MTV. Turns out the whole thing’s evolved into more than that. Kevin filmed 11 shorts for them fellas and the brass at MTV loved them so much that they’re putting the whole thing all together as an hour-long special. Apparently two of the shorts feature the comic.

Also, Graphitti’s issueing a t-shirt with the cover on the front and that small, round panel of silhoettes on the back (“The whole ******* world’s against us dude. I swear…”).

Annnnnnnnd…they’re doing JAY & SILENT BOB action figures as well–which I’m designing the model sheets for. Can’t wait to see THEM accesories, eh?

Also, just finished the model sheets for the JAY & SILENT BOB action figures.They’re so damn rude even I can’t quite believe they’re going to be toys! I’dbet the AOL TOS prevent me from going into too much detail so suffice it tosay this…the JAY figure comes with Walt Flanagan’s Dog as an accesory andthey should’a named him “Tripod”!

Casting for “Tail Lights Fade” is going real well…….Looks like Carmen has the part in the bag (Like there was ever a question)…Jason Lee’s schedule is my biggest nemesis at the present….But hey..I’m so happy for his success…how can I complain. As Jason said before Carmen came up for a round table reading where we workshopped the script…..It went very well. Carmen aced the role…Sarah Chalke (Becky #2) was a real find. We also worked with some incredibly talented Canadian actors.

Next week L.A casting begins and some very interesting meetings…..(Hint…small chance Mallrats might not be the only film Kevin has involvement in that feature a 90210 cast member)

Actress Linda Fiorentino, who will star in the upcoming Kevin Smith movie “Dogma” with Chris Rock and Matt Damon, confessed that she is a hoops junkie. “I am the biggest basketball fan,” said Fiorentino, who refereed the celebrity game on does good? Me! I’m happy when I do good. People say,” Oh, you’rejust jealous.” So what? What’s wrong with that? Jealousy started thiscountry. People were jealous that the Indians had a beautiful country andthey came over and took it.Plus, here’s the part that pisses me off, you have the two bestfriends…Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, you know they wrote the movietogether, Good Will Hunting.But you know it was Ben Affleck that did the typing while Matt Damon was onthe bed doing hammer curls. Or did you see Affleck hunched over thecomputer like Ben Kingsley in Schlinder’s List, you know, while thearrogant two ton Matt Damon, the spawn of beer hall facism and Syd Field’sscreen writing books, sits on his balcony like Ralph Fiennes, in hisbathrobe shooting at people. Allright, obviously there is a problem thatneeds to be dealt with here and I don’t know if it’s mine. It seems to beMatt Damon’s from where I’m sitting. We’ll get back to him later.

So then he continues with the weekly newsThen he pulls out a home made poster with a picture of Hitler in the middleand he has him arm around a cut out of Matt.

The ‘Good Will Hunting’ hunk was hunting for a date while cruising around Hollywood – he slammed on his brakes when he spotted a comely young lass in a crosswalk and asked her out on the spot!

Good news, Gwyneth – the gal gave Ben the brush-off.

Warner Execs Toying With Superman?

Cinescape Online breaks with a full-length feature on the behind-the-scenes struggle to bring one of the most anticipated remakes in years to life. Superman Lives screenwriter Kevin Smith speaks with Edward Gross about his contributions to the troubled film and the battles he waged to keep the spirit of Superman intact, while executives pondered nothing but merchandising as far as the eye could see. While the full story of what’s happening won’t be published until this site is activated on February 23, here are two comments from Smith:

“There’s a scene [in my script] where Superman and Lois are on Mt. Rushmore,” explains Kevin Smith. “[It’s] probably the best dialogue scene in the movie because it really sets up the disparity in their relationship. I was told the scene had to be cut because the script was too long. I said, ‘Look, you’re insane. We can lose some lines, but don’t cut that scene, it’s the heart of the picture,'” Smith remembers.

“We fought about it and I almost quit twice. I hate to be a prima donna, but you can’t sacrifice story in favor of page count. The flight between Superman and Lois Lane in the first movie was everything, it really brought it home. You WERE Lois Lane in that scene. They said, ‘Kevin, what you don’t understand is that this is a corporate movie. It doesn’t matter how good the dialogue is between Lois and Clark, it’s about how many toys we can sell.’ That was just a real soul-killer, man. Sell all the toys you want, but tell a good story in the process.”
