  • Got LOTS of mail on this small Clerks reference at the Slashdot website (their latest poll topic):
The Empire?

– Benign Dictatorship
– Good intentions, bad results
– Fascist Despotism
– Outside the blowing up planets thing, a bunch of pussycats
– Cool outfits!
– Hard on Contractors
– Ben died for our sins
– This is not the CowboyNeal you are looking for…

Contractors is currently running away with it, too.

  • This coming week, A&E’s “Biography” will be showcasing Star Wars cast members. Mark Hamill will be profiled on Tuesday, May 21 at 8 PM ET, with Carrie Fisher at the same time on the following night. No word on whether they’ll mention either one’s role in J&SBSB.
  • CNN ran this article/interview with Alanis Morissette discussing the production process of her latest album. She attributes her piquing of interest in producing to the track she contributed to the Dogma soundtrack.
  • If you’re missing affleck.com, you may wanna visit the new Afflecktopia , a well put together Ben fansite with all sorts of nifty stuff. They’ll likely cover DareDevil much more in depth than us.

  • Because you loved her first brilliant piece so much, here’s some more Page Branson artwork — It’s nice stuff again, some stills dedicated to each of Kevin’s 5 films, and a couple extraneous pieces as well featuring Askew folk. Check them all out above.

Vote Kevin As Your Favorite At Tonight Show’s Site!

May 17th @ 1:45 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Dan Fannon

  • Important stuff here! Kevin’s currently featured in an online poll at the Tonight Show website, where you get to choose your favorite correspondent for the show — Let’s show our support and get over there, help Kevin win this thing! Kevin’s got just 8% of the votes at presstime, get over there and help get that total up. You’ll find the Quick Poll on the left side of the website at http://tonightshow.msn.com/. Kevin should easily beat the likes of Howie Mandel. Go, go go!

Don’t Forget: Kevin is on Leno TONIGHT to wrapup his visit to Florida with the Roadside Attractions crew. The last edition was an absolute riot, we can’t wait to see where Kevin heads next. As far as we know, he’ll as always be on the show in person to introduce the clip. Now, go get those votes in, and don’t forget to tune into NBC tonight for the big show.

  • Easily the top number of scoops on this one today — That now famous on the net Daredevil pic, featuring the first shot of Affleck in the suit. Looks pretty slick, yet still sort of silly thinking it’s Affleck back there. Kevin makes it tough to take the guy seriously with some of the stories he tells. Still, early word on the flick is great! A small image was released, but thanks to JoBlo, we’ve got the FULL size version of the shot above, just click to check it out. Thanks also to USA Today and Dark Horizons.
  • Small mention in this CNN article on Mark Hamill as one of the original Star Wars cast members:
And he isn’t above joking about his “Star Wars” fame: Last year he goofed on it by appearing as himself in Kevin Smith’s “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.”
  • On the Filmwise website today, the Visual Quiz shows a shot from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The picture is of the two babies who grow up to be Jay and Silent Bob – The question is, “What inseparable pair did this pair of cuties grow up to be?”
  • You can find more photos of those Buddy-Christ like Jesus figurines HERE.
  • And finally today, just to show you how WRONG the Internet can be a lot of the time, the very incorrect www.fametracker.com reports in “The Asterisk”:
“Director Kevin Smith reportedly became so irate at the postings of internet fans that he now never goes near a computer, and has banned computers from the offices of his production company, View Askew*”

Kev’s at his own computer pretty much daily and the View Askew offices are more wired than ever.

Commentary…

  • Well tomorrow’s the big day, Episode II hits the big screen! The best theater in town isn’t doing the midnight show, so we’re stuck checking it out tomorrow – If you haven’t already checked out the internet bootlegs, enjoy! The movie will likely do some good business, but can it touch the incredible two weeks of Spider-Man? And how much will Spidey hang onto this week? It’ll likely be one of the biggest moneymaking weekends in box office history, for sure.

We had a blast at WizardWorld this past weekend, though wow, was it ever a hectic day. So much to do, so little time! You’ll find our wrapup and some exclusive pics now online, new Auctions Askew items, and the usual bunch of interesting little NewsBites in today’s update. Oh, and by the way, Chris is looking for a “RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD” movie poster — If anyone’s got a line on one, drop him a line.

Let’s get started here…

WizardWorld Wrapup Now Online!

May 15th @ 7:01 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • WizardWorld came to the east coast this year, with an incredibly impressive con and guest list — There was some much stuff scattered around, we couldn’t even begin to cover all the cool stuff there was to see there. We spent a good part of our day covering Kevin’s appearances on Saturday, and we’ve got our wrapup of the day online with some exclusive photos. Check it all out HERE. Here’s a list of a few of the ex-Askew artists that we chatted with during the day, and a guide to some of their other current and upcoming projects:
Jimmy Palmiotti – Jimmy’s keeping incredibly busy with some very successful projects these days — They sold out of his “Beautiful Killer” preview book by mid-Saturday, and he’s writing two new series with Justin Gray for Wildstorm starting in September.

Mike Avon Oeming – You can visit Mike’s site HERE. Find out about his current ongoing titles such as Powers and Bastard Samurai HERE.

Joe Quesada – Joe’s of course the editor-in-chief at Marvel Comics right now, and the company’s enjoying a ton of success right now, with of course the Spidey movie, more flicks on the way, and some of the best books out there.

We’re sure you’ll want to finish this update first, but after that, your next stop best be the exciting Auctions Askew! As with every week, best of luck, there’s some excellent stuff for ya to get your mitts on.

  • Congratulations to Kevin! In the Cinescape Summer Movie Preview, he’s on the list of “The 100 Most Powerful people in Genre Entertainment 2002”. Kevin comes in at number 66, on page 94 of the book, above Stephen Sommers (Writer/Producer/Directorand force behind the Mummy and The Mummy Returns). Check out Kevin’s entry above!
  • In an interview on Radio One yesterday, rapper Eminem was asked “What makes you laugh?”. His answer was “Jay & Silent Bob make me laugh”. You can read the interview online HERE, under “Eminem Answers your questions”.
  • Kevin is thanked in the “thank you” section of rockin’ group Weezer’s new album “Maladroit.”
  • Variety reports that Affleck & Damon have a new variety show coming to ABC this Fall – “Push, Nevada,” a drama the network compares to “Twin Peaks.” Developed by Affleck, it offers clues to a puzzle that viewers can solve to win money.
  • Drop Dead Roses (starring Brian O’Halloran) will be screening at the UC davis film festival this weekend in California. According to this schedule, it’ll screen at 4 PM on Sunday. Check it out if you’re in the area, we hear it’s a fun little flick.
  • Rumor has it that Jay Mewes will be working on a music video this weekend with the music group “Powder”, playing the role of a superhero! We have no solid confirmation on this but a solid source sent in the scoop — We’ll let you know if we can get a confirmation (or denial).

  • Artist Brian Harley sent us a scan of this very well-done Brodie painting, and we thought we’d share the art with ya. He’s obviously a really talented dude, if anyone’s looking for an artist, you might wanna drop him a line!

  • Finally today, a weird sighting – The Jay & Bob Logo is used on the cover of this Russian gossip rag. You’ll find it above.

Kev Looking For Daughter In “Jersey Girl”?

May 13th @ 7:41 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Edward Havens

  • This could potentially be a BIG scoop, as FilmJerk has reported that the casting call has gone out for the daughter in “Jersey Girl”…Sure, that’s not big news in itself, however, it seems that we now know that the character will be six years old, named “Gertie” (E.T. reference perhaps?), and that Affleck’s character will be named “Ollie” (Green Arrow reference, perhaps?):
The call went out today to cast the little girl who will be playing Ben Affleck’s daughter in Kevin Smith’s first post-View Askewniverse film. Now, we’ve been hearing for a year now that the film is based on his own experiences as the father of the currently two year old Harley Quinn.

So imagine our shock when we saw Gertie was supposed to be six. And that’s not the only shock we saw when we read the notice…

Gertie (6 years old – can be older to play younger). The precocious and entirely lovable daughter of Ollie (Ben Affleck). Like her mother, she is down to earth, clever, and a huge fan of the musical Sweeney Todd. While Gertie is able to manipulate Ollie with the finesse of an adult, she is ultimately Daddy’s little girl. Please submit Latina and Caucasian actresses.

Shooting is scheduled to begin in July or August.

We have not confirmed this story at ALL, so take this whole report with a grain of salt, it may be a false rumor. We’ll report more as we learn more.

News Askew Poll: Exclusive T-Shirt Or Signed Mini Poster?

May 13th @ 7:39 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • As some of you may recall, Kevin offered a free signed Jay & Silent Bob mini-poster to folks who went and say Jay & Bob two nights in a row (Friday and Saturday) when it first hit theaters. Many of you sent in your ticket stubs, and have yet to hear back from Kevin on this matter. Well, at WizardWorld, Kevin spoke out on the poster delay and came up with an interesting question as well.

First off, the poster delay has been simply due to the sheer amount of autographs required to send them off (as he also planned to personalize them) — Kevin still hopes to get to the posters, if that’s what the fans want, but he also came up with a solution that might appease you even more – An EXCLUSIVE t-shirt, that only those who sent in tickets would receive. This shirt would be brand new, original, and shipped to you in your choice of size. It might say something to the effect of “I sent in my two ticket stubs, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt” along with a picture of Kevin and the word “LIAR!” written near him. Now this may change, but you get the concept.

Now, since most of you who went two nights in a row read this website, we figured we’d ask — Which would you prefer? Please ONLY vote once, and ONLY if you are set to receive something. PLEASE. Let’s keep this accurate, to get a true result here. Results will not necessarily reflect the final decision, but it will help Kevin to see what you folks would at least prefer to have. Vote now, vote wisely.

  • More appearances of Jay & Bob in web comics — Today, the strip “It’s Walky” features the duo, and a damn funny line to boot! Check out the fun right HERE. A mention of Jay & Bob ALSO appears in the “Week-End Warriors” at inktank.com.
  • We don’t have the audio, but here’s a blurb sent in regarding Kevin’s appearance on KROQ radio today:
I heard a Kevin Smith interview today on the Kroq 106.7 morning show. He discussed a number of films current and future (Daredevil, Spiderman), and mentioned that he saw AOTC yesterday. I don’t have an exact quote, but to paraphrase:

“AOTC absolutely rocks. I loved it. I’ve seen a number of critical reviews in newspapers and on television, and I couldn’t disagree more. I’m just a total fanboy on this one.” Kevin went on a bit with additional praise, indicating the story was well written, the romance worked nicely, and in particular the tie-in to the overall mythos was very strong. He said the Yoda/Count Dooku battle was a show stealer. One last interesting comment he made was that he enjoyed Episode I, saw it only once, and didn’t need/want to see it ever again, but he was already ready to see AOTC again.

KROQ often posts interviews on their site (www.kroq.com), so it may be available there before long. Thanks to Theforce.net for the story!

  • Mallrats and Clerks get mentions in this BBC UK article on Star Wars parodies in the movies.
