  • License magzine’s July 1998 issue has an article on the current trend of movie-related action figures, and the upcoming Jay & Bob’s play an important role. Here’s more:
Indy Heroes Spawn Odd Action Figures

Everybody is getting an action figure these days:

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny as Scully and Mulder from The X-Files, Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck as the heroes from Armageddon and now Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith as Jay and Silent Bob.

      Silent who, you might ask?

But if you’re a fan of the independent films Clerks, Mallrats, or Chasing Amy, which Smith also wrote and directed, go to the head of the licensing class.

Graphitti Desings has been licensed by Smith’s production company, View Askew Proiductions, Inc. to produce action figures based on these characters who have appeared in all of Smith’s films-and his forthcoming Dogma.

Graphitti Designs president, Bob Chapman tells License! that the whole thing came together through mutual friends.

“I’d been aware of Kevin and his films, and fully realized that he does have an audience. We felt that if it was properly handled, we could make him and his people happy and give consumers something that they wanted.”

The figures, due on shelf in October, will primarily be sold in hobby and comic specialty sotres, but Chapman is also eyeing the mall-based pop culture specialty chains-both Spencer’s and Hot Topics have shown interest.

Even indy heroes these days are getting their day in the licensing limelight.
