MTV Films and Paramount Pictures has signed creator Eric Fogel to write, direct, and produce a CELEBRITY DEATHMATCH feature. The feature will be based on the TV series which premiered on MTV in 1998, and features clay animated caricatures of celebrities who fight each other in wrestling matches. Bouts have pitted Marilyn Manson against Charles Manson, Hillary Clinton against Monica Lewinsky, and Richard Simmons against David Letterman. Before CELEBRITY DEATHMATCH, Fogel directed a short film, THE MUTILATOR, and another MTV series, THE HEAD.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., July 13 /PRNewswire/ — Kevin Smith, the acclaimed director of the cutting edge films “Clerks,” “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy,” and the controversial “Dogma,” will make a special appearance to promote the DVD Collector’s Edition release of Mallrats between Noon — 2 p.m. on July 20, 1999 at the Virgin Megastore at Union Square in New York City. The title, from Universal Studios Home Video, debuts in stores on July 20 for $34.98 suggested retail price.

The DVD Collector’s Edition of “Mallrats” features commentaries by director Kevin Smith, cast members Ben Affleck, Jason Lee and Jason Mewes, and producer Scott Mosier. Other highlights include over an hour of deleted scenes, live footage from the feature commentary session, a featurette, the original theatrical trailer, the MCA Soundtrack presentation of The Goops singing “Build Me Up Buttercup,” production photographs, animated screens and hidden bonuses.

The hilarious slacker comedy “Mallrats” follows the lives of several youths spent at a mall over a weekend and stars Jeremy London, Jason Lee, Shannen Doherty, Claire Forlani, Ben Affleck and Jason Mewes, with cameos by Priscilla Barnes and Michael Rooker.

Recipient of the 1994 Sundance Film Festival Filmmaker’s Trophy and the Cannes Film Festival Prix de la Jeunesse for “Clerks” and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay for “Chasing Amy,” 29-year old Kevin Smith’s additional credits include screenwriter, editor, actor and producer. He also lists comic book writer, comic book store owner and cashier among his other occupations. A celebrated indie filmmaker who formed his own production company, View Askew, with the success of “Clerks” in 1994, Smith also achieved considerable commercial success with the box office smash, “Good Will Hunting” in which he served as co-executive producer. The film starred two of his most frequent screen collaborators, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who were also featured in “Chasing Amy” and Smith’s latest release, “Dogma.”
