  • Diamond Comics has Kevin’s new Spidey/Black Cat issue #1 at number two on the top 100 sellers list for this week. The chart is based on the number of copies that are ordered by retailers, and does not include news stand sales (which don’t really add up to much these days). The latest issue of THE TRANSFORMERS is number one. We hope to have some more official figures soon.
  • Kevin posted a long rebuttle post to all the criticism he’s been getting on the Dc Web Boards about Green Arrow (specifically how late it is). Here’s a bit of that:
I don’t know about “way late.” I turned in the first 14 pages of issue 14 on March 28, which allowed Phil and Ande to get going. Turned in the remaining pages on April 22, just about a week or two after Phil finished the first 14. Then, on May 1, I turned in the entire script for issue 15. Why issue 14 took so long to come out is beyond me, as you’d imagine that even with allowing two weeks for Phil and Ande to finish 14, and another two weeks to color and go to press with the book, it could’ve come out at the end of May. But for whatever reason, it didn’t come out then.

If comics was all I did for a living, I’d say I’m a bad, bad boy. But comics aren’t my primary occupation. And any comics publisher I write for knows this up front. So when they choose to have me write something for them, they know there’s a potential for lateness somewhere down the line. It’s a trade-off they seem willing to make, because the higher profile of my other job makes it easy for them to sell more of the comics I write.

And, make no mistake: I KNOW the comics I pen get as much attention as they do because of my other job, not because I’m a genius comic-writer. However, that being said, the percentage of my comics’ audience who’ve bought my stuff solely because I’m a also film-maker is negligible. Not that anybody’s asked, but I think, largely, the reason why the comics I write sell well is because they’re stories people relate to in some small way – be it that they see themselves reflected in the characters, or because the stories themselves are not all that different from something the reader would write, if given the chance. You don’t have to tell earth-shattering stories to find an audience (Lord knows my career in comics AND film stands as testimony to that); you just have to tell stories that folks enjoy reading.

Read the entire post, which contains a lot more from Kevin, at the DC Boards.

  • Jason Lee’s Foundation for the Arts held its inaugural event late last week. You can find some shots of Lee with attendees such as Kevin & Jen (lots of other stars as well) right HERE, thanks to WireImage. Looks like they had some great stuff on display!
  • Adam Duritz of Counting Crows is apparently a View Askew fan. His last post to the official website says, “p.s. I loved Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and I especially loved the ending. Lock your doors”. Apparently he grew tired of the bickering on their official message board and jumped ship.
  • The Mallrats DVD Easter Egg of Kevin teasing egg hunters gets a mention in the “Women of Enron” issue of Playboy under the article “Cracked Eggs”.
  • A band from Kansas called ORIGIN, on Relapse Records has sampled Dogma on their new CD. Track 2, “Inhuman,” begins with a sample of the Metatron quote from “Dogma”, just before the part where God “speaks” in the film. Also, we hear there’s a band in Reno, Nevada calling themselves “Stevedave”.
  • Shannen Doherty is to slated to host a new US TV show which mixes candid camera and sci-fi films — “Scare Tactics” will be shown on the Sci-Fi Channel. The show will secretly film pranks inspired by sci-fi movies, involving haunted houses and alien abductions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will debut in October.

Tonight Show Clip Now Online!

June 27th @ 7:38 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Ming

  • Kevin’s fun appearance on The Tonight Show from Tuesday night is now available online, thanks to viewaskew.com. Both Windows Media and Quicktime versions are available. Watch Kevin walk out in his cool new P. Diddy jersey, and chat about his fateful “Joan & Kelly” appearance along with the classic Dogma protest story. Watch Jay plug the Black Cat/Spidey book, not once but TWICE! The entire clip runs just a little over 5 minutes or so, and is definitely a must-see. A nice preview of a couple stories like those you’ll hear on the Interview DVD in the Fall, though we’re sure those will be, how should we say, even more colorful? Kevin returns to the Tonight Show next month with a new edition of Roadside Attractions.

  • Chasing Amy was noted in Glamour magazine (July 2002, p. 142) in a column called ‘Indie Hall of Fame’. If anyone has a scan, send it on, as this isn’t on their website anywhere that we can find.
  • A new interview with Kevin and IndieDVD appears online HERE. Its main purpose seems to promote the Drawing Flies DVD, now available online and in stores across the country!
  • This website recently posted some movies they’d like to see recast, with this interesting doctored up still from Pulp Fiction with some Askewniverse characters inserted. Kind of amusing.

“Silent Bob” Sits With Jay (Leno That Is…)

June 26th @ 8:27 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith, Brad & Chris, Hoser

  • As you regular readers know, Kevin appeared on The Tonight Show last night to promote the Spidey/Black Cat comic, and, being the second guest on and all, had a fairly rushed but successful spot on the program. Here’s Kevin with his take on the whole appearance:
No eating disorder here…

…just not wearing the hooded sweatshirt.

Honestly, while I’ve still got a ways to go with the weight loss, I thought I looked much better on the show tonight than I have in previous appearances. I’m down twenty five pounds from the first time I was a guest (back in August, for “Jay and Silent Bob”). Perhaps white isn’t my color, but say what you will – I’m feeling good enough to crawl out of the mu-mu. And in two month’s time? Maybe I’ll go topless.

Alright, I’ll never go topless. I’m just saying.

For those who’ll kvetch about the fact that we didn’t talk about the comic enough/at all, what can I say? We ran out of time. There were seven bits we were lined up to do, and we got to two, because I can’t tell a short fucking story (my bad).

But the way I look at it: the job of any guest (in my opinion) is to be as entertaining as possible. That’ll likely sell a comic book (or a movie, or a TV show, etc.) much better than me droning on about how Spidey met the Black Cat to an audience full of people who couldn’t give a shit less. And I know I’m kinda biased, but I thought I killed on the show tonight. I think that’s a better commercial for the book then me attempting to explain the plot of “The Evil That Men Do.”

Good Lord, why am I trying to explain myself. We’ll let the numbers tell the story. Let’s just wait and see how well the book sells.

Fact of the matter is, Jay waving the comic around three times (once before I came out, once at the end of my segment, and once more at the very end of the show) is a better endorsement than me pleading the case for comics ’til I’m blue in the face, over the course of a seven minute segment.

Baby steps, man. And a comic book on display in front of six million people is a humongous baby step.

If it makes anyone feel any better, during the break, Jay lamented that we didn’t get to talk about the comic, and said we’ll go more in-depth next time I come back on as a panel guest in October/November, to promote the OTHER Marvel book I’m going to be doing, which is…

Like I’m gonna spill the beans this early. Read all about it in Wizard next month (or Movie Poop Shoot).

275 and feeling alive (albeit still severely overweight).

A-ha! So there IS a top secret project coming up. Guess we’ll hafta wait for that scoop with the rest of ya.

Newsarama followed up on the Leno gig with this tidbit on the commercial that was set to air during the program:

Before the main topic was discussed, Joe Quesada explained Marvel had prepared a “trailer” for Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do and the plan was for it to air during Kevin’s Smith’s appearance Tuesday night on The Tonight Show , but that before the show, the FCC didn’t approve the clip, determining it was a commercial (likely due to the on-sale date appearing at the end) rather than a clip/trailer. Quesada didn’t know why in light of what happened why Leno didn’t spend more time discussing the book with Smith during the segment, and that Smith was reportedly disappointed that the trailer wasn’t aired or that he didn’t get to talk about the book more.

Best of all, though, WE’VE got the super cool flick right here, for your viewing pleasure! That’s right, check the story below for your first look at the commercial for the new book.

Kevin will next appear on the Tonight Show on July 12th, with a brand new ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS piece that was filmed in and around Seattle!

June 25th @ 7:33 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith Live DVD Likely Due Around Xmas...

  • After posting the tentative street date for the “Evening With Kevin Smith” DVD yesterday, we were contacted by Columbia Tristar with the news that the disc, due to its sheer size and length of material, will likely take a bit longer to produce, but will be available sometime pre-Holidays. Kevin is currently working on a final edit with the producers of the set, which will take up TWO DISCS. We’ll keep you posted.

Spidey/Black Cat #1 In Stores WEDNESDAY!

June 24th @ 9:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Don’t forget to pick up your sure to be fast selling copies of Spiderman/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do #1, in your favorite local comic shops and newsstands on Wednesday the 26th! The book has, of course, been reviewed at The Fourth Rail, with 2 reviews HERE (7/10)and HERE (8/10). As usual, the book is well-received, though we’re hearing some rumblings of the content being a bit on the explicit side, which might spark the need for some shops to keep the book out of the kiddies’ hands. With the Spidey movie making the character this popular, though, we’re sure sales will still be great, and with Kevin on Leno to promote the book Tuesday nite (the first Tonight Show guest spot in history for a comic book, by the way), expect a lot of news.
