“[Jersey Girl] is a complete 180 from Jay and Silent Bob. You’re not dealing with the last five movies and their characters,” he said, referring to the fact that throughout the five films characters or the mentioning of characters appear frequently.

“I feel it’s the best thing I’ve written,” Smith said. “Jersey Girl was freeing, because I didn’t have to worry about the past.

“The film is about parenthood, but it’s also about people finding themselves,” he said. “What do they say? There are just three types of movies… man vs. man, man vs. himself, and man vs. the universe…this movie is man vs. himself.”

And he’s not afraid of losing the fan base that Jay and Silent Bob have created for him.

“After five Jay and Bob movies with their same antics (the dick and fart jokes) there is only so much you can do. The people who don’t like Jersey Girl are going to be the same people who didn’t like Chasing Amy (Smith’s third film) and they are going to watch Mallrats for like the fiftieth time.”

Other things on Smith’s plate include the premiere of a short film next week on the “Tonight Show.”

“It’s a short film, that basically answers the question ‘What do we do after Clerks?’ In it we (Smith, Brian O’Halloran, and Jeff Anderson) are having a conversation.”
